Miscellaneous Subjects #212: A Little Bit of Everything
This is a smaller compilation than usual because I now have less time to process emails and prepare compilations. The snow is finally almost completely melted here and I'll soon start shovelling compost and sowing seeds. So if you email me something and do not get a timely reply from me it is because I'm not checking my emails or have my hands too dirty to even touch the computer keyboard ;-)

"I didn't want the Dark Series in the beginning but soon realized how important it is to know what is going on. The "dark ones" thrive on ignorance."

"Difficult and painful as it is, we must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

Urge Congress to Oppose Overreaching and Punitive Crime Laws (May 4, 2005)
The criminal justice system needs major reform. But instead of focusing on the obvious flaws in the death penalty system and reforming sentencing guidelines, several Members of Congress are pushing legislation that would dramatically increase the application of the death penalty, impose overly harsh sentences and sweep innocent people into prison. Tony Blair Can't Win By Greg Palast (04 May 2005)
A British reporter from America explains why Britons will vote for a guy named 'Brown' - so Blair can't lose. Mark my words: Tony Blair won't be re-elected Thursday. However, he will remain in office. That's because Brits don't vote for their Prime Minister. They've got a "parliamentary" system there in the Mother Country. And the difference between democracy and parliamentary rule makes all the difference. It is the only reason why Blair will keep his job - at least for a few months. CLIP
Scientists: Earth's Energy Is Imbalanced (May 1, 2005)
"The energy imbalance is an expected consequence of increasing atmospheric pollution, especially carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and black carbon particles," said Jim Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. Scientists have concluded that more energy is being absorbed from the sun than is emitted back to space, throwing the Earth's energy out of balance and warming the globe. CLIP
BBC's 'Doctor Who' Show Parodies 9/11 Inside Job (April 29 2005)
In what was a blatant tip of the hat to 9/11 conspiracy pop culture, BBC's new Doctor Who series featured a plot which mirrored every aspect brought forth by those who contend that the September 11 attack was an inside job. In the recent episode 'Aliens of London,' a spaceship crashes into Big Ben in a sequence eerily similar to the events of 9/11.
Planned US-Israeli Attack on Iran - by Michel Chossudovsky (1 May 2005)
At the outset of Bush's second term, Vice President Dick Cheney dropped a bombshell. He hinted, in no uncertain terms, that Iran was "right at the top of the list" of the rogue enemies of America, and that Israel would, so to speak, "be doing the bombing for us", without US military involvement and without us putting pressure on them "to do it": "One of the concerns people have is that Israel might do it without being asked... Given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objective is the destruction of Israel, the Israelis might well decide to act first, and let the rest of the world worry about cleaning up the diplomatic mess afterwards," (quoted from an MSNBC Interview Jan 2005) Israel is a Rottweiler on a leash: The US wants to "set Israel loose" to attack Iran. Commenting the Vice President's assertion, former National Security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski in an interview on PBS, confirmed with some apprehension, yes: Cheney wants Prime Ariel Sharon to act on America's behalf and "do it" for us. I hope that you are well. Thank you as always for your personal time and effort that you sacrifice in service to your ern readership. Ive just been reading and enjoying, Rising Phoenix Series #39: The Rising Tide of Light and Love. I liked your wise feedback that you shared with Beverley, and would like to include the following paragraph in a section I am putting on my website.
But in the end, the way to deal with all the disturbing news and information that come our way is to take all of this as a challenge and a test to get us to develop greater soul-level equanimity, to learn to face the truth without shying away from it all while not allowing an unnecessary emotional reaction to overwhelm us and deprive us temporarily of our inner connection with the universal well of wisdom that can shed light and bring to us a deeper understanding of what our role may be, if any, with regard to the knowledge that has come our way. I don't think it is healthy and spiritually balanced to allow ourselves to be taken down into the lower end of the vibrational scale of consciousness - into utter despair, unremitting sadness, explosive anger or deep revulsion - for in doing so we only open ourselves to being disempowered and rendered useless, for a time, regarding the positive contributions we can absolutely make towards the solutions, if only through holding the basic inner sense that ultimately the universe is benevolent towards all Life and all sentient beings, that goodness, kindness and love always prevail, and that no matter how difficult a situation may appear, some greater good will always come from it. I think the above advice is timely, and I wholeheartedly agree that although these times are emotionally overwhelming and motivationally draining to those with a caring, sensitive, spiritual nature we must indeed rise up and adapt to the challenges that these end-times entail. Ive just uploaded 6 new sections full of quotes about looking at the difficulties in our lives as tests or initiation experiences to surmount, rather than horrible things to run away and hide from. Maybe the ERN readership will find the information of interest.
These quotes focus upon the idea that the dark individuals and events that clash with us in our lives are providing spiritual initiations, that if mastered, will result in a good deal of soul growth. Our inner divinity is developed by surmounting the so-called negative aspects of our lives. These quotes are all about seeing the darkness in a different light, and embracing the evolutionary lessons that the dark has to offer. The dark players give us chances to practice shinning our light. Our greatest spiritual growth is acquired by positively perceiving the ones of lesser light as an opportunity to test our spiritual strength and progress our souls development.

I've noticed that there is a pattern of human rights violations and abuses globally, by all governing bodies. We who are aware, already know that this is the last ditch effort to reign in all of mankind under the umbrella of one global dictatorship. The events of today are a simply a culmination of our collective passiveness and handing over our responsibility to our governing bodies to take care of everything for us. Now that we've given them the authority to "take care of us", they are taking care of us alright!
Average people don't believe that their governments would be behind some of the most heinous human rights abuses ever. Have you ever read "their" protocols? Are you aware of "their" long term plans for this planet?
As the pendulum swings back into balance, there are going to be more and more ferocious attempts to remain off balance by those who refuse to go with the flow, and wish for things to continue on this destructive path. Have you ever noticed that in government paintings where a clock is included, the clock always reads 11 o'clock? They have known for quite some time that this is the final hour.

IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME
Gandhi said, Be the change in the world that you want to see.
I now know what Ghandi meant, that IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.
Its a simple mathematical equation, 1 + 1+ 1 = 3,
If I want to change this world, IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.
Mr. Jackson sang about the man in the mirror,
Just what do you think that song means?
In order to make a change, IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.
Martin Luther King had a great dream,
I must have had the same dream, seen the same thing.
I see a wave of LOVE, spreading like the sea,
I see the LOVE wave moving outward because, IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.
The hatred of the world is like a fire, we all throw logs on you see,
And if I want that fire out, then IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.
Ill use my logs instead to build up people and family,
Because I so desire for change, and IT ALL BEGINS WITH ME.

Subject: Marc Vella the amazing pianist
Dear Jean, I have to tell you about the beautiful example for your Light Series that I met lately!
Marc Vella is a wonderful French pianist and composer who's been traveling for 20 years around the world (30 countries) with his enormous piano, bringing love everywhere he goes... He stops anywhere, starts to play to and with people in the streets, expressing his emotion in front of the beauty of the world, beauty of all beings... "I wanted to listen to the sunrise, I wanted to know the deserts, stars and eyes, and so I started the journey with my piano..."
"In this foolish project, I have no ambition, no goal. But what I know is that we become what we want. If we want nothing, we shall become nothing. And it's the same for all humanity. If we want nothing, nothing will change and the despair of the world will progress..."
He gives conferences in schools and universities to tell children and students to dare their dreams, to fight for the beauty and to offer their victories to the world.
We were 300 to watch his movie, listen to his music and his words, and what an emotion! Try http://www.marcvella.com !

Last week in a federal courtroom in San Francisco, CA, a jury delivered a unanimous verdict in favor of 8 non-violent, peaceful activists. These young activists were staging a sort of sit-in in the local Eureka office of then-congressman, Frank Riggs. Some guys had dragged in a bunch of sawdust and a big old redwood stump, and 8 young activists locked down around it. The whole purpose of this was to protest ongoing, destructive clear-cuts, and hopefully to draw the attention of the media to the rapid destruction of Northern California Forests and watersheds. What happened to them was that the police and sheriffs were summoned, and when they arrived, they asked the protesters to unlock. When they refused, the cops proceeded to hold their eyes open, and daub them with Q-tips dipped in liquid pepper spray. Two of these protesters were minors, ages 16, and 17. This all took place 8 years ago. Finally, three court trials later, a federal jury decided that this was indeed the use of excessive force by the police. The precedent set here is significant, as it rules this type of torture to be outside the law. This is all the plaintiffs were asking for...that these kinds of torturous practices not be allowed. Pre-trial, they offered to drop the lawsuit if the police would out-law this kind of torture. They refused then, but have to obey the court rulings anyway, which is the same thing.
I hope you'll take the time to look at the amazing website of "the pepper spray 8", and learn more about this victory against torture.
Sending you Love-Light and Peace,

Subject: 9/11 cover-up on C-SPAN 2 this Saturday with Prof. David Ray Griffin
Date: 4 May 2005
This message is available on the Internet at http://www.WantToKnow.info/050504davidraygriffin
Prof. David Ray Griffin will appear on C-SPAN 2 (Book TV) this Saturday, May 7th at 2:30 PM EST (11:30 AM Pacific time). In his 80-minute lecture to a standing room audience of 400 at the University of Wisconsin, Prof. Griffin, one of the most respected theologians in the US, discusses his extensive research into the 9/11 cover-up. This nationally televised lecture first aired last weekend and will be repeated Saturday for those who missed it. David Ray Griffin is professor emeritus at the Claremont School of Theology, where he taught for over 30 years. He has authored or edited over two dozen scholarly books.
Two years ago, a trusted friend sent Prof. Griffin an email referring him to the reliable, easily verifiable information on the two-page 9/11 summary from our website - at http://www.WantToKnow.info/9-11cover-up. After exploring the links to revealing articles on major media websites and progressing eventually to our 60-page 9/11 timeline and other excellent resources, he became convinced of a major cover-up around 9/11. Putting aside all of his work in theology, Prof. Griffin then devoted himself to writing The New Pearl Harbor, a devastating book which systematically presents a detailed account questioning the official story of 9/11.
Following the publication of the 9/11 Commission Report, Prof. Griffin published a second compelling book, The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions, which convincingly deconstructs the official story presented in the report. These two books have sold nearly 100,000 copies both in the US and abroad. They have been translated into several languages, and have convinced many key people of the need for a truly independent investigation into that fateful day.
As this is the first time that the 9/11 cover-up has received national television coverage, I encourage you to watch this excellent program and invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join you. If you feel so called, email C-SPAN expressing your gratitude and support. We are moving ever closer to the critical mass necessary to force the media to cover this vital issue in news headlines where it belongs. Together, I know that we can and will build a brighter future for all of us. Below are several informative links and a newspaper article (with added links for easy verification) related to Prof. Griffin's lecture on what may be the greatest cover-up ever to be exposed.
With very best wishes,
Fred Burks for the WantToKnow.info Team

Theologian calls for response to 9/11 (April 19, 2005)
David Ray Griffin asks the tough questions about Sept. 11, contending U.S. officials had some knowledge of what was coming and possibly orchestrated the attacks. IFAW: Canada kills 250,000 Seal Pups in Annual Hunt
Contact: Chris Cutter of International Fund for Animal Welfare, 508-737-4623 or email@example.com; Web: http://www.ifaw.org
CHARLOTTETOWN, Canada, April 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- As the Canadian commercial seal hunt draws to an end, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare - www.ifaw.org), today estimated a quarter of a million (250,000) harp seal pups have been cruelly slaughtered in only 10 days of hunting.
The government sanctioned commercial hunt for seal pups opened in the Gulf of St Lawrence on 29 March 2005 and closed on 2 April 2005 resulting in the deaths of approximately 100,000 seal pups. On 15 April the hunt then moved on to the "Front" off the coast of Newfoundland where it continues with an estimated 150,000 harp seals already slaughtered.
Canada's annual commercial seal hunt is the largest marine mammal hunt in the world. The quota for this year's hunt is 319,500 seals, set as part of a three-year government "management" plan to kill almost one million (975,000) seals. Seals are killed and skinned for their pelts, which are then sold to fur distributors and the fashion industry.
"Many people mistakenly think Canada stopped hunting baby seals decades ago," said Fred O'Regan, IFAW's president and CEO. "But the size of Canada's modern, commercial hunt is as big now as it has been in 50 years. It's time the Canadian government ended this cruel and unsustainable cull - there should be no further quota."
The international community is appalled by the cruelty of Canada's hunt for baby seals. In opposition, parliamentarians from Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands are working to create legislation to ban seal products and the U.S. and the European Council are creating resolutions condemning the hunt. In the U.S., seals and other marine mammals have been protected from hunting since 1972 under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
As part of the campaign to end the Canadian commercial seal hunt, IFAW has brought media and government officials from around the world to view the hunt firsthand. This year, European parliamentarians and media from Canada and around the globe have observed the hunt with IFAW's help. IFAW hunt monitors work to strict rules laid down by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), but while observing the hunt this year, IFAW monitors were physically attacked and verbally threatened by some sealers on the ice. IFAW condemns the use of violence against its staff and also condemns the use of violence to further animal welfare campaigns.
About IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare):
IFAW was founded in 1969 to end the Canadian baby seal hunt. Over the next two decades, IFAW won many hard fought victories for seals, including the 1983 European Community import ban of whitecoat and blueback sealskins. These aggregate victories almost stopped the baby seal hunt in the 1980s. In 1996 Canadian government subsidies propelled the seal hunt to levels unseen in decades and today it is bigger than ever. 'US invasion of Iraq was a resource war'
By Melanie Gosling
May 03, 2005
Cape Town - With the rapid decline of global oil supplies, the United States is heading for an economic crash unlike anything since the 1930s. And the collapse of the dollar will affect every nation on earth.
This is the chilling warning from academic Richard Heinberg of the New College of California. Heinberg is in Cape Town, South Africa, this week to share his views on what governments and societies need to do to mitigate the imminent global crisis after world oil production peaks.
"It's too late to maintain a 'business as usual' attitude. What is required is to manage the change that peak oil will bring in a way that causes the fewest casualties. This must be done at an economic and geopolitical level, to fend off resource wars. The US invasion of Iraq is clearly a resource war," Heinberg said on Monday.
Global oil discovery peaked in the 1960s and oil production is likely to peak as soon as 2007. With a world economy based on fossil fuel, the economic and social consequences will be dire.
'They say if they have 10 years to prepare, the economic and social chaos could be minimised' In his most recent book, Power Down: options and actions for a post-carbon world, Heinberg describes the options available to avoid catastrophe.
Wearing a T-shirt that read: "Wake up! You are here," with an arrow pointing to a graph of a peak in oil production, Heinberg said world governments were aware of the pending crisis. The United States department of energy had commissioned a report on the probable impacts of "peak oil", the point at which global oil production will no longer meet demand, which was released in February.
"The report was compiled mainly by ex-CIA people. The CIA has always kept a close watch on resources. They found that peak oil would provide the US and the world with an 'unprecedented risk and management problem'.
"They say if they have 10 years to prepare, the economic and social chaos could be minimised. But if it's less, the US will face a serious problem and the government will have to manage it without public input. For that, read martial law. The report found oil price volatility will increase to unprecedented levels," Heinberg said.
The US response is not to cut oil consumption by making major lifestyle changes, and scale back on economic activity, but to use the military to maintain control over oil in the Middle East.
"The long-range plan is for the West to control the Middle East by the military so it can control the price of oil."
This was formalised as far back as 1979 by former US president Jimmy Carter, in what became known as the Carter Doctrine, which stated that America would use the military to maintain access to the oil reserves in the Middle East.
Clearly we need to find substitutes for oil, says Heinberg, but the available energy alternatives are not reassuring.
Natural gas extraction will peak a few years after oil, extraction rates for coal will peak in decades, nuclear energy is dogged by unresolved problems of waste disposal and solar and wind energy will have to undergo rapid expansion if they are to replace even a fraction of the energy shortfall from oil. And the enthusiasm about a hydrogen economy comes from politics rather than science, he said.
"Our real problem is that we are trapped in a perpetual growth machine. As long as modern societies need economic growth to stave off collapse (given existing debt-and-interest-based national currencies), we will continue to require ever more resources yearly. But the Earth has limited resources.
"The energy conundrum is thus intimately tied to the fact that we anticipate perpetual growth within a finite system," Heinberg said.
He sketches four main options available in response:
- Following the US leadership in competing for remaining resources through wars;
- Wishful thinking that the market or science will come to the rescue;
- Assuming that we are already in the early stages of disintegration, devoting our energies to preserving the most worthwhile cultural achievements of the past few centuries.
- "Powering down" - reducing energy resource use drastically through economic sacrifice, reducing the population size and developing alternative energy sources.
"The sooner we choose wisely, the better off we and our descendants will be," Heinberg said.
Demand outstripping supply, energy expert warns (April 27, 2005)
One of the world's leading energy analysts has called for an independent assessment of global oil reserves because he believes Middle Eastern countries may have far less than officially stated and that oil prices could double to more than $US100 ($A128) a barrel in three years, triggering economic collapse. What Perplexes your Editor the Most? -`Peak oil' and the coming Kondratieff winter (2 May 2005)
If you were to ask me what puzzles me the most these days with regard to the market, it is the energy market dynamics. The questions I roll over in my mind day after day are the following: 1. If the world is reaching or has reached peak oil production, how rapidly will it decline? 2. If rapidly declining supplies of oil result in rising energy prices, how high does the price of oil need to climb before it tips us from global growth to global contraction? 3. If we head into a global contraction and especially if it triggers the Kondratieff winter, how drastically and how rapidly will global economic demand be curbed? 4. What will be the impact on oil prices if/when the global economy reaches that K-winter freeze-up point? Most analysts including folks like Jim Rogers assume we will have some bumps along the way, but they cannot see anything as drastic as the kind of K-winter we are predicting.

UFO Prevents Blast at Chernobyl Nuclear Plant
Eyewitnesses say that they saw an UFO hovering above the exploded reactor
Sixteen years have passed since the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant on April 26, 1986. The explosion happened at 1:23 a.m. Tons of radioactive products were emitted into the atmosphere. The machine shop of the plant was gripped with fire, and the fire was about to move on to the third power-generating unit of the plant. Firemen managed to extinguish the fire several hours later. Many of them died later of radiation exposure.
Much has been written about the Chernobyl disaster, both in Russia and abroad. It seems that the physical nature of the tragedy has determined, as well as the people who were responsible for it. The fourth power-generating unit was supposed to be repaired. Yet, before shutting it down, the administration of the plant decided to perform several experiments. Steam delivery was cut to one of the turbogenerators in order to discover the period of time that electric power would still be generated due to the rotation of the rotor. The experiment was not well-organized. There was another test conducted simultaneously: the study of turbine vibration.
They started decreasing the capacity of the generating unit at 1 a.m. on April 25. The emergency cooling system of the reactor was shut down at 2 p.m. This was supposed to stop the reactor.
However, the Kievenergo energy company did not know anything about these tests. An energy control officer did not allow the fourth generating unit of the plant to be stopped. These were the prerequisites of the tragedy. Many people are still suffering.
The explosion was very large, but, luckily, it was a thermal blast. The fourth power generating unit was basically destroyed by overheated steam. There was no nuclear explosion. Roughly 180 tons of enriched uranium were in the reactor. If a large blast had happened, half of Europe would not currently be depicted on any maps.
There are many theories to explain such luck. One of the theories is that there was help from an Unidentified Flying Object. When troublesome events started to occur, some people saw a spaceship hovering above the fourth generating unit of the Chernobyl plant. Eyewitnesses say that an UFO was there for six hours and that hundreds of people saw it. People started writing about it only two years after the catastrophe. Of course, such information appeared in magazines on ufology. As it is generally believed, serious people don-t read such magazines and journals.
Here is what Mikhail Varitsky had to say: ?I and other people from my team went to the site of the blast at night. We saw a ball of fire, and it was slowly flying in the sky. I think the ball was six or eight meters in diameter. Then, we saw two rays of crimson light stretching towards the fourth unit. The object was some 300 meters from the reactor. The event lasted for about three minutes. The lights of the object went out and it flew away in the northwestern direction.º
The UFO brought the radiation level down. The level was decreased almost four times. This probably prevented a nuclear blast.
Three years later (on September 16, 1989), the fourth power-generating unit emitted radiation into the atmosphere. Several hours later, a doctor saw an object in the sky above the Chernobyl plant. Doctor Gospina described it as ?amber-like.º She said she could see the top and the bottom of it as well.
In October of 1990, a reporter from the newspaper the Echo of Chernobyl , V. Navran, was photographing the machine shop of the Chernobyl plant. ?I photographed the top of it, includomg a part of the hole above. I remember everything very well; I did not see any UFO. However, when I developed the film, I clearly saw an object that was hovering above the hole in the roof.º The object looked like the one doctor Gospina saw.
It seems that aliens are not worried with the fate of humanity. They are basically worried about the planets environment.
Land of the dead
On April 26 1986, the No 4 reactor at the Chernobyl power station blew apart. Facing nuclear disaster on an unprecedented scale, Soviet authorities tried to contain the situation by sending thousands of ill-equipped men into a radioactive maelstrom. In an extract from a new book by Russian journalist Svetlana Alexievich, eyewitnesses recall the terrible human cost of a catastrophe still unfolding today
April 25, 2005
When a routine test went catastrophically wrong, a chain reaction went out of control in No 4 reactor of Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine, creating a fireball that blew off the reactor's 1,000-tonne steel-and-concrete lid. Burning graphite and hot reactor-core material ejected by the explosions started numerous other fires, including some on the combustible tar roof of the adjacent reactor unit. There were 31 fatalities as an immediate result of the explosion and acute radiation exposure in fighting the fires, and more than 200 cases of severe radiation sickness in the days that followed.
Evacuation of residents under the plume was delayed by the Soviet authorities' unwillingness to admit the gravity of the incident. Eventually, more than 100,000 people were evacuated from the surrounding area in Ukraine and Belarus.
In the week after the accident the Soviets poured thousands of untrained, inadequately protected men into the breach. Bags of sand were dropped on to the reactor fire from the open doors of helicopters (analysts now think this did more harm than good). When the fire finally stopped, men climbed on to the roof to clear the radioactive debris. The machines brought in broke down because of the radiation. The men barely lasted more than a few weeks, suffering lingering, painful deaths.
But had this effort not been made, the disaster might have been much worse. The sarcophagus, designed by engineers from Leningrad, was manufactured in absentia - the plates assembled with the aid of robots and helicopters - and as a result there are fissures. Now known as the Cover, reactor No 4 still holds approximately 20 tonnes of nuclear fuel in its lead-and-metal core. No one knows what is happening with it.
For neighbouring Belarus, with a population of just 10 million, the nuclear explosion was a national disaster: 70% of the radionucleides released in the accident fell on Belarus. During the second world war, the Nazis destroyed 619 Belarussian villages, along with their inhabitants. As a result of fallout from Chernobyl, the country lost 485 villages and settlements. Of these, 70 have been buried underground by clean-up teams known as "liquidators".
Today, one out of every five Belarussians lives on contaminated land. That is 2.1 million people, of whom 700,000 are children. Because of the virtually permanent presence of small doses of radiation around the "Zone", the number of people with cancer, neurological disorders and genetic mutations increases with each year.

There was a moment when there was the danger of a nuclear explosion, and they had to get the water out from under the reactor, so that a mixture of uranium and graphite wouldn't get into it - with the water, they would have formed a critical mass. The explosion would have been between three and five megatons. This would have meant that not only Kiev and Minsk, but a large part of Europe would have been uninhabitable. Can you imagine it? A European catastrophe.
So here was the task: who would dive in there and open the bolt on the safety valve? They promised them a car, an apartment, a dacha, aid for their families until the end of time. They searched for volunteers. And they found them! The boys dived, many times, and they opened that bolt, and the unit was given 7,000 roubles. They forgot about the cars and apartments they promised - that's not why they dived. These are people who came from a certain culture, the culture of the great achievement. They were a sacrifice.
And what about the soldiers who worked on the roof of the reactor? Two hundred and ten military units were thrown at the liquidation of the fallout of the catastrophe, which equals about 340,000 military personnel. The ones cleaning the roof got it the worst. They had lead vests, but the radiation was coming from below, and they weren't protected there. They were wearing ordinary, cheap imitation-leather boots. They spent about a minute and a half, two minutes on the roof each day, and then they were discharged, given a certificate and an award - 100 roubles. And then they disappeared to the vast peripheries of our motherland. On the roof they gathered fuel and graphite from the reactor, shards of concrete and metal.
It took about 20-30 seconds to fill a wheelbarrow, and then another 30 seconds to throw the "garbage" off the roof. These special wheelbarrows weighed 40 kilos just by themselves. So you can picture it: a lead vest, masks, the wheelbarrows, and insane speed.
In the museum in Kiev they have a mould of graphite the size of a soldier's cap; they say that if it were real it would weigh 16 kilos, that's how dense and heavy graphite is. The radio-controlled machines they used often failed to carry out commands or did the opposite of what they were supposed to do, because their electronics were disrupted by the high radiation. The most reliable "robots" were the soldiers. They were christened the "green robots" [from the colour of their uniforms]. Some 3,600 soldiers worked on the roof of the ruined reactor. They slept on the ground in tents. They were young guys.
These people don't exist any more, just the documents in our museum, with their names.

We dug up the diseased top layer of soil, loaded it into cars and took it to waste burial sites. I hought that a waste burial site was a complex, engineered construction, but it turned out to be an ordinary pit. We picked up the earth and rolled it, like big rugs. We'd pick up the whole green mass of it, with grass, flowers, roots. It was work for madmen.
If we weren't drinking like crazy every night, I doubt we'd have been able to take it. Our psyches would have broken down. We created hundreds of kilometres of torn-up, fallow earth. CLIP
Note from Jean: Read the whole article at http://www.guardian.co.uk/ukraine/story/0,15569,1469597,00.html to realize what untold number of people suffered because of Chernobyl and what unimaginable tragedy could have happened in Europe had there been a 5-megaton nuclear explosion...
And just try to imagine for a moment the absolute insanity of all those nuclear bombs still poised to be launched at any moment to strike millions of innocent human beings because some mad politician may foolishly decide to launch these apocalyptic weapons....
Think also of the abomination of depleted uranium tipped ammunitions still used daily in Iraq and their deadly legacy for aeons...

Ten Secrets to Becoming a Catalyst for World Transformation
by Julie Jordan Scott
These secrets are meant to be shouted from roof tops and implemented to the extreme. Each one can be hugely life changing when you integrate it into your life.
This is your official invitation to do so at a higher level than you are currently. Now is the time to join together with passion.
The first step towards this change is changing you. Pick a secret and go with it. Now begin.
1. Choose to have only one way of being: living intentionally, deliberately, purposefully and be consistent to that no matter what hat you are wearing be endeavor towards your larger vision.
2. Reach inside when you hit obstacles. Instead of looking outside yourself by playing a subtle blame game, go deeply within instead. Uncover how you could make a different decision and then take focused, purposeful action accordingly.
3. Reach out to others, sharing your discoveries and thoughts with those inside your circle of influence and those outside your circle of influence. World transformation begins with communicating our beliefs into being.
4. Integrate your truth down to the cellular level. In acting from this level of belief, your transformation will be able to become visible to others. The sense of empowerment will then spread from you to others whose lives with whom you are in contact.
5. Facilitate growth of those around you through mentoring, coaching, teaching, and creating purposeful relationships. Even a "one minute relationship" may have life changing results! Be aware of possibilities in each conversation with each person you meet everyday.
6. Communicate with the power of a laser and the expansiveness of prosperous words. Make each word count. Practice this skill joyfully. Eliminate words of fear, scarcity and lack replacing them with words of love, abundance and prosperity.
7. Meet each person you encounter exactly where they are with love and compassion. Look into their eyes when you talk with them and really REALLY hear their words. Challenge them to no longer accept the status quo.
8. Effectively use your unique gifts rather than living according to someone else's expectations for you. Embrace your gifts as yours. Trying to express someone else's specialness creates counterfeit personal currency. Your gifts are riches like gold and silver.
9. Take passionate action every day. Do not miss a single day. As you are moving seriously towards world transformation, do not settle for manic action. Demand of yourself intentional, love filled, laser focused action. The results will speak volumes.
10. Laugh, cry, love, nurture, applaud with passion! Be alive in all things, whether it be in quiet contemplation of raucous celebration. Spread that aliveness.
Transform your life and in turn transform Your World.

Subject: A good joke: The soldier
From: "A'keara" email@example.com>
A soldier came to a fork in the road and saw a nun standing there. He asked her, "Please Sister, may I hide under your skirts for a few minutes. I'll explain why later." The nun agreed to his request.
Shortly thereafter, the two MPs came running along and asked her if she had seen a soldier running down the road.
She replied, "He went that way".
After the MPs disappeared, the soldier crawled out from under her skirt and said." I can't thank you enough Sister, but you see I don't want to go to Iraq.
The nun said she understood.
The GI said, "I hope you don't think me rude or impertinent, but you have the most beautiful pair of legs I've ever seen!"
The nun replied," If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen the most beautiful pair of balls you've ever seen! I don't want to go to Iraq either!"
