Veracity Series #5: I still believe in the good in man

Hello everyone

Considering all the horrors that were revealed in the last few days concerning the torture of human beings by U.S. military personnel and private goons in Iraq - which is merely the tip if the iceberg according to many commentators - one is left with a sense of increasing darkness in the hearts of some very bad "apples". And yet as in the line repeated 3 times by a child's voice in a song I was listening to yesterday, "I still believe in the good in man."

A poignant reminder that all is not dark and that the deepest darkness always precedes dawn...

"Thank you so much Jean for everything you are doing. It is immense and I for one am totally appreciative of it. It is so hard to reach people about truth, I am trying in my humble small way for sure, it is hard. To give up would be harder still, just watching people go about their daily business oblivious of the truth, was reading about the music today, truly fantastic and true - anyway wish there was more I could do but I believe just attempting to share the truth where I can is part of it, somebody has to reach them, it hurts when I get a retort like (you don't know what you are talking about) doesn't stop me, any. Thanks millions for being there and God bless you."

"We know that President Bush felt a calling to run for president that was based in his faith. He said this in his autobiography, that when 9/11 happened, he said he felt like he had a divine calling. This was why he was president. Can you talk about that a little bit? How a person might think that he or she has a divine calling? (...) But when one believes that you've been appointed by God for a particular mission in history, you have to be very careful about that, how you speak about that. Where is the self-reflection in that? Where is the humility in that? Are we asking whether we are being accountable to God's intentions and purposes? Or are we asking for God's blessing on our activities? They're very different things. I think when we are so sure that God is on our side, and that those who are not with us are against us, or even with the terrorists, that's taking another step. (...) when we place God on our side of things, that we are now ridding the world of evil -- that's very dangerous, that one nation has this role to rid the world of [evil]. What about the evil we have committed, that we have a complicity in? The richest nation in this global economic system, in which 2 billion of God's children are poor [and] live on less than $2 a day?"

This film is a carefully crafted collage including footage from the Palestinian Territories, eye-witness testimonies by peace and justice activists, commentary on the historical aspects of the Palestine-Israel conflict, various pro-Palestinian rallies in the San Francisco Bay Area, and concludes with ideas for the best solution to the conflict which will help to create world peace with justice for all.The film leaves few viewers with dry eyes and powerfully drives home the point that American dollars are funding an immoral war against the indigenous Palestinian people, who have been enduring persecution since 1948 when the United League of Nations (made up entirely of European countries, and the forerunner of the UN) gave away Arab land that really was not theirs to give away to Eastern European Zionist Jews for a Jewish supremacist state in the first place. Baghdad -- A year after George Bush's proclamation of 'Mission Accomplished,' a British reporter based in Baghdad concludes that the invasion and occupation has degenerated into "an army in disgrace, a policy in tatters and the real prospect of defeat. Against the odds, America has earned the hatred of ordinary Iraqis." (...) The tide is going out for the US in Iraq. They were not able to use their military strength against Fallujah and Najaf. They have very little political support outside Kurdistan. They can no longer win. It may be one of the most extraordinary defeats in history.

US Marine 'Ashamed' over Actions in Iraq (April 17, 2004)
http://www.islamonline.net/English/News/2004-04/17/article04.shtml
CAIRO - Ever since his return home last April, U.S. Marine Jimmy Massey has had a hard time sleeping, feeling "ashamed" of involvement in killing no less than 30 Iraqi civilians during his one-month mission. "We had no qualms about opening fire on any car crossing a checkpoint without hauling up," he told the French newspaper L'Humanite on Tuesday, April 13. "We, soldiers in the battalion, shot dead 30 people in one month, during our mission to seal off cities and lay a tight siege on villages," Massey recalled. (...) U.S. and British officials argue that former Iraqi soldiers dress in civvies and that ambulance vehicles are loaded with explosives, he said. However, for Massey, there is more than a thin line between allegedly precautionary measure and a "war of genocide" and a virtual stench of civilian deaths. "This is not the way for liberating Iraqis and achieving democracy," he called telling his commander who declined to respond. Massey cited instructions of commanders disregarding lives of Iraq civilians as one of many reasons still driving him nuts. "Throw candies in the school courtyard, and open fire on children rushing to snatch them. Crush them," he recalled officers as saying during drills. (...) With a mixed feeling of guilt and desperation, several American soldiers chose taking their own lives. Some 23 soldiers committed suicide in 2003, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Marines in Iraq. A large number of soldiers want to escape from Iraq, and several of those allowed to leave the war-scarred country never came back, said Luke Hiken, a lawyer in San Francisco and an expert on military affairs.

Shadow of a hologram (April 30, 2004)
http://www.rudemacedon.ca/kaminski/04/0430-hologram.html
(...) After all, if one fact in the official version is found to have been deliberately false — Was the flight over Pennsylvania shot down? Did a missile hit the Pentagon? What if the so-called hijackers never got on the planes? Were bombs planted in the World Trade Center? — then the whole story is false, and should come crumbling down, just like the towers. But the paid-off political functionaries comprising the Kean commission aren't pursuing the important questions. Instead, they're locked in this pre-scripted political vaudeville with Condi Rice and Richard Clarke debating the finer points of presidential briefings. It's a classic distraction. The contemporary term is limited hang-out. I mean, Osama bin Laden was declared guilty at the outset of the commission’s deliberations on the basis of no evidence that would hold up in a court of law. Nothing much has been said about hijackers ever since. Can you say Lee Harvey Oswald? The real problem seems to be that law enforcement has no interest in actually investigating 9/11, only in assuring that the official story holds up, that the designated culprits remain targets, thereby justifying new totalitarian laws against freedom and validating a new U.S. foreign policy that seems aimed at making large amounts of money for government contractors rather than pursuing actualized justice. Which is why the FBI can come out and say there was nothing suspicious about pre-9/11 trading activities when the whole world knows that there was. There hasn't been a single peep about this red-flag issue from the official commission. CLIP

BP Ready Announces Plans to Quit Iraq (April 29, 2004)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1205561,00.html
LONDON -- BP's chief executive delivered a serious setback to hopes of rebuilding Iraq when he said that the oil company has no future there. John Browne, one of Tony Blair's favorite industrialists, indicated he had given up on Iraq because the political and security situation in the country had deteriorated so much. Yet only 18 months ago he was extremely enthusiastic about prospects, lobbying in Washington and London to ensure American rivals did not cut him out of the action. "We need a government, we need laws and we need decisions. We have not got any of that yet. A whole range of steps need to be taken," said the BP boss as he unveiled new record profits this week. (...) Foreign workers have been targeted by militants and the Guardian revealed on Tuesday how work on a number of infrastructure projects had ground to a halt as contractors pulled out their employees. The irony of oil companies not investing in Iraq is that they are flush with money because of high crude prices and many people believed the US invaded the country only to secure future oil supplies.

Armed Militias Put Civilians at Risk in Haiti
http://web.amnesty.org/pages/hti-index-eng
Amnesty International is extremely concerned by the ongoing human rights abuses between rebel forces, armed pro-Aristide militias and Haitian National Police since the beginning of the armed insurrection on 5 February. Fears remain that revenge killings, looting and other attacks may wreak further havoc in the country. AI is also alarmed by the humanitarian consequences of the violence in Haiti. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Haiti's instability threatens to sweep the country into an appalling humanitarian crisis and provoke a potential refugee outflow to neighbouring countries. Haitian judicial institutions have been further weakened by the recent political turmoil, making it difficult to hold authorities and armed opposition groups accountable for the deaths and other acts of violence which have occurred since 5 February. Furthermore, former military and paramilitary leaders responsible for serious human rights violations have taken up leadership positions within Haiti's armed opposition and may play a significant role in defining Haiti's future. If Haiti is to overcome the cycle of violence that has plagued the country during the past decade, it must move quickly to ensure impunity does not take hold in the post-Aristide era. If Haiti and the international community are to learn from the mistakes made following the 1994 multinational intervention in Haiti, every effort should be made to disarm all unofficial armed groups, including rebel forces, armed pro-Aristide militias and armed activists affiliated with opposition political parties. An effective disarmament process will minimise the risks of ongoing human rights abuses and ensure much needed security on the streets across the country.

Initial reports indicated that on April 22, 2004, two trains, one carrying petroleum and the other liquefied natural gas, collided near the North Korean town of Ryongchon, ten miles southeast of the Chinese border, causing a massive explosion. Additional information, both from the North Korean government and other sources indicate that the cause of the explosion was not a result of trains carrying fuel, but was instead caused by the detonation of explosives that the trains were carrying. The accident took place hours after the passage of North Korean Leader Kim Jong Il, who was returning from a visit to Beijing. Initial casualty estimates were reported to be in the thousands, with North Korea reported to having declared a state of emergency. United Nations and Red Cross officials reported early on April 23 that at least 54 people were killed and more than 1,200 injured in the disaster, but the toll could ultimately be much higher as over a thousand buildings were completely destroyed and more buildings were seriously damaged. Biologists have a term for species whose habitats or gene pools are so diminished that extinction is only a matter of time: "the living dead." The Bush Administration has banished many of our most important environmental protections to this limbo. The Clean Air Act is still on the books but is not being enforced. The national forests that Teddy Roosevelt mapped out still show in green on the map, but on the ground chainsaws are converting them into clearcuts and tree farms. Superfund, bankrupt, is a shadow of itself; polluters no longer fear it. The Clean Water Act still calls for swimmable streams and fishable rivers, but its jurisdiction no longer includes the huge factory feedlots or some 60 percent of the nation's wetland habitat. NYC Denies Permit for Huge Anti-War Rally During GOP Convention (28 April 2004)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/043004I.shtml
An anti-war group planning a massive demonstration at the start of the Republican National Convention has been denied a permit to use Central Park because the crowd would be too large. United for Peace and Justice said it planned to appeal. The city parks department denied the group's request to rally on the park's Great Lawn after marching from 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue. A permit request for the march, submitted separately to the police department, is pending. In denying the permit, city officials said the Aug. 29 event would exceed the 13-acre lawn's capacity of 80,000 people and "cause enormous damage to the lawn." The group said on its application that it expected 250,000 demonstrators. "Now we just have to do another piece of organizing, to put pressure on the city to change their mind," said group leader Leslie Cagan. In its appeal, the group plans to state that numerous events with more than 80,000 people have taken place on the lawn, including a 1981 Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel concert that drew at least 400,000 fans and a 1982 anti-nuclear demonstration attended by more than 750,000 people, considered the largest protest in city history. The fruits of poverty - by George Monbiot (March 16 2004)

The wealth of supermarkets is built on monopoly, exploitation and restriction of choice - Every year the list is the same, but every year it still comes as a shock. Of the 10 richest people on Earth, five of them have the same surname. It's not Gates, or Murdoch, or Rockefeller, but Walton. They are the heirs and trustees of the supermarket chain Wal-Mart. And between them they are worth $100bn. Considering how the media fawns on the ultra rich, we hear remarkably little about them. Perhaps this is because their position is rather embarrassing. The company that enriches them trades on the idea that it is the friend of the common man and woman, distributing rather than concentrating wealth. (...) Wal-Mart, which owns the British chain Asda, is now the biggest company on Earth. In the last financial year it took $245bn. It is successful partly because it is one of the most ruthless employers in the western world. In the US its sales clerks made an average of $13,861 in 2001, almost $800 below the federal poverty line for a family of three. It is reported to have told new employees how to apply for food stamps so that they don't starve to death. In November, the police found hundreds of illegal immigrants working as cleaners in its stores. Some of them claimed that they were obliged to work seven nights a week, without overtime, insurance or benefits. By forcing down the prices of the goods they buy, the superstores encourage even more repressive conditions in the companies that supply them. A recent study by Oxfam documents the systematic abuse of workers in the factories and farms that the superstores buy from. The Waltons are so rich because others are so poor. CLIP

Subject: X-Conference, "Dan Burisch", and Disinformation -- a Distinction

Friends,

It appears that several people have read into my expose of the Cabal's trial ballon fake disclosure-"alien-menace" operation meanings which simply are not there, and which I did not say.

The X-Conference, designed by sincere end-UFO-secrecy advocate Steven Bassett, was held in a Washington, DC suburb April 17-18, and featured an array of speakers, the more wothwhile including: UFOFacts member Paola Harris, Grant Cameron, Phil Corso, Jr., Paul Davids, Timothy Good, Terry Hansen, Linda Moulton Howe, Nick Pope, Jim Marrs, Peter Robbins, Dr. Richard Sauder, Dr. Robert Wood and his son, Ryan Wood; ... as well as the usual suspects.

What I did say was that the perfectly-valid venue of a UFO conference, the X-Conference, was taken advantage of and misused by a Cabal operation, which attempted to insert itself and foist upon the audience present the disinformational story of a supposed S-4 [Area 51 complex] scientist, "Dan Burisch". Further, that their "assets" said that this Dan Burisch was prepared to testify before a Congress Hearing that he allegedly had information about: 1) working on an extraterrestrial disease that can be inserted into Earth microbes that would contagion humans, i.e., the dreaded Alien Virus Epidemic; and, 2) an alleged sinister "Tau-IX treaty that exists between certain Extraterrestrial groups and a group of powerful, international, racist, elitist humans."

X-Conference organizer Bassett, using good judgment, had earlier reportedly rejected advances to have the "Dan Burisch" story formally presented at his X-Conference.

Undaunted, several Speakers at the X-Conference chose to insert the Burisch disinformational tale into their presentations anyway. These included: Bill Hamilton, chief purveyor of the Burisch tale, Michael Salla, Ph.D., and Steven Greer, MD.

The Cabal's intent was evidently to float a trial balloon at this gathering, to see if ufologists would bite on a tale of an Area-51 scientist ready to tell a Congressional Hearing about "menacing aliens", and efforts to concoct a deadly extraterrestrial hybrid virus that humans had no immunity to. The Cabal evidently hoped that the Conference-goers would be electrified by this tale, and form a ground-swell of public demand for such a Congressional Hearing, (where such disinformation-designed-as-disclosure could get nationally televised.)

The good news is that since the Dan Burisch tale was exposed as disinformation, it has been disavowed on the internet by even some commentators who usually fall for the Cabal's "evil alien invader" characterizations. Further, the chief spokesman for this failed Burisch multi-year disinformation story, Bill Hamilton, has announced that he is withdrawing from ufology and giving up heading his UFO internet forum.

While one must be cautious in drawing conclusions prematurely, it appears that this several-years-in-the-making disinformation operation went bust.

Subject: Post X-Conference Opinions

Dear Dr. Boylan,

This appears to be a verbatim press release authored by Harry Dschaak.

Thanks for directing my attention to that lengthy paste-up of stories.

I reiterate: this has the aroma of a very elaborate and not yet fully-sprung disinformation operation by the Cabal behind the UFO Cover-Up.

I have never heard of Idahoan Harry Dschaak. Nor his side-kick, Sterling Allan. Dschaak's "eMediaWire" newswire appears to be the electronic equivalent of the free, throw-away weekly advertisers that end up unbidden on people's lawns, i.e., 95+% advertisements. I.e., not a serious news wire service.

Whether "Dr. Dan Burisch" is who he says he is remains to be seen. It is extremely unlikely that a couple of hick amateur reporters would be allowed past shoot-to-kill security around Area 51/S-4 unless the shadow government running that installation wanted some patsies for an "operation". If their purpose were to truly see that competent world press exposure came to the alleged Burisch, then they would have summoned Woodward and Bernstein of the Washington Post.

The believability of this story rests, according to the story itself, on a "volunteer team of amateur researchers". (No truer words have been written.)

Further, their investigations end up on the pathetic website, "Godlike Productions", self-described as devoted to "conspiracy theorists and lunatic fringe". Indeed. The site's April 22 edition prominently features a series of fart stories.

The presence of Michael Salla, Ph.D. and Steven Greer, MD in this roll-out only further confirms that this is a trial ballon in a carefully-laid disinformation operation of some magnitude. Both of these individuals present themselves as interested in UFO disclosure while denying any significance to their Rockefeller connections.

Linda Moulton Howe, a journalist of some competence, has been used and burned before, a la a US Air Force Intelligence sting operation involving disinformation-peddler Sgt. Dick Doty. Her selection for involvement is clearly not an accident.

The good name of documents-researcher Dr. Robert Wood is being used to shore up this story, with his being fed a shredded "document", miraculously restored, which "allegedly" __may__ represent a communication between "a present major world leader" and Dan Burisch. Or may represent a CIA-grade forgery.

In a further attempt to give cachet to this $1.98 report, the e-advertiser "reporters" visit a staff member of Senator Orrin Hatch to try to interest him in having the Senator hold hearings to give Dan Burisch a forum for his "testimony". They admit, "The staff member informed Dschaak and Allan that there are thousands of cases vying to be brought into a Congressional hearing." In other words, they were given the brush-off.

The content of the alleged Dan Burisch's future testimony gives away who is behind this psy-ops and why. If given a national forum such as a Congressional; Hearing, "Dr. Dan Burisch" would speak about:

1) working on an extraterrestrial disease that can be inserted into Earth microbes that would contagion humans, i.e., the dreaded Alien Virus Epidemic; and,

2) an alleged "Tau-IX treaty that exists between certain Extraterrestrial groups and a group of powerful, international, racist, elitist humans," i.e., Sneaky Evil Aliens in cahoots with bad guys on Earth.

Burisch's prescribed agenda does show some signs of intelligence in his Cabal script-writers.

The Cabal of course want to plant fear in the hearts of all Americans, (and people worldwide, once the news coverage goes global.) How better than to threaten the world with deadly alien cooties, for which there is no immunity. And the Cabal wants to sell the idea of "Evil Aliens". How better than to reveal a sneaky pact between Evil Aliens and unnamed Earth Bad Guys. The Bad Guys are conveniently unnamed, but you can be sure will not include the real Cabal.

And the Cabal has gotten sophisticated enough to realize that they can no longer sell a public, whose members include many experiencers, the idea that all the Star Visitors are "evil alien invaders". Any more than they can continue to fool the public that there is no such thing as a UFO. So, it is clear that the Cabal is going to leap-frog from denying UFO reality to engineering disclosure that "contact has happened with the Star Nations, but that some of them are evil." The ultimate purpose being to cow the public into stepping aside while Halliburton and Carlisle Group, etc. get the contract to blow them alien suckers out of the sky, a la Independence Day - the movie.

The roll-out of this horse opera as the U.S. Presidential Campaign starts to get into high gear is, of course, coincidental. Is this an Option-B "October Surprise"? They wouldn't do that, would they?

A couple questions I will ask, though, are: 1) If Disclosure Project's 20 credentialed military/ intelligence/defense-industry witnesses to UFO reality could not get a Congressional Hearing, and then if the shadowy "Dr. Dan Burisch" gets a Congressional Hearing, are we entitled to conclude that the fix is in?

2) Or that the geoplutocrats behind the Cabal get to determine what is accorded a televised public Congressional Hearing on the UFO subject?

US spies 'urged abuse' of prisoners

BY Roy Eccleston, Washington correspondent, and John Kerin

May 03, 2004

THE scandal over the US military's abuse of Iraqi prisoners at a notorious Baghdad prison is deepening, with new claims the possible war crimes were encouraged by American intelligence officers wanting inmates "softened up" for interrogation.

A London newspaper has also broadened the abuse allegations to British troops. The Daily Mirror published photographs at the weekend of what it said was a tortured Iraqi man, after receiving details of the alleged eight-hour beating from two British soldiers.

The claim that the "sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses" by at least six US military police were actively encouraged by intelligence officers came in a confidential military report leaked to The New Yorker magazine.

The magazine also reported that when one Iraqi prisoner was so stressed by questioning — possibly by CIA officers — that he died, his body was packed in ice for a day and then taken from the jail with a mock intravenous drip in his arm to disguise his death.

Army Reserve general Janis Karpinski, who has been stood down over the allegations, told The New York Times on Sunday that she also believed the brutal behaviour had been encouraged by intelligence officers, who were now being protected. "We're disposable," said General Karpinski, who had been in charge of military prisons in Iraq, referring to the reservist military police (MPs) allegedly involved.

"Why would they want the active-duty people to take the blame? They want to put this on the MPs and hope that this thing goes away. Well, it's not going to go away."

The Arab world is outraged at photographs broadcast first on the US current affairs program Sixty Minutes II last week, showing the humiliation of naked Iraqi prisoners at one of the prisons most notorious for torture during the reign of Saddam Hussein.

While General Karpinski said the pictures sickened her when she saw them, and that those responsible were "bad people", she also added that the Abu Ghraib prison cell block involved — 1A — was under the control of military intelligence officers 24 hours a day.

"They were in there at 2 in the morning, they were (there) at 4 in the afternoon," she told the paper, adding that she had never been in the area, despite having overall control of the prison.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer conceded yesterday that the mistreatment provided a "propaganda victory for al-Qa'ida", but stopped short of describing the behaviour as a breach of the Geneva Convention on torture.

However, Human Rights Watch in New York said that under the Geneva Conventions, mistreatment of prisoners that amounted to "torture or inhuman treatment" would be a war crime.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of HRW, a respected private monitor of human rights abuses, claimed the bold behaviour of the soldiers in posing for photographs with the prisoners "suggests they had nothing to hide from their superiors".

The scandal is a devastating blow to the US image in Iraq, where the Iraqi Governing Council is demanding an investigation. Council member Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer told Associated Press the perpetrators must be punished "as war criminals" because "the dignity of an Iraqi citizen is no less than the dignity of an American".

Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker magazine said a leaked Pentagon report by Major-General Antonio Taguba, completed in February, found that between October and December last year there were numerous cases of "sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuses" of Iraqi prisoners at the prison.

Among the alleged abuses were: breaking chemical lights and pouring the phosphoric liquid on detainees; pouring cold water on naked detainees; beating detainees with a broom handle and a chair; threatening male detainees with rape; allowing a military police guard to stitch the wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed against the wall in his cell; sodomising a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick, and using military working dogs to frighten and intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one instance actually biting a detainee.

Six reservist military police, including several women, have been charged and face court-martial. But Hersh also reported some of the accused soldiers claimed they had been urged to act by military intelligence interrogators.

The Taguba report said army intelligence officers, CIA agents and private contractors "actively requested that MP guards set physical and mental conditions for favourable interrogation of witnesses".

The most senior of those charged, Sergeant Ivan Frederick, in letters to his family blamed military intelligence, according to Hersh.

He claimed he questioned some things that were done, such as leaving prisoners with no clothes or in women's underpants, but was told "this is how the military intelligence wants it done". The intelligence officers "encouraged and told us 'great job', they were now getting positive results and information".

He also claimed a man brought in by the CIA and its employees had died. "They stressed him out so bad that the man passed away," he wrote, the magazine said.

"They put his body in a body bag and packed him in ice for approximately 24 hours in the shower. The next day the medics came and put his body on a stretcher, placed a fake IV (intravenous drip) in his arm and took him away."

No record was made that the man had been there.

President George W. Bush, who cites the end of Saddam's torture chambers as a justification for war, has tried to reel in the public relations disaster the claims represent.

"(The prisoners') treatment does not reflect the nature of the American people," Mr Bush said. "That's not the way we do things in America. And so I - I didn't like it one bit."

The British allegations, complete with photographs showing a hooded man being urinated on and assaulted with a rifle butt, were made by two anonymous soldiers to the Daily Mirror newspaper.

"The prisoner, aged 18-20, begged for mercy as he was battered with rifle butts and batons in the head and groin, was kicked, stamped and urinated on, and had a gun barrel forced into his mouth," the paper said.

Barely conscious after eight hours of assaults, he was thrown from a truck. It was not known if he survived.

"If it happened, it's completely unacceptable," said British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"If this is proven, the perpetrators are not fit to wear the Queen's uniform," said Chief of the General Staff General Sir Michael Jackson.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper said military police were expected to arrest six soldiers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment in connection with the apparent abuse by tomorrow.

The Sunday Times reported that the treatment may have been part of a series of revenge beatings for the murder of a British soldier last August, although the Sunday Express also suggested the pictures could have been "a cruel joke".

HRW's Mr Roth said the US had been slack at cracking down on troops who had already been shown to have abused prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. "It is clear that the US has not taken the issue of prisoner abuse seriously enough," he charged.

Torture at Abu Ghraib (May 5, 2004)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/050204B.shtml
American soldiers brutalized Iraqis. How far up does the responsibility go? In the era of Saddam Hussein, Abu Ghraib, twenty miles west of Baghdad, was one of the world's most notorious prisons, with torture, weekly executions, and vile living conditions. As many as fifty thousand men and women-no accurate count is possible-were jammed into Abu Ghraib at one time, in twelve-by-twelve-foot cells that were little more than human holding pits. In the looting that followed the regime's collapse, last April, the huge prison complex, by then deserted, was stripped of everything that could be removed, including doors, windows, and bricks. The coalition authorities had the floors tiled, cells cleaned and repaired, and toilets, showers, and a new medical center added. Abu Ghraib was now a U.S. military prison. Most of the prisoners, however-by the fall there were several thousand, including women and teen-agers-were civilians, many of whom had been picked up in random military sweeps and at highway checkpoints. They fell into three loosely defined categories: common criminals; security detainees suspected of "crimes against the coalition"; and a small number of suspected "high-value" leaders of the insurgency against the coalition forces. (...) A fifty-three-page report, obtained by The New Yorker, written by Major General Antonio M. Taguba and not meant for public release, was completed in late February. Its conclusions about the institutional failures of the Army prison system were devastating. Specifically, Taguba found that between October and December of 2003 there were numerous instances of "sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses" at Abu Ghraib. This systematic and illegal abuse of detainees, Taguba reported, was perpetrated by soldiers of the 372nd Military Police Company, and also by members of the American intelligence community. (...) Taguba recommended that Karpinski and seven brigade military-police officers and enlisted men be relieved of command and formally reprimanded. No criminal proceedings were suggested for Karpinski; apparently, the loss of promotion and the indignity of a public rebuke were seen as enough punishment. (...) As the international furor grew, senior military officers, and President Bush, insisted that the actions of a few did not reflect the conduct of the military as a whole. Taguba's report, however, amounts to an unsparing study of collective wrongdoing and the failure of Army leadership at the highest levels. The picture he draws of Abu Ghraib is one in which Army regulations and the Geneva conventions were routinely violated, and in which much of the day-to-day management of the prisoners was abdicated to Army military-intelligence units and civilian contract employees. Interrogating prisoners and getting intelligence, including by intimidation and torture, was the priority. CLIP

US military in torture scandal (April 30)

Use of private contractors in Iraqi jail interrogations highlighted by inquiry into abuse of prisoners - Graphic photographs showing the torture and sexual abuse of Iraqi prisonersin a US-run prison outside Baghdad emerged yesterday from a military inquirywhich has left six soldiers facing a possible court martial and a generalunder investigation. The scandal has also brought to light the growing and largely unregulatedrole of private contractors in the interrogation of detainees.According to lawyers for some of the soldiers, they claimed to be acting inpart under the instruction of mercenary interrogators hired by the Pentagon.US military investigators discovered the photographs, which include imagesof a hooded prisoner with wires fixed to his body, and nude inmates piled ina human pyramid. The pictures, which were obtained by an American TV network, also show a dogattacking a prisoner and other inmates being forced to simulate sex witheach other. It is thought the abuses took place in November and Decemberlast year. (...) A military report into the Abu Ghraib case - parts of which were madeavailable to the Guardian - makes it clear that private contractors weresupervising interrogations in the prison, which was notorious for tortureand executions under Saddam Hussein. One civilian contractor was accused of raping a young male prisoner but hasnot been charged because military law has no jurisdiction over him.Hired guns from a wide array of private security firms are playing a centralrole in the US-led occupation of Iraq. Torture Not Isolated -- Independent Investigations Needed (Amnesty International)
http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/engmde140172004
(April 30, 2004) -- There is a real crisis of leadership in Iraq -- with double standards and double speak on human rights, Amnesty International said today. "The latest evidence of torture and ill-treatment emerging from Abu Ghraib prison will exacerbate an already fragile situation. The prison was notorious under Saddam Hussein -- it should not be allowed to become so again. Iraq has lived under the shadow of torture for far too long. The Coalition leadership must send a clear signal that torture will not be tolerated under any circumstances and that the Iraqi people can now live free of such brutal and degrading practices," Amnesty International said.

"Iraqi Prisoners Have No Rights"

By Celine Louail
Le Nouvel Observateur

Thursday 29 April 2004

Interview of Amnesty International spokesperson Nicole Chouery

What can you say about the cases of mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners detained by the coalition, photos of which were shown Wednesday night on CBS?

First, I must say that these cases are not new to Amnesty because we've demanded an inquiry into the subject for over a year. What is new is that CBS has shown the pictures, which means that cases of torture that have not been recorded must exist. First, we demand that there be an independent inquiry, and then, that it be tried by an independent court of law. We want these investigations to be open and transparent. The coalition has set up investigations by a military tribunal, the results of which are not public. It's very serious. Of course, the fact that CBS has broadcast these pictures has precipitated an acknowledgement of the particulars by the military. If this were not the case, why didn't the military talk about it before? Amnesty had sent several letters, and, in July, we published a report about the soldiers' torture of Iraqis. However, up to now the authorities have only sent responses which fail to suggest in any way that they have taken our requests into account. The fact that they acknowledge certain facts is insufficient.

Do you think that CBS' broadcast of these pictures may have an impact on American public opinion and therefore on the policy pursued against the Iraqis?

It's important for the American public to see these images which will certainly influence public opinion. However, it is most important to emphasize that, for the moment, these pictures represent the only progress in the year since we originally denounced the acts that were committed.

Let me point out all the same that it's not necessarily good to show these pictures. Let us not forget that people who have been humiliated are involved. It's ambiguous because broadcasting the images may make matters go forward, but at the same time, it's extremely hard on the people who are exposed. Consequently, the photos must be handled cautiously.

What can you say more generally about the conditions of detention for Iraqi prisoners; are their rights upheld?

As far as we know, they have no rights. They're supposed to have access to their family, to a representative, to a lawyer; they should have decent conditions of detention, in other words, minimally a state of cleanliness. Last year, the prisoners were parked in the open air when the temperature was 122 degrees Fahrenheit and had only one bottle of water, when, in those conditions, two were a minimum. At night they were in tents, although it was very cold as soon as night fell.

Moreover, the coalition troops established a data base of the detainees, but their names were transcribed in the Latin alphabet and there a great many possible combinations in the transcription of an Arab name into Latin letters. Families have not succeeded in finding their relatives.

Finally, in most cases, the prisoners have not been charged with any crime. Some have been detained for months; their families don't know where they are, and no one, including the American soldiers, knows any more why they were detained in the first place. It's necessary to open investigations quickly. It won't have served any purpose to show the photos of these men if nothing is done about their situation now.

War Propaganda

by Charley Reese

May 1, 2004

If you step back a moment and think about it, you will realize that you are constantly being propagandized to approve of war – not just the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but war generically.

We should resist. War is killing, maiming and disfiguring human beings. It is so disgusting and horrible in reality that even the most "realistic" Hollywood movie sanitizes it. The news media sanitize it. The government sanitizes war because it doesn't want you to see the coffins. Most of all, it doesn't want you to see the bodies before they are put in the coffins. The Bush administration's real beef with the Arab television station Al-Jazeera is really nothing more than the fact that Al-Jazeera shows the bodies.

No, the Bush administration doesn't want you to see the bodies – not the bodies of our men and women, and not the bodies of Iraqi men, women and children. The administration wants you to see the war as an electronic game with bright lights in the distance and good sound effects, or close-ups of our brave warriors firing their guns at an invisible enemy. It doesn't want you to see the torn flesh, blood, intestines, feces, urine. If you did, you might not support the war, and billions of dollars depend on your support.

The government line is that if you don't approve of the war, you are disloyal. If you don't agree to give the Pentagon whatever it says it wants, you are disloyal. If you don't agree to surrender your civil liberties to the Patriot Act, you are disloyal. If you disagree with the Bush administration, you are disloyal. If you disagree with the chicken-hawk demagogues on radio and television, blathering about the war from the safety of their studios, you are disloyal.

This entire glorification of war – as if the whole and only purpose of the government and the country were to fight wars – smells of fascism. The news media glorify the war and militarism; we get the same dose on television, in the movies and in video games. If the American people aren't careful, they will wake up one day to find out they've become a nation of mindless heel-clickers.

America should not be about war. War is justified only in self-defense. We've been involved in many wars, but the last war fought in self-defense was World War II. That was also the last war that was constitutional, with a formal declaration of war by Congress. Not one single poor soul of the more than 100,000 Americans who have died in the Cold War and the hot wars since 1945 has died in defense of America.

The sad thing is that when the last soldier leaves Afghanistan and Iraq – if that day ever comes – we won't be any better off. Afghanistan will still be Afghanistan. Iraq will still be Iraq. There will be more graves, there will be more Americans without arms and legs, but nothing will have changed. Politicians will be searching diligently for more "bad guys" for the next generation to fight. First it was the fascists, then the communists, now the terrorists. Who's next? God only knows.

We should not equate peace with weakness. We ought to be like the Swiss. Their policy is armed neutrality. They have a sound defensive force and can be in the field in 48 hours, but they will fight only if they are invaded. They do not send their sons to foreign countries to die for political or economic reasons.

We should emulate the Swiss. No American should ever kill or die except in defense of this country. And no corporation should be allowed to make a profit off the blood of American soldiers, as is now happening in Iraq and has happened in every war.

An old Marine general had it right when he said, "War is a racket." Let us all learn to hate it as it deserves to be hated.

12 MONKEYS AND A CHICKEN WALK INTO A BAR

By Alan Cabal

Anxiety is rippling through the scientific community over the epidemic of avian influenza currently affecting the Northern Hemisphere. This epidemic consists of a few discrete strains, any one of which could jump species and embark upon human-to-human transmission.

One of the strains, designated as H5N1, has a remarkable pathogenicity. Should it make the "one small step to man, one giant leap to mankind," as the New England Journal of Medicine so cleverly put it, H5N1 would dwarf all previous pandemics with hundreds of millions of fatalities—about one in every eight people.

In an interview with BBC online, Dr. John McCauley, of the British Institute for Animal Health noted: "There's no reason to say the virus will not continue to evolve so that it can transmit directly from one person to another. There's a realistic chance that could happen. If it does—if the virus becomes adapted to man and can transmit efficiently—there'll be no point in selling a vaccine. You might as well give it away at that stage, because money would be meaningless. The world order would change."

The mutation—a mix of avian and human forms of the influenza virus—occurs when a person infected with a human flu virus contracts an avian flu virus at the same time. Scientists think it's happened before—in 1957 and 1968—and such a situation may have triggered the great Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918. New Scientist magazine reports that the World Health Organization is asking countries in the Southern Hemisphere to donate a portion of their human flu vaccine to vaccinate poultry handlers in southeast Asia, to reduce the possibility of simultaneous contraction.

WHO considered administering the antiviral drugs rimantidine and amantidine to those at high risk, but the avian virus has developed an immunity. Klaus Stohr, a senior virologist with WHO, told New Scientist: "Never in history have we seen such outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza over such a wide area simultaneously."

An AP story on April 20 confirms that a Westchester County man was infected with avian influenza back in November, the second such case reported in the U.S. (The first involved a poultry worker in Virginia.) He had no known contact with birds or poultry. CDC influenza expert Nancy Cox was quoted as saying, "We can't figure out how he was exposed and why he's an isolated case. We need to understand how he got infected."

A fairly bright person with access to human subjects, some infected birds and a run-of-the-mill human flu strain could actively engineer this mutation just about anywhere. The experts have assiduously avoided any discussion of intentional facilitation.

Environmental organizations demand a global ban on GM trees

More than 130 environmental organizations and more than 1200 individual persons around the world have signed a petition for the UN Forum on Forests demanding a Global Ban on GM trees. More information: http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum

With the petition the co-signatory NGOs and individuals protest the decision made last December in Milan in the context of the UN-lead Kyoto process to allow the use of genetically modified trees to tackle climate change.

The petition states that this is in direct contravention of the principles of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

- The risks for biosafety involved in the introduction of genetically modified trees are such that they extend over state borders as well as generations, and should therefore not be taken at the present state of knowledge, states Mikko Vartiainen, a lawyer and activist from People's Biosafety Association in Finland.

- We should follow a very tight precautionary principle with such risks.

The petition presents the risks of contamination for wild trees and forest ecosystems and the risks by horizontal gene transfer from GM trees to microbes.

- But there are several other big unsolved and unknown questions concerning the risks of GMOs, reminds Hannu Hyv-nen, campaign coordinator at The Union of Ecoforestry in Finland.

According to the alarming results by Norwegian Dr. Terje Travik there is now also a possibility that the pollen from GM plants could disturb immunology systems of animals, including human beings.

- Introducing GM trees on the Earth could trigger a series of new pollen allergies. These kinds of scenarios should not be ignored when making decisions which can have irreversible consequences.

The world of the genome is still poorly understood.

Subject: THE POPE & HARBINDER SINGH

About a century or two ago, the Pope decided that all the Sikhs had to leave Italy. Naturally there was a big uproar from the Sikh community. So the Pope made a deal. He would have a religious debate with a member of the Sikh community. If the Sikh won, the Sikhs could stay. If the Pope won, the Sikhs would leave.

The Sikhs realized that they had no choice. So they picked a middle-aged man named Harbinder Singh to represent them. Harbinder asked for one additional condition to the debate. To make it more interesting, neither side would be allowed to talk. The Pope agreed.

The day of the great debate came. Harbinder Singh and the Pope sat opposite each other for a full minute. Then the Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. Harbinder looked back at him and raised one finger. The Pope waved his fingers in a circle around his head. Harbinder pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope pulled out a wafer and a glass of wine. Harbinder pulled out an apple.

The Pope stood up and said, "I give up. This man is too good. The Sikhs can stay."

An hour later, the cardinals were gathered around the Pope asking him what had happened. The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the holy trinity. He responded by holding up one finger to remind me that there was still one God common to both our religions. Then I waved my finger around me to show him that God was all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground and showing that God was also right here with us. I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us from our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of original sin. He had an answer for everything. What could I do?"

Meanwhile, the Sikh community had crowded around Harbinder Singh. "What happened?" they asked. "Well," said Harbinder, "First he said to me that the Sikhs had three days to get out of here. I told him to f *@ k off and not one of us was leaving. Then he told me that this whole city would be cleared of Sikhs. I let him know that we were staying right here." "Yes, and then???" asked the crowd. "I don't know", said Harbinder, "He took out his lunch, and I took out mine!!!
