What Is Terrorism? (March 16, 2002)

When does naivete segue into intellectual dishonesty? The current "War on Terrorism" - or is it officially "World War IV" as some of the neoconservative war lovers insist? - is providing an opportunity to examine this question. (...) A new Frankenstein monster - fashioned out of the entropic remains of previous and current wars conducted and/or supported by the American empire - was brought to life in the form of "international terrorism." (...) I have long been in favor of ending terrorism in the world, long before it became fashionable to war against only certain factions of it. But let us be more inclusive as to its sources. Let us put an end to terrorism, not with the use of bombs, tanks, nuclear weapons, and secret military trials, but bywithdrawing our support from that which makes terrorism not only possible, but necessary: political systems. Let us expand the front lines to include not simply the terrorist practices disapproved of by states, but the far more destructive, deadly, and dehumanizing practices of statism itself.

WHY BUSH IS ADDICTED TO PERPETUAL WAR
http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=12654
The more we go after Islamist extremists, the more they'll go after us, breeding a perpetual war that Bush hopes will usher him in another term come November 2004.
(...) The Bushies have lifted their reelection strategy straight out of Orwell's "1984," and not just by creating ominous-sounding agencies like the Office of Homeland Security, the supposedly-closed Office of Strategic Information, and a "Shadow Government." As in "1984," the Bush regime tolerates zero dissent -- a two-party system in name only has been distilled to one in which only Republicans express acceptable opinions. And an absence of follow-up attacks has been met by endless alerts, advisors and empty hysterics in the name of security, most recently culminating with Tom Ridge's much-mocked color-code warning system. AS ANTARES SUGGESTS BELOW, IN SOME WAYS ISRAEL IS DOING TO THE PALESTINIANS THE SAME AS THE NAZIS DID TO THE JEWS... ALTHOUGH OF COURSE THE SITUATION IS WAY DIFFERENT TODAY! THE VENGEFUL WRATH OF BOTH SIDES IS ONLY LEADING THEM TO EVERMORE HORRIFIC AND GRUESOME EXTREMES THAT PERPETUALLY PROVE THE FACT THAT VIOLENCE ONLY BREEDS MORE VIOLENCE, A LESSON WHICH, ONE WOULD HOPE, WILL BE LEARNED SOON -- AND NOT JUST IN THE MIDDLE EAST!

Subject: Heil Sharon! Israel über Alles!

I have somehow managed to blot out the horrors happening in the "Holy Land" - but Arab friends keep sending me stuff which only have the effect of making me numb with grief. I usually delete the material, not wanting to fan the flames of hatred against anyone. The material is reminiscent of gruesome images posted on the Internet of atrocities committed against Freitilin sympathizers in East Timor and young Chinese girls in Jakarta by a corrupt military regime propped up by the US and the IMF. Today the hideous images below arrived and I was about to delete them when a quiet voice in my head said: "Ariel Sharon is doing to the Palestinians what Adolf Hitler did to the Jews, only difference is, Sharon has US support." I was prompted to air my unvoiced feelings, to ventilate my deep unease.

I'm not one who goes by racial stereotypes and I count among my friends as many Arabs as Jews. But being a Jew is one thing and being Israeli is quite another. Jewishness is a religious and cultural choice and if I embraced Judaism, I could call myself a Jew too. However, being Israeli is a particularly militant form of nationalism, since the modern nation of Israel was militarily inserted into the Middle East hologram by the world powers of the day, viz., the Anglo-American Axis funded by the Rothschild network. No time was wasted in creating a propaganda of heroism surrounding the Israeli nation and no one wanted to be accused of antisemitism, especially not Europeans who, only a generation earlier, were witness to Hitler's genocidal campaign against Jews.

Historian-philosopher William Irwin Thompson often pointed out that we become what we hate. This seems to be borne out by the ugly changes in the Israeli personality since the glorious kibbutz days of the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s while travelling in Burma, I met a few Israeli tourists and found them generally standoffish and arrogant (especially the men). Burmese tour guides whispered to me their vehement loathing of Israeli customers. It seemed that material prosperity had gone to their heads and they were exhibiting the spoilt brat syndrome common to all nouveaux riche.

This was for me a sad realization. In my youth I had been influenced by films like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben Hur" and books like "Exodus" - I was naturally sympathetic to Jews and the concept of Israel. The millennia-old feud between so-called Arabs and so-called Jews - like the yet-to-be-resolved antagonism between the Irish and their Anglo-Saxon invaders - issues from a real estate dispute between the descendants of Isaac and Ishmael, the sons of Abraham from different mothers. Because Ishmael's mother was Hagar, a servant girl, Abraham's aristocratic consort, Sara, insisted her son Isaac had the stronger claim. She ordered her husband to send Hagar and Ishmael into exile - and the old wimp obeyed (remember, he once almost sacrificed his own son at the altar of Yahweh!) Little wonder the descendants of Ishmael are pissed off with the descendants of Isaac. What a gory and tragic soap opera! Another Macbeth scenario, just as today we have a Barbara Bush manipulating her menfolk into serious and bloodthirsty disrepute.

And what do I hope to achieve with these musings? Simply this: if each of us chose right now to disown our nation and race (and football team and religion too while we're at it ;-), we'd pretty soon have very little to quarrel about and no more reason to hate each other for thousands of years. Does this sound farfetched? Let's try it and see how quickly violence ceases on this planet.

A VERY IMPORTANT FORGOTTEN ISSUE RAISED BY A GOOD KNOWLEDGEABLE FRIEND AND HISTORIAN

Subject: The settlements issue in GLOBAL MEDITATION FOCUS - Pacification of the Middle East --- Webposted at

Dear Jean and all

A note on a major issue which is customarily under-mentioned, and was not mentioned in your report. One of the most central issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the Israeli West Bank and Gaza settlements. These are what is eating away at Palestinian territorial and social integrity and what will be the key stumbling block in any solution - and they are a source of great embarrassment to moderate Israelis too. These settlements are directly financed from USA, and populated to a great extent by formerly American Israelis. It's not just an unfortunate side-detail. Some Israelis fall into the settlement trap not because of their beliefs or antipathy to Palestinians, but because living there is heavily subsidised, and therefore a boon to young families - yet the effect is deeply divisive and harmful.

There's a tendency for USA and Israel, both good at media and political manipulation, to cover up this key point. USA can never be impartial while their subsidies of the settlements (an the Israeli arms buildup) continue. This question goes back decades. I sincerely suggest that, in meditation work, this key issue is not forgotten or glossed over. One can talk as much as one likes about ceasing violence and about compromise and negotiation, but while this uncompromising, non-negotiated and foreign-supported activity goes on, the fundamental causes of violence will remain. And surely meditation needs to address fundamental causes and the foundations of unhappiness and violence, not just to smooth over the grosser symptoms?

For a history on how this matter of settlements arose throughout the 20th C, and what it implies also for divisions within Israeli society and for the integrity of the state of Israel, you will find full and adequate coverage in the book 'Holy War - the Crusades and their impact on today's world' by Karen Armstrong, Macmillan 1988. Time has moved on from that book's first publication, yet the details remain essentially the same. Not only for the good of the Palestinians, but also for the longterm stability and security of Israel, the question of settlements, however much ignored, must be properly addressed, or the problems of yesterday and today will continue.

I should mention here that I'm not sticking up for Palestinians by pointing this out - it concerns progress for everyone in the area, which is what I favour, and marks a major sticking point in any 'final settlement' of the issue.

All the best

Air Traffic Controllers Concerned Over Chemtrails
By William Thomas
March 21, 2002

Should we be breathing in powdered aluminum?

VANCOUVER, Canada - As continuing chemtrail activity culminated in massive aerial spraying over Vancouver Island and Washington state yesterday- and broadening plumes once again fanned out to haze clear blue skies - Air Traffic Controllers at major airports across the United States expressed concern over the emissions constantly showing up on their radar screens. (...) These radar returns are the signature of the fine aluminum particles found in laboratory tests of chemtrail-contaminated rain taken in Espanola, Ontario in the summer of 1999. The lab analysis found reflective quartz particles in the chemtrail fallout - and levels of aluminum FIVE TIMES higher than Ontario's maximum permissible health safety standards.

CLIP

In a fourth interview with reporter S.T. Brendt last week, Deep Sky stated that Air Traffic Controllers at Chicago's O'Hare airport, all three major airports in New York, Los Angeles LAX, San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland, San Diego, Washington DC's Dulles and Jacksonville, Florida were being ordered to route airliners beneath formations of Air Force tanker planes spraying something that regularly clouds their screens. (...) Every controller, without exception, is being told to divert traffic due to military exercises , and to bring in traffic lower because of experiments that may degrade their radars. The controllers at Cleveland's airport were surprised by the extent of obscuration on their radars.

CHEMTRAILS SCIENTIST BREAKS SILENCE

Ohio is the home of Wright-Patterson - the air force base working with electromagnetic and weather modification technology. A scientist working at Wright-Pat recently told reporter Bob Fitrakis that two different projects are being conducted. One involves cloud creation experiments to lessen the effect of global warming. Other chemtrails are connected with the military's extremely high-power Radio Frequency beam weapon in Alaska called HAARP.

The scientist claims that the two most common substances being sprayed into chemtrails are aluminum oxide and barium stearate. When you see planes flying back and forth marking parallel lines, X- patterns and grids in a clear sky, that's aluminum oxide, according to the scientist. The goal is to create an artificial sunscreen to reflect solar radiation back into space to alleviate global warming. In some cases, barium may be sprayed in a similar manner for the purpose of high-tech 3-D radar imaging. (Columbus Alive Dec. 6, 2001) CLIP

Suzanne's comments: Wow. This is a pull-no-puncher. It's hard to read because it rings so true -- a truth telling that Michael Moore does funnier, but it is the same story. We are imperiled by this administration, and you will never get a clearer picture than this. Put it in the treasure chest of the new uprising of true patriotism to create the world that conscious, heartful people want. "What is notable about their agenda is that it flies in the face of all of the requirements for peace, global democracy, economic equity and justice, ecological and environmental protection, and global stability. It represents the choice of an overpowerful country's elite, determined to consolidate their economic and political advantage in the short run, at whatever cost to global society."

FIVE STAR PIECE: Axis Of Evil -- in Washington, D.C., Edward Herman -- March 15, 2002

Axis Of Evil -- in Washington, D.C.

Coup d'etat president George W. Bush has designated three poor and unconnected states as an "axis of evil," reflecting this great moralist's sensitivity to good and evil. He has been subjected to a certain amount of criticism for this strong language even in the mainstream press, but nobody there has suggested that, as so common in this post-Orwellian world, such language might better fit its author and his associates.

There IS a political axis of evil running strong in the United States that underpins the Bush regime, which includes the oil industry, military-industrial complex (MIC), other transnationals, and the Christian Right, all important contributors to the Bush electoral triumph, and each of which has high level representation in the administration including, besides Bush himself, Cheney, Rumsfeld, O'Neill and Ashcroft.

This REAL axis of evil is using 9/11 and the "war on terrorism" to carry out its foreign and domestic agenda on a truly impressive scale, and so far without much impediment at home or abroad.

What is notable about their agenda is that it flies in the face of all of the requirements for peace, global democracy, economic equity and justice, ecological and environmental protection, and global stability. It represents the choice of an overpowerful country's elite, determined to consolidate their economic and political advantage in the short run, at whatever cost to global society.

They are accelerating all the ugly trends of militarization and globalization that have led to increasing violence, income polarization, and the vigorous protests against the World Trade Organization, IMF and World Bank.

Consider the following:

1. New arms race:

Even before 9/11 the Bush government was pushing for a larger arms budget and that gigantic boondoggle and offensive military threat, the National Missile Defense.

With 9/11 and the collapse of the Democrats, they are allocating many billions to anything the MIC wants, and with their more violent behavior and threats abroad, other countries will have to follow. This takes enormous resources from the civil society, and will exacerbate conflict based on cutbacks and pain for ordinary citizens. The same will be true across the globe.

Thus, the polarization of income effects of corporate globalization will be increased by this diversion of resources to weapons. As Jim Lobe notes, "Whatever hopes existed in the late 1990s for a new era of global cooperation in combating poverty, disease, and threats to the environment seem to have evaporated" (Dawn [Pakistan], Jan. 23, 2002).

The complete irrationality and irresponsibility of this arms budget surge is reflected in the fact that almost none of it has to do with any threat from Bin Laden and his forces. Weapons designed to combat Soviet tanks are going forward, as well as advanced new aircraft and a missile defense system that are hardly answering Bin Laden, but represent instead MIC boondoggles and a rush for complete global "full spectrum" military hegemony.

2. The new violence:

The Washington Axis has found that war and wrapping themselves in the flag is just what was needed to divert the public from bread and butter issues, inducing the public to revel instead in the game of war, rooting for our side while we beat up yet another small adversary, with perhaps others to follow.

As the great political economist Thorstein Veblen wrote with irony almost a century ago, "sensational appeals to patriotic pride and animosity made by victories and defeats...[helps] direct the popular interest to other, nobler, institutionally less hazardous matters than the unequal distribution of wealth or of creature comforts. Warlike and patriotic preoccupations fortify the barbarian virtues of subordination and prescriptive authority...Such is the promise held out by a strenuous national policy" (Theory of Business Enterprise [1904]).

The Bush team is threatening to beat up anybody who "harbors terrorists" or aims to build "weapons of mass destruction" without our approval. Israel is of course exempt from this rule and has been given carte blanche to smash the Palestinian civil society.

Bush and his handlers will decide who are terrorists, who harbors them, and who can build weapons. It is easily predictable that anybody who resists the corporate globalization process and tries to pursue an independent development path, will be found to violate human rights, harbor terrorists, or otherwise threaten U.S. "national security," with dire consequences.

Because the ongoing globalization process is increasing inequality and poverty, protests and insurgencies will continue to arise. The U.S. answer is spelled out clearly in the "war on terrorism" and simultaneous push for "free trade" and cutbacks in spending for the civil society at home and abroad.

The Washington Axis is also pursuing a "war on the poor" that will merge easily into the "war on terrorism," as the poor will be driven to resist and resistance will be interpreted as terrorism.

This is in a great U.S. tradition, brought to a high level in the overthrow of the democratic government of Iran in 1953 and installation of the Shah, the assassination of Guatemalan democracy by Eisenhower and Dulles in 1954, the war against Vietnam, and the U.S.-sponsored displacement of democratic governments by National Security States throughout South America in the 1960s and 1970s. They were wars allegedly against the "Soviet Threat," but really against the poor and the populist threat to "free trade.."

The Bush team obviously threatens even more violence than we witnessed in that earlier era. The military force they control is relatively stronger and without the Soviet constraint. With the help of the more centralized and commercialized media they have worked the populace into a state of war-game fervor.

They have brought back into the government some of the most fervent supporters of terrorism and death squads from the Reagan years in Otto Reich, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, John Negroponte, Elliott Abrams, and Lino Guterriez; men who can now work in a more killer- friendly environment.

3. Escalated support for authoritarian regimes.

The United States actively helped bring to power and supported large numbers of murderous regimes in the years 1945-1990, on the excuse of the Soviet Threat, but really because those regimes were suitably subservient to U.S. interests and willingly provided that crucial "favorable climate of investment" (especially, union-busting). With the Soviet Threat gone, for a while there was a problem finding rationalizations for the long-standing and structurally-rooted anti-populist and anti-democratic bias, but now we have the "war on terrorism," which will do quite nicely.

The Washington Axis has already leapt to the support of the military dictator of Pakistan, the ex-Stalinist boss of Uzbekistan, and it is clear that willingness to serve the "war on terrorism" will override any nasty political leadership qualities.

At the same time, as with Sharon in his escalated crackdown on the Palestinians and Putin in Chechnya, cooperation with the war will mean support for internal violence against dissidents and minorities, forms of state terrorism that will readily be interpreted as part of the "war on terrorism." Just as militarization and war do not conduce to democracy, the effects of mobilization of countries to support the Washington Axis of Evil's war will damage democracy globally.

4. Destabilization effects.

Corporate globalization has had a major destabilizing effect in the global economy, causing increased unemployment, civilian budget cuts, large-scale internal and external migrations, and environmental destruction. The more aggressive penetration of oil interests, in collusion with local governments in Nigeria, Colombia, and now Central Asia, and the new war on terrorism, should intensify destabilization trends.

5. The fight against democracy at home.

At every level the Bush team has fought against the basics of democracy and attempted to concentrate unaccountable governmental authority in its own hands. Militarization itself is anti-democratic, but the team has attempted to loosen constraints on the CIA and police, reduce public access to every kind of information, and constrain free speech.

They have put in place a secret government and are moving the country toward a more openly authoritarian government, and, if they can keep it going, their planned open-ended war on terrorism should serve this end well.

6. The Bush "vision" versus the "End of History."

This process does not comport well with Francis Fukayama's vision of the new peaceful, democratic order that would follow the death of the Soviet Union and triumph of capitalism.

Fukayama missed the boat on three counts. He failed to see that the end of the Soviet Union and termination of a socialist threat would also end the need to accommodate labor with social welfare concessions--in other words, that there could be a return to a pure capitalism such as Karl Marx described in the first volume of Capital.

Second, he failed to see that corporate globalization and greater capital mobility would make for a global "reserve army of labor" and weaken labor's bargaining power and political position.

Finally, he failed to recognize that without the Soviet Union's "containment" the United States would be freer to use force in serving its transnationals, forcing Third World countries to join the "free trade" nexus, and preventing them from serving the needs of their citizens (as opposed to the needs of the transnational corporate community).

As this entire process will involve further polarization and immiseration of large numbers, insurgencies are inevitable, justifying more militarization and an escalated war on "terrorism" in a vicious cycle.

What can be more frightening and dangerous to the world than facing the Washington Axis of Evil as the overwhelmingly dominant holder of "weapons of mass destruction," which it is seeking to improve and make more usable, with the elite's longstanding arrogance and self-righteousness at an all-time high, and with no countervailing force in sight? Bin Laden's threat is nothing by comparison.

What is more, the Bin Laden threat flows from U.S. actions, which played a crucial role in building up the Al-Qaeda network, and policies which have made a hell of the Middle East and polarized incomes and wealth across the globe. The cycle of violence will only be broken if the Washington Axis of Evil is defeated, removed from office, and replaced by a regime that aims to serve a broader constituency than oil, the MIC, the other transnationals, and the Christian Right.

Subject: Bush crusade is a sham

Hi Jean,

It`s so obvious the "KINGDOM" is a terrorist safe haven, and has unprecedented immunity. This scenario is what makes the Bush crusade a sham.

This is the results of fanatic Muslims: 15 girls die as zealots 'drive them into blaze'

Daily Telegraph Dr. Eliezer Ben-Joseph"

SAUDI Arabia's religious police are reported to have forced schoolgirls back into a blazing building because they were not wearing Islamic headscarves and black robes.

Saudi newspapers said scuffles broke out between firemen and members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice who tried to keep the girls inside a burning school in Mecca. Fifteen girls were killed as they stampeded to escape from the blazing building in the Muslim holy city. Saudi media and families of the victims have been angry over the deaths of the girls in the fire that gutted the school.

The resulting public criticism of the religious police, or mutaween, is highly unusual. The English-language Saudi Gazette, in a front-page report yesterday quoted witnesses as saying that members of the religious police stopped men who tried to help the girls escape from the building, saying: "It is sinful to approach them."

A civil defense officer told an Arabic-language newspaper, al-Eqtisadiah, that he saw three members of the religious police "beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya".

He added: "We told them that the situation was very critical and did not allow for such behavior. But they shouted at us and refused to move away from the gates."

The father of one of the dead girls alleged that the school watchman refused to open the gate to let the girls out. "Lives could have been saved had they not been stopped by members of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice," the Saudi Gazette said.

The much-feared mutaween roam the streets of the conservative kingdom wielding sticks to enforce dress codes and sex segregation and to ensure that Islamic prayers are performed on time.

Those who refuse to obey the orders of the religious police are usually beaten and sometimes jailed.

Greetings, Jean

In response to Robert Armstrong's eloquent plea, I must say that there are many here in the US that do not agree with the direction our government is taking. In many ways, Dick and W seem to be holding our nation hostage. Only when our news outlets pick up on all the info floating around on the internet, especially at alt news sites, and start to peel away the layers will there be the indignant outcry needed to bring these spiraling events to the fore. Let's hope that this generation's Berstien and Woodard are out there right now preparing to blow this story wide open.
