Miscellaneous Subjects #173: Though Nuts To Cracks
We are going to have lots of though material to consider this week with the ongoing war preparations and manoeuvring by the U.S. to get its way, and I'll do my best to try to counterbalance it all with news from the peace front and other Light-stirring material.
We all knew it wasn't going to be easy when we came here...
But there is always hope at the end of the tunnel. Always!
And remember - as indicated in an email I received from Shauna Crockett Burrows <firstname.lastname@example.org> - "There is still much talk of the inevitability of war. This assertion is not true: more people in the world are against war than in favour, their voices are starting to be heard. Sit and see the world as peace and harmony. Please dont pray against conflict, or war, or particular individuals. Use your spirituality in its purest form by visualising joy and love on earth and among mankind. This does not have to take long or involve preparation or ritual. You can do it anywhere". She recommends to join in a meditation for peace every Friday evening at 7.00pm (local time wherever. RFID tags: Big Brother in small packages (January 13, 2003)
Could we be constantly tracked through our clothes, shoes or even our cash in the future? I'm not talking about having a microchip surgically implanted beneath your skin, which is what Applied Digital Systems of Palm Beach, Fla., would like to do. Nor am I talking about John Poindexter's creepy Total Information Awareness spy-veillance system, which I wrote about last week. Instead, in the future, we could be tracked because we'll be wearing, eating and carrying objects that are carefully designed to do so. The generic name for this technology is RFID, which stands for radio frequency identification. RFID tags are miniscule microchips, which already have shrunk to half the size of a grain of sand. They listen for a radio query and respond by transmitting their unique ID code. Most RFID tags have no batteries: They use the power from the initial radio signal to transmit their response. You should become familiar with RFID technology because you'll be hearing much more about it soon. Retailers adore the concept, and CNET News.com's own Alorie Gilbert wrote last week about how Wal-Mart and the U.K.-based grocery chain Tesco are starting to install "smart shelves" with networked RFID readers. In what will become the largest test of the technology, consumer goods giant Gillette recently said it would purchase 500 million RFID tags from Alien Technology of Morgan Hill, Calif. (...) It becomes unnervingly easy to imagine a scenario where everything you buy that's more expensive than a Snickers will sport RFID tags, which typically include a 64-bit unique identifier yielding about 18 thousand trillion possible values. KSW-Microtec, a German company, has invented washable RFID tags designed to be sewn into clothing. And according to EE Times, the European central bank is considering embedding RFID tags into banknotes by 2005. It becomes unnervingly easy to imagine a scenario where everything you buy that's more expensive than a Snickers will sport RFID tags. That raises the disquieting possibility of being tracked though our personal possessions. Imagine: The Gap links your sweater's RFID tag with the credit card you used to buy it and recognizes you by name when you return. Grocery stores flash ads on wall-sized screens based on your spending patterns, just like in "Minority Report." Police gain a trendy method of constant, cradle-to-grave surveillance. You can imagine nightmare legal scenarios that don't involve the cops. CLIP

Africa starves as rains fail and rulers reap profits (Jan 19)
As millions go hungry, some African leaders have splashed out on jets and fleets of cars. Paul Harris reports from Eritrea and Malawi on a natural disaster compounded by war and corruption. (...) Vast swaths of Africa are starving. On an unprecedented scale a belt of famine, drought and disaster stretches from Sudan to Swaziland. In the Horn of Africa, about 14 million people in Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea are going hungry. In six southern African countries a further 15 million desperately need food aid. When other regions are added, the grim total tops 38 million starving Africans. They are victims of a terrible drought. Fields lie empty, harvests have failed and livestock are dying. But the famine has other, man-made, causes. War, politics and corruption have played a deadly role. Africa's governments must shoulder much of the blame. And, finally, Aids has infected millions, killing the youngest and the strongest. A huge aid effort is under way, but Judith Lewis, head of the World Food Programme in southern Africa, is realistic about the challenge: 'Where can we start?' (...) While millions of Malawians face starvation, one of the main concerns of President Muluzi is trying to change the constitution to allow him to stand for a third term in elections next year. Not that Eritrea and Malawi are alone in Africa when it comes to irresponsible government. In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe's brutal and disastrous destruction of white farms has helped propel more than 7m Zimbabweans towards famine. Yet Mugabe himself has just bought a fleet of Mercedes. At his wife Grace's thirty-ninth birthday party, state-controlled newspapers printed a front-page picture of Mugabe feeding her cake. In Swaziland, King Mswati III has just bought a new private jet for £28m. Yet a quarter of his country needs food aid, 22 per cent of them have HIV, and the entire Swazi health budget is £12.6m. Deep in the Malawian countryside lie the most pitiful victims of the disaster. A walk down a track between fields of stunted maize leads to a hut in the village of Maranga, near to the border with Mozambique. Egiheit Poul is 39 years old, but she looks like an old woman. Her skin is wrinkled and she speaks in a hoarse whisper. Her legs are covered with open sores and are too weak for her to walk. Her daughters carry her around on a chair. Egiheit has Aids. She is part of an epidemic that has swept through Africa like a modern Black Death. One in seven Malawians has the virus. It has wiped out the young men and women of many villages, leaving communities of orphans and grandparents.(...) Across the continent, 29.4m people are infected with Aids. They have few drugs to fight it and, as a result, are more vulnerable to famine. CLIP

Force of Darkness Scatters Universe (Jan 6)
Our universe is getting more and more mysterious. It is not only older than previously thought, according to a study, but it is apparently growing faster than ever. British and American researchers have reported in the latest issue of Science that the universe is at least 11.2 billion years old, up from the previous estimate of 10 billion years. This confirms that the "big bang", which gave birth to the universe and sent galaxies flying into the void, isn't petering out but accelerating. Astronomers believe a mysterious force called dark energy, first mooted by Albert Einstein in 1917, is the culprit.
Were Costa Rican Spheres Ancient Receivers? (Jan 9)
One of the strangest mysteries in archaeology was discovered in the Diquis Delta of Costa Rica. In the 1930s, over 300 spherical stones, perfectly round, anywhere from a few inches to over 8 feet in diameter. They were composed of solid granodiorite; a very hard igneous rock--cut, trimmed and then polished to a high luster. The large ones weigh many tons.

Subject: Dutch civilians inspect weapons of mass destruction at military air base!
Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003
Below is a report on Dutch demonstrations on Martin Luther King Day. Enjoy :-D
Dutch civil inspectors search for nuclear wapons at Volkel military air base.
Volkel, January 18, 2003
Around 2.30 PM this afternoon, about one hundred civil inspectors gained access to the grounds of Volkel military air base in the south east of the Netherlands. According to investigations of several peace groups, there are weapons of mass destruction stored there under US supervision.
Eight policemen with horses were guarding the main gate of the base, however, the civil inspectors gained themselves access on several places at once by cutting through the perimiter fence.
The civil inpectors are from all over Europe, ranging from Finland to the UK, to Belgium.
At the main gate of the base several hundreds of peace activists gathered at the start of the inspections. Speakers came from the Dutch Green Left (Farah Karimi) and Socialist Party (Nico Schouten).
The civil inspections of the US arms of mass destruction stationed at Volkel is initiated by the Anti New War activist Group Netherlands, a peace group formed by more than 200 organisations.
The initiative is in synch with demonstrations held in the US, where January 18th is Martin Luther King day, a national anti war day. Around the globe more groups are supporting the protests with demonstrations, pickets and civil inspections.
Core reason for these global actions is the strange fact that the US government expects of Irak to show all they have in relation to weapons of mass destruction, while they themselves keep their own information and arms top secret. If Irak has to openly show their weapons and their plans, so should the US, and with them all governments supporting the US claims and policy, accouring to the Dutch Anti New War group.

Your latest newsletter highlights the importance of people understanding what the proposed war in Iraq is really all about. Everyone has put forward theories as to the "real" agenda from protection of Israel to preservation of oil. It is interesting that no one seems to really believe it is about weapons of mass destruction. Indeed America has most of these and is the only country to have ever used them on a massive scale (Hiroshima). It is important however to fathom what Iraq is really all about because only then can one hope to address the problem. The difficulty for ordinary folk like us who struggle each day to get to work, pay the bills and generally just stay alive is that we do not have access to reliable hard facts. This is where the "leaders" have an (unfair perhaps) edge. They have their secret services, their political Desks and their diplomatic sources, not to mention highly paid analysts and think tanks etc etc. So the rest of us (though undoubtedly affected by their war games) are left to make simplistic and ill-informed guesses.
From that base of ignorance I sent the attached letter to the Daily Mirror in England. This newspaper has uniquely spoken out against the war from the start consistently and vociferously. Your readers may be able to suggest other theories or even the correct answer. Having that correct answer will be important. Once one knows what the problem is, one has gone over half way to solving it in many cases.

War and Peace and Games of Chess
In time to come I hope people will remember that the Mirror is the only British national news paper to have loudly and persistently objected to America and Britain engaging in an unprovoked, unilateral attack on a sovereign country in time of peace. Messrs Bush & Blair have obviously failed to get public opinion on their side for this war. Does this marauding, lawless conquering ("regime change") find parallels in the exploits of Ghengis Khan or the ravages of the Spanish conquistadors? Watching the Prime Minister's hysterical ranting at Question Time on television this evening as he tried to justify it was painful.
None of it adds up. Is there something more?
If it's not all about oil or Israel, then what? It can't really be weapons of mass destruction, because we have most of those (and are apparently ready to use them!). Is it ultimately about the West buffering China? If we already have Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and now Afghanistan under our control or on our side, that leaves Iraq, Iran and India. Is this why China just played its North Korea card? Is this why India has been testing ballistic missiles ? Is Iraq Move Two in a Western geo-political chess game? Is Move Three to be Iran? Why not just ask the people of Iraq if they would prefer China or the US? Or do we already have the answer?

"Big Brother" is No Longer a Fiction, ACLU Warns in New Report
January 15, 2003
SAN FRANCISCO The United States has now reached the point where a total "surveillance society" has become a realistic possibility, the American Civil Liberties Union warned in a report being released today.
"Many people still do not grasp that Big Brother surveillance is no longer the stuff of books and movies," said Barry Steinhardt, Director of the ACLU's Technology and Liberty Program and a co-author of the report.
"Given the capabilities of today's technology, the only thing protecting us from a full-fledged surveillance society are the legal and political institutions we have inherited as Americans," he added. "Unfortunately, the September 11 attacks have led some to embrace the fallacy that weakening the Constitution will strengthen America."
The ACLU said that its report, Bigger Monster, Weaker Chains: The Growth of an American Surveillance Society, is an attempt to step back from the daily march of stories about new surveillance programs and technologies and survey the bigger picture. The report argues that even as surveillance capacity grows like a "monster" in our midst, the legal "chains" needed to restrain that monster are being weakened. The report cites not only new technology but also erosions in protections against government spying, the increasing amount of tracking being carried out by the private sector, and the growing intersection between the two.
"From government watch lists to secret wiretaps Americans are unknowingly becoming targets of government surveillance," said Dorothy Ehrlich, executive director of the ACLU of Northern California. "It is dangerous for a democracy that government power goes unchecked and for this reason it is imperative that our government be made accountable."
A recent illustration of the danger, according to the ACLU report, is the Pentagon's Total Information Awareness (TIA) program, which seeks to sift through a vast array of databases full of personal information in the hunt for terrorism. "Even if TIA never materializes in its current form," Steinhardt said, "what this report shows is that the underlying trends are much bigger than any one program or any one controversial figure like John Poindexter."
Steinhardt said that Americans haven't yet felt the full potential of the new technology for invading privacy because of latent inefficiencies in how government and businesses handle information. "Database inefficiencies can't be expected to protect our privacy forever," said Steinhardt. "Eventually businesses and government agencies will settle on standards for tying together information, and gain the ability to monitor many of our activities either directly through surveillance cameras, or indirectly by analyzing the information trails we leave behind us as we go through life."
The report, by Steinhardt and Jay Stanley, Public Education Coordinator with the Technology and Liberty Program, is online at http://www.aclu.org/Privacy/Privacylist.cfm?c=39.

ACLU Applauds Senate Efforts To Put a Hold On Total Information Awareness
January 16, 2003
WASHINGTON The American Civil Liberties Union today applauded Sen. Russell Feingold's (D-WI) for moving to prohibit the cyber-snooping program known as Total Information Awareness.
"Public concern and anger about John Poindexter's Total Information Awareness program is beginning to build," said Katie Corrigan, an ACLU Legislative Counsel. "By acting swiftly, Congress can stop a program that if allowed to continue will inevitably lead to intrusive and unnecessary government surveillance of American households."
Sen. Feingold announced his intention to introduce legislation putting a hold on the program at a news conference this morning.
And earlier this week, a left-right coalition including some of the Capital's leading conservative organizations joined with the ACLU in sending a letter to key Congressional committee chairs outlining steps that Congress should take to at the very minimum put a leash on the Total Information Awareness program. Signatories to the letter included the ACLU, the Free Congress Foundation, American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform, the Eagle Forum, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Center for Democracy and Technology.
Total Information Awareness entered the media spotlight late last year after revelations that the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency was developing the infrastructure for the largest and most intrusive electronic surveillance system in history.
The project, led by John Poindexter the highest ranking Reagan administration official implicated in the Iran-Contra scandal would lay the groundwork for a massive database of private sector and government information, which would be capable of producing a detailed cyber-snapshot of every American's daily life.
The database would by the Pentagon's own admission expand domestic intelligence activities to include the monitoring of so-called "non-traditional data sources," including such sensitive information as credit card transactions, hotel reservations or even prescription medication receipts. The system would then use data-mining technology to supposedly detect obscure behavioral patterns suggesting future terrorist activity. While the jury is still out on whether the crystal-ball vision of Total Information Awareness is even feasible, it is clear that the system would be, by definition, out of step with American expectations of privacy, the ACLU said.
The Pentagon is also aware of deep public concern. Last year, it unceremoniously revamped the Total Information Awareness' logo and motto. Initially, the program's logo depicted the all-seeing eye pyramid famously seen on the one-dollar bill shooting a beam of light out over the entire globe. The pyramid graphic was married to the motto Scientia Est Potentia, Latin for "Knowledge is Power."

Senate Blocks Funding for Pentagon Database (Jan 23)
Saying they feared government snooping against ordinary Americans, U.S. senators voted on Thursday to block funding for a Pentagon computer project that would scour databases for terrorist threats. By a voice vote, the Senate voted to ban funding for the Total Information Awareness program, under former national security adviser John Poindexter, until the Pentagon explains the program and assesses its impact on civil liberties. Subject: US Addicted to Drug War Money
Date: 18 Jan 2003
This is from Catherine austin Fitts at http://www.solari.com
Last summer, I made a presentation called "How the Money Works on Organized Crime" to a wonderful group of about 100 people at an annual conference for a spiritually focused foundation in Philadelphia. This is a group of people who are committed to contributing to the spiritual evolution of our culture.
After walking through the various Sam and Dave dilemmas with Sam's SLIM PERCENTAGE profits sugar business and Dave's BIG PERCENTAGE profits drug business, as well as the intersection between the stock market and campaign fundraising and narco dollars for about an hour, I asked the group what would happen to the stock market if we decriminalized or legalized drugs?
The stock market would crash, they said.
What would happen to financing the government deficit if we enforced all money-laundering laws? Since most of the bank wire transfers are batched and run through the New York Federal Reserve Bank, this should not really be that hard, right?
Their taxes might go up. Worse, yet, their government checks might stop, they said.
I then asked them to imagine a big red button at the front of the lectern. By the power of our imaginations, if they pushed that button they could decriminalize narcotics trafficking and stop all money laundering in the United States.
Who would push the button?
It turns out that in an audience of approximately 100 people committed to spiritually evolve our society that only one person would push the button. Upon reflection, 99 would not. I asked why.
They said that if they pushed the button, their mutual funds would go down and their government checks might stop.
I commented that what they were proposing is that an entire infrastructure of people continue to market narcotics to their children and grandchildren to ensure that their mutual and pension funds stay high in value.
They said, yes, that's right.
Which is why I say that America is not addicted to narcotics as much as it is addicted to narco dollars.

Impeach George Bush, Dick Cheney and the Supreme Court 5!
The Republican Axis of Evil: Ashcroft, Rehnquist, Bush, Cheney & DeLay
Want to do more? Visit our Make a Difference page!
In 1999, the Republican Congress impeached President Bill Clinton after a $70 million partisan witch hunt by Republican Special Prosecutor Ken Starr found no crimes by President Clinton - except consensual sex. This was a crime against Democracy.
In 2000, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney lost the Presidential election, both nationally and in Florida. But five Republican "justices" on the U.S. Supreme Court declared Bush the winner by throwing out 175,000 uncounted Florida votes. This was a crime against Democracy.
George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have illegally occupied the White House since January 20, 2001, and have repeatedly failed to carry out their oath to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Planned to invade Iraq - even conquer the Middle East - without a Congressional Declaration of War as required by the Constitution, in violation of the UN charter
Allowed September 11 terrorist attack to succeed by ignoring numerous warnings and failing to take precautions against hijackings
Threatened seven nations with nuclear war
Promised America "perpetual war"
Let Osama Bin Laden escape from Afghanistan
Failed to catch the US weapons scientist responsible for the Anthrax terrorist attacks
Attemped military coup d'etat to overthrow Venezuela's democratically-elected president
Enacted an unaffordable tax cuts for corporations and the rich, and then lied about its effect on federal budget deficits
Returned to massive budget deficits by cutting taxes for the rich
Raided Social Security Trust Fund despite his repeated promises that he would not do so
Cut health care despite firm promises not to do so
Made global warming worse by opposing conservation and promoting oil drilling
Undermined efforts to protect clean air, water, and national parks
Sabotaged key environmental and arms control treaties
Helped Enron steal billions from California consumers
Created a secret Energy Task Force under Dick Cheney, and refused to comply laws requiring disclosure of its activities
Established an unconstitutional shadow government without notifying any Democrats
Appointed business executives who engaged in massive fraud to top positions - including Dick Cheney (Halliburton) and Tom White (Enron)
Appointed Iran-contra criminals to top positions, including Elliot Abrams and John Poindexter
Detained nearly 1200 people without charges in violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments
Authorized government surveillance without warrants, including telephone wiretapping and e-mail interception
Appointed right-wing judges who oppose the Bill of Rights
Had enough? So have we!
That's why we are calling for the impeachment of:
George W. Bush and Dick Cheney The Republican Congress The Supreme Court 5
Is that impossible? No! Read the Constitution:
Article I Section 2: The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.
Article I Section 3: The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments.
Article II Section 4: The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
Article III Section 1: The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour
Here is our plan:
Step 1: We, the People, will impeach George W. Bush using the Articles of Impeachment prepared by Professor Francis Boyle. If Vice President Cheney takes over and continues Bush's policies, we'll impeach him too.
Step 2: We, the People, will elect a Democratic President and Congress in November 2004 with instructions to impeach the Supreme Court Justices.
We have the most powerful political weapon in our own hands - the power to vote. (If you are not registered to vote, click here.)
We can use our voting power to win the next election in a landslide and defeat all Republicans.
To succeed, we must use the Internet to mobilize a get-out-the-vote effort on a scale never seen before.
Join us by creating your own e-mail list of Democratic voters. Start with your holiday card list, and add your relatives, neighbors, and colleagues.
We will create tools to help you maintain your list and to persuade everyone on your list to vote for Democrats.
We will also help you connect with fellow Democrats in your area to plan local outreach efforts, such as setting up card tables at supermarkets, libraries and schools.
If we can persuade 100,000 activists to each create a list of 100 voters, we will win the next election in a landslide.
