The Empire of Darkness Series #21: The Bushgernaut

Hello everyone

Trying to conjure up is a nutshell-like title the overarching theme covered in any of my compilations is always a tough challenge as the amount of topics and information covered is becoming ever more staggering with each passing week. Not that I relish wading into this never-ending stream of dauntingly exasperating aggravation of our planet and humanity's condition, but as it happens, simply through skimming the material that comes my way as I try to live a normal life like everyone else, I keep discovering stuff that I simply cannot disregard in the hope that somehow it will take care of itself and that our planetary ship will keep on cruising ahead with all of us aboard trying to enjoy as peacefully - and responsibly - as possible a satisfying experience.

We are definitely coming into a karmic crunch-time as an incredible amount of issues clamoring for an overdue collective attention for our assessment and decision on a corrective course are cropping up like a surging tsunami now reaching everyone's lap.

As I was discussing with Mark Elsis who phoned me yesterday to invite me to join him and Meria next February 10 on the air for their excellent Earth News Hour, despite the accruing evidence that we are heading for oblivion, it is always important to remain aware that whatever happens here is ultimately designed to awaken us spiritually, that the universe despite the travails we go through and the tribulations we may experience is ultimately benevolent and that, in the end, the sooner we snap out of all our collective trances to make good on AndrŽ Malraux's visionary statement when he said that the 21st century will be spiritual or won't be, the sooner we will reach the shores of the new world we have been seeking throughout our incredibly long and tumultuous journey from Oneness to Oneness.

Once again I'm challenging you and putting you all to task by asking that you avail yourself of the information provided below and find within yourself the resolve and soul clarity necessary to not stumble on the pebbles of human misdirected creativity but find within yourself the Power to rise above the self-inflicted shackles of fear and lack of appreciation of your own true valor, and reach for the pinnacle of accomplishment, each in your own sphere of human activity and manifestation, to cocreate this world anew, as called for in the Earth Proclamation many of you vowed to uphold.

Love and Light WILL prevail!

"George W. Bush, his administration, the Republican controlled congress as well as the Republican Party itself, and most of the churches in America (including evangelical, Southern Baptist, Pentecostal and Roman Catholic), stand indicted—not by men—not by this writer—but by the very Holy Scriptures the religious-right and Mr. Bush profess to uphold. Weighed against the Bible, the Bush actions are not only morally corrupt—they are unchristian and unbiblical to the core. In this essay, the Bush agenda is weighed on the scale of God’s standards and it is found wanting."

"Considering how much access to information is at our fingertips and how totally ignorant most of us remain, we must be the most ignorant and deluded population of serfs in world history. In the past few days both Ted Turner and Robert Kennedy Jr specifically compared Bush to Hitler as have various members of the US Congress and millions of Americans on both the left and right done previously, yet Americans remain completely ignorant as to why this is not an analogy but a factual association."

- Robert Lederman -- Taken from "Bush and Auschwitz" below.

"From the military to local governments, from ostensibly civilian federal agencies to obscure counter-intelligence organizations, they're all on the make, creating interagency alliances, setting up new programs, expanding their powers, gearing up operations and/or creating "Big Brother" technologies to more effectively monitor civilians, chill dissent, and bring the war back home. Right now, nothing is closer to the heart of Homeland Security State officials (and to their budgetary plans) than that old standby of dictatorships and oppressive regimes worldwide, surveillance -- by and of the Homeland population. In fact, almost every day, new examples of ever-hopeful surveillance programs pop up."

"If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"

"Here's to the crazy ones...

The misfits, the rebels, the trouble makers,
The round pegs in the square holes,
The ones who see things differently.

They're not fond of rules,
and they have no respect for status quo.

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or villify them,
But the only thing you can't do is ignore them,
Because they change things,
They push the human race forward.

And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.

Because the people who are crazy enough
to think they can change the world,
are the ones who do..."

Our Velvet Revolution, speech by Doris 'Granny D' Haddock - now 95 years old! (January 17)
http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0117-31.htm
A growing number of Americans are beginning to identify with the pro-democracy activists whose courage opened much of the world to freedom in the final decades of the 20th Century. We remember and honor the poet revolutionary Vaclav Havel of Czechoslovakia, where Charter 77 rendered the flowers and songs of a velvet revolution more powerful than the guns of oppression. We remember the shipyard hero, Lech Walesa, of Poland. We remember those who stood non-violently in Russia, in Yugoslavia, in Tiananmen Square, in East and West Germany. It was their fearless living that ended the Cold War, not Reagan’s saber rattling. When people stand united with certain courage against oppression, they get their way. That is an axiom in the geometry of world history. To say we are oppressed in America sounds remarkably like the whining of spoiled children. We live such privileged lives compared to many in the world, it is true. We have our cars and our homes or apartments‚ most of us, and our television shows and our clean cities and glittering stores‚ cornucopias--and theaters and a thousand kinds of systems and conveniences and communication devices and all the rest that seem to work and serve us with well-maintained reliability. Living in the midst of such luxury, it is hard to imagine that one might not be free‚ that freedom might be an illusion, a fraud. (...) Look at me: I am still alive, and I am looking at you, and you are alive. This is our world as much as anyone else's. We who are old enough or wise enough to see the edges of life can understand that we have a choice between fear and joy, and between victimization and service. All elections and other indications to the contrary, happy days are here again when we but say they are. We do not turn our hearts away from injustice or suffering, indeed we mend them as best we can with our joyful engagement and our courageous non-cooperation with the forces of fear and death. And no one can take away our joy, for even our suffering for justice and brotherhood is joyful. This is our Velvet Revolution, American style. We resist what we must and what we can, but our victory is not in defense, but in a cultural offensive made irresistible by the power of love and courage, pulling our people together, and our own lives together, over time. We have tried this before in America. Things got in our way: drugs, wars, fears. We became parents. We became distracted. It is now time to get it right.

SPECIAL GREEN HOLOCAUST UPDATE

NOTE FROM JEAN: At first I though I would prepare another Green Holocaust compilation for you for the sole reason of making sure you all have under your eyes the following first article below - but I won't have time to prepare 3 compilations this week. So here it is in a nutshell in this Update. I cannot stress enough the need to read this first article below from Grist magazine. To me - and I read a LOT of stuff as you know - this is by far the worst, most depressing environmental news that came to my attention in the past several years. Judging from the feeble, reluctant actions taken worldwide to put a stop to runaway global warming, I'd say we have precious little time left to stop our global slide into massive species extinction. The consequences explained in this article of global warming are just mind-boggling. Just wrapping our minds around what it all means for sea life and eventually for all life on Earth once global oxygen depletion - briefly alluded to in this article - kicks in is heart-stopping. WE REALLY DO NEED HELP!!!...

Warming waters threaten seabirds and marine species of all sizes
http://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2005/01/25/schulman-seabirds/?source=weekly
The problem with cold-water phytoplankton is that they prefer cold water. When climate change makes their home waters too warm for comfort, the tiny plant organisms move north in search of cooler climes. As the minuscule photosynthesizers migrate, all of the little organisms that depend on them for food are out of luck, as are the small fish that depend on those small critters, as are the seabirds and other larger predators that eat the small fish -- well, you get the picture. And scientists say the cause-and-effect story is only getting grimmer. Audrey Schulman investigates the ripple effect that may carry a tidal wave of consequences -- this week on the Grist Magazine website.

Report warns of major climate catastrophe in as few as 10 years
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/01/24/climate.change.ap/
A task force of leading politicians, academics, and business leaders from around the world has quantified global warming's so-called "point of no return." And it's bloody soon! In as little as 10 years, says a report by the task force, the global average temperature could rise 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit from its pre-industrial level. At that point, the authors contend, the tipping point will have been reached and major droughts, sea-level rise, and widespread crop failures are all but certain. So far, global average temperature has risen about 1.4 degrees since 1750, meaning we've still got a couple of degrees before the threshold is reached. To help beat the clock, the report calls on all G8 nations to produce a quarter of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025 and double their expenditures on low-carbon energy technologies by 2010. "There is an ecological time bomb ticking away," said British Member of Parliament Stephen Byers, who co-chaired the task force with U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine). Neglecting Mother Earth (26 January 2005)
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2005/01/26/neglecting_mother_earth?mode=PF
Local insanity plus global inanity adds up to an embarrassing American moment. (...) At the same time, we receive yet more evidence how we blow smoke in the face of the world with our pollution and refuse to join the other 136 nations and regional economic groups that signed the international Kyoto agreement on global warming. The incivility at home and arrogance abroad makes for one ugly American. On environmental stewardship, it is easy to forget that in the 1970s, the United States led the world in cleaning up air pollution, said Marc Levy, associate director of Columbia University's Center for International Earth Science Information Network, one of the authors of the 2005 Environmental Sustainability Index. "Europe was way behind us," Levy said over the telephone yesterday. "Our big advance in the '70s was clear targets on air quality, with incentives and punishments, putting catalytic converters in cars and smokestack scrubbers in industrial plants. But we pretty much stopped there. In the past 10 years, Europe has passed us and we're 50 percent below most countries over there on average." Levy said that Europe has vaulted past us with far more strategic efforts to promote rail transportation, reduce coal burning, and recycling solid waste, all of which are stifled in the United States by special-interest lobbying that turns politicians into cowards and wrongfully convinces working-class workers that less pollution means less jobs. Measuring Our Ecological Footprint
http://www.gvnr.com/95/5.htm
(...) An Eco-Footprint compares the ecosystem services we use each year, with the biosphere's capacity to re-generate them. These are measured in global acres, the units of biologically productive area needed to produce the resources we consume, and to absorb our waste. It can be applied to governments, organisations and communities to assess their environmental impact. According to the Living Planet Report jointly published in 2004 by GFN and World Wide Fund for Nature, we get an average of 1.8 hectares per person - space that also needs to accommodate non-human species. This is the average budget available for sustainable living - using more implies ecological overload. The report also stated that the world average Eco-Footprint is 2.2 global hectares per person today, that is, 20 per cent more than what is available on the planet. In 2002, Hong Kong's Ecological Footprint was 4.3 global hectares per person or 2.4 times the world average. If the situation remains unchanged, we would need at least 100 times the existing land and sea area we have to support our current lifestyles. CLIP - More details at http://www.footprintnetwork.org/

A Warming Climate
http://www.truthout.org/docs_05/012905G.shtml
For the past four years members of the Bush administration have cast doubt on the scientific community's consensus on climate change. But even if they don't like the science, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, one of their closest allies in Iraq and elsewhere, has given the administration another, more realpolitik, reason to rejoin the climate change debate: "If America wants the rest of the world to be part of the agenda it has set, it must be part of their agenda, too," the prime minister said this week. Mr. Blair's speech came at an interesting moment, both for the administration's energy and climate change policies and for the administration's diplomatic agenda. In the next few weeks, the House will almost certainly vote once again on last year's energy bill, a mishmash of subsidies and tax breaks that finally proved too expensive even for a Republican Senate to stomach. After a House vote, there may be an attempt to trim the cost of the bill and add measures to make it acceptable to more senators - including the growing number of Republicans who have, sometimes behind the scenes, indicated an interest in climate change legislation. Indeed, any new discussion of energy policy could allow Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) to seek another vote on their climate change bill, which would establish a domestic "cap and trade" system for controlling the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. If domestic politics could prompt the president to look again at the subject, international politics certainly should. Administration officials assert that mending fences with Europe is a primary goal for this year; if so, the relaunching of a climate change policy - almost any climate change policy - would be widely interpreted as a sign of goodwill, as Mr. Blair made clear. Beyond the problematic Kyoto Protocol, there are ways for the United States to join the global discussion, not least by setting limits for domestic carbon emissions. CLIP

As temperatures rise, Antarctic wildlife on the edge of disaster (Dec 18, 2004)
http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/edit/archives/2004/12/18/2003215653
Even a small increase in sea temperatures could trigger a chain effect that would rapidly destroy a large percentage of marine life, a British scientist warns. Warmer temperatures in the Antarctic could threaten penguins, whales, seals and a host of smaller creatures, a marine biologist warns in a lecture to be given at Christmas. Lloyd Peck, of the British Antarctic Survey, argues that even a small rise in sea temperatures could have dramatic consequences."Antarctic animals -- in the sea especially -- are very sensitive to climate change and they are the early warning system for the loss of species on the planet. We should be watching for those because climate change is probably going to get rid of them before it gets rid of other species," he says."We know things are changing; it is going to be really unpleasant; we are going to lose things -- we just don't know how much," he said. (...) "If one of the key species in the system goes, then very quickly you'd lose a lot of the system. And that would affect penguins, seals and whales. The fishery areas around the Antarctic would be affected," he said." So the animals that everybody is interested in -- the furry ones with big eyes, the penguins, the whales -- there is potential for them to be affected very quickly by the loss of a few species in the Antarctic food chain," Peck said. The Antarctic continent is still cold. But the Antarctic peninsula, home to the British research bases, has warmed by up to 3 degrees Celsius in the last 50 years. CLIP

As Green as a Neocon (Jan. 25, 2005)
http://slate.msn.com/id/2112608/
Why Iraq hawks are driving Priuses - President Bush has a simple policy about energy: produce more of it. The former oilman has packed his administration with veterans of the oil and coal industries. And for most of the first Bush term, his energy policy and his foreign policy were joined at the hip. Since the Bush administration believed that controlling the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf was critically important to the American economy, the invasion of Iraq seemed to serve both the president's energy goals and his foreign policy ones. But a curious transformation is occurring in Washington, D.C., a split of foreign policy and energy policy: Many of the leading neoconservatives who pushed hard for the Iraq war are going green. James Woolsey, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and staunch backer of the Iraq war, now drives a 58-miles-per-gallon Toyota Prius and has two more hybrid vehicles on order. Frank Gaffney, the president of the Center for Security Policy and another neocon who championed the war, has been speaking regularly in Washington about fuel efficiency and plant-based bio-fuels. The alliance of hawks and environmentalists is new but not entirely surprising. The environmentalists are worried about global warming and air pollution. But Woolsey and Gaffney—both members of the Project for the New American Century, which began advocating military action against Saddam Hussein back in 1998—are going green for geopolitical reasons, not environmental ones. They seek to reduce the flow of American dollars to oil-rich Islamic theocracies, Saudi Arabia in particular. Petrodollars have made Saudi Arabia too rich a source of terrorist funding and Islamic radicals. Last month, Gaffney told a conference in Washington that America has become dependent on oil that is imported from countries that, "by and large, are hostile to us." This fact, he said, makes reducing oil imports "a national security imperative." CLIP

Water Shortages, Global Warming to Hit Grain Supply (27 January 2005)
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L27435356.htm
Stockholm - Water shortages and global warming will hit grain production and push up prices in the coming years, leading to unrest in countries unable to afford imports, the head of a leading think-tank said on Thursday. Shortages of water due to rising population, added to the effects of global warming, will hit wheat, rice and maize supply, pushing up prices and leaving poor countries with no means to meet growing demand for food. "Overpumping to supply the growing food needs of today almost guarantees a future reduction of food supply," said Lester Brown, head of the Washington based Earth Policy Institute. CLIP

An election to anoint an occupation (January 31, 2005) (MORE RELATED NEWS BELOW!)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1402277,00.html?gusrc=rss
Tony Blair and George Bush were quick to characterise yesterday's election as a triumph of democracy over terror. Bush declared it a "resounding success", while Blair asserted that "The force of freedom was felt throughout Iraq". And yet the election fell so completely short of accepted electoral standards that had it been held in, say, Zimbabwe or Syria, Britain and America would have been the first to denounce it. (...) The millions of Iraqis, as well as the UN electoral team and the Iraqi election commission staff, who did participate in the process despite the grave risk, deserve our respect. But it was a risk taken in vain. The election was illegitimate, and cannot resolve the rampant insecurity resulting from the occupation. The only way to stop the destruction of Iraq is to end the occupation and enfranchise the Sunnis, who are leading the resistance because they see the US as systematically excluding them from the role they deserve to play in Iraq. Indeed, this so-called election, with its national rather than provincial voting rolls, was designed to reduce Sunni representation and to anoint US-supported groups who will allow this occupation to continue. A high turnout does not change the fact that this is an illegitimate, occupier's election. Early in the occupation, the Bush administration recognised that a democratic Iraq would not countenance the strategic goals the war was fought for: controlling the oil reserves and establishing military bases to enable the political transformation the neocons envisage for the Middle East. Even as the US proclaimed its mission as introducing democracy to Iraq, they worked to make sure that the processes they put in place would produce leaders they had picked. The US obtained a carefully circumscribed UN involvement in order to provide the chosen leaders a measure of legitimacy. CLIP

New Report: Statisticians Refute 'Explanation' of Exit Poll (January 31, 2005)
http://uscountvotes.org/ucvAnalysis/US/USCountVotes_Re_Mitofsky-Edison.pdf
Background: After last November's presidential election, there were numerous reports of irregularities. Reported problems included:
- voting machine shortages
- ballots counted and recounted in secret
- lost, discarded, and improperly rejected registration forms and absentee ballots
- touch-screen machines that registered "Bush" when voters pressed "Kerry"
- precincts in which there were more votes recorded than registered voters
- precincts in which the reported participation rate was less than 10%
- high rates of "spoiled" ballots and under-votes in which no choice for president was recorded
- a sworn affidavit by a Florida computer programmer who claims he was hired to develop a
voting program with a "back door" mechanism to undetectably alter vote tallies
These problems arise in the context of election systems where un-auditable voting equipment cannot provide assurance that votes are counted as cast. The crucial question is whether these problems were part of a larger pattern. Were these issues collectively of sufficient magnitude to reverse the outcome of the election, or were they isolated incidents, procedurally disturbing but of little overall consequence? Under such circumstances we must rely on indirect evidence, such as exit polls, to ascertain the overall integrity of the official election results. CLIP

New Gaza Violence Strains De Facto Truce (Jan 31, 2005)
http://olympics.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=7490061
RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Palestinian militants shelled Jewish settlements on Monday after witnesses accused Israeli troops of killing a girl at a U.N.-run Gaza school, straining a de facto truce that has raised hopes for peace. The incidents punctured the relative calm that has settled over the Gaza Strip over the past two weeks, following new Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's efforts to coax gunmen into a cease-fire ahead of a planned Israeli pullout this summer. Abbas has won plaudits from Israel and the United States, chief patron of a peace "road map," but the White House urged him to disarm Palestinian militants as required by the plan. Abbas seeks to co-opt the armed factions, fearing a crackdown could cast him as an Israeli stooge in the eyes of Palestinian embittered by ongoing bloodshed. Ten-year-old Noran Deeb died in a playground at Rafah refugee camp, but a military spokeswoman said no Israeli forces were involved in any shooting in the area. Hamas and kindred militant group Islamic Jihad launched mortar bombs and makeshift rockets at the Gush Katif settlement bloc after the girl's death, causing no casualties. CLIP

War should be left behind us in the memories of history. The people of the world should practice it no more. Better results in peace could be realized if we were to reach out to our fellow man with understanding instead of aligning them in our rifle sights. Rhetoric and Reality Clash in Inaugural Address
http://www.fpif.org/commentary/2005/0501inaug2.html
The inspiring rhetoric of President George W. Bush's second inaugural address was perhaps the most sweeping testament to the American commitment to defend freedom and liberty worldwide since President John F. Kennedy's famous inaugural speech 44 years earlier.Unfortunately, this ignores the fact that the United States has long been the primary military, diplomatic, and economic supporter of the world's most repressive regimes the world, a pattern that has only been strengthened under the Bush administration. A look at the six family dictatorships of the Persian Gulf region propped up by American arms and advisers underscores the irony that the nation founded in one of the first republican revolutions against monarchial rule is now the primary supporter of the world's few remaining absolute monarchies.President Bush promised that "All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors." If that is actually the case, President Bush must immediately make it clear to all governments that oppress their own people: unless and until you respect human rights, including the right to choose your own government, the United States will immediately cease all economic and security assistance, withdraw American advisors to your police and military, block all transfers of American armaments and other implements of repression, and encourage other countries to do the same. Unfortunately, there are currently no signs that President Bush is prepared to do this or that either party in Congress is willing to pressure him to do so.Unless or until that time comes, President Bush's noble words at his inauguration can only be seen as self-serving hypocrisy of the worst kind. Walking Wounded (January 31, 2005)
http://amconmag.com/2005_01_31/article1.html
Old soldiers don't fade away - The observant will have noticed that we hear little from the troops in Iraq and see almost nothing of the wounded. Why, one might wonder, does not CNN put an enlisted Marine before a camera and, for 15 minutes without editing, let him say what he thinks? Is he not an adult and a citizen? Is he not engaged in important events on our behalf? Sound political reasons exist. Soldiers are a risk PR-wise, the wounded a liability. No one can tell what they might say, and conspicuous dismemberment is bad for recruiting. An enlisted man in front of a camera is dangerous. He could wreck the governmental spin apparatus in five minutes. It is better to keep soldiers discreetly out of sight. So we do not see much of the casualties, ours or theirs. Yet they are there, somewhere, with missing legs, blind, becoming accustomed to groping at things in their new darkness, learning to use the wheelchairs that will be theirs for 50 years. Some face worse fates than others. Quadriplegics will be warehoused in VA hospitals where nurses will turn them at intervals, like hamburgers, to prevent bedsores. Friends and relatives will soon forget them. Suicide will be a frequent thought. The less damaged will get around. CLIP

BUSH WANTS $9 MILLION AN HOUR FOR WAR
http://www.rightiswrong.com/leftout.php
When you hear that Bush is asking for $80 billion in additional money to prosecute the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq it is too much to comprehend in real terms. But when you realize the money he is talking about is $9 million an hour, 24 hours a day for 365 days, you can grasp the depths of the madness. I live in New York City. There was a subway fire that damaged a switching station knocking out an entire line that serves hundreds of thousands of people. It was estimated that it would take 3-5 years to get it back to full service. In this city home care attendants, who serve elderly and homebound people, are not paid a living wage. Politicians say that there is just not enough money to raise their wages. The majority of the people in this country realize that the war in Iraq is an enormous mistake. Thousands of Americans have been maimed and killed, that alone should be too high a price to pay for an immoral and illegal war. But when you factor in that it has already cost $280 billion, it staggers the mind and deadens the spirit. Most Americans are struggling just to make it from paycheck to paycheck. The cost of a college education is off the charts. More and more Americans are going without health insurance because they can't afford. It is a reality that seniors are choosing between life saving medication and food. But where are our elected officials. Neither Republicans nor Democrats have distinguished themselves in serving the needs of the vast majority of Americans. What a travesty! Millions of Americans work for less than $9 an hour, while George W. Bush and his cronies on both sides of the aisle will vote for you to support this insanity to the tune of $9 million an hour. Stop The War! End The Occupation! Bring The Troops Home!

CIA's 'Ghost Prisoners' Spark Rights Concerns (28 January 2005)

My Nightmare of Torture and Assault, by Briton Held in Guantanamo (30 January 2005)
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/legal/story.jsp?story=606033
One of the four Britons freed from Guantanamo Bay last week has alleged being tortured, nearly suffocated and repeatedly assaulted in American detention, The Independent on Sunday can reveal. In the first detailed account to emerge since their release, Moazzam Begg, 35, from Birmingham, has accused his US captors of threatening his family, killing fellow detainees, and interrogating him more than 250 times. His 25-page testimony was written in solitary confinement at Guantanamo Bay last year for an American tribunal hearing. It details, for the first time, why he visited Islamist training camps in Afghanistan, and describes the night in 2002 when he was captured in Pakistan by US agents. Mr Begg claims that while he was held by the Americans at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan in 2002, he was "dragged into an isolation room, my hands shackled from behind to my ankles, and a suffocating hood placed over my head. I was struck about the head several times, then left in that manner on the floor for several hours, only to be interrogated again." CLIP

ACLU Calls On Gonzales to Appoint Special Counsel on Torture Abuses (30 January 2005)
http://www.aclu.org/SafeandFree/SafeandFree.cfm?ID=17376&c=206
Full criminal investigation of civilian officials must be free of political pressure. WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today called upon senators to insist - prior to voting on the nomination of Alberto Gonzales as attorney general - that he commit to immediately appoint an outside special counsel to investigate and prosecute any criminal acts by civilians in the torture or abuse of detainees by the U.S. Government. "In America, no one is above the law, even those at the highest level of government," said Christopher Anders, an ACLU legislative counsel. "Senators should demand now that Gonzales show the American people that he is beholden not to the political sways of the White House, but to the interests of truth and justice, by committing to the immediate appointment of an outside special counsel to investigate any and all criminal conduct by civilians in the use of torture and abuse against prisoners." At his confirmation hearing, Gonzales failed to adequately answer inquiries from both sides of the aisle about the Bush Administration's policies on the torture and abuse of prisoners and detainees. Bringing It All Back Home: The Emergence of the Homeland Security State (31 Jan 2005)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/013105K.shtm
Part I: The Military Half - If you're reading this on the Internet, the FBI may be spying on you at this very moment. Under provisions of the USA Patriot Act, the Department of Justice has been collecting e-mail and IP (a computer's unique numeric identifier) addresses, without a warrant, using trap-and-trace surveillance devices ("pen-traps"). Now, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Justice's principle investigative arm, may be monitoring the web-surfing habits of Internet users -- also without a search warrant -- that is, spying on you with no probable cause whatsoever. In the wake of September 11, 2001, with the announcement of a potentially never-ending "war on terror" and in the name of "national security," the Bush administration embarked on a global campaign that left in its wake two war-ravaged states (with up to one hundred thousand civilian dead in just one of them); an offshore "archipelago of injustice" replete with "ghost jails" and a seemingly endless series of cases of torture, abuse, and the cold-blooded murder of prisoners. That was abroad. In the U.S.A., too, things have changed as America became "the Homeland" and an already powerful and bloated national security state developed a civilian corollary fed by fear-mongering, partisan politics, and an insatiable desire for governmental power, turf, and budget. A host of disturbing and mutually-reinforcing patterns have emerged in the resulting new Homeland Security State -- among them: a virtually unopposed increase in the intrusion of military, intelligence, and "security" agencies into the civilian sector of American society; federal abridgment of basic rights; denials of civil liberties on flimsy or previously illegal premises; warrant-less sneak-and-peak searches; the wholesale undermining of privacy safeguards (including government access to library circulation records, bank records, and records of internet activity); the greater empowerment of secret intelligence courts (like the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court) that threaten civil liberties; and heavy-handed federal and local law enforcement tactics designed to chill, squelch, or silence dissent. While it's true that most Americans have yet to feel the brunt of such policies, select groups, including Muslims, Arab immigrants, Arab-Americans, and anti-war protesters, have served as test subjects for a potential Homeland Security juggernaut that, if not stopped, will only expand. America: The New Heart of Darkness by John Kaminski
http://www.warfolly.vzz.net/newheartofdarkness.html
Our creature comforts have made silent cowards of us all. (...) The right to a fair trial is no longer guaranteed. You can be put in jail or executed for reasons that can be kept secret. And still, on the crumbling streets of America, most people go about their business as if nothing has happened. Sensible people, who in the deepening darkness of their own secret hearts must realize something has definitely happened, that something definitely will happen. Sensible people, suddenly afraid to speak what they really believe for fear their neighbors will overhear and tell someone with a gun and a uniform, or worse, an employer with an important contract who wants no employees who don't agree with the way things are. And then, they think, paralyzed by fear, who will feed the kids? Scared silence follows. Who would have thought that democracy would come to mean tyranny? OK, Orwell. And many other now unpopular voices, never heard in our manacled media. Who would have thought, when all was said and done, that America would turn out to be the chief threat to the survival of all life on this planet? But as the announcer always reminds us, this is why we play the game. You never know how it will turn out. CLIP

Bush tells CBC he's 'unfamiliar' with Voting Rights Act (January 27, 2005)

President George W. Bush met with the Congressional Black Caucus Wednesday for the first time as a group in nearly four years, but what CBC members said stood out the most was the president's declaration that he was "unfamiliar" with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant pieces of legislation passed in the history of the United States. At the conclusion of yesterday's 40-minute meeting, Bush - who attended along with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - was asked by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-2nd) whether he would support the re-authorization of a portion of the Voting Rights Act that must be approved every 25 years (It will come up for consideration next year). (...) According to the description on the Department of Justice's website, the Voting Rights Act is "generally considered the most successful piece of civil rights legislation ever adopted by the United States Congress."The bill guaranteed that African Americans and any other group would not be denied the right to vote, and put in place provisions to ensure that voting rights would not be trampled on by local and state officials. Researchers Who Rushed Into Print a Study of Iraqi Civilian Deaths Now Wonder Why It Was Ignored (27 January 2005)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_05/012905K.shtml
When more than 200,000 people died in a tsunami caused by an Asian earthquake in December, the immediate reaction in the United States was an outpouring of grief and philanthropy, prompted by extensive coverage in the news media. Two months earlier, the reaction in the United States to news of another large-scale human tragedy was much quieter. In late October, a study was published in The Lancet, a prestigious British medical journal, concluding that about 100,000 civilians had been killed in Iraq since it was invaded by a United States-led coalition in March 2003. On the eve of a contentious presidential election - fought in part over U.S. policy on Iraq - many American newspapers and television news programs ignored the study or buried reports about it far from the top headlines. Order 81 (21/01/05)
http://www.theecologist.co.uk/archive_article.html?article=487&category=86
Under the guise of helping get Iraq back on its feet, the US is setting out to totally re-engineer the country's traditional farming systems into a US-style corporate agribusiness. They've even created a new law - Order 81 - to make sure it happens. (...) So the Iraqi farmer may have been wowed with the promise of a bumper yield at the end of this year. But unlike before he can‚t save his seed for the next. A 10,000-year old tradition has been replaced at a stroke with a contract for hire. Iraqi farmers have been made vassals to American corporations. That they were baking bread for 9,500 years before America existed has no weight when it comes to deciding who owns Iraq's wheat. Yet for every farmer that stops growing his unique strain of saved seed the world loses another variety, one that might have been useful in times of disease or drought. In short, what America has done is not restructure Iraq's agriculture, but dismantle it. The people whose forefathers first mastered the domestication of wheat will now have to pay for the privilege of growing it for someone else. And with that the world's oldest farming heritage will become just another subsidiary link in the vast American supply chain.

Women told, 'Work in brothel, or else' (January 30, 2005)
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=42615
German law forces out-of-work females to take sex jobs or lose unemployment - A provision in the German welfare system is forcing out-of-work women to chose between taking jobs in the sex industry or losing their unemployment benefits. Once one of the most generous systems in Europe, Germany's unemployment program has been reformed to require those out of work to take jobs for which they are qualified, or lose benefits. In the case of women, females below the age of 55 who have been out of work for a year or more must take any available job offered. The full legalization of prostitution two years ago – with brothel owners now paying taxes and employee health insurance – has created an awkward situation at German job centers where employers can access the official government database of those seeking work, reports the London Telegraph. (...) "Now that prostitution is no longer considered by the law to be immoral, there is really nothing but the goodwill of the job centers to stop them from pushing women into jobs they don't want to do." Last year, the German federal government announced that it would be fining employers that failed to hire trainees – a measure to be applied to brothels as well as other employers. Brothels failing to hire one apprentice for every 15 employees will be fined for failing to promote the sex industry. Germany legalized prostitution in 2002 in the belief it would slow down the trafficking in women and reduce the role of organized crime in the profession. Instead, government is expanding the sex industry by guaranteeing a steady stream of new recruits, some willing and some not.

Auschwitz Slavery Financed Bush Family Fortune

By Richard Sanders, Editor, Press for Conversion!

Yes, it is true... thanks in large part to slaves at the Auschwitz concentation camp, the Bush family amassed a fortune that launched them into the oil business, politics, and eventually the White House.

A new 50-page Web Resource: "All in the Family: The apple does not fall far from the BUSH"
has just been posted online by the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT):

Yesterday (January 27, 2005) was the 60th anniversary of the Soviet army's liberation of Auschwitz. In the blitz of corporate media coverage around that great event, there seems to have been not a single mention whatsoever of how the Bush family fortune is linked to slave labour at that Nazi concentration camp. In fact, there has been precious little mention of this fact in the mainstream media, at any previous time.

The facts substantiating this history are very well documented in the U.S. National Archives. These documents are absolutely undeniable and they have been studied by various reputable researchers, historians and journalists. This is not a wild internet conspiracy theory, as some may try to claim.

The historic reality is that George Bush Sr's father, Prescott Bush, was a Wall Street banker whose job at the Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH) bank in New York City, was to coordinate the massive flow of American investments into Germany during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Bush was directly responsible for overseeing and personally managing these U.S. investments. The American investers included fascist-leaning multimillionaires, like Averell Harriman, the Rockefellers and others. Some of these bankers and industrialists supported the fascist American Liberty League, that plotted in the early 1930s to overthrow FDR in a coup that was thwarted by a Marine Corps General, named Smedley Butler, who blew the whistle when they tried to recruit him for the job. But, I digress, that is yet another fascinating piece of history, dismissed no doubt by many as yet another so called "conspiracy theory." You can read about that history in another issue of our magazine: http://coat.ncf.ca/fascistplot.)

Thanks to Prescott Bush and BBH, American investments were instrumental in supporting Hitler's rise to power. This American financing was incredibly useful in helping to build the Nazi Party. (BBH continues to exist to this day and it is still dabbling in politics, having reliably donated to George W. Bush's political campaigns.)

Prescott Bush was reputedly a swell guy, he just happened to focus his early career on coordinating U.S. investments in Nazism and Hitler. He worked hard at managing U.S. investments into the very German companies that built the Nazi war machine, like their notorious chemical/weapons monopoly, I.G. Farben.

Prescott is most closely linked to the slaves of Auschwitz through Fritz Thyssen. Thyssen was no bit player, he was the owner of Germany's industrial coal/steel empire that relied on the slaves at Auschwitz. Thysssen's financial support had been instrumental in launching Hitler and the Nazi Party into power. For instance, he financed the huge Nazi Party headquarters building and he rallied other Germany industrialists and bankers to support Hitler and the fledgling Nazi Party when it was just a fringe party. He later wrote a book called "I Paid Hitler."

The fact that the Bush family fortune is intricately linked with the Thyssen family fortune is significant. This fact, and the others mentioned here, should be part of the general public's common knowledge about the war. However, it seems that the corporate media does not care to report this history. Not only is the Bush family connection to Auschwitz ignored (or covered up), most of yesterday's corporate news coverage about Auschwitz did not even mention any of the profit-making corporations that used the slaves of Auschwitz. Many of the corporations that profited from the holocaust still exist. In fact, these companies are still considered to be among the powerhouses of the economies in western democracies. Perhaps then it is not surprising that the corporate media somehow neglects to mention the role that these corporations played in creating and sustaining the Nazi party and in profiting from their slave labour camps, like Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was conveniently (not just coincidentally) located right next to Europe's richest coal deposits. Prescott Bush, his U.S. clients, the Thyssen coal/steel monopoly and the I.G. Farben chemical/weapons cartel clearly understood the significance of Auschwitz's geographic location. So should we.

The world's biggest internet search engine, Google, has a "news" function that "continuously crawls" online news sources. It "presents information culled from approximately 4,500 news sources worldwide."
http://news.google.ca/intl/en_ca/about_google_news.html

A Google News search for "Prescott Bush" AND Auschwitz, did not yield even a single story, for yesterday or for any previous day. Try it yourself:
http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=%22prescott+bush%22+auschwitz&btnG=Search+News

Similarly, Google found no news references containing "Brown Brothers Harriman" AND Auschwitz:
http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Brown+Brothers+Harriman%22+AND+Auschwitz%22+&btnG=Search+News

So what if Bush laundered billions in Nazi loot after the war?
After the war, Bush kept working for the same multimillionaires who he had helped finance Hitler's rise to power. Prescott's new job was to coordinate the flow of all that money back from investments in Germany and into the pockets of that powerful network of American entrepreneurs. The Nazi project had been very lucrative for these businessmen and Bush was the right man to continue the whole dirty enterprise. So, Bush helped them to launder billions of dollars in Nazi loot back into America through the Union Banking Corporation. It was a dirty job, but somebody had to do it. Some will argue that if this hadn't been done by Prescott Bush, it would have been done by someone else. That's true. However, shouldn't the media at least provide this information to the public? Wouldn't people be interested to learn about this history?

In 1942, under The Trading with the Enemy Act, the Roosevelt government confiscated all of the assets of Thyssen's front companies in America, including the Union Banking Corp (UBC), and various other Bush-linked corporations. (However, after the war, in 1951, one and a half million dollars worth of UBC shares were returned to Bush. This cash helped Prescott become a Senator.)

Neither is there a single news story found by Google News that mentions "Union Banking" AND Auschwitz:
http://news.google.ca/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Union+Banking%22+auschwitz&btnG=Search+News

The Plot thickens

Because people might have interpreted their profitable investments in Nazism as an ever-so-slightly treasonous operation, Bush and his paymasters used the intrepid Dulles brothers to cover their tracks. After the war, Allen and John Foster Dulles (who had been Wall Street's top lawyers -- with Sullivan and Cromwell -- representing Nazi commercial interests in America during WWII) ever-so-conveniently became the top dogs in the CIA and U.S. State Department, respectively. From there, they masterminded many a coup and regime change as well as a whole series of mass murders spanning the globe. To do this work, they often relied upon the very same Nazi geniuses who they had helped rescue from prosecution in Germany after the war. Whoever said crime doesn't pay never heard about the Dulles boys, or Prescott Bush.

George W. Bush

Some will argue that George W. Bush comes from a prestigious and hard-working American family. They will deny all of the historical facts about the family's links to Nazism. They will get away with this denial of reality because they, like most others (thanks largely to the corporate media's neglect/cover up) do not know anything about this history. If they are forced to acknowledge the reality of this history, they will likely say, yes it's true that George W. did inherit a family legacy of profiting from Auschwitz and, yes, his grandfather laundered billions in Nazi loot, but everybody makes some little mistakes in their life. It's better to forgive and forget. They will likely also argue that we shouldn't hold poor George W. accountable for the sins of his father or his father's father. Therefore, the general public, they might argue, doesn't need to know about any of this.

The world is keenly watching the current, self-proclaimed leader of the Free World. George W. promotes himself as the leading fighter for truth, freedom, democracy and liberty around the world. However, he has many skeletons in his closet. One of those skeletons is that of Prescott Bush, one of the world's greatest war profiteers. George W. has trillions of dollars worth of the latest weapons of mass destruction at his disposal. And, he has a million soldiers awaiting his orders. He intends to continue using these resources in a multi-generational war to protect American investments around the world.

Some people do not want the truth to come out about his family's close ties to building Nazism and profiting from slave labour camps like Auschwitz. If you don't want to know anything about this history, that's fine. No one should force you to learn about it.

However, if you want to learn more, you CAN!

C.I.A. Said to Rebuff Congress on Nazi Files (30 January 2005)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/013005B.shtml
WASHINGTON - The Central Intelligence Agency is refusing to provide hundreds of thousands of pages of documents sought by a government working group under a 1998 law that requires full disclosure of classified records related to Nazi war criminals, say Congressional officials from both parties. Under the law, the C.I.A. has already provided more than 1.2 million pages of documents, the vast majority of them from the archives of its World War II predecessor, the Office of Strategic Services. Many documents have been declassified, and some made public last year showed a closer relationship between the United States government and Nazi war criminals than had previously been understood, including the C.I.A.'s recruitment of war criminal suspects or Nazi collaborators. For nearly three years, the C.I.A. has interpreted the 1998 law narrowly and rebuffed requests for additional records, say Congressional officials and some members of the working group, who also contend that that stance seems to violate the law. (...) "I think that the C.I.A. has defied the law, and in so doing has also trivialized the Holocaust, thumbed its nose at the survivors of the Holocaust and also at Americans who gave their lives in the effort to defeat the Nazis in World War II," said Elizabeth Holtzman, a former congresswoman from New York and a member of the group. "We have bent over backward; we have given them every opportunity to comply."(...) Historians who have studied the documents made public so far have said that at least five associates of the Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann, the architect of Hitler's campaign to exterminate Jews, had worked for the C.I.A. Eichmann, who was arrested by the Allies in 1945, escaped and fled to Argentina. He was captured by Israeli agents in 1960, tried and hanged. The records also indicate that the C.I.A. tried to recruit two dozen more war criminals or Nazi collaborators. CLIP

Bush and Auschwitz

by Robert Lederman

January 27th, 2005

[What the International Herald Tribune article below leaves out is the most important info there is on this issue, without which the article means little: Bush's family were actively financing the Nazis from the 1920's right through 1942. The Rockefeller's Standard Oil of NJ [today known as EXXON] was half owner of IG Farben, the German chemical conglomerate that built and operated Auschwitz and 40 other slave labor death camps. Auschwitz was a model for the type of corporate efficiency that people like Rockefeller would have liked to apply to a slave-like labor force worldwide and that globalization is now gradually bringing about in an incremental, and therefore almost invisible, way. Following WWII the top stock holders and lawyers of IG Farben created the CIA, after importing thousands of Nazi intelligence officials into the US, and then became its earliest directors.

The pharmaceutical and chemical companies that IG Farben was broken up into after WWII are today's biggest Bush supporters and they continue to carry out a worldwide program of eugenics via the pharmaceutical drugging of almost 70% of Americans, dangerous vaccines, invented diseases like AIDS, and the creation of thousands of new viruses via DNA technology.

The human genome project is headquartered at the actual building complex where both the American and Nazi eugenics programs were started, Cold Springs Harbor, NY. When Bush says that Americans living longer is the cause of the social security problem, he's subtly hinting at what their real "solution" to this problem is going to be, what I termed in an essay written in 2000, The Profitability of An Early Death. Bush's efforts to eliminate class action lawsuits against drug and vaccine makers is one step in preparation for a planned mass kill-off of "useless eaters." Hitler used inefficient concentration camps while today's eugenicists will use other far more efficient means to reduce unwanted population, often without their victims ever leaving their homes. The Bush family connection to Standard Oil/IG Farben and to eugenics goes back more than 100 years to Samuel Bush and continues through every subsequent generation.

As just one example of this continuity, GW Bush's father, former President Bush, was both CIA director and director of the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company before becoming US President. As UN ambassador he publicly lauded Rockefeller and others efforts to revive a world-wide eugenics style population reduction of minorities and repeatedly endorsed, a New World Order, word for word taken from Hitler's own speeches. The Bush administration is nothing other than the recreation of the IG Farben oil, chemical, munitions and pharmaceutical corporate identity as an official government - unfortunately our government.

Condolezza Rice, a former EXXON executive, is now our Secretary of State. No US corporation was more inextricably tied up with the Nazis than was Standard Oil/ EXXON. Eugenicists like Bush understand propaganda better than anyone. They like to place African Americans, Latinos and other ethnic minorities in key positions of seeming authority so as to misdirect and confound their critics. That's why in racist right wing America we will have a Latino Attorney General, a Black Secretary of State (and soon a Black Chief Justice, Clarence Thomas) and a Jewish director of Homeland Security. These are all fronts who decide nothing. The emphasis the Bush administration seems to place on being advised by so-called neo-con Jews is also a ploy meant to misdirect critics on both the left and right into believing it is Jews if not the Jewish people as a whole who are somehow directing the War in Iraq and all the terrible costs that come with it.

There are thousands of mainstream articles and books that contain the background info on the Bush/Rockefeller-Nazi connection, among them Trading With The Enemy by Charles Higham, The Secret War Against the Jews by Loftus and Arrons and American Dynasty by Kevin Phillips. Below the Herald Tribune article are brief AP quotes on the Bush-Nazi connection. If you do a google.com search on Bush AND Nazi you will find tens of thousands of documented references that prove this is true and the ultimate proof these articles are citing is in the US National Archives. This is no conspiracy theory. The US Congress seized the Bush families assets in 1942 under the Trading With the Enemy Act, as fronts for the Nazis. The reason that Europeans mock Bush's absurd pronouncements about "freedom" "democracy" and "human rights" is that they know this history in great detail while most Americans remain completely in the dark about it, thanks to our corporate media. The media always treats comparisons of Bush and Rockefeller operatives like Giuliani to Nazis as if they are an ignorant analogy or name calling. It's not an analogy at all. The exact same corporations that put the Nazis in power have maintained an unbroken agenda of domination culminating today in the second term of GW Bush. In NYC they put Giuliani in office where he spent eight years carrying out the Manhattan Institute/CIA experimental plans for a 21st Century urban police state complete with mass dosings of IG Farben nerve gas as a response to a fake "epidemic," West Nile Virus. Like AIDS, WNV was a formerly unknown disease which was created/discovered by Rockefeller University scientists in Africa during Hitler's reign and was later brought to NYC where they experimented with it from the 1950's on.

A recurrent theme in American literature and film since 1946 has been Nazis continuing their work by creating a Fourth Reich via genetic science, political manipulation, pharmaceuticals, weapons technology and mass brainwashing of the public. Usually dealt with as fiction - if not science fiction - this thematic undercurrent in hundreds of American films and novels is expressing a very real agenda being carried out right in front of us on a daily basis. The reason Bush won't go to Auschwitz is that he cannot bear to return to the scene of his own families biggest crime to date. In his second term, GW hopes to outdo his predecessors. The reason he looks so confident and even smirks as he talks about the latest US casualties (if you saw his press conference on Wed 1/26/05 you know what I mean) is that he's laughing at us, the American public. Considering how much access to information is at our fingertips and how totally ignorant most of us remain, we must be the most ignorant and deluded population of serfs in world history. In the past few days both Ted Turner and Robert Kennedy Jr specifically compared Bush to Hitler as have various members of the US Congress and millions of Americans on both the left and right done previously, yet Americans remain completely ignorant as to why this is not an analogy but a factual association. The NY media covered my Giuliani-as-Hitler art for years yet never once dared to explain what was behind it. If we are going to honor the memory of Auschwitz, isn't it time to once and for all open up the books on what the death camps were just the most graphic expression of? Isn't it time to stop pretending that this is past history and not in fact, today's news as it happens? -Robert Lederman]

The Voice of the White House

January 27, 2005: "I have never in all my years in politics, most of which were spent in and around Washington, seen so much stunning stupidity and rank arrogance as I now see in the White House. Bush, who has insulated himself from the public with high walls and iron discipline and listens only to sycophants and toadies, honestly believes that he has a mandateˇnot from the American people which he does not, but from Almighty God himself! I have actually heard him say this and in my professional opinion, he is becoming very, very dangerous. Bush believes that whatever he does, he does in the name of and with the permission of God and that to question, thwart or criticize him is blasphemy.

I realize this sounds like some kind of a rant but if you worked here on a daily basis and saw for yourself the sorry state that American leadership has fallen into, you would feel like outraged rants as well. Bush wants to invade Iran and Syria. Bush wants to have the Iraqi elections over on Sunday and has ordered that whatever the sorry and predictable outcome there, it be declared a "great victory for American-style liberty." That bloody civil war is actually now raging there is of no interest to him. Once he personally declares victory, which is coming, then the troops are to be pulled out in spite of strong warnings from senior military officers in the field that utter and bloody chaos will reign. These troops will be "refreshed" and prepared for future wars.

Mark my words, George and the Likudists are iron bound to attack Israel's enemies in that area with dreadful consequences, both short and long term. No one dares to voice any objections and as I have said before, the hothouse atmosphere around the Monkey Palace is sickening in its sycophancy combined with fanaticism. Rove wants to obliterate the Democrats, down to the last one, and replace them with a weird fascistic one party system and the others are sniffing about like curious and hungry weasels trying to find a way to build up their pathetic little empires in the shadow of the Second Son of God (as the saner, and more concerned, of us here call him.) with no regards for the obvious day of wrath that is clearly coming. We have become the Nazis of the Twenty First century but our repulsive, weak and suckass press is terrified to comment on it.

In Germany, for example, irate and anti-Bush citizens (which, according to my figures here are about 75% of the population there) are going around their parks, sticking small American flags in piles of dog shit! And I could cite more disgusting examples of rampant anti-American feelings all over the world but children might read some of this and so I will refrain. As I have said before, it is not God Bless America now but God Save America."

There Is No Tomorrow

By Bill Moyers

The Star Tribune

30 January 2005

One of the biggest changes in politics in my lifetime is that the delusional is no longer marginal. It has come in from the fringe, to sit in the seat of power in the Oval Office and in Congress. For the first time in our history, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington.

Theology asserts propositions that cannot be proven true; ideologues hold stoutly to a worldview despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. When ideology and theology couple, their offspring are not always bad but they are always blind. And there is the danger: voters and politicians alike, oblivious to the facts.

Remember James Watt, President Ronald Reagan's first secretary of the interior? My favorite online environmental journal, the ever-engaging Grist, reminded us recently of how James Watt told the U.S. Congress that protecting natural resources was unimportant in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. In public testimony he said, "after the last tree is felled, Christ will come back."

Beltway elites snickered. The press corps didn't know what he was talking about. But James Watt was serious. So were his compatriots out across the country. They are the people who believe the Bible is literally true - one-third of the American electorate, if a recent Gallup poll is accurate. In this past election several million good and decent citizens went to the polls believing in the rapture index.

That's right - the rapture index. Google it and you will find that the best-selling books in America today are the 12 volumes of the "Left Behind" series written by the Christian fundamentalist and religious-right warrior Timothy LaHaye. These true believers subscribe to a fantastical theology concocted in the 19th century by a couple of immigrant preachers who took disparate passages from the Bible and wove them into a narrative that has captivated the imagination of millions of Americans.

Its outline is rather simple, if bizarre (the British writer George Monbiot recently did a brilliant dissection of it and I am indebted to him for adding to my own understanding): Once Israel has occupied the rest of its "biblical lands," legions of the antichrist will attack it, triggering a final showdown in the valley of Armageddon.

As the Jews who have not been converted are burned, the messiah will return for the rapture. True believers will be lifted out of their clothes and transported to Heaven, where, seated next to the right hand of God, they will watch their political and religious opponents suffer plagues of boils, sores, locusts and frogs during the several years of tribulation that follow.

I'm not making this up. Like Monbiot, I've read the literature. I've reported on these people, following some of them from Texas to the West Bank. They are sincere, serious and polite as they tell you they feel called to help bring the rapture on as fulfillment of biblical prophecy. That's why they have declared solidarity with Israel and the Jewish settlements and backed up their support with money and volunteers. It's why the invasion of Iraq for them was a warm-up act, predicted in the Book of Revelations where four angels "which are bound in the great river Euphrates will be released to slay the third part of man." A war with Islam in the Middle East is not something to be feared but welcomed - an essential conflagration on the road to redemption. The last time I Googled it, the rapture index stood at 144 - just one point below the critical threshold when the whole thing will blow, the son of God will return, the righteous will enter Heaven and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire.

So what does this mean for public policy and the environment? Go to Grist to read a remarkable work of reporting by the journalist Glenn Scherer - "The Road to Environmental Apocalypse." Read it and you will see how millions of Christian fundamentalists may believe that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed - even hastened - as a sign of the coming apocalypse.

As Grist makes clear, we're not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. Nearly half the U.S. Congress before the recent election - 231 legislators in total and more since the election - are backed by the religious right.

Forty-five senators and 186 members of the 108th Congress earned 80 to 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian right advocacy groups. They include Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Assistant Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Conference Chair Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Policy Chair Jon Kyl of Arizona, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Roy Blunt. The only Democrat to score 100 percent with the Christian coalition was Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia, who recently quoted from the biblical book of Amos on the Senate floor: "The days will come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land." He seemed to be relishing the thought.

And why not? There's a constituency for it. A 2002 Time-CNN poll found that 59 percent of Americans believe that the prophecies found in the book of Revelations are going to come true. Nearly one-quarter think the Bible predicted the 9/11 attacks. Drive across the country with your radio tuned to the more than 1,600 Christian radio stations, or in the motel turn on some of the 250 Christian TV stations, and you can hear some of this end-time gospel. And you will come to understand why people under the spell of such potent prophecies cannot be expected, as Grist puts it, "to worry about the environment. Why care about the earth, when the droughts, floods, famine and pestilence brought by ecological collapse are signs of the apocalypse foretold in the Bible? Why care about global climate change when you and yours will be rescued in the rapture? And why care about converting from oil to solar when the same God who performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes can whip up a few billion barrels of light crude with a word?"

Because these people believe that until Christ does return, the Lord will provide. One of their texts is a high school history book, "America's Providential History." You'll find there these words: "The secular or socialist has a limited-resource mentality and views the world as a pie ... that needs to be cut up so everyone can get a piece." However, "[t]he Christian knows that the potential in God is unlimited and that there is no shortage of resources in God's earth ... while many secularists view the world as overpopulated, Christians know that God has made the earth sufficiently large with plenty of resources to accommodate all of the people."

No wonder Karl Rove goes around the White House whistling that militant hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers." He turned out millions of the foot soldiers on Nov. 2, including many who have made the apocalypse a powerful driving force in modern American politics.

It is hard for the journalist to report a story like this with any credibility. So let me put it on a personal level. I myself don't know how to be in this world without expecting a confident future and getting up every morning to do what I can to bring it about. So I have always been an optimist. Now, however, I think of my friend on Wall Street whom I once asked: "What do you think of the market?"I'm optimistic," he answered. "Then why do you look so worried?" And he answered: "Because I am not sure my optimism is justified."

I'm not, either. Once upon a time I agreed with Eric Chivian and the Center for Health and the Global Environment that people will protect the natural environment when they realize its importance to their health and to the health and lives of their children. Now I am not so sure. It's not that I don't want to believe that - it's just that I read the news and connect the dots.

I read that the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has declared the election a mandate for President Bush on the environment. This for an administration:

* That wants to rewrite the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act protecting rare plant and animal species and their habitats, as well as the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires the government to judge beforehand whether actions might damage natural resources.
* That wants to relax pollution limits for ozone; eliminate vehicle tailpipe inspections, and ease pollution standards for cars, sport-utility vehicles and diesel-powered big trucks and heavy equipment.
* That wants a new international audit law to allow corporations to keep certain information about environmental problems secret from the public.
* That wants to drop all its new-source review suits against polluting, coal-fired power plants and weaken consent decrees reached earlier with coal companies.
* That wants to open the Arctic [National] Wildlife Refuge to drilling and increase drilling in Padre Island National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world and the last great coastal wild land in America.

I read the news just this week and learned how the Environmental Protection Agency had planned to spend $9 million - $2 million of it from the administration's friends at the American Chemistry Council - to pay poor families to continue to use pesticides in their homes. These pesticides have been linked to neurological damage in children, but instead of ordering an end to their use, the government and the industry were going to offer the families $970 each, as well as a camcorder and children's clothing, to serve as guinea pigs for the study.

I read all this in the news.

I read the news just last night and learned that the administration's friends at the International Policy Network, which is supported by Exxon Mobil and others of like mind, have issued a new report that climate change is "a myth, sea levels are not rising" [and] scientists who believe catastrophe is possible are "an embarrassment."

I not only read the news but the fine print of the recent appropriations bill passed by Congress, with the obscure (and obscene) riders attached to
it: a clause removing all endangered species protections from pesticides; language prohibiting judicial review for a forest in Oregon; a waiver of environmental review for grazing permits on public lands; a rider pressed by developers to weaken protection for crucial habitats in California.

I read all this and look up at the pictures on my desk, next to the computer - pictures of my grandchildren. I see the future looking back at me from those photographs and I say, "Father, forgive us, for we know not what we do." And then I am stopped short by the thought: "That's not right. We do know what we are doing. We are stealing their future. Betraying their trust. Despoiling their world."

And I ask myself: Why? Is it because we don't care? Because we are greedy? Because we have lost our capacity for outrage, our ability to sustain indignation at injustice?

What has happened to our moral imagination?

On the heath Lear asks Gloucester: "How do you see the world?" And Gloucester, who is blind, answers: "I see it feelingly.'"

I see it feelingly.

The news is not good these days. I can tell you, though, that as a journalist I know the news is never the end of the story. The news can be the truth that sets us free - not only to feel but to fight for the future we want. And the will to fight is the antidote to despair, the cure for cynicism, and the answer to those faces looking back at me from those photographs on my desk. What we need is what the ancient Israelites called hochma - the science of the heart ... the capacity to see, to feel and then to act as if the future depended on you.

Believe me, it does.

Subject: How to Stop Bush's Agenda

Hi,

Everyone we know has been worried sick over what the new Bush administration is going to do to America's environment and what they have in mind for each of us. Mr. Bush and his religious right congressional followers believe that is is immoral to tax the rich to help the poor. They believe the middle class and those living in poverty have exploited corporations and the wealthy with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid--so they want to "privatize" these programs and leave the most vulnerable Americans even more vulnerable. They believe the poor and middle class have exploited corporations with unnecessary lawsuits for injuries. So Mr. Bush's agenda is to cap how much money a physically injured person can collect from those found guilty of having inflicted the injury.

Mr. Bush's agenda is possible because most of the evangelical and Pentecostal churches support whatever he wants. And many Roman Catholics have also granted their support. We thought it was time to expose the facts to American churchgoers.

The Yurica Report has published and updated a unique report titled "The Bloodguilty Churches." It is a carefully researched work (190 endnotes). It reveals the following:

The Bible prohibits: deregulation; vote rigging; privatization of Social Security; tax cuts for the wealthy; invading Iraq; oppressing the Hispanics who cross our borders; cutting Medicaid services; cutting Medicare services; hurting the environment; failing to answer all the questions from the 9/11 families; Tort Reform; torture; lying to congress; bribes; tampering with the justice system; appointing prejudiced nominees to the bench; tipping the scales of justice to favor big corporations.

The Yurica Report did something else: we prepared a Congressional Handbook in a PDF file by excerpting portions of The Bloodguilty Churches so that our readers could send the link to members of congress to inform them what the biblical position is on Mr. Bush's specific agenda items. You really need to view the photos accompanying this article to get the full impact. We know that other such instances have occurred and been nearly lost to memory -- this is a cruel chronicling, but the world needed to see the 'evidence'.

This is also yet another reminder of what a racist war this is -- and that the Bushies' entire imperialist agenda is grotesquely racist in its arrogance.

I saw this incident on video on cable -- they tried to edit and turn down the screams...but it was still horrifying enough. The most poignant and gutwrenching image to me was of the little boy, perhaps 3, standing frozen and bewildered against a wall, watching his bloodcovered sister wailing.

One couldn't help but feel pity for some of the soldiers too -- you could see that they were horrified at what they had created. They too will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. Add several to the 50,000+ casualties who are psychologically and spiritually maimed for life.

'Believe the Evidence of Your Eyes'

by Dr. Teresa Whitehurst

Sometimes the truth comes from the strangest places.

While arguments for and against the war rage on TV and radio talk shows, in chat rooms and editorial pages, at last someone breaks through all the noise to say: "I ask our youngest citizens to believe the evidence of your eyes" (sic). That person is President George W. Bush.

Rather than debate endlessly and spout off opinions, we should remember that Mr. Bush is particularly concerned about the dark-skinned people in the dark parts of the world: "By our efforts, we have lit a fire as well, a fire in the minds of men. It warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress, and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world." Indeed, it already has:  [Photo]

This tiny girl, splattered with her parents' blood when they were murdered while driving home, was not the only dark-skinned tot to suffer the untamed fire of freedom. This "unfortunate incident" orphaned six children in one untamed burst of automatic gunfire.

Spraying families with bullets has become commonplace for news-numbed Bushians, a rather ho-hum "well that's the price of democracy," "freedom isn't free, you know," "those people don't value human life like we do" event. What's remarkable about this particular murder is that it was captured, frame-by-frame, bloody moment by bloody moment, and posted on BBC.com as the inaugural balls were in progress a world away.

If you didn't know better, you'd think you were watching a scene from Schindler's List.

This story in pictures came right out and named the bad guys who murdered the little ones' mum and dad – U.S. soldiers. Following orders, I'm sure. Confused and frightened themselves, quite likely. But U.S. soldiers nonetheless. Like it or not – and I don't, for many reasons – that will be what millions of people around the world take away from this incident.

Our Youngest Citizens Have Eyes to See

As Bush advises, our youngest citizens should believe what they see.

This advice isn't necessary, of course. Children, unless they've been raised in neglectful or harshly "disciplinarian" homes, are quite empathetic to human and animal suffering. Those whose parents really listen to them and care about their feelings tend to develop a keen ability to identify with other people – and others' feelings – later in life.

[with the exception of psychopathic children, like Dubya, who prefer
torturing animals...  Anni]

When our youngest citizens see evidence of harm – a bloodied body, for example, or a tear-stained face – they don't discount it with adult explanations that these things "are the price of liberty" or "will be worth it when we bring democracy" to this or that country.

Young people may pretend to be persuaded to avoid criticism, but they aren't as easily fooled as adults who've learned to be conservative with their compassion.

For the few hours that it was on the front page of BBC News online, the story must have caught the attention of many young citizens; it was posted on the eve of the inauguration, in the early evening when American kids are home from school but not yet in bed.

Of course, relatively few kids are sufficiently interested in current events to read Internet news. But some precocious teens – even in Bushian homes – are news junkies.

And speaking of young people, how many youngsters in the rest of the world saw this eyewitness-news story? How did the image of those screaming kids – with whom young people everywhere can identify, since they were only recently little themselves – affect children in the UK, in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in Australia, in Egypt … in Iraq?

What will they remember of Mr. Bush's War of Terror? What images and feelings will flood them, for years to come, whenever they hear the words "American," "Christian," "soldier" … even "democracy," "liberty," or "freedom"?

Like the most terrifying horror film imaginable, ;the images take you there. When you see the first frame, you find yourself imagining how it must have felt to be in that car, maybe dozing on your sister's shoulder, when all the confusion started.

My daughter noticed that the brakes were on in the first photo – had the father tried to stop, panicking and not sure what he was supposed to do?

A Silly Scary Dream

You're in the back seat with your brothers and sisters when you hear your parents cry out, perhaps one saying, "Do they want us to stop or go faster?" and the other saying "I don't know, but look they have guns! The children! They're going to shoot!"

You hear deafening bangs, loud and rapid. Your little mind is muddled, everything is a blur, and all you hear are screams. You notice that you're screaming, too. You feel something wet on your skin, wet and warm. What? Rain? Inside the car? No, can't be…You call for Mommy. She won't answer you. What's wrong with Mommy? She never ignores you when you cry. Your eyes are clamped shut now, or maybe you just can't see. Your brother is yelling for your father, but no answer. The screaming is hurting your ears. The front seat looks empty. Where are Mommy and Daddy? Did they fall down?Your hear yourself screaming, but you can't think. Even your big sister is crying, and she's the brave one! You see lights headed your way. Your heart is pounding out of your chest. The bad men are coming toward the car! Where are Mommy and Daddy? Why won't they help you?You feel sticky. What is it? What is it? The car door is open and you can see more clearly. Your tiny heart stops for a moment because you think you know what the red stuff on your hands and clothes and face is – it's part of Mommy and Daddy! The dull thud of reality hits you like a brick in the face. Mommy and Daddy aren't helping you because that red sticky stuff all over you is blood – their blood. And that means your parents are dead. Dead. Dead. Not coming back – No, can't be, can't be… The bad men are coming to get you! You scream and try to escape. They talk strange words, they have lights on their heads and guns on their bodies – they're taking you!

You scream and scream as the men surround you, blinding you with the lights on their heads. You can't understand what they're saying, but you recognize them: They're the men called "American Christians" … the ones who kill people! Panic overwhelms you and you shake uncontrollably. Your hands are sticky…Maybe if you keep screaming loud enough and long enough you'll wake up, like when you have a bad dream, and you'll be back in your own bed and realize you've just been having "a silly scary dream," as Mommy calls them. And she'll look down at you and kiss you, and everything will be all right.

So you squeeze your eyes shut and scream louder. Longer. Wake up now. It's just a silly scary dream. You open your eyes to see the evidence before you. No! It's still here, it's real! Now you can see that Mommy and Daddy are lying down! They do look dead … can it be true? Daddy was talking to Mommy just a minute ago! Oh, make it not real – scream louder!

"I ask our youngest citizens to believe the evidence of your eyes. You have seen duty and allegiance in the determined faces of our soldiers. You have seen that life is fragile, and evil is real...." George W. Bush, Jan. 20, 2005

Why I Am Obsessed With War

by Harry Browne

January 29, 2005

George Bush was reinaugurated in Washington last week. Fittingly, the inauguration parade route was lined the entire way with armed guards – so many armed guards that they had to stand shoulder-to-shoulder. As with the rest of America, Washington, D.C. was in a state of siege.

The militant air of the entire affair was very much like a parade in the old Soviet Union or even in Nazi Germany.

And in his speech, George Bush proclaimed his desire for world domination – to have the power and the right to decide who is good and who is bad, who shall live and who shall die, what form of government will exist in each nation.

He made it clear that if he has a use for your government, you will keep it – no matter how oppressive.

But if your government doesn't suit him, if it declares its independence from the United States, we will "liberate" your country and impose what we call "democracy" on it – no matter how advanced your civilization, no matter how much or how little your people may approve of your current form of government.

Of course, by "we" he meant George Bush.

George Bush is, in effect, the ruler of the world – more powerful than the United Nations, more powerful than the countries of Europe, more powerful than the Congress of the United States, more powerful than the people of the United States – a majority of whom now believe that George Bush was wrong to invade Iraq. But that majority opinion has no effect on George Bush, who continues to try to impose His way upon Iraq, and who most likely now has His sights set on Iran.

My Obsession

If you’ve been reading my articles or listening to my radio show, you may be aware of how much attention I’ve given to this drive for world domination – dressed up as the "War on Terror" and "Operation Iraqi Freedom." I’ve written over and over about these wars.

You might say I’m obsessed with war.

And you’d be right.

I’m obsessed with war because of what war really is. And because of what war is doing to America.

Why am I so obsessed?

Sacrifice

A January 21st editorial in The Wall Street Journal summed up George Bush’s inauguration speech very neatly:

The entire speech was about Iraq, as a way of explaining to Americans why the sacrifice our troops are making there is justified.

Aye, and there’s the rub.

Troops don’t sacrifice. Only individuals can sacrifice. For some of them, the sacrifice is a year out of their lives. For others, the sacrifice is in living for a year or more in constant fear and danger.

But for too many, the sacrifice is one’s life. The loss of one’s whole life.

That’s not the same as giving a tenth of your income to the church, or working 15 hours a week in a soup kitchen, or spending a day a week helping out at a nursing home. When you sacrifice your life, you give up everything. The world has ended. What you were no longer exists. No more life, no more love, no more music, no more sports, no more breathing, no more interest in anything.

And when you’ve sacrificed your life, it no longer matters whether Iraq is "liberated" or oppressed, because you don’t exist any more. It no longer matters whether George Bush is a great leader or a megalomaniac, because you no longer have a life with which to be affected by it. You are no more.

George Bush can speak cavalierly about such sacrifices. He can say "freedom is always worth it." He can speak with gratitude about such sacrifices – because he is making no sacrifice whatsoever.

He can tell young people that when you die "you will add not just to the wealth of our country, but to its character."

But he is not the Messiah. He can’t bring those dead people back to life. He can not restore their ability to taste love, to enjoy fellowship, to pursue a career, to bask in the sheer joy of being alive.

He can’t return to a mother her dead son. He can’t return to a wife her dead husband. He can’t bring a dead soldier back to raise his children. He can’t do anything to restore what he has stolen from people with his glib assurances about WMDs, mobile bioweapons labs, unmanned planes dropping chemical weapons on the East Coast of the United States, about freedom always being worth the price – a price that to him is effectively zero.

The dead are dead, and they can’t come back. They won’t dance at any inaugural balls – or even attend their alumni reunions. They won’t attend presidential banquets – or even eat at the local coffee shop. Not ever again.

They are dead. And George Bush killed them. He killed them as certainly as though he personally had fired a rocket launcher at their homes.

Who or What Is He?

If he didn’t know that his plan to "liberate" people who hadn’t asked to be liberated, to bring democracy to people who hadn’t asked for democracy, would lead to the deaths of thousands of people, he is not only incompetent and unfit to hold office, he is surely psychopathic and needs to be incarcerated.

Only a psychopath would stand in the midst of thousands of security guards and speak of "the force of human freedom."

Only a man so insulated from the real world by palace sycophants, by little Napoleons filled with utopian fantasies, and by callous, ambitious schemers to whom the lives of others mean nothing – only a man so insulated could possibly speak of "the expansion of freedom in all the world."

Only a man with no link to reality could start a war that destroys lives and families and then say, "Every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth."

Only a snake oil salesman can rain missiles and bombs on other countries and then say that no "human being aspires to live at the mercy of bullies."

Only a man divorced from human reason can imprison people – possibly for life – without due process of law and then say that "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves."

Only a liar can proclaim that he will decide which countries must be remade and then say, "No one is fit to be a master, and no one deserves to be a slave."

Only a devious schemer can announce a goal of "ending tyranny in our world" while he is imposing a new tyranny in his own country – our country.

So you tell me: what kind of a President do we have?

And what has he given us other than wars, fear, and a state of siege?

Why the Obsession?

Yes, I have become obsessed with these wars.

Josef Stalin is reputed to have said that a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths only a statistic.

But no matter how many people die in Iraq, every single one of them is a tragedy – a tragedy I will neither ignore nor forget. And that’s why I’m obsessed with this war.

I’m obsessed with each and every death – because in fact each and every death is more than a statistic or a tragedy. It’s murder.

I will never forget the people, American or Iraqi, whose lives have been irrevocably destroyed – the people who have been murdered, the people who lost those they love, the people whose homes have been smashed to bits, the people who are maimed for the rest of the only lives they will ever live.

And neither will I ever forget who it is that killed them.

They were killed by a relatively small group in Washington who believe they were put there by God to remake the world – not remake it in God’s image, but in Their own.

I believe it is a crime to take the life of another person. And no murder of an innocent person can be justified by saying it was necessary to achieve some larger goal – whether or not that goal is claimed to be a worthy one.

When reformers create murder and mayhem, they justify it by saying, "You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs." But it’s always someone else’s eggs that get broken. And the omelet never materializes – even after millions of eggs are broken, as they were during the two World Wars.

Life

Yes, I’m obsessed with war.

I’m obsessed with war because I’m obsessed with life.

I love life. I love my wife Pamela. I love being in love with her. I love the 19 years we’ve been playing house together – pretending we’re grown-ups, just like our parents.

I love music. I love food. I love reading. I love sports. I even love sleeping. I taste and love so many parts of life.

I don’t ever want to die.

And I don’t want anyone else to die – except maybe those who treat life so trivially that they can speak of the sacrifice of other people’s lives as being a worthwhile price to pay for some idealistic goal they believe they will achieve – a goal that will give them an exalted position in the history books.

Reformers such as George Bush are like children playing games based on fantasies. They see no reason to discover whether others before them have harbored the same ambitions – and failed miserably to achieve their goals. It’s of no concern to them that without an understanding of the history and cultures of other peoples, they have no hope either to persuade or to dominate other people.

And they pay no attention to the fact that in the process of "ending tyranny in our world" they are imposing a new tyranny in their own country – our country.

Yes, I’m obsessed with war.

I’m obsessed with war because I love life.

And so I will continue to fight against America’s wars with every bit of strength, with every bit of talent, with every resource I can spare.

Subject: Australian View of Inaugural - The Empire of Vulgarity

January 21, 2005

The Empire of Vulgarity

by Mike Carlton - Sydney Morning Herald  (Australia)

George Bush's second inaugural extravaganza was every bit as repugnant as I had expected, a vulgar orgy of triumphalism probably unmatched since Napoleon crowned himself emperor of the French in Notre Dame in 1804.

The little Corsican corporal had a few decent victories to his escutcheon. Lodi, Marengo, that sort of thing. Not so this strutting Texan mountebank, with his chimpanzee smirk and his born-again banalities delivered in that constipated syntax that sounds the way cold cheeseburgers look, and his grinning plastic wife, and his scheming junta of neo-con spivs, shamans, flatterers and armchair warmongers, and his sinuous evasions and his brazen lies, and his sleight of hand theft from the American poor, and his rape of the environment, and his lethal conviction that the world must submit to his Pax Americana or be bombed into charcoal.

Difficult to know what was more repellent: the estimated $US40 million cost of this jamboree (most of it stumped up by Republican fat-cats buying future presidential favours), or the sheer crassness of its excess when American boys are dying in the quagmire of Bush's very own Iraq war.

Other wartime presidents sought restraint. Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address in 1865 - "with malice toward none, with charity for all" - is the shortest ever. And he had pretty much won the Civil War by that time.

In 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt opened his fourth-term speech with the "wish that the form of this inauguration be simple and its words brief". He spoke for a couple of eloquent minutes, then went off to a light lunch, his wartime victory almost complete as well.

But restraint is not a Dubya word. Learning nothing, the dumbest and nastiest president since the scandalous Warren Harding died in 1923, Bush is now intent on expanding the Iraq war to neighbouring Iran.

Condoleezza Rice did admit to the US Senate this week that there had been some "not so good" decisions. But the more I see of her gleaming teeth and her fibreglass helmet of hair and her perky confidence, the more I am convinced that back in the '60s she used to be Cindy Birdsong, up there beside Diana Ross as one of the Supremes of Motown fame. I don't think it's a good idea to let her make a comeback as Secretary of State.

The war in Iran is under way already, if we believe Seymour Hersh, the distinguished investigative writer for The New Yorker magazine.

Hersh reported this week that clandestine US special forces have been on the ground there, targeting nuclear facilities to be bombed whenever Bush feels the time is ripe.

"The immediate goals of the attacks would be to destroy, or at least temporarily derail, Iran's ability to go nuclear," he wrote, quoting reliable intelligence sources.

"But there are other, equally purposeful, motives at work. The government consultant told me that the hawks in the Pentagon, in private discussions, have been urging a limited attack on Iran because they believe it could lead to a toppling of the religious leadership."

Naturally, Pentagon flacks rushed out to deny all. But then they did that when Hersh broke the story of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam in 1968, and again when he revealed the torture of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. A tussle for the truth between Hersh and the Pentagon is no contest.

What terrifies me most is the people planning this new war. The CIA professionals have been frozen out: too weak and wimpy for the Bushies.

The Defense Secretary, the incompetent Donald Rumsfeld, has seized control, aided by two Pentagon under-secretaries. One is Douglas Feith, a mad-eyed Zionist largely responsible for the post-invasion collapse of order in Iraq, a civilian bureaucrat memorably described by the former Centcom commander, General Tommy Franks, as "the f---ing stupidest guy on the face of the Earth".

The other is army Lieutenant General William G. (Jerry) Boykin, whose name also rings a bell. Jerry is a born-again Christian evangelical, a three-star bigot who, in his spare time, stumps the country in full uniform, preaching that America's enemy is Satan, Allah is a false idol, and that George Bush has been ordained by the Lord to rout evil.

"He's in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this," Jerry told a prayer meetin' in Oregon just a while back.

Be very afraid.

WE WERE HUMANS

The uproar of the poor becomes more acute when one thinks about the enormous cost that the "arms race" presents.

It has been estimated, that in 2000 the world spent 756 billion dollars on arms.

This figure would have been enough to feed for a year, 4 billion poor children (almost the entire population of the earth).

The price of a war tank is enough to build schools for 30 thousand students.

The cost of a jetfighter represents that of 40000 pharmacies.

90 countries are still suffering from the plague of the antipersonnel landmines; 20.000 people a year become victims of these landmine explosions.

Half of the victims of the last fifty years of conflicts have been children.

It is estimated that in the whole world there are more than 300.000 child soldiers.

In industrialized countries military expenses are 30 times greater than aid to developing countries.

The average price of a landmine

Production USD 8,00

deactivation USD 5,000

Modern war's victims are:
34% children
59% civilians
7% Soldiers

Indonesian Tsunami Probably Tripped by Exxon-Mobil Works

Jan. 25, 2005

"More than 1600 Indonesian troops have guarded the Exxon-Mobil facilities in Aceh at one time in recent years. The Indonesian government gleans more than $100 million per year from the works."

One cubic mile of natural gas extracted every four years at epicenter Aceh facility presents a probable man-made factor in 9.0 earthquake with accompanying tsunami that killed more than 225,000 people. Think of a gigantic boulder sitting precariously, nudged over the edge with a small lever. Compiled by PESN from Paul Noel and JAH

ACEH, INDONESIA -- Exxon-Mobil has a 60-billion-standard-cubic-foot-per-day facility near Aceh. In the span of four years the company extracts more than one cubic mile of natural gas from the formations beneath what has turned out to be the epicenter of the Aceh earthquake. The gas field there has been producing for much longer than four years, and is one of the largest such facilities in the world.

Scientists have known for some time that earthquakes in the order of 4.0 on the Richtor scale have been caused by oil drilling and other earth intrusive practices.

(chart) click for enlargement : Correlation of Increase in Major Earthquakes to Increse in Oil Combustion from 1900 to 2000 (www.ForceBorne.com)

An analogous phenomena can be seen with earthquakes associated with large Hydro Dams. For example, Fontana Dam (USTVA North Carolina) has been associated with up to 4.0 earthquakes and routinely causes 2.5 quakes some fifty-plus years after construction.

Due to its much greater scale, and the presence of six geological faults in the area, the Three Gorges Dam in China will create very large earthquakes if its reservoirs are ever filled completely. According to Chinese news reports, tremors measuring 6.1 and 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the Zhangye region at 8:41 p.m. and 8:48 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2003.

Water was drained to safe levels over the next two days, and the China Daily reported that the dams were structurally compromised: "Cracks five centimetres wide had opened in the walls of the Shuangshuzhi reservoir, while the Zhaizhaizi reservoir had developed a fissure one centimetre wide and 410 metres long", the newspaper reported.

The weight of water overlying an unstable geological formation or fault exerts incredible pressure to which the rock layers inevitably yield. Therefore it is legitimate to ask, "What role did the extraction of oil and gas from the immediate area play in the 9.0 Aceh earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004?"

World oil production alone (not including natural gas) is approximately 80 to 100 million barrels of oil per day. That is a tremendous volume of oil, too large to even visualize in your mind’s eye, which is being extracted EVERY DAY.

The world’s oilfields are pressurized naturally by natural-gas within the oil. We've all probably seen "oil gushers" on films involving oil discovery: oil shoots high into the air as it is forced out of the ground by the natural-gas pressure in the underground oilfield.

The oil is not only pressurized, but is also hot. As it is extracted, the pressure gradually decreases until the oil well is no longer pressurized. Comparable to an empty aerosol can that still has some liquid in it, but which is no longer expelled by depressing the spout, the gas pressure decreases to the point where the drilling company needs to burn energy for pumping. Thus it becomes less profitable to extract the oil.

In some cases, in order to extract the remaining oil, cold water is injected/pumped into the well, causing the oil to float on top of the injected water. As the oil well fills with cold water, the last remaining oil which floats up on top of it is forced up through the well head to the surface, until the well is "dry" – i.e. "empty", but not literally "dry" since it is now filled with water.

During these various stages of the oil-extraction process, the outer crust of the globe is gradually being depressurized and cooled internally, causing contraction for both of these reasons. When objects cool down they automatically shrink/contract in size. If you let high-pressure air or gas out of a cylinder ice forms around the outlet, and cools the entire cylinder. If you let some of the air out of a football, or basketball, the ball shrinks and goes badly out of shape.

Apply that to the Earth and you have earthquakes as the crustal layers shift in response to the loss of pressure from below while the water pressure above increases. This is simple common sense –- not rocket science. It is a fact so simple that anyone who understands the oil-extraction process would understand the effects. Or at least, they should understand.

Therefore, the people doing this oil extraction should know the risk of triggering earthquakes, even if they ignore the consequences of rapidly dropping the underground pressure -- as the financial gurus and oil executives apparently regularly do.

Should these executives and decision-makers, who are also the profit-makers, be required to accept liability for the consequences?

Another obvious fact that is never quoted in relation to global warming is that internal combustion engines do not just give off greenhouse gases, they also give off tremendous heat – every single one of them. If you try putting your hand near the cooling-radiator or exhaust manifold of a running engine, you are going to snatch it away again quickly to prevent burns. The professors never factor this into the global-warming equations, and never mention it in the news. They mention only the gas emissions.

Think about the millions of engines giving off tremendous heat every day, some all day every day. Compound this on top of the greenhouse gases and you can see why the scientists' and professors' prognostications have turned out to be wrong. The ice caps are melting much faster than the "experts" first predicted, and faster than they are still wrongly predicting now. What pressures does this shift in weight from the poles place on the planet?

If oil is continually being created deep in the earth, as some theorists argue, what happens when this new oil rises into a former oil deposit that is now filled with water? Will this also result in further earthquakes as pressure builds up with gas being forced into the same space?

To connect the dots, therefore, we have to link the rapid “harvesting” of subterranean and undersea oil, and the reason for doing so – the thirsty tanks of obsolete gas-guzzling vehicles – with the consequence of earthquakes and tsunamis. Not only in Asia, but also around the world, are many oilfields with rapidly dropping pressure, into which water is being pumped to extract the last expensive barrels. How many more disastrous quakes will humanity face as the result of this artificially-maintained appetite for fuel?

Feedback Four Collaborative Anecdotes by J.R., Jan. 27, 2005

The article was interesting. There are however three other considerations:

1) In the early 20th century Nicola Tesla was studying mechanical resonance using a dual chambered device about the size of a soda can. He strapped it to he support beams in his laboratory in NY City and generated an earthquake that shook several square blocks. There is a court order on file blocking him from further testing of the device within the city limits of NY.

2) In the early 1980's a bored laid off oil field employee in southern California dropped seismic sensors into a hole under his mobile home and monitored them using his home PC. He found regular rhythm patterns that could only be artificial before several small earthquakes. Someone was trying to relieve the stress on the San Andreas fault. He reported it to the press and the day the news hit the papers, the rhythm stopped.

3) Much has been made about the relationship between the magnetic field and the earth's crust. The magnetic field strength has dropped from 4 gauss in the air (roughly 4000 gauss in the crust) to 0.4 gauss (400 gauss in the crust) in the past 2000 years. This weakening has weakened the integrity of the crust. Further, military experiments in Russia, Greenland, Finland, and the USA using atmospheric heaters (HAARP comes to mind) cause movement in the magnetic field. These movements lead to further weakening along critical stress points.

4) There have been two good correlations done between underground nuclear testing and earthquake activity. One of them was reported on the net. I'll try to find it again and give you the address. The other one is a classified Air Force document I had access to while working in a nuclear detection outfit in the 1970's. Watch the news for underground test announcements and then watch for a couple of days and you will see as many as three 6+ quakes.

Just interesting info.

Andaman quakes leave seismologists worried (Jan 28)
http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=13658319
MUMBAI -- Unusual events "unheard of in the history of seismology" have been recorded in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, with more than 120 such events being recorded in the last one month, according to seismologists. The seismology department of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the Earth Sciences Department of the Indian Institute of Technology here have recorded over 120 such unusual events in the islands following the December 26 earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale that triggered tsunamis which wreaked havoc in several parts of the country.Of these events recorded at BARC's Gouribidnur station in Karnataka, at least over 33 events were above 5 on the Richter scale, they said, adding "this is unusual and alarming as large amount of energy is being released so frequently." Eleven events with surface wave of magnitude 5, indicating large amount of energy close to Nicobar Islands was also recorded, the seismologists said."Since yesterday, 16 events which range from 5.2 to 5.8 on the Richter scale have been recorded," they said."Whether these events are foreshocks or aftershocks - it is not clear, and has to be taken up seriously and the data analysed as fast as possible," the scientists said. "Both strike slip and dip slip are taking place simultaneously and these factors have to be taken very seriously both by scientists and authorities," they added.

The bizarre pattern of aftershocks ranging between 5.2 and 6.2 Richter continues in the Tsunami hit Nicobar island of India. According to PTI, another earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit India's Nicobar Islands today, the Hong Kong Observatory said The earthquake was recorded at 0536 GMT with its epicenter about 345 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh in Indonesia's Aceh province. The tribal people are saying that many miles below the earth’s surface, something is happening they never experienced before. According to sources, the tectonic level disturbances based on recorded and plotted aftershock quakes, are very slowly moving northwards towards Assam in India.A theory exist that says the recent massive earth quake in northeast of Banda Aceh in Indonesia's Aceh province really has its roots in the series of earthquakes in Assam over the last three years. It seems the Andaman plate line of 700 miles may be collapsing. That will be a much larger catastrophe. India's remote Andaman and Nicobar archipelago has been hit by a series of aftershocks since a 9.0-strong earthquake off Aceh on December 26 which produced tsunamis that struck shores across the Indian Ocean, killing more than 280,000 people. The tsunami devastated the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, killing at least 1,925 people and leaving 5,555 missing. More than 42,000 others are still in makeshift camps across the Andaman and Nicobar group.

Hollow Election Held on Bloody Day

Dahr Jamail

*BAGHDAD, Jan 30 (IPS) - An overnight rocket attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad that killed two Americans and injured four others set the tone for the election Sunday.*

By the end of the day at least 29 people had been killed in attacks on polling stations and voters. An hour after polling stations opened at 7am, mortar blasts began echoing across the capital city, at almost an attack a minute at times.

Most Iraqis stayed home after resistance fighters threatened to ”wash the streets with blood.” A suicide bomber at a security checkpoint in Monsour district of western Baghdad killed a policeman and wounded two others. A man wearing a belt of explosives detonated himself at a voters queue in Sadr City in Baghdad, killing himself and at least four others.

Many Iraqis who had intended to vote stayed indoors as gunfire echoed around the downtown area of Baghdad. Mortar attacks on polling stations continued through the day.

”Yesterday a bicycle bomb killed someone near my house,” said 32-year-old Ahmed Mohammed. ”I never intended to vote in this illegitimate election anyway, but if I had wanted to I would never go out in these conditions.”

With draconian security measures in place, even some ambulances rushing to victims of bomb attacks were turned back at security checkpoints.

”Baghdad looks like it's having a war, not elections,” said Layla Abdul Rahman, a high school English teacher. ”Our streets are filled with tanks and soldiers and our bridges are closed. All we are hearing is bombings all around us, and for the last two nights there have been many clashes that last a long time. We shouldn't have had elections now because it's just not practical with this horrible security.”

The threats by the resistance fighters followed by a string of attacks across Baghdad clearly reduced voter turnout. ”How can we call this democracy when I am too afraid to leave my home,” said Baghdad resident Abdulla Hamid. ”Of course there will be low turnout here with all these bombings.”

A series of bombings have been reported also in Hilla, Mosul, Kirkuk, Basra and Baquba. In Samarra where a roadside bomb struck a U.S. patrol, there was no sign either of voters or of the police on the streets, according to reports from there.

”Nobody will vote in Samarra because of the security situation,” Taha Husain, head of Samarra's local governing council told reporters.

Interim U.S.. appointed prime minister Ayad Allawi announced Saturday that martial law will now be extended for another month. The hope of many Iraqis that the elections will bring security and stability continue to fade.

Voter turnout in the Kurdish controlled north of Iraq and the Shia dominated southern region has been heavy, but most polling stations in the capital city and central Iraq remained relatively empty.

Aside from security reasons, many Iraqis chose not to vote because they question the legitimacy of these elections.

”They are wrong on principle, the High Commission for Elections was appointed by Bremer (former U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer), so how can we have a legitimate election under these circumstances,” said Sabah Rahwani in the Karrada district of Baghdad. ”This election only serves the interest of the occupier, not Iraqis. This is only propaganda for Bush.”

U.S. President George W. Bush announced in his weekly radio address Saturday that ”as democracy takes hold in Iraq, America's mission there will continue.” His administration has also recently announced that U.S. troops will remain in Iraq at least until 2006.

The parliament elected by the Sunday election will draft a new constitution for the country. A referendum on that is scheduled for Oct. 15, followed by another election Dec. 15.

Iraq elections set stage for deeper crisis of US occupation regime

By Patrick Martin

31 January 2005

The election January 30 in Iraq marks a further intensification of the contradictions confronting American imperialism, both in Iraq and at home. It will neither resolve the crisis of the American stooge regime in Baghdad, hated and despised by the vast majority of the Iraqi people, nor legitimize the US occupation in the eyes of world and among large sections of the American public.

George W. Bush emerged from the White House briefly to make a triumphal statement hailing the vote. The US media carried wall-to-wall, gushing coverage all day Sunday. But even the combined propaganda powers of the US government and the corporate-controlled media machine cannot transform an election held at gunpoint and under military occupation into a genuinely democratic event.

Initial reports on voter turnout were driven by the political imperative to put the best possible face on the election and influence public opinion in the United States, which is increasingly turning against the war. The turnout figure began at 90 percent plus—numbers reported, naturally enough, on Fox News. Then an Iraqi election official put the figure at 72 percent nationwide. This was subsequently lowered to 60 percent nationwide, then to 60 percent “in some areas.”

The compliant US media dutifully swallowed all these numbers in succession, never challenging their accuracy or questioning how each figure could be so quickly supplanted by a lower one as the day wore on.

The 72 percent figure, for instance, issued just before the polls closed, was inherently improbable, given that most polling places did not even open in the Sunni Triangle. With the vast majority of Sunnis, some 20-25 percent of Iraq’s people, boycotting the election, turnout among the rest of the population would have to be near-unanimous to bring the total up to 72 percent.

The reports on turnout were supplemented by television news footage of happy Iraqis celebrating their new-found freedom to vote, praising the American military, and thanking President Bush. There is ample reason to believe that these scenes were largely staged for the benefit of the media—like the scenes of Iraqis tearing down the statue of Saddam Hussein in Firdos Square after the US invasion nearly two years ago. (Similar scenes were a hallmark of the Baathist dictatorship as well, with cheering crowds vowing to sacrifice their lives for Saddam.)

According to Robert Fisk of the Independent, a major British daily newspaper, “The big television networks have been given a list of five polling stations where they will be ‘allowed’ to film. Close inspection of the list shows that four of the five are in Shiite Muslim areas—where the polling will probably be high—and one in an upmarket Sunni area, where it will be moderate.” Sunni working class areas were entirely off limits, he noted.

In some cases, the media reports were literally military propaganda handouts. ABC News, for instance, reported thousands of voters in Fallujah, the city virtually destroyed by the US military onslaught last November. The source for this report of surprisingly high turnout was the US military command in the shattered city. Meanwhile, other news outlets put the turnout in Fallujah as minuscule, on a par with the other predominantly Sunni cities where few polls opened and few voters turned out.

The major theme of the media blitz was that the Iraqi people had thronged to the polls in defiance of threats of violence from the insurgent groups opposed to the US occupation. Such coverage ignores the largest purveyor of fear and violence in Iraq by far: the American military occupation, which leveled Fallujah and has blitzed many other Iraqi cities, including Ramadi, Samarra and Mosul, all centers of the Sunni population.

According to Fisk, one of the few credible reporters working in the region, the incessant raids by US ground forces have been supplemented by a new air war: “American air strikes on Iraq have been increasing exponentially. There are no ‘embedded’ reporters on the giant American air base at Qatar or aboard the US carriers in the Gulf from which these ever increasing and ever more lethal sorties are being flown. They go unrecorded, unreported, part of the ‘fantasy’ war which is all too real to the victims but hidden from us journalists. The reality is that much of Iraq has become a free-fire zone (for reference, see under ‘Vietnam’) and the Americans are conducting this secret war as efficiently and as ruthlessly as they conducted their earlier bombing campaign against Iraq between 1991 and 2003, an air raid a day, or two raids, or three.”

The cumulative weight of this violence and destruction is far greater than that of the terror bombs planted by Islamic groups like that allegedly headed by Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian supporter of Osama bin Laden. The US military has killed an estimated 100,000 Iraqis since Bush ordered the invasion in March 2003, a total which dwarfs the casualties caused by terrorist attacks on civilians.

Moreover, the US government and media routinely label all acts of armed resistance against the US invaders, and their stooges in the puppet regime, as “terrorist”—a verbal device designed to criminalize all Iraqi opposition to foreign occupation. In truly Orwellian fashion, the US military occupation, notwithstanding its tactics of torture and mass killing, is identified with “democracy,” while those Iraqis who fight against it are, by definition, enemies of democracy, “anti-Iraqi” elements, and even fascists.

There is evidence of direct intimidation of Iraqis by the US military in the course of election day. American soldiers were reported going through the city of Mosul, largely Sunni-populated and a center of insurgent resistance, and seeking out Iraqi non-voters, who could easily be identified by the absence of a semi-permanent ink stain on the thumb. Any Iraqi without such proof of voting was subjected to questioning as to why he had not voted—and no doubt, had his name entered on US intelligence lists of suspected supporters of the resistance, targeted for future arrest or attack.

More fundamentally, the entire election process is fatally tainted by the US military occupation. The regime that conducted the vote was appointed by the US occupation authorities, with the United Nations giving its rubber-stamp approval. The timing and procedures for the election were determined by US officials. And it was President Bush who decided earlier this month to reject the pleas of a majority of the Iraqi cabinet and oppose any postponement of the vote so as to allow for increased Sunni participation.

January 30 saw an unparalleled display of American military power on the streets of Baghdad, Mosul and other Iraqi cities. The 150,000 US troops were out in force, backed by hundreds of armored vehicles, and supplemented by another 150,000 US-trained Iraqi police and soldiers. Even the American media could not disguise the spectacle of Iraqis filing in to the polls through rolls of barbed wire, being frisked three separate times under the eyes of US snipers, while US helicopters and war planes roared overhead.

It was not a scene of freedom, but one of occupation and brutal subordination.

Within Iraq, the January 30 vote sets the stage for greater political conflicts and growing opposition to the US occupation regime. No official results are expected for at least a week, a delay which gives the US-backed regime plenty of time to manipulate the totals.

In the Shiite and Kurdish areas of the south and north, where a large voter turnout was reported, religious and tribal leaders are collaborating with the American occupation in return for promises of political power and financial concessions in a new US-backed regime. Their devil’s bargain may produce a regime headed by the United Iraqi Alliance, the main Shiite coalition, with Kurdish support—or they may be defrauded by their American overlords.

The week before the vote saw a rash of reports in the American press that Prime Minister Ayad Allawi’s party was gaining. Given the absence of reliable polls or forecasts of voter turnout, such speculation reveals the hopes of the Bush administration, and its effort, in league with the media, to condition public opinion to accept a manipulated outcome engineered by Washington. Allawi’s Iraqi National Accord was supported and financed by the CIA for more than a decade, and the former Baathist enforcer is still the favorite of the White House—perhaps as the middleman in a coalition regime embracing both the Shiite and Kurdish parties.

Even should such a coalition emerge, facilitated by the Sunni boycott, Kurdish separatism could quickly break it up. The National Assembly elected Sunday is to draft a constitution in which Shiite demands for majority control will run up against demands for quasi-independence in the Kurdish provinces. An early flashpoint will be the status of Kirkuk, at the center of the rich northern oilfields, with its population evenly divided among Arabs, Turkomen and Kurds, but claimed by the Kurdish parties as part of the future region of Kurdistan.

Within the United States, the government-backed media blitz on the triumph of democracy in Iraq is aimed at intimidating opponents of the war and US occupation. But this propaganda campaign only intensifies the contradictions in the Bush administration’s political position. If the Iraqi people have “taken control of their country,” as the White House claims, why must 150,000 US troops remain there? Why can’t 25 million Iraqis defend themselves from the small bands of foreign terrorists and Saddam Hussein loyalists who supposedly make up the resistance?

“Democratization” is merely the latest pretext for the US occupation, following the now discredited claims that the US invaded Iraq to destroy Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction or because of Saddam’s alleged connections with the terrorists who perpetrated the attacks of September 11, 2001. The democracy pretext, too, will be exploded by events.

Elections Are Not Democracy (07 February 2005)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/013005F.shtml
The United States has essentially stopped trying to build a democratic order in Iraq, and is simply trying to gain stability and legitimacy. By the time you read this, you will know how the elections in Iraq have gone. No matter what the violence, the elections are an important step forward, for Iraq and for the Middle East. But it is also true, alas, that no matter how the voting turns out, the prospects for genuine democracy in Iraq are increasingly grim. Unless there is a major change in course, Iraq is on track to become another corrupt, oil-rich quasi-democracy, like Russia and Nigeria. CLIP

This Election Will Change the World. But Not in the Way the Americans Imagined, By Robert Fisk (29 January 2005)
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/01292005A.shtml
Shias are about to inherit Iraq, but the election tomorrow that will bring them to power is creating deep fears among the Arab kings and dictators of the Middle East that their Sunni leadership is under threat. America has insisted on these elections - which will produce a largely Shia parliament representing Iraq's largest religious community - because they are supposed to provide an exit strategy for embattled US forces, but they seem set to change the geopolitical map of the Arab world in ways the Americans could never have imagined. For George Bush and Tony Blair this is the law of unintended consequences writ large. CLIP

Some Just Voted for Food (January 31, 2005)

BAGHDAD, Jan 31 (IPS) - Voting in Baghdad was linked with receipt of food rations, several voters said after the Sunday poll. Many Iraqis said Monday that their names were marked on a list provided by the government agency that provides monthly food rations before they were allowed to vote. "I went to the voting centre and gave my name and district where I lived to a man," said Wassif Hamsa, a 32-year-old journalist who lives in the predominantly Shia area Janila in Baghdad. "This man then sent me to the person who distributed my monthly food ration. "Mohammed Ra'ad, an engineering student who lives in the Baya'a district of the capital city reported a similar experience. Ra'ad, 23, said he saw the man who distributed monthly food rations in his district at his polling station. "The food dealer, who I know personally of course, took my name and those of my family who were voting," he said. "Only then did I get my ballot and was allowed to vote." "Two of the food dealers I know told me personally that our food rations would be withheld if we did not vote," said Saeed Jodhet, a 21-year-old engineering student who voted in the Hay al-Jihad district of Baghdad. There has been no official indication that Iraqis who did not vote would not receive their monthly food rations. Many Iraqis had expressed fears before the election that their monthly food rations would be cut if they did not vote. They said they had to sign voter registration forms in order to pick up their food supplies. Their experiences on the day of polling have underscored many of their concerns about questionable methods used by the U. S. -backed Iraqi interim government to increase voter turnout. Just days before the election, 52 year-old Amin Hajar who owns an auto garage in central Baghdad had said: "I'll vote because I can't afford to have my food ration cut. . . if that happened, me and my family would starve to death. " (...) Where there was a large turnout, the motivation behind the voting and the processes both appeared questionable. The Kurds up north were voting for autonomy, if not independence. In the south and elsewhere Shias were competing with Kurds for a bigger say in the 275-member national assembly. In some places like Mosul the turnout was heavier than expected. But many of the voters came from outside, and identity checks on voters appeared lax. Others spoke of vote-buying bids. The Bush Administration has lauded the success of the Iraq election, but doubtful voting practices and claims about voter turnout are both mired in controversy. CLIP

Statment from the International Action Center on the election in Iraq http://www.iacenter.org/images/electioniniraq.pdf
The Election in Iraq: "a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
- William Shakespeare
The media and the Bush Administration are in high gear, trumpeting this weekend's election as a victory for democracy. However, this election changes nothing on the ground in Iraq. On Monday, January 31, the day after the election, the people of Iraq woke up with 150,000 U.S. troops occupying their country, CIA asset Ayad Allawi the appointed head of state, and the Pentagon's plans to build 14 permanent military bases still proceeding.Democracy means, "rule of the people." What happened on Sunday merely continues rule by military occupation and an appointed government. This was a meaningless election. This piece of political theater can't even be accurately described as an election. In an election, voters get to choose candidates who will then hold office and exercise some measure of power. In this election, voters didn't get to vote for a candidate, or even for a political party. Instead, they were allowed to vote for a list, which may include several parties or individuals--there was no way to know. These lists were approved by the Bremer-appointed High Commission for Elections. The names of the 7,700 candidates were not publicly available, so there was no way to know who was actually being voted for. The candidates who are eventually selected by this process will exercise no executive or legislative authority. They will form a transitional national assembly, which will draft a constitution under the supervision of the occupiers. (...) It is telling that the Bush Administration is claiming this is the first democratic election to be held in Iraq in fifty years. The election referred to as the last democratic election was held under a U.S. & British appointed monarchy to select an advisory body that had no executive or legislative power. Its only function was to provide a façade of legitimacy to the puppet regime; the election did not change the fact that the people of Iraq were under the thumb of U.S. and British oil companies. Less than 3 years later, a massive popular revolutionary upheaval overthrew the corrupt monarchy and, since that time, the U.S. and Britain have been trying to return Iraq to the same semi-colonial status. This election is part of their plan. The U.S. government has never demonstrated any interest in bringing democracy to the Middle East. Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger outlined U.S. policy in the region when he said, "Middle East oil is too important to be left to hands of the Arabs." The U.S. has made no effort to bring democracy in any of the nations in the region where it has maintained troops-the people of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates all live under feudal monarchies, without free elections, civil liberties, civil rights, union rights, or rights for women. This was an election under occupation. Jean,

Maybe this will become a song like "Alice's Restaurant", and then become a movement...the "Dog Movement" Movement! The possibilities are endless: "Plant a flag - show your support for America!" "Spreading Freedom, One Pile at a Time." And you can imagine the headlines:  "Dogs Found Responsible for Flagging Support for US Invasions..." "Park Joggers Paeon US Presence in Canine Organic Extrusions..."

POLICE HUNT POO PROTESTERS

Police in Germany are hunting pranksters who have been sticking miniature US flags into piles of dog poo in public parks.

Josef Oettl, parks administrator for Bayreuth, said: "This has been going on for about a year now, and there must be 2,000 to 3,000 piles of excrement that have been claimed during that time."

The series of incidents was originally thought to be some sort of protest against the US-led invasion of Iraq.

And then when it continued it was thought to be a protest against President George W. Bush's campaign for re-election.

But it is still going on and the police say they are completely baffled as to who is to blame.

"We have sent out extra patrols to try to catch whoever is doing this in the act," said police spokesman Reiner Kuechler.

"But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red handed."

Legal experts say there is no law against using faeces as a flag stand and the federal constitution is vague on the issue.
