19 April 1943, The second rising of the Jews in the Ghetto of Warsaw. SS-General Stroop choke the revolt in blood; 56.065 Jews killed.
8 November 2004, About 12,000 US and Iraqi forces begin "Operation Phantom Fury" to retake the "insurgent" stronghold of Fallujah. Officials estimate that between 50,000 and 60,000 people are left in the city.
Two different military actions, for sure, but striking similarities abound as once again defenseless civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence unleashed to uproot the "insurgents" fighting back what they see as the occupation of their country by a foreign invader.
I wonder how history will view this slaughter and such a flattening of a city last seen only in Grozny and during World War II...
Much about this in this compilation - Warning! Gruesome descriptions of horrific human tragedies! - and also about the growing Votergate movement in the US to counter and expose the tricksters who stole this election with, apparently, the acquiescing blessing of the other camp.
Don't expect to hear a word about this massive election fraud in the mainstream US media now under strict orders to keep it under a tight lid. The Internet is nearly the only free speech zone left, but for how long?... Use it while you still can.
Remaining passive is tantamount to ... well! Pick your own choice of qualifying words...

"I was tipped off by a person very high up in TV that the news has been locked down tight, and there will be no TV coverage of the real problems with voting on Nov. 2. Even the journalists are pretty horrified. My source said they've also been forbidden to talk about it even on their own time, and he was calling from somewhere else. He was trying to figure out how to get the real news out on vote fraud."

"I don't think the destruction and attacks on hospitals and clinics in Fallujah are aimed primarily at denying the injured treatment -- they are aimed at keeping the massive killing there hidden from view -- not only pictures but body count. It is as there is nothing living there except the "evil devils" (the insurgents) and the "glorious and heroic freedom fighters" (American troops) and their penitent and straightened out "cohorts" (the Iraqi militia). It is being painted as a black and white movie -- all reds and other shades of color are erased! Otherwise the public here may be somewhat disconcerted at the blood, death and suffering. Here is a picture - http://snipurl.com/aiql - which I think says it all about the hubris and blasphemy of this fanatical genocidal action!"

"There's no soundtrack to this war. No sound of 2,000-pound bombs falling on rows of houses and followed by relentless wailing, the sound of missiles flying overhead, the sound of prayers and cries of "Allah Akbar!" trying to drown out the fear, the sound of AC-130 Spectre gunships demolishing a whole city block in less than a minute, the sound of bodies hitting the sand targeted by Marine snipers. The only reliable information of what's happening on the ground in Fallujah comes from civilians who have left to Baghdad. It's a blatant lie to describe a city of 300,000 as a "militant stronghold". Even if there were only 100,000 residents left, most of these, tens of thousands, are civilians, and as usual in any war, they are the most vulnerable: the poor, the elderly, the sick, the ones who could not get way because of fate, and the bravest of the brave - nurses and doctors. "What does it take to shock them out of their baffling silence?" asked the playwright Ronan Bennett in April after the US marines, in an act of collective vengeance for the killing of four American mercenaries, killed more than 600 people in Fallujah, a figure that was never denied. Then, as now, they used the ferocious firepower of AC-130 gunships and F-16 fighter-bombers and 500lb bombs against slums. They incinerate children; their snipers boast of killing anyone, as snipers did in Sarajevo."

The Dark Night of the Planetary Soul (July 19, 2004)
Recently I had a long conversation with a very spiritual friend who is very concerned about world events. Pointing to some pre-teen boys and girls at our table, he said, Those children will be drafted into the military, unless something happens soon to change the course of history. This war will go on for decades. Our environment is being destroyed, our health care system is in shambles, our political leaders are rapacious dupes of the corporations who are ripping us off. It makes me mad, but when I try to tell people what's really going on, they act like I'm some kind of conspiracy nut. I work hard at my spiritual practice, but I keep getting discouraged about all this stuff. Why does the world situation seem so bleak? Why is it so hard to educate people about these problems and why do they seem to resist the truth so much? What can I do? I have the feeling I'm witnessing a cycle, a cycle that has probably repeated itself many times in the past. Here's my response to my friend. (...) However, the next evolutionary step for human beings is to re-establish conscious ancient connections with the web of life, with the extended consciousness of the human over-soul, and with the multitude of spiritual beings in higher worlds, to offer in self-sacrifice their highly developed individuated consciousness to the Higher Self, and to establish the Kingdom of Heaven here on Earth. Media lockdown : Letter from Roberta Cooper email@example.com">
Hello Family & Friends! On Friday I received a phone call from a good friend who works at CBS -- I've known her for years and she is a Producer for some of the news programs, one well known one in particular. She tipped me off that the news media is in a "lock-down" and that there is to be no TV coverage of the real problems with voting on Nov. 2nd. She said similar "lock-down orders" had come down last year after the invasion of Iraq, but this is far worse -- far scarier. She said the majority of their journalists at CBS and elsewhere in NYC are pretty horrified -- every one is worried about their jobs and retribution Dan Rather style or worse. My source said they've also been forbidden to talk about it even on their own time but she was pissed and her journalistic and moral integrity as what she considers to be a gov't watchdog requires her to speak out, even if covertly, and she therefore asked me to "spread" the word... She said that journalism and the truth is at stake. She said another friend of hers, a producer at MSNBC, said that an anchor by the name of Keith Olbermann had brought it up on his show on Friday eve and the axe came down. He's at least fighting back and talking about it on his "Blog", but she said that people there are worried that he's going to be fired by higher ups. She said at this point the only way that the "real news" was going to be known is if the people started talking about it and made a big enough stink about it to our elected officials, the FEC, and "noise" to the international media, that our own media won't have any choice but to cover it. The only place you'll see this talked about right now is on the internet and on AirAmericaRadio. CLIP - LOTS of actions suggested to turn the tide around! Forwarded by Ken NCEpanacea@aol.com">
Presidential Candidates To Demand Ohio Recount (Nov 12)
David Cobb and Michael Badnarik, the 2004 Green and Libertarian presidential candidates, today announced their joint intent to secure a recount of presidential ballots cast in Ohio. "Due to widespread reports of irregularities in Ohio's voting process, we are compelled to demand a recount of the Ohio presidential vote," the two candidates said in a joint statement. "Voting is at the heart of the American political process and its integrity must be preserved. When Americans stand in line for hours to exercise their right to vote, they need to know that their votes will be counted fairly and accurately. We are acting to protect the rights of the people of Ohio, and the rights of all Americans. Public trust in the democratic process is at stake." The candidates also demanded that Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, a Republican who chaired the Ohio Bush campaign, recuse himself from the recount process. Ohio's election proceedings were marred by numerous press and independent reports of voter intimidation, mis-marked and discarded ballots, problems with electronic voting machines and disenfranchisement -- apparently by design -- of African-American voters. A number of citizen and voting rights organizations will hold hearings this Saturday in Columbus, Ohio to give an airing to, and investigate, these claims. Zogby InternationalVotergate 2004; We Don't Need Paper to Prove Fraud, But We Do Need Money and Leadership, NOW.
Since last Tuesday there has been a justifiable uproar about the major differences between the exit polls in Ohio and Florida and the actual results. Democrats and Republicans, who both saw the same exit polls that showed an electoral landslide in favor of Kerry, have confirmed this. Investigative reporter Bob Parry confirmed from his sources that the Bush campaign was convinced they were going to lose. George H. W. Bush also confirmed this in an interview with The Today Show. So why have the exit polls been so wrong in the last two elections? It is clear that there must have been manipulation in the voting machines. While there's been a lot of talk of problems with not having paper trails, computer fraud is uncovered most of the time without paper trails. As a former C.P.A and auditor, I have used statistical sampling throughout my career with great confidence. With electronic record keeping, it's easy to create a program to falsify the books. But there are ways to uncover that. Auditors have developed statistical ways to cut right through corruption in companies. You don't even need a paper trail. These statistical approaches can be used with almost 100% accuracy to uncover fraud. With the votergate 2004 it's a numbers game just like it is with corporate accounting, even easier. All you're talking about is one number-- total votes for each candidate. There's a huge difference between polling what WILL happen and polling something that has already happened. The reliability of polling something that has already happened is highly reliable vs. predictive polls, like Gallup or Zogby, which is very risky. The reliability can be, not plus or minus 4 percent as we see with predictive polls, but rather a much more reliable plus or minus one half or one tenth of one percent with exit polls, because those are based on asking people who already voted. I would even say that if the exit polling were done in the key precincts of Florida and Ohio, which it was, then these results should be practically "bullet proof."It is important that people know how accurate random sampling of historical events can be in order for them to understand how unlikely it is that the exit polls were wrong. So if you want to fight the battle correctly, you must get more statisticians and forensic accountants involved as well as the lawyers. These statisticians can show with great credibility the probability of manipulation within the computer programs used for counting the ballots. They do this kind of work all the time to uncover fraud based upon computer manipulation in commercial and corporate activities. And these types of expert analyses are admissible in a court of law. The problem with all of this is determining who is going to fund such an investigation. Where will the money come from? Perhaps the Kerry/Edwards campaign fund has some surplus that can be used. It is possible that the DNC has some excess funds. How about the 527s and PACs who spent millions on ineffective political ads, coming up with a few million? In addition, who is going to lead the process of getting this done? This kind of an effort requires solidarity along with an organized coordinated effort. It's easy to come up with the forensic and technical people to get this done, but we need a strong leader and solidarity. Leadership and funding-- these are the two real challenges that must be dealt with in the coming days. We have a Watergate story here that could give the media a post election explosive news story that could make the 2000 Florida vote debacle look like small potatoes. We need to get the media to see that votergate 2004 is huge news and we need to quickly fund the investigation and get Democratic leaders behind it.Sheldon Drobny is CPA and Venture Capitalist and co-founder of Air America Radio.(11/9/2004) - By Sheldon Drobny, Op-Ed News (Forwarded by Mark Graffis email@example.com">)
House Committee Requests Voting Technology Audit (November 10th, 2004)
WASHINGTON D.C. - On November 8th, the House Judiciary Committee sent a follow-up letter to the US General Accountability Office (GAO) requesting an immediate investigation into the effectiveness of technologies used in the 2004 election, including E-Voting machines. The letter, addressed to the Comptroller General David Walker of the GAO yesterday, cites more than 30,000 incident reports logged by the Election Incident Reporting System (EIRS), which was developed by the Verified Voting Foundation (VVF), Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR), and the Election Protection Coalition (EPC). The report was accompanied by specific details of 265 incidents from the growing nationwide database at VotersUnite.org.The Committee had originally sent a first request for an audit to the GAO on November 5.
The Naysayers Weigh (Nov 12)
ABC, NBC give Internet theorists short shrift - Instead of conducting investigations and research with an open, unbiased mind, the mainstream media has chosen instead to take the path of least resistance in reporting on the various allegations of voting fraud in the the 2004 election. On Wednesday, ABC news saw to it that internet "conspiracy" theories were sufficiently debunked so that they could focus on the "real" stories going into the weekend - the death of Yassir Arafat and the war in Iraq. While the evening news show hosted by Peter Jennings managed to calm some of the claims made on the internet (how much debunking can one do in 60 seconds?), they managed to do so without serious inquiry. In much the same vein, Chip Reed took the internet bloggers and controversial web sites to task in a piece for NBC's Nightly News, though the material managed to include a clip of a feisty Ralph Nader saying, "This election was hijacked from A to Z." At the same time, the controversy continues to swell. Newspapers across Ohio report that lawyers for defeated Democratic candidate John Kerry are on the ground in the state on a "fact finding" mission, checking for irregularities and inconsistencies. Nader, earlier in the day called for a recount of the New Hampshire vote at the behest of some 2000 ardent supporters. Green Party candidate David Cobb and Libertarian candidate Michael Bednarik are seeking a recount of the election in Ohio. Activist Bev Harris of BlackBoxVoting.org is reportedly seeking a recount in Ohio under a law that grants the privilege to any group of five or more voters. Harris has already begun filing a massive Freedom of Information Act request for volumes of information relating to the election nationwide and has activated a corps of researchers and common citizens in a "Help America Audit" effort. All of this seemingly has fallen beneath the radar of corporate media, who seemingly are content to accept the results from November 2nd without a second look or even so much as an audit. CLIP
Diebold's source code found (Nov 10)
"Dr. Avi Rubin is currently Professor of Computer Science at John Hopkins University. He 'accidently' got his hands on a copy of the Diebold software program--Diebold's source code--which runs their e-voting machines. Dr. Rubin's students pored over 48,609 lines of code that make up this software. One line in partictular stood out over all the rest: #defineDESKEY((des_KEY8F2654hd4" All commercial programs have provisions to be encrypted so as to protect them from having their contents read or changed by anyone not having the key... The line that staggered the Hopkin's team was that the method used to encrypt the Diebold machines was a method called Digital Encryption Standard (DES), a code that was broken in 1997 and is NO LONGER USED by anyone to secure programs. F2654hd4 was the key to the encryption. Moreover, because the KEY was IN the source code, all Diebold machines would respond to the same key. Unlock one, you have then ALL unlocked. I can't believe there is a person alive who wouldn't understand the reason this was allowed to happen. This wasn't a mistake by any stretch of the imagination."
A Legitimate Recount Effort in Ohio (November 12, 2004)
Efforts to launch an official statewide recount of the Ohio presidential vote are underway. While it's unclear if a recount will result in a Kerry victory, it's likely to highlight many flaws in Ohio elections that may have tilted results toward Republicans and against Democrats.
Keith Olbermann Plays Hardball, Breaks Votergate Story on National, Mainstream Media (November 8, 2004)
also at http://bellaciao.org/en/article.php3?id_article=4227
Kudos to Keith Olbermann of MSNBC. Finally, someone in the mainstream media took the story about the rampant evidence of election fraud to prime time. Following the tepid journalism from Chris Matthews, Olbermann reported tonight about the two major stories we have been following since election night. Olbermann first reported on the events in Warren County, Ohio on election night. Warren was one of the last counties to report and as such, directly contributed to the state being called for Bush. What makes Warren County newsworthy is that election officials decided to lock down the vote count and excluded any observation of the tallying process. The lame excuse given was homeland security concerns. Olbermann reported tonight that those concerns actually stemmed from the Department of Homeland Security, who informed them that on a scale of 1-10, Warren represented a 10 in terms of security concerns. Warren County represents a mostly rural district between Dayton and Cincinnati. I would be very interested to hear about the source Tom Ridge used to determine that this small portion of a Midwest state had suddenly become a security threat. While that is beyond suspicious, Olbermann went on to report on the startling results from 29 Florida counties which had all flipped their vote from their registration. In each of these counties we saw statistically improbable results favoring George W. Bush every time. This story had been on the internet for a week now, but had been all but ignored by all mainstream media until Keith Olbermann finally proved there can be honesty in journalism. Keiths guest was the Honorable John Conyers, Congressman from Michigan. Mr. Conyers has led the charge for the GAO to investigate the mounting reports of irregularities. Mr. Olbermann tried his best to ask pointed questions, referring to the possibility of the election being rigged or fixed. Conyers tried his best to stay above the political fray but in the end the cold fact remained that something has gone wrong in this election. CLIP

Bush's 'Incredible' Vote Tallies (November 9, 2004)
George W. Bushs vote tallies, especially in the key state of Florida, are so statistically stunning that they border on the unbelievable. While its extraordinary for a candidate to get a vote total that exceeds his partys registration in any voting jurisdiction because of non-voters Bush racked up more votes than registered Republicans in 47 out of 67 counties in Florida. In 15 of those counties, his vote total more than doubled the number of registered Republicans and in four counties, Bush more than tripled the number.Statewide, Bush earned about 20,000 more votes than registered Republicans. By comparison, in 2000, Bushs Florida total represented about 85 percent of the total number of registered Republicans, about 2.9 million votes compared with 3.4 million registered Republicans.Bush achieved these totals although exit polls showed him winning only about 14 percent of the Democratic vote statewide statistically the same as in 2000 when he won 13 percent of the Democratic vote and losing Floridas independent voters to Kerry by a 57 percent to 41 percent margin. In 2000, Gore won the independent vote by a much narrower margin of 47 to 46 percent. CLIP Similar surprising jumps in Bushs vote tallies across the country especially when matched against national exits polls showing Kerry winning by 51 percent to 48 percent have fed suspicion among rank-and-file Democrats that the Bush campaign rigged the vote, possibly through systematic computer hacking.Republican pollster Dick Morris said the Election Night pattern of mistaken exit polls favoring Kerry in six battleground states Florida, Ohio, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Iowa was virtually inconceivable.Exit polls are almost never wrong, Morris wrote. So reliable are the surveys that actually tap voters as they leave the polling places that they are used as guides to the relative honesty of elections in Third World countries.
To screw up one exit poll is unheard of. To miss six of them is incredible. It boggles the imagination how pollsters could be that incompetent and invites speculation that more than honest error was at play here. CLIP

Violence Grips Iraq as Fallujah Battle Rages (12 November 2004)
Waves of devastating violence swept through Iraq yesterday with US forces still mired in streetfighting in their attempt to capture the rebel stronghold of Fallujah. A suicide bombing killed at least 19 people and injured 15 in Baghdad, the explosion destroying 20 buildings and 25 cars. The northern city of Mosul was reported "out of control", with police stations stormed and masked gunmen roaming the streets. Fighting also continued in Ramadi with large parts of the city in the hands of insurgents. In Fallujah, the American military claimed to have killed more than 600 resistance fighters and to have pinned hundreds of others into a corner for a final assault. At least 18 US troops and five Iraqi government soldiers have been killed so far in Fallujah, military officials said. Major-General Richard Natonski, commander of the 1st Marine Division, said 69 American personnel and 34 Iraqi government soldiers had been wounded since the assault began on Monday. The military had been slow in releasing official, comprehensive reports, citing security but about 225 injured soldiers are in Landstuhl Medical Centre in Germany. The US administration and its sponsored Iraqi government had insisted the onslaught on Fallujah was justified because it had become the epicentre of insurgency in Iraq. General Richard Myers, head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, declared the offensive was " very, very successful". But he also admitted: "If anybody thinks Fallujah is going to be the end of the insurgency in Iraq, that was never the objective, never our intention, and even never our hope." CLIP - MUCH MORE ON THE Fallujah Battle BELOW... I HEARD ON THE TV NEWS TONIGHT HERE IN QUEBEC THAT SO FAR 5000 CIVILIANS HAVE DIED IN FALLUJAH IN THE CURRENT SLAUGHTER!...
Will Bush Flatten Fallujah? by Kurt Nimmo (Nov 13) http://progressivetrail.org/articles/040408Nimmo.shtml
Imagining the probable future of places such as Fallujah, Sadr City, Nasiriyah, Karbala, Kut, and Ramadi, I recall the photographs of Grozny (Djohar), Chechnya, taken by the Gamma Press Agency photographer Eric Bouvet. "In February when I entered Grozny, it was as if I was hit by an apocalyptic vision," Bouvet writes. "In 20 years of covering wars I never had the occasion to feel like a astronaut landing on another planet. I had visited Grozny four times in the last war, but this time I couldn't even be sure where I was. Where Minutka Square -- with it imposing buildings that lead to Lenin Avenue -- once was nothing remained, just a huge, imposing void. The Russians had dynamited the city, leaving it totally in ruins." Sooner or later, in desperation, Bush will surely order the destruction of wide swaths -- inhabited by "bad guys" -- of Iraqi cities in response to the undefeatable Shia and Sunni uprisings against the occupation. It is inevitable. Like Sharon and the Likudites, Bush's ideological mentors, the US military will eventually repeat the atrocities and violations of human rights and international law the Israelis eagerly committed in the Jenin refugee camp in September of 2000. Civilians always pay the price for any "up tick" in support for the resistance -- be they Palestinians, Chechnians, or Iraqis. Both Republicans and so-called liberal Democrats will fervently support the flattening of Iraqi cities and the mass murder of civilians, especially now that the Shia have joined the Sunnis in resisting Bush's neoliberal plans for Iraq. Or should I say the Likudite plan for the Arab Middle East? In fact, Democrats have a long track record of supporting state terrorism directed against civilians, from the torching of Vietnamese villages to the cluster bombing of neighborhoods in Yugoslavia. Bush Senior, Clinton, and Bush Junior all supported and kept in place brutal sanctions that resulted in the death of 500,000 Iraqi children from 1991 until Bush invaded Iraq last year. All three administrations engaged in the recurring slaughter of Iraqi civilians over the same period of time. CLIP
Iraq: The Unthinkable Becomes Normal - by John Pilger (November 12, 2004)
Edward S. Herman's landmark essay, "The Banality of Evil," has never seemed more apposite. "Doing terrible things in an organised and systematic way rests on 'normalisation'," wrote Herman. "There is usually a division of labour in doing and rationalising the unthinkable, with the direct brutalising and killing done by one set of individuals . . . others working on improving technology (a better crematory gas, a longer burning and more adhesive napalm, bomb fragments that penetrate flesh in hard-to-trace patterns). It is the function of the experts, and the mainstream media, to normalise the unthinkable for the general public." On Radio 4's Today (6 November), a BBC reporter in Baghdad referred to the coming attack on the city of Fallujah as "dangerous" and "very dangerous" for the Americans. When asked about civilians, he said, reassuringly, that the US marines were "going about with a Tannoy" telling people to get out. He omitted to say that tens of thousands of people would be left in the city. He mentioned in passing the "most intense bombing" of the city with no suggestion of what that meant for people beneath the bombs. As for the defenders, those Iraqis who resist in a city that heroically defied Saddam Hussein; they were merely "insurgents holed up in the city," as if they were an alien body, a lesser form of life to be "flushed out" (the Guardian): a suitable quarry for "rat-catchers," which is the term another BBC reporter told us the Black Watch use. According to a senior British officer, the Americans view Iraqis as Untermenschen, a term that Hitler used in Mein Kampf to describe Jews, Romanies and Slavs as sub-humans. This is how the Nazi army laid siege to Russian cities, slaughtering combatants and non-combatants alike. Normalising colonial crimes like the attack on Fallujah requires such racism, linking our imagination to "the other." The thrust of the reporting is that the "insurgents" are led by sinister foreigners of the kind that behead people: for example, by Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian said to be al-Qaeda's "top operative" in Iraq. This is what the Americans say; it is also Blair's latest lie to parliament. Count the times it is parroted at a camera, at us. No irony is noted that the foreigners in Iraq are overwhelmingly American and, by all indications, loathed. These indications come from apparently credible polling organisations, one of which estimates that of 2,700 attacks every month by the resistance, six can be credited to the infamous al-Zarqawi. CLIP
Yasser Arafat: 1929-2004 (12 November 2004)
Yasser Arafat will be remembered as a man of tremendous personal courage and unswerving loyalty to the cause of Palestinian liberation. Millions throughout the world will dismiss with contempt the slanders heaped on Arafat, the international symbol of Palestinian resistance for nearly four decades, by the likes of Ariel Sharon and George W. Bush, war criminals both, who have the temerity to call Arafat a terrorist. On this question, Arafat himself gave an excellent response in his speech to the United Nations in 1974: The difference between the revolutionary and the terrorist lies in the reason for which he fights. For whoever stands by a just cause and fights for freedom and liberation of his land from the invaders, the settlers and the colonialists, cannot possibly be called terrorists... As to those who fight against just causes, those who wage war to occupy, colonise and oppress other people, those are the terrorists. Those are the people whose actions should be condemned, who should be called war criminals; for the justice of the cause determines the right to struggle. The scale of the mourning amongst the Palestinians shows the deep affection in which Arafat is held. It is, however, above all necessary to draw the political lessons of his tragedy, which is very much the tragedy not only of the Palestinians, but the Arab masses as a whole. There has never been a lack of courage, sacrifice or willingness to struggle among the brutally exploited working masses of the Middle East. What has been lacking, and which Arafat was unable to provide, is a viable revolutionary perspective for ending imperialist domination and its inevitable consequencespoverty and repression. The ultimate failure of Arafats national project cannot be ascribed to the subjective attributes of an individual. In any event, Arafats strengths and weaknesses reflected the problems and contradictions of the political movement he led. CLIP

Bush Makes Not-So-Good Headlines in Europe (Nov 4)
LONDON - The re-election of President Bush dominated British newspapers Thursday, and many cast impartiality aside in reporting the result. "How can 59,054,087 people be so DUMB?" the liberal Daily Mirror asked in a Page One headline. Inside, several pages of coverage were headed "U.S. election disaster."The Independent bore the front-page headline "Four more years" on a black page with grim pictures including a hooded Iraqi prisoner and an orange-clad detainee at Guantanamo Bay.The left-leaning Guardian led its features section with a black page bearing the tiny words, "Oh, God." Inside a story described how Bush's victory "catapulted liberal Britain into collective depression."Across Europe, many newspapers expressed dismay at the prospect of another term for Bush, a president often regarded as inflexible and unilateralist."Oops they did it again," Germany's left-leaning Tageszeitung newspaper said in a front-page English headline. The cover of the Swiss newsmagazine Facts called Bush's re-election "Europe's Nightmare." "Victory for the hothead: how far will he go?" asked another Swiss weekly, L'Hebdo.

Consternation over John Kerry's defeat diverts us from the real issue:World domination by a subversive occult elite. Although Bush and Kerry aroused deep antagonism, they were identical on the important issues: Iraq, 9-11 fraud, "terror" hoax, Patriot Act and illegal aliens. Democrats ready to confirm defender of torture as new US attorney general (Nov 12)
George Bush announced Wednesday his nomination of current White House Legal Counsel Alberto Gonzales to replace Attorney General John Ashcroft, who submitted his resignation on Tuesday. The nomination of Gonzales confirms that the Bush administration is preparing to escalate its attacks on democratic rights and its defiance of international law. Ashcroft became something of a symbol of the Bush administrations contempt for constitutional safeguards and its assertion of unprecedented police powers. His tenure saw an unrelenting attack on democratic rights, including the implementation of the Patriot Act, the mass arrests and deportations of Muslims and Arabs following September 11, and the detention without charge of US citizens Yasser Hamdi and Jose Padilla. Ashcroft will be remembered for his assertion to a congressional committee that critics of administration policy were giving aid to the terrorists. Gonzales is, if anything, more consistent in his hostility to constitutional principles and civil liberties. He is infamous for having authored a 2002 memo arguing that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to the war against Afghanistan. He is also implicated in discussions within the administration on legal justifications for the use of torture, military tribunals, and the claim that the president, as commander-in-chief in the war on terror, has virtually unlimited powers.Demonstrating their utter prostration before Bush and the Republican right, and their indifference to democratic rights, leading Democrats have already announced that Gonzales will have little trouble being confirmed by the Senate. Although the Republicans wield a majority in the chamber, the Democrats have more than sufficient votes to mount a filibuster and thereby block a nomination. They have gone out of their way to make clear, however, that they will not exercise that option. (...) The Democrats are well aware of Gonzaless role in the administration. In a speech he gave on May 26, 2004, Gore himself pointed to Gonzales as one of the advisors who had crafted the administration policy that led to the torture of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. In earlier speeches, Gore denounced as a Big Brother style of government the very policies pushed by Gonzales.
U.S.: Attorney General Nominee Undermined Rights (November 10, 2004)
Former White House Counsel Helped U.S. Circumvent International Legal Obligations Alberto Gonzales is a poor choice for the top law enforcement post in the United States, Human Rights Watch said today. President George W. Bush today nominated Gonzales to replace John Ashcroft as attorney general. As White House counsel, Gonzales was the architect of the Bush administrations policy of placing detainees captured in the fight against terrorism beyond the protection of any law. That policy opened the door to brutality against detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay and unfair legal proceedings against them. CLIP

Paging China! Help us! Urge the U.S. government to respect freedom of the press! It does sound topsy-turvy, doesn't it? Generally, it's China and Zimbabwe that are throwing journalists in prison, while the U.S. denounces the repression over there. But now similar abuses are about to unfold within the United States, part of an alarming new pattern of assault on American freedom of the press. In the last few months, three different U.S. federal judges, each appointed by President Ronald Reagan, have found a total of eight journalists in contempt of court for refusing to reveal confidential sources, and the first of them may go to prison before the year is out. Some of the rest may be in prison by spring.(...) In May, Iran's secret police detained me in Tehran and demanded that I identify a revolutionary guard I had quoted as saying "to hell with the mullahs." My interrogators threatened to imprison me unless I revealed my source. But after a standoff, the Iranian goons let me go. Imprisoning Western journalists for protecting their sources was too medieval, even for them. Let's hope the U.S. judicial system shows the same restraint as those Iranian thugs.

The collapse of the WTC (Nov 11, 2004)
As I'm sure you know, the company I work for certified the steel components
used in the construction of the WTC buildings. (...) This story just does not add up. If steel from those buildings did soften or melt, Im sure we can all agree that this was certainly not due to jet fuel fires of any kind, let alone the briefly burning fires in those towers. That fact should be of great concern to all Americans. Alternatively, the contention that this steel did fail at temperatures around 250C suggests that the majority of deaths on 9/11 were due to a safety-related failure. That suggestion should be of great concern to my company. There is no question that the events of 9/11 are the emotional driving force behind the War on Terror. And the issue of the WTC collapse is at the crux of the story of 9/11. My feeling is that your metallurgical tests are at the crux of the crux of the crux. Either you can make sense of what really happened to those buildings, and communicate this quickly, or we all face the same destruction and despair that come from global decisions based on disinformation and chatter. Cat Stevens wins peace prize (Nov 10, 2004)
ROME, Italy (AP) -- The singer once known as Cat Stevens -- branded by the United States as a potential terrorist risk -- has been awarded a peace prize in Rome for his humanitarian work. Mikhail Gorbachev presented Yusuf Islam with the "Man for Peace" award at the opening of a meeting of Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The former Soviet leader kissed the singer on the cheeks and praised him for standing by his convictions despite personal hardships. The singer last made headlines in September, when he turned up on Washington's no-fly list for having suspected ties to terrorists, a claim he has called ludicrous. CLIP
China Rocks the Geopolitical Middle East
TEHRAN - Speaking of business as unusual. A mere two months ago, the news of a China-Kazakhstan pipeline agreement, worth US$3.5 billion, raised some eyebrows in the world press, some hinting that China's economic foreign policy may be on the verge of a new leap forward. A clue to the fact that such anticipation may have totally understated the case was last week's signing of a mega-gas deal between Beijing and Tehran worth $100 billion. Billed as the "deal of century" by various commentators, this agreement is likely to increase by another $50 billion to $100 billion, bringing the total close to $200 billion, when a similar oil agreement, currently being negotiated, is inked not too far from now. (...)
A glance at Chinese security narratives, and it becomes patently obvious that Beijing shares Iran's deep worries about US unipolarism culminating in, as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unilateral militarism. Various advocates of US preeminence, such as William Kristol, openly write that the US should "work for the fall of the Communist Party oligarchy in China". Unhinged from the containment of Soviet power, the roots of US unilateralism, and its military manifestation of "preemption", must be located in the logic of unipolarism, thinly disguised by the "coalition of the willing" in Iraq; the latter is, in fact, as aptly put by various critics of US foreign policy, more like a coalition of the coerced and bribed than anything else. But, realistically speaking, what are the prospects for any regional and or continental realignment leading to the erasure of US unipolarism, notwithstanding the US military and economic colossus bent on preventing, on a doctrinal level, the emergence of any challenger to its global domination now or in the future? The strategic debates in all three countries, Russia, China and Iran, feature similar concerns and question marks. CLIP

VERY, VERY POWERFUL COMMITMENT - HOPEFULLY TO BE EMULATED WIDELY...
Date: 11 Nov 2004
Subject: Voting Scandal of 2004 - Galvanized into action
From: Ariel Ky firstname.lastname@example.org">
I want to share with you how this presidential election has shifted my consciousness... As the evidence mounts of a dishonest, rigged election, the home truth has settled in that we are left with only the tattered farce of a democracy. Kerry won by a landslide, but we were robbed of that victory by the manipulation made possible with touch screen computerized voting machines and Scantrons.
The night of the fateful election, I visited two precincts to see if they had at least published the paper trail that does exist with the Diebolds the County of Alameda uses, a summary of activity on each machine. It's not a paper ballot, but at least you can see how many Republicans voted and how many Democrats did and get a summary of how many votes were cast for each candidate and proposition. That was one concession lent us by the courts in the State of California in the lawsuit brought against Diebold by Bev Harris of blackboxvoting.org. I had worked as a precinct clerk in the recall election earlier this spring (when Gray Davis was ousted as governor and Schwartzenegger came in) and witnessed a preselected vote for Dean, 0 tallies, and other irregularities. In the discovery process for the lawsuit against Diebold, I had written an account of what happened.
Sure enough, the results were posted with the paper tallies taped to the wall of the church where my precinct votes. I copied down all the results so that I can compare how it changes the totals when the mail-in and provisional ballots are counted and the official results are posted. I don't trust our Registrar's office to reverse the result of races whose outcome gets changed once paper ballots get counted.
I stayed up late watching the results come in, using the Internet to check swing state returns. The next day I taught three ESL classes of three hours each, so I was pretty tired by the end of the evening. The results came in very quickly and Kerry conceded mid-day, so I knew all the paper ballots were never counted or added to the tally before the results were declared. I also knew this was a record turnout - never before had so many Americans voted in a presidential election in my lifetime. Evidence of malfeasance was already pouring in.
That day I went through such a period of feeling disappointed, sore, sad, blue, beaten, frustrated, angry and weak. I cried in front of my evening class. The next day, though, I woke up feeling energized, galvanized into action. I gained crystal clarity that we no longer had a democracy, only the farce of one to placate the masses. I understood my role as never before as a dissident and revolutionary, mystic and visionary. All of us with this awareness are now being called into action - we have a great responsibility.
Any democracy we have now is what we create for ourselves. It begins with us. I became wholly engaged at a level I never felt before because I was so disgusted and alienated that I kept withdrawing from any involvement with the process. I worked on Kucinich's campaign for over a year, but could not bring myself to campaign for Kerry, another rich white man who might do some things differently but basically supported a continuing war and expanded role for the military to which I am much opposed.
Still Kerry was the choice of all the people who were fed up with Bush's destructive policies. And I felt that he would be somewhat more amenable to listening to the will of the people. Bush's stance has always been, "Who Cares What You Think?" But we are going to have to fight for our voice to be heard and not accept the treachery wreaked against us. We should do everything we can to get this election declared a fraud and voided and rehold it. We might see some interesting things if people vote twice, both outside the polls with a paper ballot and inside on the machines. A volunteer force of concerned Americans could be mustered to create this second vote as audit. It's really quite feasible.
The Great American Experiment in Democracy Failed
Just a little over 200 years and the same power-hungry, wealthy elite that made Europe so unpleasant that millions immigrated to the United States is again oppressing the majority of people and running amok, fomenting wars to get rich off of and meet their own empirical goals. Okay, where does that leave us then? We at least have the ideals of equality, liberty and goodwill to others that most of us believe in. Maybe it's time to create a new experiment in freedom and democracy, one that supports opportunity and prosperity for everyone in the world. Maybe our tired old ideas need to be retired and fresh new ones brought into play that at least give a chance for a working democracy to be forged out of this chaos.
Democracy begins with me and each one of us who realizes that political activity and caring for the people in our community must be part of our daily lives. So I have decided to work to inform young people in the high schools about declaring conscientious objector status (anticipating the draft that will go forward this spring unless we take action to stop it), to draw idealistic teenagers into the political process and start visioning how they want their world to look and what opportunities they want to create for themselves.
I have also decided to work locally with a coalition of people to take back local control of our school system that was manipulated away from us in a takeover by the state. I am working on the progressive campaign of Nancy Nadel for Mayor of Oakland in 2006 in my role as a visionary.
I also want to support Bev Harris in the work that she is doing to challenge the results of this election. (See http://www.blackboxvoting.org)
The clarity of my vision today is unshakeable, unassailable, implacable. I don't need agreement or validation to move forward. I understand that I am a cosmic being who incarnated this lifetime on earth to help make the spiritual shift that uplifts humanity beyond the need for war into a greater sense of oneness among each other and all life on earth and in the universe. I also have had telepathic contact with extraterrestrials who have informed me that the way this election was stolen enables them to move in because this is a dimension of free will and our free will has been severely transgressed. Whenever we need support, we will find one of them at our elbow helping out now.
Blessings to all of you!

US massacres civilians in Fallujah
By Joseph Kay
10 November 2004
The world may never know exactly how many Iraqis are being murdered or maimed in Fallujah. The Pentagon does not bother to count its victims and has imposed a regime of strict censorship, abetted by the self-enforcement of the corporate media. However, from the few reports coming out of the besieged city, it is absolutely clear that the basic purpose of the US campaign is to reduce it to rubble, killing and terrorizing as many inhabitants as possible.
Residential buildings, hospitals and mosques have all been bombed, and American troops are engaging in a house-to-house search of whatever remains. Tens of thousands of civilians remain in Fallujah, a medium-sized city near Baghdad that is normally home to 300,000 people.
A New York Times reporter embedded with US troops described the onslaught: Just before the marines began to push south into Falluja, the American bombardment intensified, and heavy artillery could be heard pounding positions in or near the city every few minutes. An entire apartment complex was ground to rubble. A train station was obliterated in a hail of 2,000-pound bombs. All electrical power in the city was cut off about 5 p.m.
The account passes over without comment the destruction of an apartment complex and train stationboth civilian structures.
For the thousands of civilians who remain in Fallujah, there is nowhere to hide from the American blitzkreig. They risk being buried alive by staying in their homes during the unending bombing raids, and if they venture outside they face almost certain death at the hands of American troops and snipers, who have fought their way into the city center.
According to Quil Lawrence, a BBC correspondent embedded with troops in Fallujah, There must be many [Iraqi] casualties considering the amount of gunfire Ive seen. The Americans launch about 500 rounds to the insurgents one, pelleting the insurgent area.
Aside from the American and British journalists accompanying the invading troops, there are only a handful of Iraqi journalists reporting on the fighting from inside the city. According to Al Jazeera, one of these journalists reported that shortly after the invasion began, US planes bombed a government health clinic that had been treating wounded insurgents and civilians in the center of Fallujah, killing both patients and staff.
Bakr al-Dulaimi told Al Jazeera that the bombings targeted everything in the city including the hospital, houses and cars. Al Dulaimi said the hospitals staff, doctors and patients have all fallen victim to the assault.
According to Al Jazeera, Residents said smoke was rising from the whole city as it shook to constant explosions. Civilians were huddled in their homes and there was no word on casualties...An AFP [Agence France-Presse] reporter in Jolan [a district of Fallujah] said one building in every 10 had been flattened. As US-led troops closed in on the neighborhood overnight, at least four 2,000 pound (900-kilogram) bombs were dropped on the citys northwest.
The network quoted Muhammad Abbud, who said he was forced to watch his nine-year-old son Ghaith bleed to death because the family could not take him to the hospital while bombs continued to fall on the city and gunfire poured into their neighborhood from US tanks and planes.
My son got shrapnel in his stomach when our house was hit at dawn, but we couldnt take him for treatment, said Abbud, a schoolteacher. We buried him in the garden because it was too dangerous to go out.
On Monday, the US took control of Fallujahs main hospital outside the city center in order to prevent doctors there from reporting on the level of civilian casualties. Sami al-Jumaili, a doctor at the hospital who managed to escape arrest by American troops, told Reuters that there were very few medical supplies and clinics open to treat the injured.
There is not a single surgeon in Fallujah, Al Jumaili said. We had one ambulance hit by US fire and a doctor wounded. There are scores of injured civilians in their homes whom we cant reach. A 13-year-old child just died in my hands.
Patients in the hospital were handcuffed and dragged out of their rooms for examination by troops. The US puppet, Prime Minister Allawi, has reportedly said that forces entering the hospital had captured four foreigners and killed 38 persons.
The International Committee for the Red Cross issued a statement saying that it was deeply concerned about reports that the injured cannot receive adequate medical care in Fallujah.
No one is being permitted to leave the city as the US military carries out the slaughter. A ring of US and British soldiers has been set up around the city. US Colonel Michael Formica told the Associated Press that this was necessary to prevent any insurgents from escaping dressed in civilian clothing.
My concern now is only one: not to allow the enemy to escape, he said. I do not want these guys to get out of here. I want them killed or captured as they flee.
The US actions in Fallujah are not only a moral outrage, they are a direct violation of international law, which prohibits indiscriminate attacks on civilian centers. According to Additional Protocol 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, Parties to the conflict shall at all times distinguish between the civilian population and combatants and between civilian objects and military objectives and accordingly shall direct their operations only against military objectives.
The Geneva Conventions were adopted in the aftermath of the atrocities committed by the Nazis in occupied Europe, wholesale attacks on civilian populations like the razing of the Warsaw Ghetto and the wiping out of the Czech village of Lidice. Now Washington is reviving the very methods that the world formally repudiated 55 years ago.
The assault on Fallujah is the first shot in what will be a series of attacks on Iraqi cities resisting occupation by insurgents, including Ramadi, Samarra and sections of Baghdad. The extraordinary level of violence employed in Fallujah is meant not only to physically destroy whatever opposition exists in the city, but also to terrorize the entire Iraqi population.
The Christian Science Monitor quotes a retired general with connections to the Pentagon as noting, This is being done for not only its effect on Fallujah, but for its demonstration effects...on other places resembling Fallujah. The use of violence for the purpose of intimidation and spreading terror is also a violation of international law.
Fallujah has been targeted first because it has been a center of Iraqi resistance to American occupation since the invasion last March. The killing of four American contract mercenaries in the city last April was used as a pretext for a US invasion, an operation that was aborted in the face of stiff resistance and an international outcry.
When it comes to retribution, however, the American military and political elite never forget. Operation Phantom Furythe grotesque name given to the invasionis revenge against the city for daring to oppose the will of the American occupation.
Washingtons pretensedutifully parroted by the US mediathat these actions are being taken to ensure democracy and allow for peaceful elections in January is an absurdity. If any further confirmation of this was necessary, it was provided by Allawi, who declared a 60-day period of emergency rule preceding the planned vote, as well as round-the-clock curfews in Fallujah and Ramadi, and a nighttime curfew in Baghdad.
The declaration of martial law was intended not only to provide the illusion of Iraqi authorization for the massive violence unleashed by the Pentagon against Fallujah, but also to give US occupation authorities and their Iraqi stooges a free hand in rounding up and purging political dissidents.
These actions are being carried out in the face of enormous opposition from the vast majority of the Iraqi population, an opposition that the attack on Fallujah will only intensify.
In spite of attempts by the Pentagon and the US political establishment to pretend that Iraqis are in control of the operation, the Iraqi forces that have been cobbled together are quickly dwindling in the face of mass desertions. According to media reports, upwards of 500 of the Iraqi troopsout of a total of 2,000 mobilized for the operationdisappeared before it began. A senior officer in the Iraqi police abandoned his post after learning of the plans for the invasion of Fallujah, presumably in order to inform the resistance.
The Association of Muslim Scholars, a group of leading Sunni clerics, denounced the invasion, appealing to all those who live with a conscience around the world to oppose the massacres and elimination war in Fallujah. The group called for a boycott of the January elections, saying that any such elections would be held over the corpses of those killed in Fallujah and the blood of the wounded.
Falluja a 'Big Disaster,' Aid Needed - Red Crescent (Nov 12)
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Aid agencies called on U.S. forces and the Iraqi government to allow them to deliver food, medicine and water to Falluja on Friday and said four days of intense fighting had turned the city into a "big disaster." The Iraqi Red Crescent Society, which receives support from foreign agencies including the Red Cross and UNICEF, said it had asked U.S. forces and Iraq's interim government to let them deliver relief goods to Falluja and establish medics there. But it said it had received no reply. (...) "There's no water. People are drinking dirty water. Children are dying. People are eating flour because there's no proper food," he told aid workers in Habbaniya, which has become a refugee camp, with around 2,000 families sheltering there. Ubadi said many families taking refuge in Habbaniya and other villages nearby were suffering from diarrhea and malnutrition and needed medicine as well as basic necessities such as lentils, sugar, bread, tea and candles. US media and liberal establishment: accomplices in the assault on Fallujah [9 November 2004]
A murderous operation is under way in Fallujah and the entire media and political establishment in the US is an accomplice in the crime. The unfolding massacre in the Iraqi city has failed to elicit an outcry, or even significant questioning of the assault, from these circles. No editorialist at a major newspaper or television news commentator has even hinted at moral qualms over the American onslaught. Not one columnist at the New York Times or Washington Post thinks Fallujah worth mentioning. Last weeks Democratic Party presidential hopeful hasnt a word to say. This universal complicity is the symptom of a terminal malaise. The upper echelons of American society are hopelessly corrupted and morally decayed.Even as thousands of marines poured into Fallujah in an attempt to eradicate the Iraqi resistance fighters, American commentators blandly spoke of the action as the most natural and uncontroversial of events. Here is a city, surrounded and cut off, whose male population between the ages of 15 and 50 faces being put to the sword by the US military, and no one in the media can stir himself to raise an objection. The deliberate demolition of a major urban center by a great power is unlike anything since World War II. The phrases used by the mediawarplanes and tanks are softening the defenses; the city of 300,000 is being cleansed of insurgentsare meant to conceal from the American public the true character of the assault: a homicidal operation aimed at destroying a major source of opposition to the colonialist US occupation and its puppet regime. US troops begin slaughter in Fallujah [9 November 2004]
US Troops Reportedly Gassing Fallujah
FALLUJAH, November 10 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - US troops are reportedly using chemical weapons and poisonous gas in its large-scale offensive on the Iraqi resistance bastion of Fallujah, a grim reminder of Saddam Husseins alleged gassing of the Kurds in 1988.
The US occupation troops are gassing resistance fighters and confronting them with internationally-banned chemical weapons, resistance sources told Al-Quds Press Wednesday, November 10.
The fatal weapons led to the deaths of tens of innocent civilians, whose bodies litter sidewalks and streets, they added.
They use chemical weapons out of despair and helplessness in the face of the steadfast and fierce resistance put up by Fallujah people, who drove US troops out of several districts, hoisting proudly Iraqi flags on them. Resistance has also managed to destroy and set fire to a large number of US tanks and vehicles.
The US troops have sprayed chemical and nerve gases on resistance fighters, turning them hysteric in a heartbreaking scene, an Iraqi doctor, who requested anonymity, told Al-Quds Press.
Some Fallujah residents have been further burnt beyond treatment by poisonous gases, added resistance fighters, who took part in Golan battles, northwest of Fallujah.
In August last year, the United States admitted (http://www.islamonline.net/English/News/2003-08/10/article10.shtml) dropping the internationally-banned incendiary weapon of napalm on Iraq, despite earlier denials by the Pentagon that the horrible weapon had not been used in the three-week invasion of Iraq.
After the offensive on Iraq ended on April 9 last year, Iraqis began to complain about (http://www.islamonline.net/English/News/2003-04/29/article08.shtml) unexploded cluster bombs that still litter their cities.
The sources said that the media blackout, the banning of Al-Jazeera satellite channel and subjective embedded journalists played well into the hands of the US military.
Therefore, US troops opted for using internationally banned weapons to soften the praiseworthy resistance of Fallujah people.
More and more, the US military edits and censors reports sent by embedded journalists to their respective newspapers and news agencies, the sources added.
Iraqi Defense Minister Hazem Al-Shaalan had said Tuesday, November 9, would be decisive.
Al-Shaalan declaration meant nothing but the use of chemical weapons and poisonous gases to down Fallujah fighters, observers told Al-Quds Press.
The reported gassing stands as a grim reminder of Saddam Hussein's alleged gassing of the Kurdish community in the northern city of Halbja in 1988.
While the West insisted that Saddam was the one behind the heinous attack, the ousted president pointed fingers at the then Iranian regime.
History Repeats Itself in Fallujah (April 21, 2004)
(...) Many of the reported 700 dead in Fallujah are women and children (doctors also report unaccounted deaths, those buried by trapped families within their gardens and compounds) with a further estimated 1500 injured, the town sealed and the injured unable to reach the main hospitals. Makeshift clinics have been set up, but doctors delivering emergency medical aid have been turned back, one reportedly shot by US forces. Reminiscent of Palestine: the sick cannot reach hospitals with harrowing stories also of pregnant women giving birth without medical help. One in severe distress in the ninth month of pregnancy was turned home and her baby born dead. The reported burnt bodies of those trying to flee Fallujahs tragedy, some little more than ash and barely recognizable bones. Human Rights Watch quoted refugees as describing, streets littered with bodies, adding, curiously, that they were not sure yet whether there had been any human rights violation. Collective punishment per se is a human rights violation. CLIP
IMAGINE HOW MUCH WORST IT CERTAINLY IS RIGHT NOW...
A Thousand Fallujahs
By Pepe Escobar
11 November 2004
"The bombs being dropped on Fallujah don't contain explosives, depleted uranium or anything harmful - they contain laughing gas - that would, of course, explain [Pentagon chief Donald] Rumsfeld's misplaced optimism about not killing civilians in Fallujah. Also, being a 'civilian' is a relative thing in a country occupied by Americans. You're only a civilian if you're on their side. If you translate for them, or serve them food in the Green Zone, or wipe their floors - you're an innocent civilian. Just about everyone else is an insurgent, unless they can get a job as a 'civilian'."
- Riverbend, an Iraqi civilian girl, author of the blog Baghdad Burning
Once again the US has been caught in a giant spider's web. Fallujah now is a network: it's Baghdad, Ramadi, Samarra, Latifiyah, Kirkuk, Mosul. Streets on fire, everywhere: Hundreds, thousands of Fallujahs - the Mesopotamian echo of a thousand Vietnams. The Iraqi resistance has even regained control of a few Baghdad neighborhoods.
Baghdad residents say there are practically no US troops around, even as regular explosions can be heard all over the city. Baghdad sources confirm to Asia Times Online that the mujahideen now control parts of the southern suburb of ad-Durha, as well as Hur Rajab, Abu Ghraib, al-Abidi, as-Suwayrah, Salman Bak, Latifiyah and Yusufiyah - all in the Greater Baghdad area. This would be the first time since the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, that the resistance has been able to control these neighborhoods.
Massive US military might is useless against a mosque network in full gear. In a major development not reported by US corporate media, for the first time different factions of the resistance have released a joint statement, signed among others by Ansar as-Sunnah, al-Jaysh al-Islami, al-Jaysh as-Siri (known as the Secret Army), ar-Rayat as-Sawda (known as the Black Banners), the Lions of the Two Rivers, the Abu Baqr as-Siddiq Brigades, and crucially al-Tawhid wal-Jihad (Unity and Holy War) - the movement allegedly controlled by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The statement is being relayed all over the Sunni triangle through a network of mosques. The message is clear: the resistance is united.
The Mobile Mujahideen
Fallujah civilians have told families and friends in Baghdad that the US bombing has been worse than Baghdad suffered in March 2003.
The Fallujah resistance for its part seems to have made the crucial tactical decision of clearing two main roads - called Nisan 7 and Tharthar Street - thus drawing the Americans to a battle in the center of town. Baghdad sources close to the resistance say that now the Americans seem to be positioned exactly where the mujahideen want them. This is leading the resistance to insist they - and not the Americans, according to the current Pentagon spin - now control 70% of the city.
There are at least 120 mosques in Fallujah. A consensus is emerging that almost half of them have been smashed by air strikes and shelling by US tanks - something that will haunt the United States for ages. The mosques stopped broadcasting the five daily calls for prayer, but Fadhil Badrani, an Iraqi reporter for BBC World Service in Arabic and one of the very few media witnesses in Fallujah, writes that "every time a big bomb lands nearby, the cry rises from the minarets: 'Allahu Akbar' [God is Great]".
Badrani also disputes the Pentagon spin: "It is misleading to say the US controls 70% of the city because the fighters are constantly on the move. They go from street to street, attacking the army in some places, letting them through elsewhere so that they can attack them later. They say they are fighting not just for Fallujah, but for all Iraq." The mujahideen tactics are a rotating web - Ho Chi Minh's and Che Guevara's tactics applied to urban warfare by the desert: snipers on rooftops, snipers escaping on bicycles, mortar fire from behind abandoned houses, rocket-propelled-grenade attacks on tanks, Bradleys being ambushed, barrages of as many as 200 rockets, instant dispersal, "invisible" regrouping.
Iraq's borders with Syria and Jordan, all highways except a secondary road leading to the borders, plus Baghdad's airport, all remain closed. Baghdad in theory has become an island sealed off from the Sunni triangle - but not for the resistance, which keeps slipping inside. Hundreds of Iraqis are stuck on the Syrian border trying to go back home.
Riverbend, the Iraqi girl blogger quoted above, writes of "rumors that there are currently 100 cars ready to detonate in Mosul, being driven by suicide bombers looking for American convoys. So what happens when Mosul turns into another Fallujah? Will they also bomb it to the ground? I heard a report where they mentioned that Zarqawi 'had probably escaped from Fallujah' ... so where is he now? Mosul?"
He could well be in Ramadi, where hundreds of heavily armed mujahideen now control the city center - with no US troops in sight.
The Pentagon is pulling out all stops to "liberate" the people of Fallujah. According to residents, the city is now littered with thousands of cluster bombs. In an explosive accusation - and not substantiated - an Iraqi doctor who requested anonymity has told al-Quds Press that "the US occupation troops are gassing resistance fighters and confronting them with internationally banned chemical weapons". The Washington Post has confirmed that US troops are firing white-phosphorus rounds that create a screen of fire impervious to water.
Dr Muhammad Ismail, a member of the governing board of Fallujah's general hospital "captured" by the Americans at the outset of Operation Phantom Fury, has called all Iraqi doctors for urgent help. Ismail told Iraqi and Arab press that the number of wounded civilians is growing exponentially - and medical supplies are almost non-existent. He confirmed that US troops had arrested many members of the hospital's medical staff and had sealed the storage of medical supplies.
The wounded in Fallujah are in essence left to die. There is not a single surgeon in town. And practically no doctors as well, as the Pentagon decided to bomb both the al-Hadar Hospital and the Zayid Mobile Hospital. So far, the International Committee of the Red Cross has reacted with thunderous apathy.
The Sunni Revolution
When a few snipers are capable of holding scores of marines for a day in Fallujah - an eerie replay of the second part of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket - and when eight of 10 US divisions are bogged down by a few thousand Iraqis with Kalashnikovs and grenade launchers, the fact is the US does not control anything in Sunni Iraq. It does not control towns, cities, roads, and it barely controls the Green Zone, the American fortress in Baghdad that is the ultimate symbol of the occupation.
In 1999, the Russians bombed and destroyed Grozny, the Chechen capital, a city of originally 400,000 people. Five years later, Chechen guerrillas are still trapping Russian troops in a living hell there. The same scenario will be replayed in Fallujah - a city of originally 300,000 people. All this destruction - which any self-respecting international lawyer can argue is a war crime - for the Bush administration to send a brutal message: either you're with us or we'll smash you to pieces.
The Iraqi resistance does not care if thousands of mujahideen are smashed to pieces: it is actually gearing up for a major strategic victory. The strategy is twofold: half of the Fallujah resistance stayed behind, ready to die like martyrs, increasing the already boiling-point hatred of Americans in Iraq and the Middle East and boosting their urban support. The other half left before Phantom Fury and is already setting fires in Baghdad, Tikrit, Ramadi, Baquba, Balad, Kirkuk, Mosul and even Shi'ite Karbala.
They may be decimated little by little. But the fact is Sunni Iraqis are more than ever aware they are excluded from the Bush administration's "democratic" plans for Iraq. The only Sunni political party in interim premier Iyad Allawi's "government" is now out. And the powerful Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) - the foremost Sunni religious body - is now officially boycotting the January elections. There are unconfirmed reports that Sheikh Abdullah al-Janabi, the head of the mujahideen shura (council) in Fallujah and a very prominent AMS member, died when his mosque, Saad ibn Abi Wakkas, was bombed.
The Sunni Iraqi resistance is now configuring itself as a full-fledged revolution. According to sources in Baghdad, the leaders of the resistance believe there's no other way for them to expel the American invaders and subsequently be restored to power - especially because if elections are held in January, the Shi'ites are certain to win. Contemplating the dogs of civil war barking in the distance, no wonder Baghdad's al-Zaman newspaper is so somber: "Iraq will remain a sleeping volcano, even if the state of emergency is extended forever."
Satan hides in a hospital
By Pepe Escobar
Nov 11, 2004
Everything one needed to know about the true, unspinnable foreign policy of the second George W Bush administration is represented by the "capture" of the first strategic target in the assault on Fallujah: the general hospital, on the left bank of the Euphrates, now totally cut off from the city. According to the Bush administration world view, this is the house where Satan lives.
Bush-installed interim Iraqi Prime Minster Iyad Allawi announced with a smile of victory that he personally ordered the capture of the hospital. So maybe it was not the Pentagon: it was an unelected politician asking a foreign occupation army to attack a hospital in his own country and preventing doctors and ambulances from entering a city under siege.
The assault, dubbed Operation Phantom Fury, perversely started on Laylat e-Qadr, the most important and holy night of the year for the Islamic world.
In terms of the information war, the hospital was indeed the most strategic of targets. During the first siege of Fallujah in April, doctors told independent media the real story about the suffering of civilian victims. So this time the Pentagon took no chances: no gory, disturbing photos of the elderly, women and children - the thousands unable to leave Fallujah in advance of this week's offensive, the civilian victims of the relentless bombing.
But this did not prevent the world from seeing doctors and patients at the hospital handcuffed to the floor - as if they were terrorists. Hospital director Dr Salih al-Issawi told Agence France-Presse that the Americans blocked him and other doctors from going to the center of Fallujah to help another clinic in distress; he also said an ambulance that tried to leave the hospital was shot at by the Americans - just like in April, when all ambulances were targeted. The Geneva Convention is explicit: in a war situation, hospitals and ambulances are neutral.
The Pentagon does not do "collateral damage" body counts. But as its relationship with the people of Fallujah now consists of a non-stop barrage of heavy metal, the Pentagon is certainly in a much better position than Fallujah's doctors to estimate the amount of civilian victims of its own bombing.
The marines are not only occupying a hospital; they even turned it into a military position, as they were using positions around it to attack the resistance.
The Pentagon's key primary target in Fallujah has been information: doctors in hospitals, telephone lines that people use to tell the world about the civilians' plight. Most of the world is interpreting Fallujah through embedded, Pentagon-censored reporters and Arab television. The Pentagon line is American "heroes" on the way to "liberate" the people of Fallujah. Iraqis, Arabs, 1.3 billion Muslims, the majority of European public opinion and decent Americans won't be fooled - again.
Asia Times Online sources close to the resistance say the talk in the streets of Baghdad is that the bulk of the estimated 2,500 mujahideen in Fallujah have already left to Baghdad, Ramadi, Samarra, Haditha, Khaldiya, and even Mosul in the north. Even before the assault on Fallujah, there were more than 100 resistance attacks a day all over the country. The main story playing in the Arab world in the past 24 hours is that of Mohammed Abboud - who saw his nine-year-old son bleed to death of shrapnel wounds when his house in Fallujah was hit because he could not venture out to go to a hospital. Abboud had to bury his son in his own garden.
Terrified Fallujans calling Baghdad tell of A-10 jets raining cluster bombs on the city's streets. Iraqi (very) black humor qualifies unexploded cluster bombs as the Iraqi version of Toys "R" Us: children get injured or killed because they think cluster bombs are toys. Everyone is talking of "scores of bodies" in streets destroyed by US bombing. There is no power, no water, shops are closed, food is scarce and practically no medical supplies remain, according to Dr Sami al-Jumaili, speaking to al-Jazeera. No more clinics are open throughout the city - and there is no possible way to estimate how many civilians are dead, blown up, burned or injured, although al-Jumaili tells of "scores of injured civilians". A brand-new clinic funded by a Saudi Islamic relief non-governmental agency was bombed by the Americans during the weekend, as well as a medical dispensary in the city center: this was apparently the last place where anybody could get any medical attention.
Fadhil Badrani, a reporter for the British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) World Service in Arabic, is one of the very few journalists inside Fallujah. He writes that "a lot of the mosques have also been bombed. For the first time in Fallujah, a city of 150 mosques, I did not hear a single call to prayer this morning. I broke my Ramadan fast yesterday with the last of our food - two potatoes and two tomatoes. The tomatoes were rotten because we have no electricity to run the fridge. My neighbors - a woman and her children - came to see me yesterday. They asked me to tell the world what is happening here. I look at the devastation around me and ask - why?"

Crushing Fallujah Will Not End the Iraq War
Likely to Prove as Disappointing to US as the Capture of Saddam
By PATRICK COCKBURN
November 9, 2004
The belligerent trumpetings of the US Marines bode ill for Fallujah. Sgt Major Carlton W Kent, the senior enlisted marine in Iraq, told troops that the battle would be no different from Iwo Jima. In an analogy the Pentagon may not relish, he recalled the Tet offensive in Vietnam in 1968 and added: "This is another Hue city."
American voters last week never seemed to take on board the extent of the US military failure in Iraq. The rebel control of Fallujah, half an hour's drive from Baghdad, was the most evident symbol of this. It was as if a British government in London had been forced to watch as an enemy force occupied Reading for six months.
The US army ceded control of much of western Iraq during the Sunni uprising last April. Its failure to recover fully from this setback underlines the extent to which the US as a military power has proved itself much weaker than the rest of the world had assumed before the invasion of Iraq last year.
There is no doubt that the US can recapture Fallujah, if only by blowing most of it up. But this is unlikely to have much of an effect on the guerrilla war in central and northern Iraq which continues to escalate. It is still unclear how far the rebels will stand and fight against the massed firepower of the marines and the US air force. They know they are far more effective in launching pin-prick attacks with roadside bombs and suicide bombers.
The recapture of Fallujah is likely to be as disappointing in terms of ending the resistance as was the capture of Saddam Hussein last December or the hand-over of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government at the end of June. Each event was billed as a success which would tip the balance towards the US. Instead the fighting got bloodier and more widespread.
There should be no mystery about why this is happening. All countries object to being occupied. Foreign invasions provoke nationalist resistance. This has happened with extraordinary speed in Iraq because of the ineptitude of the US civil and military commanders, but in the long term it would have happened anyway.
The US in Iraq has always behaved as if the resistance was fomented by foreign powers or adherents of Saddam Hussein. A lesson of the ground war last year was that few Iraqis were prepared to get killed for their old leader. Earlier this year I asked American helicopter pilots operating from a base near Fallujah whom they thought they were fighting. They said firmly that they were at war with "FFs" and "FRLs". These turned out to be Foreign Fighters and Former Regime Loyalists. One of the pilots added nervously that there seemed to be a third somewhat shadowy group "who want us to go home".
The US and the British are trying to seize Fallujah and the central Euphrates cities . These may have been the original heartlands of the rebellion, but today there are guerrilla attacks in every Sunni region in Iraq. US and interim government control of Baghdad is limited.
One of the strangest justifications for the attack on Fallujah is that it will allow an election to take place. This would only be true if the Sunni rebellion was a mirage and was entirely the work of FFs and FRLs oppressing a local population yearning to break free. A much more likely result of an increase in the fighting is a boycott of the election by the Sunnis. Even if they do vote then there is no reason to suppose that the guerrillas will stop fighting any more than the IRA laid down its arms despite numerous elections in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s.
The election will take place in January and voting will be heavy because Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the Shia religious leader, wants the Shia to show at the polls that they are 60 per cent of the population. The Kurds, who total another 20 per cent, will also take part. But Sistani has made clear ever since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein that he is against the occupation and has steadfastly refused to meet American officials. The Sunni, another 20 per cent of the population, have shown that they are strong enough to destabilise Iraq just as long as they want to. (The Kurds, with a similar proportion of the population, were able to destabilise Iraq for almost half a century.)
It is worth remembering that the elections are taking place largely because of armed resistance. Until guerrilla war started in the summer of last year US officials in Baghdad were speaking airily of an American occupation going on for years. It was only as the military situation deteriorated by the week that the US suddenly decided to appoint an interim government and hold elections. Many Iraqis say quietly that the only way to get concessions from the Americans is to shoot at them.
The French failed to hold Algeria against a nationalist revolt despite fielding an army of half a million. With similar numbers the US failed in Vietnam. With a much smaller army in Iraq, it will fail again. As in Algeria and Vietnam, the war in Iraq will only cease when an end to the occupation is in sight.

VICTORY FOR THE PEOPLE OF URUGUAY (Forwarded by "Meria Heller" firstname.lastname@example.org">)
You may have had to turn to page A48 to find it in your US newspaper, but October 31st marked an historic day for the victory of democracy and people's movements for social and economic justice in Latin America. In Uruguay, a leftist coalition, the Frente Amplio, won the presidency with their candidate Tabaré Vazquez, who shares a vision for justice in Latin American with Argentina's Kirchner, Venezuela's Chávez, and Brazil's Lula da Silva. In the same election, more than 60% of the Uruguayan people supported an amendment adding water as a human right to the Constitution and setting the basis for its exclusive public, participatory and sustainable management. Recent history has seen peoples movementsfrom Brazil to Uruguay to Venezuelabuilding enough power and energy to take back power in their national governments. May we continue to learn from and be inspired by their stories of resistance, resilience and victory! Former SOA Watch media coordinator Matthew Smucker was in Uruguay the night of the elections. Letter from Peter Coyote on Black Box Voting
Nov 09 2004 22:49:01
There is a bumper sticker I saw months ago that sums up the current state of affairs in our country regarding what is the biggest news story you'll never see on the General Media reported. It said "IF YOUR NOT OUTRAGED, YOUR NOT PAYING ATTENTION".
On Friday I received a phone call from a good friend who works at CBS--I've known her for years and she is a Producer for some of the news programs, one well known one in particular. She tipped me off that the news media is in a "lock-down" and that there is to be no TV coverage of the real problems with voting on Nov. 2nd. She said similar "lock-down orders" had come down last year after the invasion of Iraq, but this is far worse--far scarier. She said the majority of their journalists at CBS and elsewhere in NYC are pretty horrified--every one is worried about their jobs and retribution Dan Rather style or worse. My source said they've also been forbidden to talk about it even on their own time but she was pissed and her journalistic and moral integrity as what she considers to be a gov't watchdog requires her to speak out, while be it covert and she therefore asked me to "spread" the word... She said at this point the only way that the "real news" was going to be if the people started talking about it and made a big enough stink about it to our elected officials, the FEC, and "noise" to the international media, that our own media won't have any choice but to cover it. (Yes, this is really happening in the good ole' supposed "democratic" free press of the US of A). The only place you'll see this talked about right now is on the internet and on AirAmericaRadio.
Everyone--this is serious....I can't emphasize it any more than saying if there was ever a time to speak up and take action it is NOW. If you are feeling sick to your stomach (like me) about the possibility of 4 more years under Bush and the future of our country, and yet you feel helpless, here's your opportunity to take action. Imagine if you saw a loved one drowning--what do you do? Well, our country's democracy is drowning and she needs us. In an email I sent you last night, I used the F-word--FRAUD and mentioned to you that I felt strongly that there is a lot of mounting evidence that this election was not clean. I say that not only out of a result of my observations while out in the field as a poll watcher in the key battleground state of Ohio, I say it with the knowledge and information of reports that have been circulating around the country in various voting precincts involving irregularities and problems with the voting machines and numbers not matching up with the exit polls or actual numbers of registered voters in various precincts. I've been busy researching this issue and compiling for you below some details of these reports and where you can get more info:
To believe that Bush won the election, you must also believe:
1- That the exit polls were WRONG...(remember--they have been used for over a decade and considered reliable)
2- That Zogby's 5pm election day calls for Kerry winning OH, FL were WRONG. He was within a less than 1/2 % point margin of error in his 2000 final poll and previous polls for other elections.
3- That Harris Poll last minute polling for Kerry was WRONG. They were also within a 1/2% point margin of error in their 2000 final poll.
4- The Incumbent Rule
I (that undecideds primarily break at the end for the challenger)was WRONG.
5- The 50% Rule was WRONG (that an incumbent doesn't do better than his final polling)
6- The Approval Rating Rule was WRONG (that an incumbent with less than 50% approval will most likely lose the election)
7- That Journalist Greg Palast was WRONG when he said that even before the election, 1 million votes were stolen from Kerry. He was the ONLY reporter to break the fact that 90,000 Florida blacks were disnfranchised in 2000.
8- That it was just a COINCIDENCE that the exit polls were CORRECT where there WAS a PAPER TRAIL and INCORRECT (+5% for Bush) where there was NO PAPER TRAIL.
9- That the surge in new young voters had NO positive effect for Kerry, even though it was the largest number of youth voters 18-29 ever and a huge jump from 2000 and they were over 55% in favor of Kerry. ">"> 10- That Bush BEAT 99 to 1 mathematical odds in winning the election.
11- That Kerry did WORSE than Gore against an opponent who LOST the support of SCORES of Republican newspapers who were for Bush in 2000.
12- That Bush did better than an 18 national poll average which showed him tied with Kerry at 47. In other words, Bush got 80% of the undecided vote to end up with a 51-48 majority--when ALL professional pollsters agree that the undecided vote ALWAYS goes to the challenger.
13- That Voting machines made by Republicans with no paper trail and with no software publication, which have been proven by thousands of computer scientists to be vulnerable in scores of ways, were NOT tampered with in this election.
Some Examples: (There are many more, but I won't list them all here--this is to give you an idea)
- The City of Gahanna in Ohio discovered a discrepancy that gave 4,000 votes to George Bush. After media scrutiny, city officials have admitted to an electronic "glitch" that caused the problem.
- In Broward County, FL, errors in software code caused a referendum on gambling to be completely overturned. The error caused totals to count backwards after reaching a ceiling of 32,500 votes. The problem existed in the 2002 election as well however the issue was never resolved by the manufacturer of the electronic voting machine.
- In North Carolina, a Craven County district logged 11,283 more votes than voters and actually overturned the results of a regional race.

The Voice of the White House
November 7, 2004:
Many manifestations of pathological glee here in the Monkey Palace these days. We learn that Bush has cut down on his medication because he is euphoric over the election. He claims, and has done so in my presence, that God had given him a complete mandate [51 percent and a lot of that outright stolen by the Rove people] to change the political and moral face of America! Rove is behind all of this, telling everyone that God did indeed demand a complete restructuring of the grossly immoral American lifestyle. Homosexuality is to be made illegal [a new Federal law suggested by Delay and firmly endorsed by Rove] a form of Creationism to be taught in all schools, a modified draft, [mostly of technicians], military action against Iran and Syria, a strong message sent to both North Korea, the PRC and Russia to keep out of American business or suffer serious consequences, utter destruction of Iraqi cities that harbor any terrorists, regardless of the civilian casualties [Nits make lice, as Rove told me when I mentioned the possibility of large casualties, to include women and children] US to get political control over the Ukraine and other Russian or former Russian areas, the securing of oil areas in Iran and the subsequent cutting off of exports to China [whom Rove loathes] and Japan with all oil being shipped either to the US or England. France, Germany and several other countries to be starved of oil for their lack of support for Bush, a board to be set up to control vile and degrading pornography in the films coming out of Hollywood and encouragement to produce more Mel Gibson-style religious films, the prohibition of any American citizen to make any investments or bank deposits outside the United States and the sequestering of any such funds in countries under treaty with us, resurrection of the old sedition laws to prevent any more criticism of government or what is amounting to the state religion, the overturn of Rove v. Wade and a host of environmental acts that Bushs business friends claim are restricting their businesses, a strong encouragement to permit open and free immigration by Mexicans [already 13 million here as of two weeks ago] so they can supply American business cheap labor and replace some of the grunt jobs that even India wont perform, laws to permit off shoring American jobs by business friends to improve their profit margins, investigation of legal possibilities to permit Bush to run again [i.e., lifting the two-term mandate] and the calculated marginalization of the Democrat party and a planned strategy to oust Democrats as state governors. Another planned assault on Democrats in Congress is being worked up even as I write. Rove has told me, and others, that this is to be a one-party state and if he achieves this, it will be his crowning glory. This ought to be enough for now. Am sending off the list of patrons of the male whore house and hope you have the guts to publish them. And I ought to tell you that sainted Fat Karl has some very bad things in his own background. Always suspect a man who accuses everyone of sexual deviancy and proclaims themselves to be a paragon of virtue. More on this really ugly subject later when I am able to make Xeroxes of the relevant files [kept in a safe well away from the Monkey Palace].
The New Republican Reality: No Policy is Too Right-Wing (Nov 8)
Conservative pipedreams are suddenly part of America's mainstream. - Where should the United States invade next? Iran, Syria, or Cuba? Will George Bush merely slash taxes on the rich even further in his second term, or will he have the courage to abolish income tax altogether? Will gay marriage simply be outlawed state by state, or will a much-threatened constitutional amendment come into being? CLIP

Powell's Dangerous Kowtow to China
by Ted Galen Carpenter
November 4, 2004
Ted Galen Carpenter, vice president for defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute, is the author or editor of 16 books on international affairs.
Secretary of State Colin Powell astonished observers in both East Asia and the United States last week with extraordinarily candid comments on the Taiwan issue. His statements moved U.S. policy closer than ever before to Beijing's position that Taiwan must reunify with the mainland -- an especially surprising step coming from a conservative Republican administration.
Powell offered even more startlingly pro-Beijing comments in an interview with Hong Kong's Phoenix Television. He stressed that Washington had made it clear to all parties "that the United States does not support independence for Taiwan. It would be inconsistent with our One China Policy." He then made that point even more explicit: "There is only one China. Taiwan is not independent. It does not enjoy sovereignty as a nation." Lest anyone still miss the point, he added, "Independence movements or those who speak out for independence movements in Taiwan will find no support from the United States."
Predictably, the People's Republic of China is quite pleased with Powell's rejection of any possible outcome other than reunification. Just as predictably, the Taiwanese government regards his comments as a betrayal.
It is breathtaking how far the Bush administration has moved from its early stance on the Taiwan issue. During the 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush and his advisers criticized the Clinton administration for being too favorable to mainland China's position. Then, in a television interview on April 25, 2001, President Bush appeared to discard the nuances and caveats about protecting Taiwan that previous administrations had adopted. When asked by ABC News reporter Charles Gibson if the United States had an obligation to defend Taiwan, the president replied, "Yes, we do, and the Chinese must understand that." Would the United States respond "with the full force of the American military?" Gibson pressed. "Whatever it took to help Taiwan defend herself," Bush replied. A few weeks after that statement, Bush approved the largest arms sales package to Taiwan since his father's controversial sale of F-16 fighters in 1992.
It wasn't just the firmness of the commitment to defend Taiwan that marked the administration's policy, however. In marked contrast to the attitude of the Clinton administration, "stopover" visits by Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian and other officials were welcomed. Such stopovers often included public appearances and meetings with Washington's apparent blessing, even as Beijing seethed. At one point in 2002, Taiwan's defense minister met "informally" with Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz during a security conference put on by a think tank in Florida. That was the highest-level meeting between U.S. and Taiwanese officials in more than two decades.
But then came a shift in the administration's attitude -- a change that presaged Powell's even more emphatic actions. A crucial episode occurred during a visit by Chinese premier Wen Jiabao in December 2003. With Wen at his side, President Bush stated that the United States opposed "any unilateral decision by either China or Taiwan to change the status quo." Making it clear that his warning was directed primarily against Taipei rather than Beijing, he added that "the comments and actions made by the leader of Taiwan indicate that he may be willing to make decisions unilaterally, to change the status quo, which we oppose."
What accounts for the dramatic change in the Bush administration's policy? It appears that the administration believes that the United States needs China's help on an array of important issues. The desire for Beijing's assistance against Islamic radical groups is one significant area. But the need for China's cooperation on the North Korean nuclear issue is probably the most important factor. U.S. leaders believe that China may be the only power that can induce Kim Jong Il's erratic regime to give up its quest for nuclear weapons. Washington knows that Beijing's help will not come for free, and that a change in U.S. policy on Taiwan appears to be the price that Chinese officials are demanding. The Bush administration apparently is ready to pay that price.
Washington's new, pro-Beijing tilt -- especially Powell's comments -- could lead to some unfortunate results. Not only will the U.S. attitude demoralize the Taiwanese, it also could send dangerous signals to the mainland. China has already deployed more than 600 missiles across the strait from Taiwan, and has engaged in saber rattling on more than a few occasions in recent years. Chinese officials may now believe that they have a green light from the United States to ratchet up the pressure on Taiwan for early talks on reunification.
That might not be so dangerous if the shift in U.S. policy included an elimination of the commitment to defend Taiwan from attack. But for all the recent changes in Washington's position, that ultimate move in the name of realpolitik has not been taken. The result is a muddled policy that creates the perfect environment for potentially lethal miscalculations. Powell's comments were morally dubious and strategically unwise.

THE DEMOCRATS OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WANT TO ROCK THE BOAT DESPITE THE WIDESPREAD EVIDENCE THIS ELECTION WAS STOLEN BY REPUBLICANS ACROSS THE BOARD
Internet Buzz on Vote Fraud is Dismissed
by Rick Klein, Boston Globe
November 10th, 2004
WASHINGTON -- As they ricochet around the country on the Internet, the details seem aligned to raise the eyebrows of suspicious Democrats.
President Bush recorded 4,258 votes to Senator John F. Kerry's 260 in one suburb of Columbus, Ohio -- where only 638 ballots were cast. Across Ohio, some 76,000 punch-card ballots did not register votes for president, and officials have only begun to comb through 155,428 provisional ballots.
In Holmes County, Florida, though nearly three-quarters of registered voters are Democrats, Bush wiped out Kerry, 6,410 to 1,810, in results that mirrored those in several other counties where optical-scan paper ballots were used. And in Florida's Broward County, after the first 32,000 absentee ballots were fed into the computer system, a software glitch caused additional ballots to be subtracted from vote totals, rather than added.
A week after Kerry conceded and Bush declared victory, those assertions and scores of others from New Mexico to North Carolina have kept alive fierce speculation that Bush's victory either wasn't real or wasn't as decisive as it seemed. With memories fresh from the 2000 irregularities, e-mails and Web postings accuse Republicans of stealing an election.
Much of the traffic is little more than Internet-fueled conspiracy theories, and none of the vote-counting problems and anomalies that have emerged are sufficiently widespread to have affected the election's ultimate result.
Kerry campaign officials and a range of election-law specialists agree that while machines made errors and long lines in Democratic precincts kept many voters away, there's no realistic chance that Kerry actually beat Bush.
''No one would be more interested than me in finding out that we really won, but that ain't the case," said Jack Corrigan, a veteran Kerry adviser who led the Democrats' team of 3,600 attorneys who fanned out across the country on Election Day to address voting irregularities.
''I get why people are frustrated, but they did not steal this election," Corrigan said. ''There were a few problems here and there in the election. But unlike 2000, there is no doubt that they actually got more votes than we did, and they got them in the states that mattered."
Still, with reports swirling on the Internet, six Democratic members of Congress have asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate. Leading academics have joined the fray as well, saying that the integrity and future of the nation's voting system demand a vetting of all claims.
''The kind of thing that has to happen is a full-scale investigation," said Troy Duster, a New York University professor who is president of the American Sociological Association. ''It sounds like a paranoid fantasy, but I think the data suggests that even if Bush won, he didn't win by the kind of margins that are out there. We have a crisis here of potential legitimacy with all the stuff going on on the Web, and the way to deal with this is to do the research."
Most of the focus has been on results in Ohio and Florida, since if either of those states had gone for Kerry instead of Bush, the Massachusetts senator would be president-elect. Early exit polls in both states indicated that Kerry was track to win, and in each state voting and counting irregularities in numerous places have been reported. ''Fraud took place in the 2004 election," declares the team at BlackBoxVoting.org, one popular website that is compiling reports of election problems.
''Kerry won. Here are the facts," reads the headline on a widely circulated article written by the author of a scathing book on the Bush family.
Another site suggests Kerry is refusing to contest the election because fellow members of the Yale secret society Skull and Bones forbade him to do so.
After one e-mailer erroneously suggested that Kerry's brother, Cameron, was compiling reports of voting problems, Cameron Kerry's e-mail inbox was inundated with hundreds of messages, received at the pace of several per minute through yesterday. He sent out a stock response saying ''we are not ignoring" the reports, asking that they be forwarded to the Democratic National Committee instead of his e-mail address at his Boston law firm.
Though Corrigan said all allegations will be investigated by the Democratic legal team, he added that it has become clear that 2004 was no repeat of 2000. That year, an abbreviated Florida recount resulted in a 537-vote margin of victory for Bush, and many Democrats believe a full and impartial recount would have handed the election to Democrat Al Gore.
This year, the race wasn't nearly as close in the states that hung in the balance. According to preliminary results from last week's election, Bush carried Florida by 380,000 votes, and Ohio by 136,000. Corrigan said Democrats won't push for hand recounts this year, because they wouldn't change the results, a point backed by election specialists.
''I think it's safe to say that on the votes that were cast in Ohio, Bush won," said Dan Tokaji, a law professor at Ohio State University who is working with the ACLU to challenge Ohio's use of punch-card ballots. ''If the margin had been 36,000 rather than 136,000, we would have seen another post-election meltdown."
The apparent computer glitch that awarded Bush an extra 3,893 votes in Gahanna, Ohio, was quickly caught and won't be in the final certified numbers. The 76,000 punch cards across the state where no vote for president was recorded include ballots cast by people who chose not to vote for the top office, as well as those who mistakenly chose more than one candidate. That group, of course, includes voters who intended to support Bush as well as those who meant to support Kerry.
As a percentage of the total, the number of ballots recording no vote for president was actually lower than it's been in recent elections in the state, Corrigan noted. Democrats are making sure provisional ballots are counted, but almost all of those votes would have to be for Kerry to swing the election, and many are expected to be ruled invalid.
In Florida, the Democratic-leaning counties that went for Bush are in the culturally conservative Panhandle, where the president beat Gore in 2000 and where he made particularly intense appeals this year. The software error that started subtracting votes rather than adding them affected only a few ballot measures, and was caught and corrected.
Richard Hasen, an election law specialist at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, noted that with the election overseen by 13,000 different local jurisdictions -- many of which were employing new technologies on Election Day -- scattered problems were inevitable.
''I would be surprised if there wouldn't be glitches like this," Hasen said.
As for the exit polls, they remain subject to sampling errors and limitations in data gathering. The polls sponsored by a consortium of media companies had margins of error of roughly 3 percent, and in closely contested states shown to be leaning toward Kerry, narrow Bush wins were actually within the expected range. Florida's margin was larger than expected, but poll takers reported problems getting close enough to voting places to collect adequate samples, and said they feared they were not getting Bush voters to be as forthcoming with their choice as Kerry voters.
Heather Gerken, a professor at Harvard Law School, said the fact that this year's election went smoothly compared to 2000 shouldn't blind policy makers to problems still inherent in the system. Many jurisdictions continue to use outdated equipment, states are behind in compiling reliable voter lists, and elections are still run by partisan officials, she said.
''I have not yet seen anything that convinces me that the election was stolen, but I certainly think that we should treat these allegations seriously and do them justice," she said. ''There's clearly problems with the elections system. It's crucial to the health of this country that we have an election system that we can trust."

"The core of our American democracy is the right to vote. Implicit in that right is the notion that that vote be private, that vote be secure, and that vote be counted as it was intended when it was cast by the voter. And I think what we're encountering is a pivotal moment in our democracy where all of that is being called into question." (more at http://www.verifiedvoting.org/article.php?id=5021)

Subject: Vanunu Arrested Again
Date: 11 Nov 2004
Mordechai Vanunu was arrested this morning in his room at St. George's Cathedral in East Jerusalem, by a huge police force (about 30 armed officers). The pretext for his arrest: Vanunu violated the Draconian restrictions that were imposed on him when he was released from prison in April, by giving interviews to foreign media.
The attempt to silence Mordechai Vanunu on this of all days, is an attempt to bury Israel's secret nuclear arsenal together with Yasser Arafat. While the world media and attention are focused on the burial of the Palestinian leader, the Israeli government is attempting to disappear the nuclear whistleblower, whose only crime is revealing the terrible truth that Israel is trying to hide: weapons of mass destruction that are concealed from Israeli citizens and from the world.
Mordechai Vanunu is expected to be brought to court on Friday morning, November 12. His supporters will demonstrate outside the courthouse. Details will be sent out later today.

Vanunu under house arrest (Nov 12)
Soldiers snatch nuclear whistleblower from church sanctuary as Israel accuses him of passing on more secrets - Israel faced international protest last night after the nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was rearrested seven months after his release from an 18-year sentence. Some 30 heavily armed Israeli soldiers burst into the courtyard of St George's Cathedral in Jerusalem yesterday morning and took the 50-year-old from the hostel where he had been given sanctuary since he left prison. He was taken before a magistrate and ordered to be under house arrest at the hostel for seven days."This is a disgrace to Israeli democracy," Mr Vanunu shouted to journalists as he was led into court. "They want to punish me again, they cannot punish me twice. I suffered 18 years in prison, I have the right to be free." Last week, in an interview with the Guardian in Jerusalem, Mr Vanunu said he had no secrets to disclose and was talking to foreigners, in defiance of government restrictions, so that the authorities would see he had nothing to hide. He is also forbidden from leaving the country for at least a further five months."I don't know what is the best way to overcome this restriction," he said during an interview in the churchyard. "Is it by silence or is it by speaking? I decided it was by speaking. If I was silent they might keep me longer. If I speak, they can see I have no more secrets, all I am saying is expressing my views and also I am teaching them that they cannot silence anyone. "For 18 years I have been defending my right to freedom of speech, defending my right as a human being, that no one can tell me what to say or not to say. If they take away your right to speak, you are not a human being any more." CLIP
