The Big Scoop Series #14: The Insanities of War
As usual in such a time of international crisis, so much is going on that it is easy to fill quickly a new compilation which, of course, is what I've done for you.
Numerous subscribers contributed material to this incredible compendia of richly diverse information that, hopefully, will help you better assess how things stands, where they are headed and what could be your personal contribution to assist in the emergence of a brighter future for all.
A warning though: Some aspects of this compilation are quite bleak and require a strong dose of level-headedness to be considered without being deeply affected emotionally.
I recommend to go into meditation and seek the advice and comfort from your higher Self when necessary instead of allowing feelings of despair and discouragement to overcome you.
As always remember that, in the end, Love, Light and Peace will prevail...

The difference between knowing the path and walking the path is the small jump we are asked to make. That's all it takes. Hold in there everyone, the heat is about to rise in the kitchen and you'll need inner strength and solidity to get through without resorting to fear."
The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community (A breathe of fresh air!)
"In these turbulent and often frightening times, it is important to remind ourselves that we are privileged to live at the most exciting moment in the whole of the human experience. August 5: National emergency demonstration
On Saturday 5 August there will be a national emergency demonstration in London calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, the end of Israel's attacks and the end of Tony Blair's support for George Bush's wars. Israel says no ceasefire and launches a full scale invasion. Bombs and rockets rain down on women, children and other innocents as they huddle in their homes, in refugee shelters, or while they flee holding white flags. How can we stand by and let this go on?...

IMPEACHMENT CHARGES: Conyers Report on Potential Bush Crimes (07-31-2006)

They will also release the number of signers to the media. We need to get as many people as possible to sign the statement. It goes without saying that we all deeply mourn the loss of Lebanese, Gazan and Israeli lives. But instead of negotiating and helping to reduce the violence, Israel's wildly disproportionate response has inflamed the situation. Massive bombing of neighborhoods, roads and even cars with people in them is not just illegal and immoral-- it feeds the forces of extremism. Please join me! No Hezbollah Rockets Fired from Qana by Dahr Jamail (August 1, 2006)
QANA, Aug 1 (IPS) - Red Cross workers and residents of Qana, where Israeli bombing killed at least 60 civilians, have told IPS that no Hezbollah rockets were launched from the city before the Israeli air strike. The Israeli military has said it bombed the building in which several people had taken shelter, more than half of them children, because the Army had faced rocket fire from Qana. The Israeli military has said that Hezbollah was therefore responsible for the deaths. There were no Hezbollah rockets fired from here, 32-year-old Ali Abdel told IPS. Anyone in this village will tell you this, because it is the truth. Abdel had taken shelter in a nearby house when the shelter was bombed at 1 am. When the bombings finally let up in the morning, he went back to the bombed shelter to search for relatives. He found his 70-year-old father and 64-year-old mother both dead inside. They bombed it, and afterwards I heard the screams of women, children, and a few men they were crying for help. But then one minute after the first bomb, another bomb struck, and after this there was nothing but silence, and the sound of more bombs around the village. Masen Hashen, a 30-year-old construction worker from Qana who lost several family members in the air strike on the shelter, said there were no Hezbollah rockets fired from his village. Because if they had done that now, or in the past, all of us would have left. Because we know we would be bombed.Qana had been a shelter because no rockets were being fired from there, survivors said. When Hezbollah fires their rockets, everyone runs away because they know an Israeli bombardment will come soon, Abdel said. That is why everyone stayed in the shelter and nearby homes, because we all thought wed be all right since there were no Hezbollah fighters in Qana. Lebanese Red Cross workers in the nearby coastal city of Tyre told IPS that there was no basis for Israeli claims that Hezbollah had launched rockets from Qana. We found no evidence of Hezbollah fighters in Qana, Kassem Shaulan, a 28-year-old medic and training manager for the Red Cross in Tyre told IPS at their headquarters. When we rescue people or recover bodies from villages, we usually see rocket launchers or Hezbollah fighters if they are there, but in Qana I can say that the village was 100 percent clear of either of those. Dozens killed in Lebanon air raid - Report from Qana (2006/07/30)
More than 40 people, including 20 children, have been killed in an Israeli air strike on the southern Lebanese town of Qana. Displaced families had been sheltering in the basement of a site which was crushed after a direct hit. (...) Witnesses said the early-morning strike flattened several sites on top of sleeping residents. One survivor said the "bombing was so intense that no-one could move". Reliable casualty figures are not yet clear, but reports said more than 40 had been killed, while sources in the Lebanese Red Cross said as many as 50 or 60 had lost their lives. Elderly, women and children were among those killed in the raid, which wrought destruction over a wide area. The BBC's Fergal Keane at the scene saw two small boys pulled from the rubble. Reporters spoke of survivors screaming in grief and anger, as some scrabbled through the debris with bare hands. (...) Correspondents say the town holds bitter memories for the Lebanese. Qana was the site of an Israeli bombing of a UN base in 1996 that killed more than 100 people sheltering there during Israel's "Grapes of Wrath" offensive, which was also aimed at destroying Hezbollah. Before Sunday's attack, the UN said some 600 people (Over 1000 according to the Lebanese government!) - about a third of them children - had been killed by Israeli action in Lebanon since their operations began 19 days ago. A total of 51 Israelis, including at least 18 civilians, have been killed in the conflict, sparked by Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers in a `cross-border' raid earlier in July.

The Yesha Rabbinical Council announced in response to an IDF attack in Kfar Qanna that "according to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy." Israel steps up ground offensive (August 1, 2006) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5233842.stm
Heavy clashes have been taking place in southern Lebanon between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters, after Israel vowed to widen its ground offensive. Both sides claim to have caused casualties, as Israeli warplanes and artillery pounded Hezbollah targets amid fierce resistance. An Israeli army spokeswoman said troops were operating in several locations, kilometres from Israel's border. (...) Israeli Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told Israeli Army Radio it would take the army 10 days to two weeks "to complete the job, and by that I mean that the area in which we want [an] international force to deploy is cleansed of Hezbollah". The Israeli security cabinet on Tuesday unanimously approved widening Israel's ground offensive in Lebanon, although it is not yet clear what the scope of the incursion will be. Israeli media said a decision had been taken to push militants back to the Litani River, up to 30km (18 miles) north of the border.(...) sraeli ministers said between 300 and 400 Hezbollah militants had died, while Hezbollah put the figure at 43, Reuters news agency reported. Hezbollah is unbowed in Baalbek (August 1)
Though Israel says it is temporarily suspending air strikes against Lebanon to investigate the latest Qana tragedy, its drones scarcely stopped buzzing like sinister insects high over Baalbek throughout Monday. Baalbek - home to perhaps the most impressive ancient Roman ruins outside Italy - is now very much Hezbollah country. As a result, the area has been heavily bombed by Israel in the last three weeks, though it lies more than 100km (60 miles) from Israel's northern border and poses no threat as a rocket launching area.
Depleted Uranium Situation Worsens Requiring Immediate Action By President Bush,Prime Minister Blair, and Prime Minister Olmert states Dr. Doug Rokke, PhD. former Director, U.S. Army Depleted Uranium project (July 26, 2006)
The delivery of at least 100 GBU 28 bunker busters bombs containing depleted uranium warheads by the United States to Israel for use against targets in Lebanon will result in additional radioactive and chemical toxic contamination with consequent adverse health and environmental effects throughout the Middle East. Israeli tank gunners are also using depleted uranium tank rounds as photographs verify.Today, U.S., British, and now Israeli military personnel are using illegal uranium munitions - America's and England's own "dirty bombs" while U.S. Army,U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, and British Ministry of Defence officials deny that there are any adverse health and environmental effects as a consequence of the manufacture, testing, and/or use of uranium munitions, to avoid liability for the willful and illegal dispersal of a radioactive toxic material - depleted uranium. The use of uranium weapons is absolutely unacceptable, and a crime against humanity. Consequently, the citizens of the world and all governments must force cessation of uranium weapons use. I must demand that Israel now provide medical care to all DU casualties in Lebanon and clean up all DU contamination. CLIP

WHAT IS THIS CARNAGE REALLY ALL ABOUT ... ? Davic Icke (july 23, 2006)
(...) The Illuminati/Israel nexus has spent decades taking over the government structure of the United States to ensure that (a) Israel has become the recipient of ONE THIRD of all US aid; (b) that it is funded to the tune of billions a year by the US to finance its military spending and build up; and (c) that the United States government pursues a foreign policy of unbelievable bias towards Israel and against the surrounding Arab states. The pathetic statements about Lebanon by Bush that blamed Hezbollah for everything, supported the mass murder of civilians, sorry 'Israel's right to defend itself', and showing no desire to secure a ceasefire, are typical of how Israel controls the US government through the Illuminati network. So is the mantra of 'Iran and Syria are to blame'. These are both on the Illuminati hit list and they need an excuse to target them. Where Were You When They Took Your Rights Away? (28 July 2006)
Can you name the one country on earth where the government can steal elections, strip away basic rights, spy on citizens, and launch wars based on lies, but where the people do not take over the nation's capital in protest? If you said the United States, you'll be wrong on September 5th, when Camp Democracy begins on the National Mall in Washington, DC. At long last, Americans are preparing to say "Enough is enough," and to do what Ukrainians, Mexicans, or any other people not drugged into acquiescence would do when things got this bad: occupy the capital city to demand peace, justice, and accountability. The goal of the many organizations and individuals working to prepare for Camp Democracy is to provide a space for everyone who is fed up with lies and criminality to come and demand change. In fact, at the suggestion of Cindy Sheehan, who will come to Camp Democracy following Camp Casey (August 16 - September 2 in Crawford, Texas), we're calling it Camp Democracy at Fort Fed Up. Our demands will not be for anarchy or disorder, but for a restoration of the rule of law. This is a tough-on-crime movement. We just have a different notion of who the criminals are. And when we get tough, we use nonviolence. Camp Democracy will offer training in nonviolent protest, as well as in media production, activism, and PR. There will be workshops provided by top scholars and activists on a variety of issues - all of them connected by the democracy deficit, the shifting of resources against our will to war and away from useful endeavors. A schedule of events is posted on the right side of the web site www.campdemocracy.org and we'll be building toward the International Day of Peace on September 21, when the Declaration of Peace has pledged to begin civil disobedience. Blair to attend Bohemian Grove This Weekend? (July 29 2006)
This weekend sees the finale of the annual gathering of the Bohemian Club in the secluded redwoods about 75 miles north of San Francisco. It just so happens that Tony Blair will be in San Francisco all weekend along with a whole host of other powerful elite luminaries.Whilst the world seems to be on the brink of major war, Blair is, as reported today by the London Independent, on a flying tour of California to meet and do private business with Rupert Murdoch. The San Francisco Chronicle reports:The tony, private event, a five-day management retreat for 250 executives of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., is set to bring together a VIP guest list for the ages to chat about issues like volunteerism, technology and politics. Among them: Blair, Israeli Vice Premier Shimon Peres, former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers and even U2 lead singer and international do-gooder Bono.Introducing Blair to the crowd on Sunday evening will be California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Republican governor will be celebrating his birthday and is expected to be on hand with first lady Maria Shriver at the event sponsored by Murdoch, a generous donor to the GOP whose mega-corporation owns Fox News, 20th Century Fox, DirecTV and 175 newspapers worldwide --including the New York Post -- with a total circulation of 40 million. Whilst in San Francisco Blair will also dine with George and Charlotte Shultz, the former secretary of state and current state protocol chief, respectively, and he's also expected to meet with Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides. Clinton, Shultz, Gore and Gingrich have all reportedly visited Bohemian Grove on previous occasions. The SF Chronicle also reported that Schwarzenegger was hand picked to become California Governor in 2003 at the Grove. Could Blair and his friends be popping by the Redwoods for a visit this year? The timing of the gathering with Murdoch is very convenient. The Grove hosts the Bohemian Club every year, members include George H.W. Bush, Charles Schwab and Walter Cronkite. It has been reported by major publications in the past that world policy is discussed at the Grove in between frolicking naked, urinating on trees and engaging in bizarre Paganistic rituals. In 2000 Alex Jones infiltrated the gathering and caught exclusive video footage of a bizarre mock human sacrifice ritual, known as "the cremation of care", under a 40 foot stone owl that the members refer to as Molech. Former President Richard Nixon is on record discussing homosexual activity at the Grove, whilst it is also documented that male and female porn stars and prostitutes are shipped in for the annual retreat. We have previously reported that Tony Blair and his wife are "obsessed" with new age practices and ceremonies and have in the past according to the London Guardian, attended Aztec Re-birthing rituals. Furthermore, according to the London Times, Blair has made major political decisions based on new age readings of a hidden force called 'The Light'.

US rejects weapon flight concerns (July 27) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/5221782.stm
The White House has dismissed UK concerns about the use of Prestwick Airport, in Scotland, by US planes carrying bombs to Israel.
Irish refused bombs sent to Prestwick airport (July 30)
BOMBS destined to be used by Israel are being flown via Scotland only because the Irish government refused to allow them to land on its soil. Scotland on Sunday can reveal that after the conflict in Lebanon began three weeks ago, Ireland turned down a United States request for planes carrying 600lb so-called bunker busters to refuel at Shannon airport in Co Clare. As a result, cargo planes carrying the bombs, which the Israeli army is using in its offensive against the Hezbollah, are being flown via Prestwick airport in Ayrshire. The use of Prestwick triggered a furious diplomatic row last week after it emerged that the US had broken aviation rules by failing to notify Britain about the flights. That row is intensifying this weekend as two further American planes carrying 'hazardous' material to Tel Aviv land at the airport. (...) One Irish official said that the bombs would never have been allowed on Irish soil. The source said: "There is absolutely no way that we would allow munitions or weapons to be shipped through Shannon to a location where there is an actual war going on. We would not allow it. It is correct that we allow the US to transport troops to Shannon, but sending bombs to Israel is another matter and completely out of the question for us."Opposition critics last night seized on the situation. Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond said: "It is highly significant that Shannon put its foot down and drew back from allowing the transport of bunker busters, which could become the tinder to escalate dramatically the Middle East conflict." He added: "It is absolutely appalling that we should allow Prestwick to become a stopover to death and destruction." Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell said the fact that more flights were now landing in Scotland was "adding insult to injury". (...) Residents and politicians in Ayrshire have voiced anger at the flights. The airport has been used by the US as a refuelling point for flights involved in the controversial 'extraordinary rendition' of terror suspects to countries where they are alleged to have been tortured. I Was Israels Dupe
Hayden Revisits Sharons 1982 Attack on Beirut and His and Fondas Trip of Shame How do I read todays news through the lens of the past? What I fear is that the Israeli lobby is working overtime to influence American public opinion on behalf of Israels military effort to roll back the clock and change the map of the region, going far beyond issues like prisoner exchange. What I fear is that the progress of the American peace movement against the Iraq war will be diverted and undermined, at least for now, by the entry of Israel from the sidelines into the center of the equation. What I fear is the rehabilitation of the discredited U.S. neoconservative agenda to ignite a larger war against Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran. The neoconservatives 1996 Clean Break memo advocated that Israel roll back Lebanon and destabilize Syria in addition to overthrowing Saddam Hussein. An intellectual dean of the neoconservatives, Bernard Lewis, has long advocated the Lebanonization of the Middle East, meaning the disintegration of nation states into a chaos of squabbling, feuding, fighting sects, tribes, regions and parties. Top US General Exposes War Agenda Based on Corporate Manipulation http://www.WantToKnow.info/060730warmanipulations
War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. In the World War [World War I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted huge gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows. CLIP
Banking on War
William Rivers Pitt writes: "It is, at bottom, all about profit. We sell the weapons, which create warfare, which justifies our incredibly expensive war-making capabilities when we have to go in and fight against the people who bought our weapons or procured them from a third party. This does not make the world safer, but only reinforces the permanent state of peril we find ourselves in."
Chicago Tribune Special: A Tank Full of Gas, A World Full of Trouble
(...) It took Dunbar 29 minutes to empty his swimming pool-size cargo--a workaday chore that reveals the triumphs of our motorized civilization but also the seeds of its possible end. The diesel streaked past a tiny glass porthole on the truck's hoses in a smear of pale yellow, like beer, while the premium unleaded ran colorless as vodka. That particular night, according to one industry method of calculating the explosive energy locked away in crude oil, Dunbar dumped the liquid equivalent of 19.2 million hours of physical labor into the Marathon's storage tanks--or the power of a slave army of 2,200 men working around the clock for a year. This bonanza would be sucked dry by customers in 24 hours, a small, stark example of the nation's awesome petroleum appetite at a time when the planet appears to be lurching into an energy crunch of historic proportions. By now, most Americans realize that something is profoundly awry in the global oil patch. For the majority of motorists, like the "swipe and go" customers at the South Elgin Marathon, the evidence is painfully obvious: record-high fuel costs that have surpassed last year's infamous price spikes following Hurricane Katrina.Yet to truly grasp the scope of the crisis looming before them, Americans must retrace their seemingly ordinary tankful of gasoline back to its shadowy sources. This is, in effect, a journey into the heart of America's vast and troubled oil dependency. And what it exposes is a globe-spanning energy network that today is so fragile, so beholden to hostile powers and so clearly unsustainable, that our car-centered lifestyle seems more at risk than ever."I truly think we're at one of those turning points where the future's looking so ugly nobody wants to face it," said Matthew Simmons, an energy investment banker in Houston who has advised the Bush administration on oil policy. "We're not talking some temporary Arab embargo anymore. We're not talking your father's energy crisis."What Simmons and many other experts are talking about is a bleak new collision between geology and geopolitics.Below ground, the biggest worry is "peak oil"--the notion that the world's total petroleum endowment is approaching the half-empty mark, a geological tipping point beyond which no amount of extra pumping will revive fading oil fields. Peak oil theory is controversial. Many think it alarmist. Yet even Big Oil is starting to gird itself for possible fuel shortages: Chevron, the nation's second-largest oil company, has bluntly declared that "the era of easy oil is over" and is warning energy-hungry Americans that "the world consumes two barrels of oil for every barrel discovered." US begins building treaty-breaching germ war defence centre (31 Jul 2006) /
Construction work has begun near Washington on a vast germ warfare laboratory intended to help protect the US against an attack with biological weapon, but critics say the laboratory's work will violate international law and its extreme secrecy will exacerbate a biological arms race. The centre will have to produce and stockpile the world's most lethal bacteria and viruses, which is forbidden by the 1972 Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
U.S. biodefense lab raises concerns (30 Jul 2006)
The Bush regime is building a massive biodefense laboratory in Maryland that will simulate [stimulate?] calamitous bioterrorism attacks, it was reported Sunday. But much of what the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center in Fort Detrick, Md., does may never be publicly known because the White House intends to operate the facility largely in secret, the Washington Post reported. In an unusual arrangement, the building itself will be classified as "highly restricted space," the newspaper said. Not even nuclear labs operate with such secrecy.

Bush Bids for Sweeping Detention Power
US citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill. A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon's tribunal system, established shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks to detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror.

Two speeches from the American Scholars Symposium: 9/11 and the Neo-Con Agenda, June 24th and 25th, 2006 at the Sheraton Downtown Los Angeles. First hour: William Rodriguez, stairwell janitor for the World Trade Center's North Tower on September 11th, and 9/11 hero. Webster Griffin Tarpley, author of "9/11 Synthetic Terror," "George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography," among other books. Following Zakheim and Pentagon trillions to Israel and 9-11 (July 31, 2006)
Think of this as part two of Recherche du trillions perdu, my Online Journal article on Dov Zakheim, former Bush appointee as Pentagon Comptroller from May 4, 2001 to March 10, 2004. At that time he was unable to explain the disappearance of $1 trillion dollars. Actually, nearly three years earlier, Donald Rumsfeld announced on September 10, 2001 that an audit discovered $2.3 trillion was also missing from the Pentagon books. That story, as I mentioned, was buried under 9-11s rubble. The two sums disappeared on Zakheims watch.Yet on May 6, 2004, Zakheim took a lucrative position at Booz Allen Hamilton, one of the most prestigious strategy consulting firms in the world. One of its clients then was Blessed Relief, a charity said to be a front for Osama bin Laden. Booz, Allen & Hamilton then also worked closely with DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is the research arm of the Department of Defense. So the dark card was shifted to another part of the deck.Judicial Incs bio of Dov (linked below) tells us Zakheim was/is a dual Israeli/American citizen and an ordained rabbi and had been tracking the halls of US government for 25 years, casting defense policy and influence on Presidents Reagan, Clinton, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. He is, as I described him earlier, the bionic Zionist. In fact, Judicial Inc points out that most of Israels armaments were gotten thanks to him. Squads of US F-16 and F-15 were classified military surplus and sold to Israel at a fraction of their value. Judicial Inc also points out that Israel, a country of 4.8 million Russian and Polish Jewish émigrés, flies on one of the biggest Air Forces in the world, thanks to Dov. (...)As the . . . diagram shows, all flights involved in the events traveled very near many military installations, and appear to have traveled in a manner suggesting guidance and possible transfer of the control of the planes among the bases. Since the evidence from the World Trade Center site was quickly removed, there is little concrete evidence of the involvement of Dov Zakheim, who has since left his position at the Pentagon. However, the proximity of Eglin AFB to MacDill AFB in Florida and Dov Zakheim's work via SPC contracts and the Pentagon leasing agreement on both of these installations, combined with SPC's access to World Trade Center structural and security information from their Tridata investigation in 1993, is highly suspicious. Considering his access to Boeing 767 tankers, remote control flight systems, and his published views in the PNAC document, it seems very likely he is in fact a key figure in the alleged terrorist attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001. 9/11 Live: The NORAD Tapes
How did the US Air Force respond on 9/11? Could it have shot down United 93, as conspiracy theorists claim? Obtaining 30 hours of never-before-released tapes from the control room of NORAD's Northeast headquarters, Michael Bronner reconstructs the chaotic military history of that day - and the Pentagon's apparent attempt to cover it up.
Pentagon Suspected of Lying About 9/11
Some staff members and commissioners of the September 11 panel concluded that the Pentagon's initial story of how it reacted to the 2001 terrorist attacks may have been part of a deliberate effort to mislead the commission and the public rather than a reflection of the fog of events on that day, according to sources involved in the debate.

Evidence of Election Fraud Grows in Mexico
It appears that the US media has become so enamored with the construct of the "anti-democratic" left in Latin America that they are incapable of fulfilling their basic mandate to inform their readers when it comes to the political landscape south of the border. But back in the real world, a growing body of credible evidence from mainstream Mexican journalists, independent election observers, and respected scholars indicates that an attempt was made to deliver the presidency to Caldern. It includes a pattern of irregularities at the polls, interference by the ruling party, and some very suspicious statistical patterns in the "official" results.
Silicon Valley Takes On Detroit (July 22, 2006)
At a glittering Los Angeles party, an ambitious new car maker declared the electric car alive and well. The Tesla Roadster, which can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds doesn't come from Detroit, but from high tech Silicon Valley aiming to do what Detroit couldn't make a commercially successful car that doesn't burn gas. "Electric cars don't have to be little, pathetic commuter cars," says Martin Eberhard, CEO of Tesla Motors. "They can be quick and they can be desirable." Eberhard made millions in the computer industry, then convinced other high tech investors like Elon Musk, the founder of PayPal, to put in big money. Musk expects huge rewards if Silicon Valley can break Detroit's grip on the U.S. auto industry. "It's batteries, it's drive electronics, it's electric motors," says Musk. "Those are skills that are present in Silicon Valley and not present in Detroit." There's a quick charger for the Tesla's lithium batteries but the car can be plugged in anywhere. It'll go 250 miles on a single charge - at a cost the company says, of just 1 cent a mile. Tesla expects to quickly sell its first 100 cars for $100,000 each. But, don't give up. The company also has plans for a car for the rest of us. Tesla promises a less expensive four-door family car within three years. For now, however, it's the rich and famous who are getting a charge out of this electric car, such as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who tried out the car and had two words to say: "Very Nice." Note: Don't be surprised if this technology inexplicably disappears as so many others have, like the once heralded 100 MPG http://www.WantToKnow.info/newenergyinformation

IS THERE HELP FOR THE MIDDLE EAST?
Statement by Dieter Duhm and Sabine Lichtenfels
War wages in the Middle East. We, who are involved internationally, have to ask ourselves ever more urgently: What is there to do now? Do we have an answer that could also be helpful to the ones who are affected? The people of the Middle East now need the protection of an alert public which breaks the international silence and has the courage to call the injustice taking place there by its name. Why is Israel so generously supplied with weapons and money? Could it be that a long planned, more comprehensive political strategy is behind all this? Is it a calculated war after all? Is it meant that Israel becomes a base for the American dream of this large free trade zone from Algeria to Pakistan, which they call Greater Middle East? Is it the same power political concept of the Pentagon which today, in parallel, prepares the war in Iran and secures Israel with the necessary military equipment?
When we criticize a derailed government and a derailed military we do not mean the Israelis. A new peace movement has been forming for a long time in Israel and Palestine. A human is a human is a human, is a creature of God and the world, s/he does not belong to any nation, nor government, nor system. As long as these attachments exist, conflicts will persist. Not the craving for power or guns has brought us about but the love between a man and a woman. Why continue to live in a system committing such injustice? Why not fully participate in the work to surpass all these systems? Millions are migrating already towards a new existence beyond states and systems. Can we not build up a large model of reconciliation together?

Farmers Use as Much Pesticide With GM Crops
One of the major arguments in favor of growing GM crops has been undermined by a study showing that the benefits are short-lived because farmers quickly resort to spraying their fields with harmful pesticides.
More than 60 percent of U.S. in drought
More than 60 percent of the United States now has abnormally dry or drought conditions, stretching from Georgia to Arizona and across the north through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin, said Mark Svoboda, a climatologist for the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. An area stretching from south central North Dakota to central South Dakota is the most drought-stricken region in the nation, Svoboda said. "It's the epicenter," he said. "It's just like a wasteland in north central South Dakota." Conditions aren't much better a little farther north. Paul Smokov and his wife, Betty, raise several hundred cattle on their 1,750-acre ranch north of Steele, a town of about 760 people. Fields of wheat, durum and barley in the Dakotas this dry summer will never end up as pasta, bread or beer. What is left of the stifled crops has been salvaged to feed livestock struggling on pastures where hot winds blow clouds of dirt from dried-out ponds. Some ranchers have been forced to sell their entire herds CLIP
Better Get Used to Killer Heat Waves
In Fresno, the morgue is full of victims from a California heat wave. A combination of heat and power outages killed a dozen people in Missouri. And in parts of Europe, temperatures are hotter than in 2003 when a heat wave killed 35,000 people. Get used to it. (...) In the past 25 years, most of the world has seen summer nights getting much warmer with far less evening heat relief, according to a study published earlier this year in the peer-reviewed "Journal of Geophysical Research."Another study this year by the Climate Research Unit in East Anglia, Great Britain, concluded that European summer heat waves "have increased in frequency at most stations since 1880" and will continue to increase with man-made global warming. In the current U.S. wave, more than 150 people have died. Feltgen ticks off a few statistics from the hardest-hit state, California:"One hundred twenty-six degrees in Death Valley last week; Sacramento had 11 days at or above 100 degrees, their old record was nine. We're seeing some impressive records out there to be sure and unfortunately this is taking a human toll."George Luber, an epidemiologist who studies heat wave deaths for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says the current situation is on track to be "the most active one that I can recall" in terms of heat deaths. A Primeval Tide of Toxins (VERY SERIOUS WARNING!!! MUST READ! BUT VERY DISCOURAGING!)
Runoff from modern life is feeding an explosion of primitive organisms. This "rise of slime," as one scientist calls it, is killing larger species and sickening people. (...) Even in modern times, when oil spills, chemical discharges and other industrial accidents heightened awareness of man's capacity to injure sea life, the damage was often regarded as temporary. But over time, the accumulation of environmental pressures has altered the basic chemistry of the seas. The causes are varied, but collectively they have made the ocean more hospitable to primitive organisms by putting too much food into the water. Industrial society is overdosing the oceans with basic nutrients - the nitrogen, carbon, iron and phosphorous compounds that curl out of smokestacks and tailpipes, wash into the sea from fertilized lawns and cropland, seep out of septic tanks and gush from sewer pipes. Modern industry and agriculture produce more fixed nitrogen - fertilizer, essentially - than all the Earth's natural processes. Million of tons of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide, produced by burning fossil fuels, enter the ocean every day. These pollutants feed excessive growth of harmful algae and bacteria. At the same time, overfishing and destruction of wetlands have diminished the competing sea life and natural buffers that once held the microbes and weeds in check. The consequences are evident worldwide. Off the coast of Sweden each summer, blooms of cyanobacteria turn the Baltic Sea into a stinking, yellow-brown slush that locals call "rhubarb soup." Dead fish bob in the surf. If people get too close, their eyes burn and they have trouble breathing. On the southern coast of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands, high tide leaves piles of green-brown algae that smell so foul condominium owners have hired a tractor driver to scrape them off the beach every morning. On Florida's Gulf Coast, residents complain that harmful algae blooms have become bigger, more frequent and longer-lasting. Toxins from these red tides have killed hundreds of sea mammals and caused emergency rooms to fill up with coastal residents suffering respiratory distress. North of Venice, Italy, a sticky mixture of algae and bacteria collects on the Adriatic Sea in spring and summer. This white mucus washes ashore, fouling beaches, or congeals into submerged blobs, some bigger than a person. Along the Spanish coast, jellyfish swarm so thick that nets are strung to protect swimmers from their sting. (...) Many of the same forces have wiped out 80% of the corals in the Caribbean, despoiled two-thirds of the estuaries in the United States and destroyed 75% of California's kelp forests, once prime habitat for fish. Jackson uses a homespun analogy to illustrate what is happening. The world's 6 billion inhabitants, he says, have failed to follow a homeowner's rule of thumb: Be careful what you dump in the swimming pool, and make sure the filter is working. "We're pushing the oceans back to the dawn of evolution," Jackson said, "a half-billion years ago when the oceans were ruled by jellyfish and bacteria." CLIP THIS IS ONLY PART 1. Sentinels Under Attack
Toxic algae that poison the brain have caused strandings and mass die-offs of marine mammals - barometers of the sea's health. These blooms of toxic algae are part of a worldwide pattern of oceanic changes that scientists attribute to warming waters, excessive fishing, and a torrent of nutrients unleashed by farming, deforestation and urban development.

Subject: Excerpt from the Satya Center newsletter and suggested meditation
This last week has been a time of incredible pain and suffering in the Middle East. Esoterically, the Middle East is the Earths solar plexus, and Jane and I have felt like we were punched in the gut as we reviewed the pictures of Lebanon: mass graves, bloodied children, bombed out buildings and bewildered families searching for shelter where there is no shelter to be found.
We have put together a thought-provoking and heart-opening compilation of stories about war and peace and the current moral and political crisis in America for you, written by Satya Center authors and by others around the World Wide Web.
This is another year of tribulations around the world. This is another year when we are called upon to stand up and speak out for peace.
In the face of the great war machines that support the repressive regimes, terrorists, religious fundamentalists, those who trample upon human rights and dignity and global corporations that threaten our precious planets environment, we must walk the way of the peaceful warrior, confronting power with truth and in peace.
For only through truth and peace can humanity prevail in grace and harmony with our only home, Planet Earth. Courage, faith and inner spiritual guidance are the prerequisites for this confrontation. To change the outside world, we must first change our inner world. To influence others minds, we must first change our inner view of reality.
We all have access to a source of wisdom within us so deep and so high that it transcends our everyday thoughts, fears, weaknesses and failings, providing us with unerring guidance, enlightenment and, yes, unfailing love for all beings, including the great powers that threaten humanity today.
By connecting with that inner source, listening to the small still voice within, and acting upon its promptings, we peaceful warriors will find our dark ways illuminated, our fears banished, our failings overcome. Turn within, seek this limitless source of strength and wisdom and love, and then act in the world accordingly.
The results will astonish you, and together, we will astonish the whole world.
We recommend that all participants spend a few minutes relaxing and centering themselves by experiencing a beautiful online multimedia [http://www.beliefnet.com/story/43/story_4371_1.html] peace meditation, inspired by the monk, author, and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh.
This Vietnamese Buddhist Zen master worked tirelessly for peace, especially during the Vietnam War. In 1967, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize. Thich Nhat Hanh argues that unless and until individuals are peaceful within themselves, they cannot work for peace among nations.
Next, light a candle or small lamp, and visualize the light from the candle spreading outwards from your home into the world, joining with the light from other candles being lit by others participating in this Peace meditation.
As Jane and I reviewed the images of death and destruction in Lebanon, we meditated upon our own personal responsibility for the present situation.
We are Americans. Americas global Empire provides billions of dollars a year to the Israeli military machine and Americas leaders have been using Israel as a surrogate to attack and control Islamic countries and peoples outside of the American sphere of influence for decades.
Americas leaders have launched a global war against Muslims, renouncing the most basic principles of international law and human rights, embracing the use of torture and engaging in the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians in Iraq. Americas Israeli allies are engaged in a carefully planned cold-blooded slow-motion ethnic cleansing in Palestine designed to reduce the indigenous Muslim population to the status of South African blacks during the infamous rule of apartheid. Now Israel has rendered 800,000 Lebanese civilians homeless, and the body count is literally unknown at present.
We are in the unpleasant position of being citizens of a rogue superpower, unable to personally stop the wars in the Middle East or alter the thrust of Americas current Imperialistic policies through our individual efforts.
We are not heroes. However, there is much that can be done on an individual level, and we are determined to do that much. It is not necessary to be heroes to be effective peacemakers. It is by joining our voices, our efforts and our heartfelt prayers to the voices and efforts and struggles and prayers of millions of other like-minded people that we will bring peace to the world. That is all that is required of us.
One of the first things we thought to do is to contribute to international relief efforts to help Lebanese refugees. The horrifying stories of Israeli bombs and missiles targeting Red Cross vehicles, destroying roads and preventing relief from reaching the Lebanese refuges have only strengthened our resolve to act now. This is a true humanitarian disaster. Donations from Americans will send a strong message to the worlds 3 billion Muslims that Americas citizens repudiate the illegal and genocidal conduct of America and Israel in the Iraq and Lebanon wars, and that American citizens stand in solidarity with their Muslim brothers and sisters in their time of need. This is the first step toward a dialogue that can heal the wounds of war-torn peoples and nations in the Middle East and around the world.

Subject: The war goes on. So do the anti-war demonstrations
International release, July 31
Day 20 of the Lebanon carnage
And more than a month since the tanks rolled into Gaza
We got up with the news of Condoleezza Rice at last putting down her foot (or at least, giving this impression on TV) and forcing a temporary halt to the systematic Israeli bombing of Lebanon's towns and villages. The declaration was made from Washington, after Israel's Defence Ministry agreed to announce it but failed to do so.
The halted bombings gave a respite also to the communities of Northern Israel, where those who had not run away had been living in bomb shelters for the past three weeks.
It was, of course, in the aftermath of yesterday's atrocity at Qana, the second mass killing perpetrated in the same unfortunate Lebanese village. What happened yesterday was just too big and too horrible to ignore, as the smaller daily killings of Lebanese civilians were ignored - with the images from Qana reverberating endlessly throughout the world, from every TV screen.
As reported in the morning papers, the generals were "greatly surprised" and highly displeased with the order to stop the bombing raids for at least the next 48 hours. As the day wore on, there were more and more bellicose pronouncements and declarations from ministers and generals: there is and will not be a ceasefire any time soon; the "regrettable" mass killing in Qana was the fault of the victims themselves "who were warned and did not run away"; ours was and remains "The Most Moral Army in World"; the ground offensive into Lebanon will not only be continued but will be greatly intensified; the air force is still authorized to assassinate Hizbullah militants "wherever they are found"; the air offensive will be soon resumed and inhabitants of South Lebanon are warned to run away today or be killed in the new bombings tomorrow; "maximum fire-power" should and would be used "in the most intensive way"... In the evening it culminated with the mock-Churchilesque televised speech of PM Olmert, complete with the promise of "pain, tears and blood".
The streets are still full of patriotic posters, most of them put up by banks and big corporations and bearing the promoter's logo beside the Israeli national flag and the stirring slogans "United We Will Win!", "Israel Is Strong!", "Everybody Embraces Our Soldiers!". But only a few citizens seem to have taken up the call to raise the national flag over their own homes and cars.
Meanwhile, at least many in the mainstream Left who in earlier days remained silent or outrightly supported the "Justified War Against Hizbullah Aggression" have been shocked or moved by the Qana carnage. Meretz leader Yossi Beilin has at long last came to the conclusion that the "continuation of the war is useless and counterproductive" and that it should come to an end. A few hours before he made this statement, a leader of the Meretz Youth declared her resignation, feeling "sick and tired of being involved in a peace movement which supports war". And a whole group of Meretz activists, led by former KM's Naomi Hazan and Yael Dayan, participated in yesterday's protest outside the Defence Ministry gates.
The influential dovish commentator Nahum Bar'nea wrote in today's "Yediot Aharonot": "Except for the lunatic fringe leftists, no one disputes that Israel had to react to the killing and kidnapping perpetrated by Hizbullah in our territory (...). I have confidence in the army's High Command, but having confidence does not stop me from having painful questions. Didn't the government, the army, the political system, the media, all let themselves be carried away by blind enthusiasm which serves only the enemy? I have heard Defence Minister Peretz boasting that he had "released the army from all restrictions" about harming "civilian populations which live at the side of Hizbullah militants". We saw the results of this "release" yesterday, with the bodies of women and children taken out of the house in Qana" (...)
So, there is every reason for the anti-war movement to continue and intensify its own "offensive". Demonstrations take place every day in various cities. Tonight at the basement of the Kibbutz Movement Headquarters - actually, not far from where the Inner Cabinet ministers met to approve a wide-scale extension of the ground invasion into Lebanon - Gush Shalom representatives took part in a coordinating meeting of the main peace groups, which resolved on holding a larger protest in the weekend.
The speeches of PM Olmert are full of bombastic cliches on "our heroic boys in uniform", but the 32-year old Reserve Captain Amir Fester was not convinced: he went to prison yesterday rather than obey the order to enter Lebanon. "He is not of the radical left, but in the last few days has been feeling more and more that the war is not justified" his girlfriend Nitzan Lahav told Yediot Aharonot. "The more the war continued he was increasingly troubled. In the beginning we like everybody supported the war, but we came to the conclusion that within two weeks there will anyway be an agreement with the Lebanese. So why not stop it now and end the killings?"

A note to those who missed our messages in the past week: in exactly this critical time, we were faced with the unfortunate combination of the health problems of some of our staff, the holiday of others (a holiday planned long since, with the assumption that "nothing special happens in July") and pesky computer problems which needed time and energy exactly when these were in short supply, and were spent more on organizing the actions than on reporting them.
We hope you found your way to the Gush Shalom website with the frequent war comments by Uri Avnery and where you also find a report of yesterday's demonstration and by scrolling down many earlier ones, and last but not least the text of the now daily little ads we have been publishing in Haaretz.

SHIN BET VETOED SECRET ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PEACE AGREEMENT
Israeli and Palestinian Sources Concur: Israel Made War Inevitable
The Omega Institute (OI), which works closely with the Institute for Policy Research for Development (IPRD), has learned from Israeli and Palestinian sources that just prior to the current crisis, senior Hamas leaders were in active dialogue with Israeli religious leaders in a round of bilateral peace negotiations. Israeli negotiators included Rabbi Menachem Froman, former deputy leader and co-founder of the Israeli Settler movement Gush Khatif; Rabbi David Bigman, head of the liberal religious Kibbutz movement Yeshiva at Ma'ale Gilboa; and Yitzhak Frankenthal, founder of the Arik Institute. Ongoing negotiations had resulted in a breakthrough peace "understanding", which was to be announced at a press conference in Jerusalem to mark the launching of an extraordinary peace initiative. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert had been briefed extensively about the initiative by Frankenthal. Also due to attend the conference were Khaled Abu Arafa, the Palestinian Cabinet Minister for Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhamed Abu Tir, senior Hamas Member of the Palestinian Parliament, and other senior Palestinian delegates.
The meeting was to announce a joint Israeli-Palestinian call for the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit who had been abducted by Hamas in Gaza, along with proposals for the beginning of the release of all Palestinian prisoners. These measures were to precipitate unprecedented new peace negotiations on a framework peace agreement, drawn on the 1967 borders. The presence of Palestinian Cabinet Officers and senior Israeli religious leaders in contact with the Prime Minster was to underline the seriousness of this peace proposal on both sides.
Just hours before the meeting was due to start, the Israeli Shin Bet internal Security Service arrested Abu Tir and Abu Arafa and warned them not to attend the meeting, under threats of detention. The meeting, which offered a major opportunity to obtain Shalit's release and launch a new framework for peace, was thrown into disarray. The next day, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) invaded Gaza, and the day after both Abu Tir and Abu Arafa were abducted by Israeli forces, along with a third of the Palestinian Cabinet, provoking a predictable escalation of violence.
Israel simultaneously began conducting covert incursions on to Lebanese territory, provoking Hizbollah's capture of two IDF soldiers. Credible sources confirm that the soldiers were not abducted on Israeli territory, but inside Lebanon. Like the scuppered peace negotiations, Western officials have ignored this, and misinformed the media. However, some reports corroborate the sources. Israeli officials, for instance, informed Forbes (12.7.06) that "Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel."
"The revelations show that Palestinian and Lebanese actors were not principally responsible for the escalation of the current conflict", said OI Director Graham Ennis. "Contrary to the misinformation disseminated by the Whitehouse and Whitehall, Israel vetoed unprecedented peace proposals that would have initiated a promising new framework for serious negotiations, and went on to provoke Palestinian and Lebanese groups into retaliations, that now threaten to escalate into a dangerous regional conflict."
What really happened when the Israeli soldiers were 'kidnapped'' (29 July 2006)
Hezbollah sources have an entirely different story about the incident that triggered the Israeli attack on Lebanon. The counter-story lends credence to the pre-meditated nature of a plan that was hatched in a three-way meeting between Dick Cheney, Binyamin Netanyahu, and Natan Sharansky at an American Enterprise Institute conference in Colorado last month.Hezbollah reports that on July 12, two Israeli Defense Force (IDF) troops were captured by Hezbollah after they entered Lebanese territory. Hezbollah put out feelers that they would entertain a prisoner swap, something that had occurred many times in the past. However, already looking for an incident on the Israeli-Lebanese border, the Israeli government dispatched a Merkava-2 tank into Lebanon to retrieve its two captured troops. The tank hit a land mine, killing four Israeli soldiers.Haaretz confirmed that the tank was destroyed by a mine and not in a Hezbollah attack. The neo-con spin machine, including George W. Bush, claims that Hezbollah entered Israel in an unprovoked attack and kidnapped the two Israelis.'Israeli-Lebanese border incident pre-planned by Cheney and his Israeli friends at AEI conference in Colorado. Subject: Target: Multilateralism
Date: 31 July 2006
Multilateralism took several hits this past week.
The most graphic was Israel's rocket attack on a UN monitoring post in Lebanon on July 25. The UN had complained to Hezbollah that guerrillas were launching missile attacks from positions close to the observation posts. But nothing could justify what happened next.
According to a preliminary UN report on the incident, the Israeli military ignored ten phone calls from the UN peacekeepers as they endured twenty Israeli artillery air strikes. "UN sources alleged yesterday that the Israeli military ignored the plea after it was passed up through the chain of command," according to a report in the British Telegraph. "A laser-guided munition is believed to have then dropped on the UN position, which is painted white and clearly illuminated. The four monitors inside from Canada, Austria, Finland, and China were killed."
After the attack, the United States blocked the UN Security Council from issuing a statement condemning Israel. But that didn't stop UN Secretary General Kofi Annan from being uncharacteristically blunt in his condemnation of Israel's attack. He issued another rebuke on July 30, after an Israeli attack on the Lebanese town of Qana killed 37 children among the 57 victims. After the bombing, the UN sustained another attack, when a group of outraged Lebanese ransacked the UN headquarters in Beirut. There were no injuries.
Prodded by the United States, Israel has declared a two-day pause in aerial bombardment of southern Lebanon, which falls substantially short of the immediate ceasefire that the world community has called for (and which only the United States, Israel, and Great Britain have opposed).
FPIF's Stephen Zunes, in an op-ed published in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel on July 22, points out that Israel's attempt to wipe out Hezbollah is not only quixotic but counter-productive, for it will, like the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, "create far more terrorists than it destroys." FPIF contributors Frida Berrigan and William Hartung provide some background on where Israel has been getting its arms$17 billion in U.S. military aid over the last decade, which works out to $2,000 in weaponry for every Israeli.

UK Govt Sources Confirm War With Iran Is On
by Nafeez Ahmed
In the last few days, I learned from a credible and informed source that a former senior Labour government Minister, who continues to be well-connected to British military and security officials, confirms that Britain and the United States "... will go to war with Iran before the end of the year."
As we now know from similar reporting prior to the invasion of Iraq, it's quite possible that the war planning may indeed change repeatedly, and the war may again be postponed. In any case, it's worth noting that the information from a former Labour Minister corroborates expert analyses suggesting that Israel, with US and British support, is deliberately escalating the cycle of retaliation to legitimize the imminent targeting of Iran before year's end. Let us remind ourselves, for instance, of US Vice President Cheney's assertions recorded on MSNBC over a year ago. He described Iran as being "right at the top of the list" of "rogue states". He continued: "One of the concerns people have is that Israel might do it without being asked... Given the fact that Iran has a stated policy that their objective is the destruction of Israel, the Israelis might well decide to act first, and let the rest of the world worry about cleaning up the diplomatic mess afterwards."
But the emphasis on Israel's pre-eminent role in a prospective assault on Iran is not accurate. [Not so sure about that - Ed.] Israel would rather play the role of a regional proxy force in a US-led campaign. "Despite the deteriorating security situation in Iraq, the Bush Administration has not reconsidered its basic long-range policy goal in the Middle East..." reports Seymour Hersh. He quotes a former high-level US intelligence official as follows:
This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush Administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, were going to have the Iranian campaign. Weve declared war and the bad guys, wherever they are, are the enemy. This is the last hurrahweve got four years, and want to come out of this saying we won the war on terrorism.
Are these just the fanatical pipedreams of the neoconservative faction currently occupying (literally) the White House?
Unfortunately, no. The Iraq War was one such fanatical pipedream in the late 1990s, one that Bush administration officials were eagerly ruminating over when they were actively and directly involved in the Project for a New American Century. But that particular pipedream is now a terrible, gruelling reality for the Iraqi people. Despite the glaring failures of US efforts in that country, there appears to be a serious inability to recognize the futility of attempting the same in Iran.
The Monterey Institute for International Studies already showed nearly two years ago in a detailed analysis that the likely consequences of a strike on Iran by the US, Israel, or both, would be a regional conflagaration that could quickly turn nuclear, and spiral out of control. US and Israeli planners are no doubt aware of what could happen. Such a catastrophe would have irreversible ramifications for the global political economy. Energy security would be in tatters, precipitating the activation of long-standing contingency plans to invade and occupy all the major resource-rich areas of the Middle East and elsewhere (see my book published by Clairview, Behind the War on Terror for references and discussion). Such action could itself trigger responses from other major powers with fundamental interests in maintaining their own access to regional energy supplies, such as Russia and particularly China, which has huge interests in Iran. Simultaneously, the dollar-economy would be seriously undermined, most likely facing imminent collapse in the context of such crises.
Which raises pertinent questions about why Britain, the US and Israel are contemplating such a scenario as a viable way of securing their interests.
A glimpse of an answer lies in the fact that the post-9/11 military geostrategy of the "War on Terror" does not spring from a position of power, but rather from entirely the opposite. The global system has been crumbling under the weight of its own unsustainability for many years now, and we are fast approaching the convergence of multiple crises that are already interacting fatally as I write. The peak of world oil production, of which the Bush administration is well aware, either has already just happened, or is very close to happening. It is a pivotal event that signals the end of the Oil Age, for all intents and purposes, with escalating demand placing increasing pressure on dwindling supplies. Half the world's oil reserves are, more or less, depleted, which means that it will be technologically, geophysically, increasingly difficult to extract conventional oil. I had a chat last week with some scientists from the Omega Institute in Brighton, directed by my colleague and friend Graham Ennis (scroll down about 2/3's to see Graham's letter published in The Independent), who told me eloquently and powerfully what I already knew, that while a number of climate "tipping-points" may or may not have yet been passed, we have about 10-15 years before the "tipping-point" is breached certainly and irreversibly. Breaching that point means plunging head-first into full-scale "climate catastrophe". Amidst this looming Armageddon of Nature, the dollar-denominated economy itself has been teetering on the edge of spiralling collapse for the last seven years or more. This is not idle speculation. A financial analyst as senior as Paul Volcker, Alan Greenspan's immediate predecessor as chairman of the Federal Reserve, recently confessed "that he thought there was a 75% chance of a currency crisis in the United States within five years."
There appears to have been a cold calculation made at senior levels within the Anglo-American policymaking establishment: that the system is dying, but the last remaining viable means of sustaining it remains a fundamentally military solution designed to reconfigure and rehabilitate the system to continue to meet the requirements of the interlocking circuits of military-corporate power and profit.
The highly respected US whistleblower, former RAND strategic analyst Daniel Ellsberg, who was Special Assistant to Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam conflict and became famous after leaking the Pentagon Papers, has already warned of his fears that in the event of:
"... another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country, detention camps for middle-easterners and their quote 'sympathizers', critics of the Presidents policy and essentially the wiping-out of the Bill of Rights."
So is that what all the "emergency preparedness" legislation, here in the UK as well as in the USA and in Europea, is all about? The US plans are bad enough, as Ellsberg notes, but the plans UK scene is hardly better, prompting The Guardian to describe the Civil Contingencies Bill (passed as an Act in 2004) as "the greatest threat to civil liberty that any parliament is ever likely to consider."
As global crises converge over the next few years, we the people are faced with an unprecedented opportunity to use the growing awareness of the inherent inhumanity and comprehensive destructiveness of the global imperial system to establish new, viable, sustainable and humane ways of living. Unfortunately, we have no other option. There is still light, however dim it may seem in this overwhelming smog of escalating calamity...
Iran: The Next War
"Even before the bombs fell on Baghdad, a group of senior Pentagon officials were plotting to invade another country. Their covert campaign once again relied on false intelligence and shady allies. But this time, the target was Iran," writes James Bamford.
Sadly, the Plural of "Fiasco" Requires No "E"
Ray McGovern writes, "The world desperately needs an "E" for EXIT from the march of folly toward a wider Middle East war that is increasingly likely to result from plural US foreign policy fiascos - in Iraq, Israel and Lebanon, for starters; in Syria and Iran for the next stage."
The call that tells you: run, you're about to lose your home and possessions
Conal Urquhart in Gaza City
July 28, 2006
The voice sounded friendly enough. "Hi, my name is Danny. I'm an officer in Israeli military intelligence. In one hour we will blow up your house."
Mohammed Deeb took the telephone call seriously and told his family and neighbours to get out of the building. An hour later, an Israeli helicopter fired three missiles at the four-storey building in Gaza City, destroying the ground floor and damaging the upper storeys.
Mr Deeb was on the receiving end of a new Israeli tactic of using telephone, radio and leaflets to warn Gazans of impending attacks. The army claims it is an attempt to minimise civilian casualties, but Palestinians say it is a new way of terrorising the population.
Raji Serrani, the director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), which has collected several examples of the tactic, described it as "psychological warfare", adding: "Since when did Israel feel the need to warn people that they were about to bomb their homes? They are simply playing with people's minds and inflicting a new panic in Gaza."
The family of Ibrahim Mahmoud in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza were ordered to leave their home by an Israeli intelligence officer. The officer called back one hour later to say she had made a mistake. She ended her call to Mr Mahmoud by telling him to "be safe", he told the Associated Press.
The warnings, which sometimes are followed by an Israeli attack and sometimes not, are happening as Israel continues its latest invasion of the Gaza Strip. Four people were killed and dozens injured yesterday as Israeli tanks patrolled residential areas to the east of Gaza City. Twenty-five people were killed on Wednesday.
Fears that Israel will destroy homes are widespread: 900 residents of the al Nader towers, a complex of 12 apartment blocks in the north of Gaza, fled on Tuesday after 10 Israeli shells landed close to them, killing three residents. According to the PCHR, Israel had also informed Palestinian police that they planned to demolish the towers.
Izzat al Jamal, 38, a Palestinian policeman, moved his wife and eight children out of their apartment to emergency accommodation in a local school. "When they started firing, it was clear it was aimed directly at us and it wasn't a random mistake. I had to leave for the children's sake. I haven't been paid in four months and now I don't even have a home."
Hundreds of families have also moved out of the east of Gaza City in the al Shaaf and al Tuffah suburbs after Israeli tanks took up position on Wednesday. Two tanks were visible on hills above the suburbs and many more could be heard shooting and moving in the narrow streets.
Scores of Palestinian fighters armed with rifles attempted to approach the tanks, which - supported by drones and helicopters - fired shells and machine guns throughout yesterday. At Shifa Hospital, the ambulances lined up to deliver the injured and crowds of men waited to take away the dead.
Dr Jumah Sakkah said the hospital had taken in 16 injured people and two had died. The death toll later rose to four. He said that all of the injured were non-combatants.
'You go a bit crazy when you see little body after little body coming up out of the ground' (August 2, 2006) HEART-WRENCHING!
Huge numbers of children are being killed, injured or displaced in south Lebanon. Why are so many suffering in this conflict?(...) Then another child was pulled from under the rubble, and another followed, and then another. You go a little crazy when you see little body after little body coming up out of the ground. I looked around me and all I could see in the house was the detritus of their short lives - big plastic bags filled with clothes, milk cans, plastic toys and a baby carriage.By three in the afternoon, when the corpse of a one-year-old boy was pulled from the rubble, he looked more like a mud statue than a child. The medics held him high above their heads, clear of the rubble. The faces of the rescue workers said everything that needed to be said. What is obvious to everyone covering this conflict is that children are bearing the brunt of it. The few official figures collated so far seem to support this. Unicef says that 37 of the 60 dead in Qana on Sunday were children, and everywhere you go, it seems that it is the children who are being killed, injured and displaced. Yesterday the Lebanese government said that of the 828 of its civilians killed in the conflict so far, around 35% have been children - that's around 290. Unicef also estimates that about a third of the dead have been children, although it bases that figure on the fact that an estimated 30% of Lebanon's population are children, rather than any actual count of the dead. There are no official figures yet for the number of wounded children, but they will certainly exceed the number killed; as for those displaced, Unicef says that 45% of the estimated 900,000 Lebanese to have fled their homes are children. Palestinians Open Checkpoint by Laying down on Settler Road
by Ali Omar and Raad (ISM network)
Today, July 26th, at 5pm, the IOF closed Yesthar checkpoint (west of Nablus) in all directions for all Palestinian and settlers passing on the road. They re-opened it at 7pm for just the settlers, while there were dozens of Palestinians waiting to go back to their homes.
Previously the road was only for settler use, but was opened for Palestinians in 2004 after it was closed since the beginning of the Intifada.
Opening the checkpoint just for the settlers made the Palestinians very angry and they responded by having a completely non-violent direct action by lying down on the road and closing it with their bodies. The army responded with excessive violence by beating the people and throwing sound grenades at the crowd. This violence wasn't helpful to evacuate the crowd who continued chanting songs of the Intifada and refusing to move.
After the failure of the IOF troops to open the way for the settlers who were stuck waiting, the settlers began threatening the Palestinians with their machine guns, waving them at their faces. The soldiers did nothing to stop the settler's threats.
The army failed to evacuate the Palestinians who occupied the checkpoint from 7pm until 9pm and so the army was forced to open the checkpoint for all.

Casualties of War: Lebanons Trees, Air and Sea
By HASSAN M. FATTAH
JIYEH, Lebanon, July 28 As Israel continues the bombing campaign that has turned parts of Lebanon into rubble, environmentalists are warning of widespread and lasting damage.
Spilled and burning oil, along with forest fires, toxic waste flows and growing garbage heaps have gone from nuisances to threats to people and wildlife, they say, marring a country traditionally known for its clean air and scenic greenery. Many of Lebanons once pristine beaches and much of its coastline have been coated with a thick sludge that threatens marine life.
As smoke billowed overhead on Friday, turning day into dusk, Ali Saeed, a resident, recounted how war has changed this small industrial town about 15 miles south of Beirut.
Most people have left, he said. It is virtually impossible to drive on the roads, and almost everyone hides behind sealed windows.
Theres nowhere to run, Mr. Saeed said, showing off the black speckles on his skin that have turned everything white here into gray. Its dripping fuel from the sky.
A large oil spill and fire caused by Israeli bombing have sent an oil slick traveling up the coast of Lebanon to Syria, threatening to become the worst environmental disaster in the countrys history and engulfing this town in smoke.
The escalating Israeli attacks on Lebanon did not only kill its civilians and destroy its infrastructure, but they are also annihilating its environment, warned Green Line, a Lebanese environmental group, in a statement issued Thursday. This is one of the worst environmental crises in Lebanese history.
The most significant damage has come from airstrikes on an oil storage depot at the edge of Jiyeh on July 13 and 15. Oil spewed into the Mediterranean Sea and a fire erupted that has been burning ever since.
Four of the plants six oil storage containers have burned completely, spilling at least 10,000 tons of thick fuel oil into the sea initially, and possibly up to 15,000 more in the weeks since. A fifth tank burst into flames on Thursday, residents said, adding to a smoke cloud that has spewed soot and debris miles away. The fire is so hot that it has melted rail cars into blobs and turned the sand below into glass.
Engineers are concerned that a sixth tank still untouched by the fire could soon explode, making the situation even graver.
The prevailing winds and currents have swept the oil northward up the coast of Lebanon, and on Friday it reached the coast of Syria, Environment Ministry officials said.
You cant swim in the water anymore, its all black, Mr. Saeed said. This is like the Exxon Valdez spill in America, he said, speaking of the environmental damage caused when a tanker ran aground and spilled about 40,000 tons of oil into Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1989.
Lebanons coast is an important nesting ground for the green sea turtle, an endangered species, as well as a spawning ground for some Mediterranean fish. Turtle eggs begin hatching in July, but with the oil slick coating most of the area, baby turtles will have a far smaller chance of making it to deeper waters and surviving, environmentalists say. The oil slick is also threatening bluefin tuna that migrate to the eastern Mediterranean this time of year.
The Environment Ministry sent crews to various parts of the country this week to assess the damage and begin the cleanup, a spokeswoman said. But the oil slick has quickly proven beyond the governments limited capacity to deal with the problem.
The ministry estimates cleanup alone will cost upwards of $200 million, a major sum in a country with a gross domestic product of around $21 billion, but experts warn the bill could run even higher.
Jordan has offered to send experts to provide technical assistance, and Kuwait has pledged to send material and equipment to help clean up the spill.
Brush fires in many parts of the country have been an equally pressing concern as they rage unabated. Firefighters and forestry workers cannot move around for fear of being targets, and resources are being used to help refugees.
In Israel there are planes taking care of forest fires, but in Lebanon these fires are not being extinguished or even noticed because our priorities have shifted from the environment to relief and humanitarian work, said Mounir Abou Ghanem, director general of the Association for Forest Development and Conservation in Beirut.
Much of the budget for environmental protection and development has been sacrificed for relief work, he said. The oil spills, he said, will eventually be cleaned up and solid waste will be collected and disposed of when the war is over, but the forests are irreplaceable.
In the end, who cares if a forest is on fire when there are people dying, others are being displaced and their houses or factories are on fire? he said.
Water pollution has become an issue, too, said Karim el-Jisr, senior associate at Ecodit, a nongovernmental environmental association. Wastewater and freshwater canals are very close together and the many bombs that have hit roads and other infrastructure have damaged them. As a result, Mr. Jisr said, wastewater is contaminating the freshwater supply, especially in rural areas, causing further environmental degradation.
But experts warn that the real environmental impact of the war will not be clear until the fighting ends.
This war will affect the soil and the air, said Hala Ashour, the director of Green Line, the environmental group. But its still too early to assess the actual damage because we have to analyze samples and that cant be done before the war is over.
In Jiyeh, Mr. Saeed and the few other remaining residents have begun learning to live with the pollution. Within the first few days of the oil fire, Mr. Saeed said, they wore masks to breathe; now, he said, they are used to it.
Maher Ali, 24, a fisherman, said: When the winds blow north, its bearable, but when it blows east, its deadly. The soot lands on the food and furniture and makes everything dirty. You just cant leave a glass of water sitting around. Its no wonder most families have given up and left.
Nada Bakri contributed reporting from Beirut for this article.
Environmental 'crisis' in Lebanon (July 31)
The United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) has expressed its "grave concern" about oil pollution in Lebanese coastal waters. An oil slick caused by Israeli bombing of the Jiyyeh power station now covers 80km (50 miles) of coast. Local environmental groups describe the slick as an "environmental disaster".Almost as much oil may have entered the water as during the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker incident in Alaska, which led to widespread ecological damage. The UN and other international organisations are assisting the Lebanese government as it attempts to contain thousands of tonnes of oil. (...) The incident began with Israeli raids on the Jiyyeh power utility 30km (19 miles) south of Beirut between 13 and 15 July. Initial reports indicated that 10,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil had escaped from damaged tanks, but the eventual total could be 35,000 tonnes. By comparison, spillage from the Exxon Valdez accident totalled just under 40,000 tonnes of crude oil. CLIP

End of Days?
The Army's budgetary squeeze raises questions about whether the United States can 'stay the course' in Iraq-even if Washington wants to.
By Michael Hirsh - Newsweek
July 31, 2006 - Perhaps the most truthful moment about Iraq came recently when a U.S. official said nothing at all. This occurred when Army Chief of Staff Peter Schoomaker was asked at a Capitol Hill luncheon in mid-July whether the United States was "winning" in Iraq. Several agonizing seconds passed before a grimacing Schoomaker finally replied: "I don't think we're losing." One of the most eloquent pauses in recent memory, it gave voice to the U.S. military's most deep-seated fears not only about Iraq, but about America's entire strategic position in the Mideast.
The general's honesty has not made Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld happy, military officials tell NEWSWEEK. The temperamental Rumsfeld erupted at Schoomaker after the general revealed the Army's lack of readiness in painful detail to the House Armed Services Committee. "I remain concerned about the serious demands we face," Schoomaker said in asking Congress for $17 billion in an emergency appropriation. The ranking Democrat member of that committee, Rep. Ike Skelton, cited Schoomaker's blunt honesty in a letter he wrote to President Bush last week. "When I asked General Schoomaker in recent testimony if he was comfortable with the readiness level for the non-deployed units located within the continental United States, he simply answered no," said Skelton. Equipment like tanks and Humvees are badly worn down after three years in the sand and heat, and the Army is cannibalizing units still based in the United States. It is also asking soldiers to prepare for third overseas deployments in a row, which many fear could trigger an exodus of professionals.
The Army's budgetary squeeze raises questions about whether the United States can "stay the course" in Iraq even if it wants to. While the world has focused on Lebanon, Iraq has been sliding downhill fast. U.S. officials battling the counterinsurgency who were positive six months ago are now far more skeptical that the center can hold.
The evidence of those fears emerged last week when President Bush announced that 3,700 U.S. troops--the 172nd Stryker Brigade--would be shifted to Baghdad from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The move reflects genuine concern in Washington about the stability of the weak government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki--even whether the secure Green Zone that houses the new Iraqi government and U.S. officials can hold, according to a Pentagon official would speak to the media only if he were not quoted by name. "It's now the yellow zone, not the Green Zone," says Andrew Krepinevich, the Washington-based defense expert whose "oil spot" plan for securing Baghdad has now been adopted by the Pentagon. Some experts point to the valedictory act of the late Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi--the bombing of the Shiite Al-Askari mosque in Samarra in February--as the turning point that sent Iraq into out-of-control sectarian violence.
One U.S. Army officer who is working on police and military training in Iraq, when asked about the prospect of a collapse of the Maliki government, responded in an email: "There's a Maliki government? Since when?" He went on: "Ultimately, I think the deterioration of the Baghdad security situation gives the lie to the U.S. effort. We've stood up X Iraqi army battalions and Y Iraqi police stations, and yet, Baghdad (and much of the contested provinces like Diyala and Anbar) continues to get worse."
Officials worry that behind the Army's lack of readiness lies a titanic mismatch between the Bush administration's dream of resurrecting American prestige in the region through the use of hard power and the scant resources they have devoted to it. Bush's entire approach to solving the terror problem after 9/11 was based on the perceived need to reassert American power in the Arab world, after what was seen as decades of flabbiness dating back to the killing of Marines in Lebanon in the early '80s and the hurried U.S. withdrawal that resulted. As Ron Suskind writes in his new book, "The One Percent Doctrine," quoting sources who attended National Security Council briefings in 2002, the main reason for the Iraq war was "'to make an example"' of Saddam Hussein. Bush sought to ''create a demonstration model to guide the behavior of anyone with the temerity to acquire destructive weapons or, in any way, flout the authority of the United States.''
This squares with what others heard as well. When NEWSWEEK asked a member of Rumsfeld's Defense Policy Board in late 2001 why the administration should take on Saddam, who was unconnected to 9/11, he responded: "How do you send the message of strength as Ronald Reagan sent it, that we don't allow these things--you inflict damage. We didn't do anything after the [attack on the] USS Cole. There's a feeling we've got to do something that counts--and bombing some caves is not something that counts." Behind this lay the view that Arabs respond to force. Some Bush officials also liked to quote Osama bin Laden himself when he said, "When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature they will like a strong horse."
For Bush and Rumsfeld, the key to a successful anti-terror policy lay in being seen as the "strong horse." As Rumsfeld said at his confirmation hearings in 2001: "We don't want to fight wars. We want to prevent them. We want to be so powerful and so forward looking that it is clear to others that they ought not to be damaging their neighbors when it affects our interests, and they ought not to be doing things that are imposing threats and dangers to us."
Now Rumsfeld and Bush, by pre-emptively launching a war, have undercut that lesson. Until recent events, the American and Israeli armies were generally judged the most advanced in the world. In the Arab world they were seen as all but invulnerable. Today the failures of those armies against Islamist guerrillas in Iraq and Lebanon have conveyed the very opposite of the message Bush wanted to send. If the current situation continues, with America bogged down in Iraq and Israel mired in its fight against Hizbullah, then the presumption of U.S-Israeli military invincibility--which has kept Arab extremists in place for decades--will be exposed as a myth. That could embolden Islamist radicals for a long time to come. Unless he is prepared to spend a lot more on his military, defense analysts say, the president who so badly wanted to project strength will be remembered mainly for projecting weakness.
25,000 stateside troops tapped for Iraq deployment (July 28)
ARLINGTON, Va. Despite hopes for a drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq this year, the number of U.S. troops in country is going up amid rising sectarian violence in Baghdad. As part of the next rotation to Iraq, 25,000 stateside troops have been tapped to deploy, and 3,500 members of an Army brigade that has been in Iraq for about a year were told their stays have been extended by up to 120 days, according to the Defense Department. With the extension, the number of brigades in Iraq has increased from 15 to 16, bringing the number of U.S. troops in that country from about 127,000 to about 132,000, officials said. mUltimately, the number of U.S. troops in Iraq is expected to be between 130,000 and 135,000, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman on Friday. Acid waters, dissolving shellfish
New research shows fossil fuels pose a deadly threat to coral reefs and marine life
Until now, concern about rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been focused on global warming. But scientists have discovered a second reason to worry: About half of the greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels -- an amount weighing about the same as 140 billion Volkswagen Beetles -- has ultimately ended up in the world's oceans.
While this has the beneficial effect of slowing down the rate at which the planet's atmosphere is heating up, ocean researchers have found that the huge influx of carbon dioxide since 1800 is making oceans more acidic than they have been for millions of years. If not reversed, this trend could destabilize -- or even threaten --much of the world's marine life, particularly animals that can't adapt to living in a more corrosive environment.
So far, the ocean's pH (the commonly used scale of whether something is acidic or alkaline) has become about 30 per cent more acidic over the past 200 years because humans have added so much carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Scientists say this change has never occurred in the recent history of the planet -- either in such a massive way, or so quickly.
"The pH changes that are occurring in the ocean today are truly extraordinary," says Joan Kleypas, a scientist at the U.S. National Centre for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., and the lead author of a report issued this month that rang alarm bells about the trend. "Unfortunately, this is not an environmental problem that we've had to deal with in the past, and so we really don't have a very good grasp of what this means for ocean biology."
Although experts don't yet have a thorough understanding of all the implications of a more acidic ocean, they do know it has scary potential for all creatures that secrete calcium carbonate to build shells or skeletons, including corals, starfish, snails and many microscopic varieties of plankton. Should nothing be done to stop global warming, scientists predict that oceans could become acidic enough that the shells or skeletons of the most vulnerable marine animals may start to dissolve, possibly as early as 2050.
This is a particular worry for coral reefs, which are viewed as the ocean's rain forests because of their amazing biological diversity. "What we're finding is that [acidification] decreases their ability to build their skeletons," says Chris Langdon, a coral-reef expert at the University of Miami. "We think this is important because one of the sure outcomes of this is going to be the loss of coral-reef framework around the world."
About 25 per cent of all ocean species spend at least part of their life cycle on reefs. But in a more acidic ocean, corals will grow more slowly and become less dense -- a process like osteoporosis in humans -- and won't be able to grow fast enough to offset erosion from wave action. Corals are also under threat of bleaching from rising water temperatures.
The reason that oceans are becoming acidic is that carbon dioxide is water-soluble and easily passes from the air into the sea. Most of the carbon in the ocean is in the form of bicarbonate, a familiar ingredient in household baking soda.
What is happening in the oceans is the reverse of the common high-school experiment in which vinegar, an acid, is poured on baking soda to produce a fizzy mass of carbon dioxide air bubbles. In this case, the ocean is holding the "baking soda," which is reacting with the influx of carbon dioxide to produce an acid.
Although there is intense debate about the impact that global warming will have on land, scientists say there is absolutely none about the alteration in ocean chemistry under way. And the impacts from a more acidic ocean will not reverse quickly, either. Even if all carbon dioxide emissions from human sources cease, experts believe it will take hundreds of thousands of years for ocean pH to return to normal levels.
Oceans at high latitudes, such as the Antarctic, Arctic and the Northern Pacific off of British Columbia, are more vulnerable to the trend than tropical oceans, and the Pacific Ocean is more vulnerable than the Atlantic. This is because the Pacific has what is considered older water, or water that has been submerged longer in deep currents. This allows it to absorb more carbon dioxide from the decay of organic matter. New concerns over ocean acidification will be flagged in the report expected next year from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body amassing all scientific knowledge on global warming.

Heatwave shuts down nuclear power plants
Juliette Jowit and Javier Espinoza
July 30, 2006
The European heatwave has forced nuclear power plants to reduce or halt production. The weather, blamed for deaths and disruption across much of the continent, has caused dramatic rises in the temperature of rivers used to cool the reactors, raising fears of mass deaths for fish and other wildlife.
Spain shut down the Santa Maria de Garona reactor on the River Ebro, one of the country's eight nuclear plants which generate a fifth of its national electricity. Reactors in Germany are reported to have cut output, and others in Germany and France have been given special permits to dump hot water into rivers to avoid power failures. France, where nuclear power provides more than three quarters of electricity, has also imported power to prevent shortages.
The problems have come to light just weeks after Britain declared it will build a new generation of nuclear power stations, prompting opponents to claim the crisis proved nuclear reactors - although they emit no carbon dioxide greenhouse gases - are not the solution to the problem of global warming.
'The main problem they have is: How are they going to expand nuclear power when they are so vulnerable to such things as global temperature?' said Shaun Burnie, Greenpeace International's nuclear specialist.
But Bruno Comby, president of Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy, said future power stations could have bigger cooling towers, or be built near the sea. 'The big problem the earth is facing today is global warming, it's not a one-degree local increase in [the temperature of] a river,' he added.
The heatwave in Britain appeared to break last week, with the Met Office forecasting more normal summer weather this week. Today London and south-east England face a repeat of last week's heavy rains; for the rest of the week the country is expected to alternate between sunny spells, with warm temperatures and showers.
However, hotter weather is set to return. 'We could be looking at some very warm weather coming back towards next weekend,' said meteorologist Andrew Sibley.
Last week a series of power cuts in central London prompted fears of regular blackouts as global temperatures are predicted to keep rising, bringing more long, hot summers. EDF, the capital's main electricity supplier, said the problems were caused by a 'very unusual' combination of several faults and huge demand for air-conditioning.
'Over the weekend, our engineers are working round the clock to maintain power supplies to the area and avoid any further interruptions,' a company official said.
Network Rail, the main rail infrastructure operator, said fewer speed restrictions were expected in cooler temperatures, although track temperatures can rise to 20C above the air temperature on hot days.

Bush - Stoned? Drunk? Medicated? Retarded? Presidential Tester for the Pharmaceutical Industry? You Decide...
by Ruth Lopez
Bush is fried. He's either drinking, smoking pot, medicated, or some combination of all of them. [http://houseoflabor.tpmcafe.com/blog/joseph_hughes/2006/jul/18/our_dumb_president] Either that or the man has taken a one-way trip to crazy town.
Watch his gibberish at the G8, especially the bizarre stuff about how long the plane flights to various countries are. If you take out the comments of the other leaders (because they actually sound intelligent and not like drunken bar talk) and just read what Bush says, he sounds just like someone who is more than half looped.
"Gotta go home. Gotta do sumthin tonight. Get ona plane. Go home. It's a long flight. How long is your flight? That's a long flight. Your country is big. His country is big too." Retarded or stoned, you decide.
This is the kind of mindless bar drivel that drunks who can't shut up drone on with. They just keep running their mouths, totally disconnected from the non-verbal clues of the people around them.
Watch the press conference where Bush couldn't stop talking about the pig roast. It didn't matter what anyone asked him, he just kept saying whatever his addled brain was looping on, in this case, the pig. Typical stoned behavior. It reminded me of the time Bush went to Canada and couldn't get off the subject of the mouth one of the Canadian Prime Minister's staff members! "You've got a purty mouth." Not once but several times. "You've sure got a purty mouth." And, "Your mouth is prettier than my Scott's mouth." (The poor guy's name was Scott.) Who does this? Outside of bars or institutions, I mean.
Watch Bush's body language at the table with Blair talking over his shoulder. Bush is sitting, almost slouched back in his chair, like a guy at a barbeque on his second or third 6 pack, chomping on his food with his mouth open, and making minimal effort to intelligently keep up his end of the conversation by occasionally throwing in something he mistakenly thinks is sufficient.
Watch the body language of the other leaders and the way they react to him. With the exception of Blair, they act very restrained and controlled around Bush, maintaining a public facade of geniality while holding back from actually being engaged with him. What seems to be obsequiousness from Blair may actually be him simply trying to get through the fog around Bush's brain to penetrate with a little reality without setting him off. Meanwhile, Bush's social modus operandi with everyone, including other world leaders, is to overuse forced jocularity and pretend intimacy to convey a relationship that does not exist.
When he walked up behind the German leader and started giving her an unsolicited shoulder massage, her body tightened up and she actually grimaced. She wasn't enjoying that, she was enduring it. Before that Bush can be seen wandering aimlessly around the room while the rest of the grown-ups were conducting the business they were there for.
This is not normal behavior. Watch him closely sometime when he's having trouble staying coherent and you can see his eyes come in and out of focus. He does it at the table when Blair is speaking to him and he's looking out across the room as he chomps open-mouthed on his food. This is a distinct change from Bush's speech and behavior at other times. In fact, radical variations in his behavior and speech can be seen by watching him when he is unscripted. Sometimes he's coherent, other times he looks like staying coherent long enough to get a sentence out is almost beyond him, (these are the times he seems to get mean-drunk angry when anyone dares to question him), and sometimes he is just off-the-wall bizarre.
I'll say it again; the man is plastered, stoned, or medicated. This goes a long way to explaining how he is so incredibly disengaged from war, disasters and their destructive effects: he is too out of it to relate. Drunks and addicts are incapable of empathy, everything is about them and their next high. When Cheney shot that guy, Bush acted like he had just found out about it days after it happened. Same with New Orleans. Bodies were rotting in the ruins of the city, when Bush had been warned that it could, and likely would happen, happen, and Bush's response was to reminisce about partying.
There are bizarre internet rumors of a personal portable toilet for Bush to use when overseas, (to prevent foreign analysis of his excrement) [http://www.rense.com/general72/fexc.htm]. Normally I would blow them off as some of the wilder of conspiracy theories, but watching Bush's actions over the last week, I can't help but wonder, to what lengths would they go to hide it if it were true? If he is too incapacitated?
What would they do to keep up the appearance of his functionality? Who could or would step up and do anything about it if he is unfit to serve? The people around him are not people willing to part with the power they have granted themselves, and that's an understatement. And with Bush at the top of the chain and out of the loop, or just plain looped, who is holding anybody below him accountable? His staff? Congress and the Media have abdicated their responsibilities, who will do it?
Hell, they're all trying to give him, and therefore themselves, even more unlimited power than they have already taken. As long as they can keep up the illusion that he's functioning.........you decide.
There are LOTS of feedbacks at http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/contributors/312 including this one which I found interesting...
Yes, I noticed his actions
Submitted by Lucidity on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 2:06pm.
Yes, I noticed his actions during the G8 and blogged it too on a few occasions. His first comments from G8 when Israel attacked Lebanon were horrible...they only showed it on the networks "live" once...when they cut the feed the anchors on CNN sat there in silence. It was like...whoa. They never showed it again. That was not the worst either, as we later saw. Most of his speeches from the G8 were squashed...no video around, barely a transcript. His comments about killing innocents sounded like he doesn't think that applies to him (what over 100,000 Iraqis dead now, few of them his boogeyman "terrists"). Dude was definately off his rocker or on something in both Germany and at G8...the pigs, the language, the groping, the blubbering, the blundering...he looked like a madman...crazy hair and all. He's sure seems drunk, stoned, or medicated or else his guilty conscience over what he has done to America, the murders in the Middle East...maybe worried about something to the point that he's overcompensating with inanity. His actions are rather similar to the My Pet Goat incident on the morning of 9/11. That glazed look. He probably knows exactly what Israel is doing. Their plan A...picking on Iran in front of the world about nukes they don't have...failed due to Ahmadinejad's brilliant chess playing and stalling (backed of course by his good buds in the SCO) so they've gone to plan B...attacking Palestine and Lebanon to implicate Syrian and Iran. One shudders what plan C is. Something horrific, no doubt, as Israel and America get impatient. Just a guess.

Peace prize winner 'could kill' Bush
July 25, 2006
NOBEL peace laureate Betty Williams displayed a flash of her feisty Irish spirit yesterday, lashing out at US President George W.Bush during a speech to hundreds of schoolchildren.
Campaigning on the rights of young people at the Earth Dialogues forum, being held in Brisbane, Ms Williams spoke passionately about the deaths of innocent children during wartime, particularly in the Middle East, and lambasted Mr Bush.
"I have a very hard time with this word 'non-violence', because I don't believe that I am non-violent," said Ms Williams, 64.
"Right now, I would love to kill George Bush." Her young audience at the Brisbane City Hall clapped and cheered.
"I don't know how I ever got a Nobel Peace Prize, because when I see children die the anger in me is just beyond belief. It's our duty as human beings, whatever age we are, to become the protectors of human life."
Ms Williams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 30 years ago, when she circulated a petition to end violence in Northern Ireland after witnessing British soldiers shoot dead an IRA member who was driving a car. He veered on to the footpath, killing two children from one family instantly and fatally injuring a third.
Ms Williams's petition had tens of thousands of Protestant and Catholic women walking the streets together in protest. Now the former office receptionist heads the World Centres of Compassion for Children International, a non-profit group working to create a political voice for children.
"My job is to tell you their stories," Ms Williams said of a recent trip to Iraq.
"We went to a hospital where there were 200 children; they were beautiful, all of them, but they had cancers that the doctors couldn't even recognise. From the first Gulf War, the mothers' wombs were infected.
"As I was leaving the hospital, I said to the doctor, 'How many of these babies do you think are going to live?'
"He looked me straight in the eye and said, 'None, not one'. They needed five different kinds of medication to treat the cancers that the children had, and the embargoes laid on by the United States and the United Nations only allowed them three."
Wrapping up the three-day forum yesterday, delegates agreed to a 26-point action plan.
"There can be no sustainable peace while the majority of the world's population lives in poverty," they said.
"There can be no sustainable peace if we fail to rise to the global challenge presented by climate change.
"There can be no sustainable peace while military spending takes precedence over human development."
Subject: Shifts - Solar - Early Sept?
Date: 29 July 2006
From: "Alex Kochkin - FFGA" email@example.com>
Hope you are well my friend!
I have been in touch with Gwen as well as Cliff and Igor (halfpasthuman HPH I have been receiving their period linguistic forecasts.)
All three of us are picking up something at least two things in common:
1: Early Sept 2006 + 2: solar energies + 3: significant new shifts in reality-consciousness --(to broadly interpret our commonalities).
HPH and Gwen both are seeing this shift in the first week September perhaps as narrowly as August 31 to September 2
Gwen and HPH graphs share at least four things in common : 1: the date/time period of these changes, 2: the general behavior of their curves ; and 3: lunar cycles as their common time-base; and 4: both track changes of emotive qualities of humanity
[NOTE from Jean: To view Gwens graph go at http://www.gwelan.com/vibes2006eng/etat-du-jour.php (explore also the rest of his site to better understand this whole thing. HPH graph is avilable to paid subscribers only.]
Gwen tracks near-real-time changes in the Earth as medium blue, the moon in pale blue, the sun in gold-yellow. The orange-gold line is a forecast and Gwens graph shows a dramatic change building up to around Sept 1. The trough portion of HPH is around Sept 2 each of their respective systems indicates this as for significant shifts/changes that can influence many facets of humanity.
Additionally , I have seen material from three others who are more astrologically-oriented who also detect major change events occurring in this narrow time frame of early Sept.
Years ago when I began paying close attention to the various solar energies that scientists track using various satellite data, I found three distinct types of reactions to each of three general classes of radiation that the space scientists report: Intense x-ray levels, M-class energies, and geomagnetic storms. The first coincided with a thinning of the perceived densities of material reality and people who were not quite in synch with this suffered headaches as the higher energies hit against various bio-energetic sticking points in them. Intense M-class triggered migraines with majority of people who we know who are so predisposed; geomagnetic storms caused general emotional upsets and were generally unpleasant in their effects on interpersonal relationships. This is not a scientific analysis on my part, but nevertheless has help true in my informal tracking among 10-20 people and what report as well as the qualities of their own interactions. Also, over the course of one year and half, our research director plotted these against his own severe migraines = high statistical correlation.
Perhaps HPHs solar madness and Gwens intense vibration ramp-up are closely related and portend more dramatic bifurcations to manifest in social-material reality-constructs. I have been seeing various bifurcations in the human evolutionary streams. Perhaps this will be the first significant shift to play out globally. This could be good news for Plan-A
could all these be indicators of the greater energies of Light that are incoming? A gift from higher realms, given through our Sun to help catalyze global awakening? I would like to think so. Feels right to me. Humanity sure needs a much need nudge to look beyond the immediate box/matrix/etc. that constitutes its temporary imprisonment.
When I first became aware of the New Earth-Old-Earth scenario around 1995, Plan-A was preferred: a sufficiently strong global awakening to better facilitate the transformation of the human species and of Earth in a more controlled, gentle manner. (This encouraged us to start FFGA and our outreach work.) An alternate Plan-B was next in line: an increasing rate of change in our physical environment leading to more and more radical atmospheric/solar/geophysical/tectonic changes that would rapidly force alterations in the course of human consciousness and choices that would require regaining the use of free-will. Since Plan B would be perceived more as an "act of God" humans would be less likely to war against one another over escalating crises, rather they would be forced to cooperate more. The fallback Plan-C was the more rapid "roll-up" of 3-D Earthly reality structures/matrix leading to a more rapid clearing of the planet and a more immediate basis of the re-starting of human society with a more consciousness and several variants/lifestyles (that I was aware of at least. (Of course there more specific variations on these themes but I wont go in to that here.)
We seem to be somewhere between Plan A and Plan B. Plan C is still there, and being in held in abeyance (or so it seems to me). Your comments on this?
(I am noting here that HPH is interpreting one important aspect of significant rise in the conflict entity in their system as conflict between humans and their Earth/environment.)
As you know, I continue to maintain my vote from a few years ago that the potential outcome for humanity is still worth the risks of an intervention and rescue. Nevertheless, I am concerned that the various forces of Light are cutting it a little too close.
What do you make of all this? Also, you might ask some of your sources to comment on the topic of significant changes both around this Aug 31-early Sept period, as well 2006 in general.
Best to you

NOTE from Jean: Anyone with insights as to what could be the meaning of these off the chart measurements peaking at the beginning of September is welcomed to share them with Alex Kochkin firstname.lastname@example.org>, Gwen N'Diaye email@example.com> and me (I may include your comments in a future compilation unless you request me to not share them with all). I also found the following interesting scientific forecast on the next sun spots cycle which is supposed to peak big time in 2012...
Solar madness! The sun could go wild in next sunspot cycle!
Yes, folks, it's true. The National Science Foundation released its forecast for the next solar cycle, and it's quite an eye-popper:Scientists Issue Unprecedented Forecast of Next Sunspot Cycle:The next sunspot cycle will be 30 to 50 percent stronger than the last one, and begin as much as a year late, according to a breakthrough forecast using a computer model of solar dynamics developed by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo. The research results, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA, were published on-line on March 3 in the American Geophysical Union journal Geophysical Research Letters.Scientists now predict that the next cycle, known as Cycle 24, will produce sunspots across an area slightly larger than 2.5 percent of the visible surface of the Sun. The cycle is projected to reach its peak about 2012, one year later than indicated by alternative forecasting methods that rely on statistics. CLIP

Subject: Space ships, again
As usual I'm very grateful for what you do, and am always impressed at your very wonderful way of putting things into words. I'm also impressed that you can read so much difficult information and keep your balance well enough to do such inspiring writing Thank you.
Since I've been occasionally sending you space ship experience information, I thought it appropriate, after I read your very large section on it with this week's meditation focus. to share an experience of mine a week ago last Friday, July 21. I'm very reluctant to share with anyone in conversations that I've been visiting space ships for several years for healing sessions, and just general get acquainted visits. I know there are many of us, but I don't have contact with them, and am interested in sharing with some others who might wish to.
Here is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Elora of The Return of Light, with whom I've been corresponding, followed by a paragraph from the journals I wrote this morning:
There have been some very good experiences this week which I would love to share. I somehow or other got carried away during my physical therapy appointment Friday. I couldn't believe I was doing it, yet I was compelled to keep talking, and that was about space ship experiences and visits, something which I rarely mention to anyone. I know we are being guided to tell people and prepare them as much as we can but I've been pretty reserved about it. This stuff just kept coming out. It was all new to my physical therapist, but she was open. After I left my appointment and was sitting in my car eating a snack, I looked out my car window right at an incredible cloud formation right over me. It was more like a crop circle than a cloud formation. At the bottom center of it was a spiral, with the cloud line actually ending in a firmly edged comma shape in the inside of the empty circle. Above the circle, and moving away from it was the shape of a horn of plenty, as if the empty circle was the horn of plenty opening, except it was a spiral in the opening instead of being filled with food Only a ship could have done this. Surrounding it in all directions were what I call the lines of ruffled or perforated cloud bits that are left from the ship's energy moving through. It was quite astounding. I didn't have a camera with me, unfortunately. At the time, after I realized this couldn't possibly be a natural formation, I thought it might be a sign, but I think now I was directed by someone on the ship, which was already in the area, or maybe looking for opportunities to send information through someone, and I was given this as a sign of appreciation. Sounds egotistical, but I think they're needing to communicate as much as possible through those of us they can reach. Anyway, it was all very moving. The light energy of this has stayed with me.
And from my journals: July 31...
Since I've spent a little bit of time drawing and playing with crayons lately, I've begun having the desire to do some pencil drawing, but I can only find one sharpened pencil, and I don't know where my pencil sharpener is. So last night I took out my crayons with the hope of using some different colors than in the first drawings and I took grays and olive green and a blue out of the box. I picked the gray and began drawing back and forth semi-circles, and when I had done some down the page I saw that it was like the horn of plenty shape I'd seen in the sky, and had done a pencil sketch of afterwards. I completed it as I had seen it, and turned to a clean page to do a variation with color. As I was doing the first one I was reminded of Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters, when he couldn't stop drawing the mountain in Wyoming. During the second one I felt some Light floating down on my head that felt soft and lovely, like Love-Light flakes. I think it must have have been an acknowledgement, and I enjoyed it. I wonder if this is the beginning of some kind of communication.
Maybe someone has something similar happening in their lives. I'd love to hear about it.
With great appreciation,
