The Moment of Truth Series #6: Rays of Hope Despite Great Difficulties

Hello everyone

As some of you already know, Dennis Kucinich has announced on December 12 his candidacy to the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States. If the members of the Liberal Party of Canada could pick Stéphane Dion as their leader for the next elections in Canada, why would the Democrats not pick such an outspoken, articulate advocate of peace, social justice and environment protection as their—and, rightfully so, our—leader to win the next US election and set America back on the path to a viable, much brighter future?...

He is the true spokesperson of all those who believe in the highest spiritual values humans can embody and, as such, fully deserves our total support, no matter what the uncertainties over the final outcome, because if we don't support one who truly speaks for us and for all people of goodwill, one who is not under the control of any occult interests, but who freely speaks his mind and soul as no other politician has ever done before, then who will?

I recommend you take 15 minutes to listen to him in this video Announcement of Candidacy or read his announcement speech, and of course there is much more on his site at media reactions including KUCINICH IS BAAAAAAAAACK, and read Rep. Kucinich: Why I’m Running for President below, and pay special attention to his most inspiring three imperatives for his campaign.

Fred Burks made today this relevant comment about the biased media coverage of Kucinich's campaign in 2004: "Coverage of the occasional successes of Dennis Kucinich in the 2004 Democratic primary campaign were clearly suppressed. When Kucinich took second place in Hawaii with 26% of the vote, almost twice the 14% of John Edwards, most major media gave Edwards name, but didn't even mention Kucinich, saying only that a "third candidate" took second place. The media seem not to like anti-war candidates." This note was part of his latest "Revealing News" summaries available at http://www.WantToKnow.info/061213newsarticles

Over 400 print media in the US and around the world have covered his announcement today. Let's hope he will continue to get the coverage he deserves throughout this 2-year long presidential campaign.

Much more below as usual on a great variety of topics

THE QUOTES

"Sometimes, you are mostly in your own sphere, feeling your own feelings. However, a large part of the time, the feelings and energies of other people wash into your sphere to some degree. The amount varies from person to person. Some are designed to attract the energies of others so as to offer healing to them. This is often true of those who are highly sensitive--the sensitivity is part of that design. It can be overwhelming before it is mastered. The spiritual path is about discovering your own power to transform whatever is in your space, whether it is just your own energies or those of humanity as a whole--the mass consciousness--or, most frequently, something in between. Regardless, since you are an inseparable part of the whole, the work you do within your own sphere has an impact on the whole. Not only do other energies wash in, but yours wash out. As you impact those energies with love, truth, and beauty, you offer healing to the whole."

"Never before in the history of our country have the crimes of an Administration been so blatant and so clear. The way to end this war is to remove our money and our troops from Iraq! Not by a draft that feeds the war machine. And the way to end this Administration is with an impeachment bill. According to a non-partisan national poll, 50% of Americans agree with the following statement: "If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable by impeaching him."

— Cynthia McKinney at the World Can’t Wait teach-in at George Washington University.

This generation too has a rendezvous with destiny. While we do face the very real threat of "Islamofascism" abroad, we must first confront the immediate threat of "not-seeism" at home -- that is where people conveniently choose to "not see" their own participation in evil. The new "rendezvous with destiny" is about finally accepting the mantle from our Founding Fathers and becoming the citizens this system was designed for. Inspired by the Iroquois Confederation, Jefferson et al proposed something unheard of up until that time: That rightful government springs from the needs and consent of the governed, not something imposed from the top down by a monarchy, an oligarchy or a dictator-in-chief. But here's the problem. There is no one "up there" to secure this rightful government. By definition, if government is something we the people create for our protection and mutual-benefit, then we must be the leaders we‚ve been waiting for. Sixty years ago, it took an outside authority imposed on an unconditionally-defeated enemy to bring Nazi war criminals to justice. Our tradition demands that we do the same, but from the inside out and from the grassroots up. What is required is no less than a bloodless evolution, where the unarmed (and unharmed) forces prevail, and only a few "big shots" are fired. We the people -- not the Democratic Party -- bear the responsibility for firing these big shots. By doing this, we set an object example for the rest of the world. Instead of forcing ‘mockracy’ (imperial rule with mock participation) on captive states, we magnetize the hearts and minds of the world by facing our own shadow. There's that old Biblical saying, "To whom much is given, much will be required." For those of us who landed on these shores by conscious choice or accident of birth, we now have the awesome responsibility of "living into" the notions of freedom and self-governance that have reverberated here since the Iroquois Nation first created their confederacy more than five hundred years ago. This will not be accomplished necessarily by marching or by protesting. It will be moved forward by standing up and speaking up, by calmly, lovingly and even playfully dismantling the "invisible" beliefs that keep the current insanity in place. There is indeed a battle going on, and that battle is to recapture our consciousness from the forces of fear, and awaken ourselves and our fellow (and gal) citizens from the trance of passive acceptance of evil. That is our rendezvous with destiny. No great society, no great progressive programs, nothing of value can be built on a foundation of lies. The truth shall (up)set us free, so let us weave a web of awakening.”

"On October 25th, President Bush cited oil as a reason for our continued presence in Iraq. The Iraq study group is recommending Iraq law be changed to facilitate privatization of Iraq's oil wealth. The Iraq Study Group report says as much as 500,000 barrels per day -- that is $11.3 billion per year -- in Iraqi oil wealth is now being stolen, which is interesting, since the Ministry of Oil is the first place our troops were sent after the invasion of Iraq and we now have 140,000 troops there. How can we expect the end of the Iraq war and national reconciliation in Iraq, while we advocate that Iraq's oil wealth by handled by private oil companies? It is ironic that this report comes at the exact time the Interior Department's Inspector General says that oil companies are cheating the US out of billions of dollars while the Administration looks the other way. Is it possible that Secretary Baker has a conflict of interest, which should have precluded him from co-chairing a study group whose final report promotes privatization of Iraq oil assets, given his ties to the oil industry? Is it possible that our troops are dying for the profits of private oil companies?"

— Dennis Kucinich speaking from the Floor of the House, last Dec 7, 2006 -- Taken from http://kucinich.us/node/602

"Of the many tragedies in Iraq, the massive rise in Iraqi deaths -- there's not good enough attention in the United States. We are rapidly approaching the grave number of 3,000 dead U.S. service members. But as painful as that is -- and it's very painful -- the estimated 650,000 deaths attributed to hostilities in Iraq is an overwhelming number to comprehend. While it is natural and appropriate for Americans to first focus upon the deaths of American service members in Iraq, it's astounding to consider that for every service member killed, 200 Iraq civilians have been killed. According to the United Nations, the population of Iraq was 25 million in 2003, and we have now learned that since then, an estimated 650,000 have perished to violence. Now, if such a rate of violence were to be inflicted against the U.S., we would have lost about 7.8 million Americans. Such a level of violence is unimaginable, but this is the level of violence that the civilians in Iraq are subjected to. Consider the massive psychological impact the 9/11 attacks and resulting deaths have had on our nation. Imagine the impact we'd feel as a nation if, over a period of three years, 7.8 million of our citizens died in ongoing, uncontrollable violence. Consider the political impact of violence at that scale. Are we closer to a stable transition in Iraq, or are we closer to collapse? How would we react if this was happening here?"

— Dennis Kucinish -- Taken from Kucinich-Paul Congressional Hearing on Civilian Casualties in Iraq (Dec 13, 2006)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes. In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows."

— Major General Smedley Butler -- Taken from his book "WAR is a racket" written before World War II.

Apocalypse of Coercion: Why We Listen to What “They” Say About 9/11
http://mujca.com/apocalypse.htm
Summary: “Apocalypse of Coercion” uses Douglas Rushkoff’s landmark book Coercion as a touchstone for understanding 9/11 as a psychological warfare operation. Rushkoff’s well-researched insights into the mind-control techniques of car salesmen, spin doctors, cult leaders, and CIA psych-war specialists explain how 9/11 was designed as a war-triggering “New Pearl Harbor.” These insights also explain why so many people can continue to believe the official myth of 9/11 in the teeth of the overwhelming evidence against it. Perhaps most importantly, Rushkoff predicts that new communications technologies promise to put an explosive end to the era of pervasive coercion. His prophecy of the coming apocalyptic end of coercion explains why the coercers were desperate enough to try to re-infantalize the public through 9/11 in order to maintain the old coercive structures of social control. In predicting doom for the coercers, Rushkoff provides us with a roadmap to a post-9/11-truth world. CLIPs

NOTE: The magazine Atlantis Rising currently has an article on this "Serpo Project"... http://www.atlantisrising.com/ (...) twelve astronauts left the earth in July of 1965, and were taken to the planet Serpo in the constellation Zeta Reticuli aboard an alien spaceship, as part of an exchange program. (...) The twelve courageous astronauts boarded the Eben craft along with 40 tons of supplies, for an intended stay of ten years. Four of them would never see Mother Earth again. Two would die, and two would choose to remain on Serpo. The others would not return until thirteen years later. (...) The trip to Serpo took ten months, during which the astronauts experienced considerable discomfort. (...) The team commander’s account of the landing is vivid. “We see the planet for the first time. We walk down the ramp. Large number of Ebens waiting for us. We see a large Eben, largest one we have seen yet...I guess this guy is the leader. About one foot taller than the others. The leader tells us we are welcome to planet... we are lead (sic) to an open arena. Looks like a parade field. The ground is dirt. Looking up, I see blue skies. The sky is very clear. We see two suns. One brighter than the other. The landscape looks like a desert, Arizona or New Mexico. No vegetation that we can see. There are rolling hills but nothing but dirt... The brightness is almost too much for our eyes without sunglasses. What a planet.” They were quartered in four huts that appeared to be adobe-like, and all their gear was stored in an underground facility. The temperature was 107. CLIP

Hear stories involving elected officials, UFO researchers, and former base employees, some of whom are going on the record regarding "Hangar 18." They spin a tale of flying saucer debris, alien bodies, cryogenic chambers and a vast underground network that may hold the secrets to the UFO mystery. Is there a conspiracy to hide UFO evidence from the highest branches in the U.S. Government, or is it all just a myth?

Hunger Facts: Every day in the developing world, 30,100 children die from mostly preventable and treatable causes such as diarrhea, acute respiratory infections or malaria. Malnutrition is associated with over half of those deaths. More than 800 million people in the world are malnourished -- 777 million of them are from the developing world. 177 million of them are children. The Army and Marine Corps are planning to ask incoming Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Congress to approve permanent increases in personnel, as senior officials in both services assert that the nation's global military strategy has outstripped their resources. In addition, the Army will press hard for "full access" to the 346,000-strong Army National Guard and the 196,000-strong Army Reserves by asking Gates to take the politically sensitive step of easing the Pentagon restrictions on the frequency and duration of involuntary call-ups for reservists, according to two senior Army officials. The push for more ground troops comes as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have sharply decreased the readiness of Army and Marine Corps units rotating back to the United States, compromising the ability of U.S. ground forces to respond to other potential conflicts around the world. "The Army has configured itself to sustain the effort in Iraq and, to a lesser degree, in Afghanistan. Beyond that, you've got some problems," said one of the senior Army officials. "Right now, the strategy exceeds the capability of the Army and Marines." Former U.S. Senator: Support for Israel in Congress is Based on Fear (December 11, 2006)
http://justice2007.blogspot.com/2006/12/former-us-senator-support-for-israel-in.html
I can tell you from personal experience that the support Israel has in the Congress is based completely on political fear -- fear of defeat by anyone who does not do what Israel wants done. I can also tell you that very few members of Congress -- at least when I served there -- have any affection for Israel or for its Lobby. What they have is contempt, but it is silenced by fear of being found out exactly how they feel. I've heard too many cloakroom conversations in which members of the Senate will voice their bitter feelings about how they're pushed around by the Lobby to think otherwise. In private one hears the dislike of Israel and the tactics of the Lobby, but not one of them is willing to risk the Lobby's animosity by making their feelings public. Thus, I see no desire on the part of Members of Congress to further any U.S. imperial dreams by using Israel as their pit bull. The only exceptions to that rule are the feelings of Jewish members, whom, I believe, are sincere in their efforts to keep U.S. money flowing to Israel. But that minority does not a U.S. imperial policy make.Secondly, the Lobby is quite clear in its efforts to suppress any congressional dissent from the policy of complete support for Israel which might hurt annual appropriations. Even one voice is attacked, as I was, on grounds that if Congress is completely silent on the issue, the press will have no one to quote, which effectively silences the press as well. Any journalists or editors who step out of line are quickly brought under control by well organized economic pressure against the newspaper caught sinning. I once made a trip through the Middle East, taking with me a reporter friend who wrote for Knight-Ridder newspapers. He was writing honestly about what he saw with respect to the Palestinians and other countries bordering on Israel. The St. Paul Pioneer press executives received threats from several of their large advertisers that their advertising would be terminated if they continued publishing the journalist's articles. It's a lesson quickly learned by those who controlled the paper. CLIP

Can you say that this is the same level, when they are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel and Russia?" CLIP

Bush to Sign India Nuclear Deal Into Law on Monday

President George W. Bush will sign into law on Monday a civil nuclear cooperation deal that allows the United States to sell nuclear technology to India. Some in Congress say the legislation, which helps clear the way for India to buy US nuclear reactors and fuel, will undermine efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons.

At a time when the United States is trying to convince Iran and North Korea to abandon their nuclear weapons program, we should not be expanding our own. But building more nuclear bombs is exactly what the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) plans to do! The NNSA has proposed an expensive, dangerous, and unnecessary overhaul of the current nuclear complex, called Complex 2030. This overhaul would give the U.S. the ability to produce up to 125 nuclear weapons per year - a level comparable to Cold War levels - and would cost an exorbitant $150 billion. Contrary to its stated aim of downsizing the nuclear weapons infrastructure, the plan is a Trojan horse that would give the U.S. the ability to produce nuclear bombs indefinitely. The U.S. government is considering comments from the public, only up until January 17, 2007. Oppose the plan to build more nuclear bombs. Tell the nuclear decision makers what you think! NOTE: So far (Dec 13, 2006), only 6,125 people have signed this petition. If you are a US citizens, it is important that you sign this now please. Recommended by EdElkin@aol.com

Despite the mainstream media's sound and fury, many analysts say the Iraq Study Group report has little to do with leaving Iraq any time soon. World's wealth gap grows; poorest half has 1% of assets (Dec 5)

London - The richest 2 percent of adults still own more than half of the world's household wealth, perpetuating a yawning global gap between rich and poor, according to research published Tuesday. The report from the Helsinki-based World Institute for Development Economics Research shows that in 2000 the richest 1 percent of adults - most of whom live in Europe or the United States - owned 40 percent of global assets. The richest 10 percent of adults accounted for 85 percent of assets, the report said.By contrast, the bottom 50 percent of the world's adult population owned barely 1 percent of the world's wealth."Income inequality has been rising for the past 20 to 25 years, and we think that is true for inequality in the distribution of wealth," said James Davies, a professor of economics at the University of Western Ontario, one of the report's authors. But Davies said there are some hopeful signs: China and India, which are developing rapidly, are gaining wealth, and in countries such as Bangladesh, the spread of microcredit institutions is helping people increase their personal wealth, he said.In other countries, land-registration programs allow the poor to own land for the first time, he said.

US terror watchlist 80,000 names long: report (8 Dec 2005) THIS WAS A YEAR AGO! IMAGINE NOW...

STOCKHOLM - A watchlist of possible terror suspects distributed by the US government to airlines for pre-flight checks is now 80,000 names long, a Swedish newspaper reported on Thursday, citing European air industry sources. The classified list, which carried just 16 names before the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington had grown to 1,000 by the end of 2001, to 40,000 a year later and now stands at 80,000, Svenska Dagbladet reported. Airlines must check each passenger flying to a US destination against the list, and contact the US Department of Homeland Security for further investigation if there is a matching name. The list contains a strict "no fly" section, which requires airline staff to contact police, and a "selectee" section, which requires passengers to undergo further security checks.

Government Spying Goes Global
http://www.alternet.org/story/45285
The government is tracking your transactions to help find terror suspects -- a move that makes about as much sense as assigning guilt based on Google keyword searches. The story which broke last week about a traveler risk scoring system called the Automated Targeting System, or "ATS," evokes an image of an Orwellian world in which the State compiles a secret dossier on every individual and sorts the population according to secret criteria, assigning each person a "risk score." The individual has no recourse to challenge his risk rating, and he has no way of correcting any false or incomplete information about him. In fact, he will never know what information is being used against him, or even the criteria on which he has been judged a risk to the State. It is a disturbing image, and the fact that the government has been conducting the ATS program in secret for four years has shocked many people. However, the ATS is hardly a surprise to those who have been keeping track of similar programs. (...) Welcome to the national insecurity state, where our virtual identities are continually assessed for the risk we pose to the state and the normal relationship between the individual and the state in democratic societies is turned on its head. Now, the individual answers to the state and woe betide the person who is branded with a high "risk score."

Oil producing countries have reduced their exposure to the dollar to the lowest level in two years and shifted oil income into euros, yen and sterling, according to new data from the Bank for International Settlements. The revelation in the latest BIS quarterly review, published on Monday, confirms market speculation about a move out of dollars and could put new pressure on the ailing US currency.Market liquidity is traditionally low in December, and many traders have locked in profits, potentially reinforcing volatility. Russia and the members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, the oil cartel, cut their dollar holdings from 67 per cent in the first quarter to 65 per cent in the second. Meanwhile, they increased their holdings of euros from 20 to 22 per cent, the BIS said. The speed of the shift may help to explain the weakness of the dollar, which recently fell to a 20-month low against the euro and a 14-year low against sterling. CLIP

Terror attack over Christmas 'highly likely', warns Reid (Dec 10, ,2006)

A terrorist atrocity in the UK over the Christmas period is 'highly likely', John Reid claimed yesterday. The Home Secretary warned that the threat of attacks by Islamic extremists in the coming weeks was 'very high indeed', with 30 'major' conspiracies currently being monitored by the security services. But Dr Reid faced immediate criticism from opposition figures who accused him of giving out just enough information to cause widespread fear, without any meaningful attempt to involve or educate the public in helping to prevent or cope with terror attacks. The row came as it emerged that the Foreign Office has urged Government ministers to stop using the phrase 'war on terror' - coined by US President George Bush following the September 11 attacks - claiming it risked angering British Muslims and raising tensions worldwide. John Reid used a television interview yesterday to stress the high likelihood of a Christmas season terror strike, and said the Government's current official assessment was of a 'severe' threat, one grade down from the highest 'critical' level. (...) Mr Mercer also voiced concerns that ministers are using repeated warnings of impending attacks partly to 'soften up' public opinion for the introduction of more sweeping counter-terrorism powers, including another attempt to introduce 90-day detention without charge for suspects in terrorist cases. Climate Change Catching Voter Attention Around World (Dec 12, 2006)
http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/121306EA.shtml
Berlin - "It's the environment, stupid!" Just as Bill Clinton used the battle cry "It's the economy, stupid!" to keep his 1992 presidential campaign focused, political leaders worldwide are chanting a new mantra based on growing alarm about global warming. Mainstream parties in Germany, Britain, France, Canada, the United States and Austria believe tackling climate change is a vote winner while established Green parties in Germany and Austria are experiencing a renaissance. Arnold Schwarzenegger won re-election as California governor in a landslide last month after distancing himself from President George W. Bush, a fellow Republican, and championing measures to cut the state's greenhouse gas emissions. In Britain, Tony Blair and his probable successor Gordon Brown have made the fight against climate change a priority and the leader of the pro-business Conservative Party, David Cameron, has won over voters by talking up environmental issues. "Climate change, if presented the right way, is a topic that voters are definitely opening up to," Manfred Guellner, managing director of Germany's Forsa polling institute, told Reuters. "We're seeing you can score points with it. "Blair has done a good job of showing how leadership on climate change can make a difference. Climate change clearly has 'hot button' potential." In France, the need for sustainable policies has been embraced by all parties ahead of a 2007 presidential election. Socialist candidate Segolene Royal and her likely rival Nicolas Sarkozy pepper speeches with references to the environment. In early December, Sarkozy met former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, whose documentary on global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth", has been a surprise box-office winner. Sarkozy said concern about the environment was not the preserve of traditional green parties. "Sustainable development and the defence of the environment is a question so fundamental that it can't be the property of one political party, even if it's green in colour," the front-runner for ruling conservative UMP party told parliament. This month, Canada's opposition Liberals elected former environment minister Stephane Dion as their leader. Dion campaigned on green issues and said he would focus on the need to cut emissions from the booming Alberta oil area. It was the first time a major Canadian party had picked a leader who campaigned primarily on the environment. CLIP

Cross-party support grows for simultaneous action on climate change (Dec 12)
http://www.simpol.org/dossiers/dossier-UK/html-UK/how_do_i_adopt_sp-UK.html
The fear of competitive disadvantage is rapidly being recognised as the key barrier to solving global warming and many other global problems. In the wake of the Stern report which urged all governments to act decisively to curb carbon emissions, the Financial Times (6th Dec. 06) noted that "governments remain reluctant to address this threat because any country acting alone to curb its greenhouse gas emissions, without similar commitments by other governments, risks damaging the competitiveness of its industries." As David Milliband, UK environment minister, confirmed: "There is a collective action problem internationally." Recognising the inability of governments to act, citizens around the world are adopting SP as a way to seize the political initiative and to drive even uncooperative governments towards the internationally co-operative solution that SP provides. Apart from the UK, support for SP extends to the EU and Australian parliaments and progress is being made in many other countries. SP is also supported by the prime minister of East Timor, Dr. José Ramos-Horta, by Eva Quistorp, co-founder of the German Green Party, and by many ecologists, activists and economists.

Climate Change is Killing the Oceans' Microscopic 'Lungs' (December 7. 2006)
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/1207-03.htm
Global warming has begun to change the way microscopic plant life in the oceans absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere - a trend that could lead to a dramatic increase in the heating power of the greenhouse effect. This NASA Aqua satellite image released in 2003 shows clouds of phytoplankton thriving in the cold, nutrient-rich waters off of Greenland's eastern coast. A new study of the oceans suggests that phytoplankton -- the vital first link in the food chain of the seas -- will be hugely affected by global warming. (AFP/NASA-HO/File)Satellite data gathered over the past 10 years has shown for the first time that the growth of marine phytoplankton - the basis of the entire ocean food chain - is being adversely affected by rising sea temperatures. Scientists have found that as the oceans become warmer, they are less able to support the phytoplankton that have been an important influence on moderating climate change. The fear is that as sea temperatures continue to rise as a result of global warming, the loss of phytoplankton will lead to a positive-feedback cycle, where increases in carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere leads to warmer oceans, and warmer oceans lead to increasing carbon dioxide concentrations. A team of American scientists used a Nasa satellite to study global concentrations of phytoplankton over the past two decades to see how ocean productivity - as measured by the density of chlorophyll, the pigment of photosynthesis - changes with sea temperatures. The result was a clear link between warmer oceans and decreases in ocean productivity. (...) Phytoplankton needs nutrients and sunlight to grow and in warmer, tropical oceans, the levels of nutrients become the limiting factor because there are few "upwelling" currents from the sea bed to bring nitrogen, phosphorus and iron to the surface layers. In tropical seas, the water forms layers, with warm water sitting on top of cooler water. When seawater becomes layered or stratified in this way, nutrients are prevented from rising to the surface where the phytoplankton live. This is why cooler oceans at higher latitudes in the north and south are more productive than tropical oceans near the equator.Global warming is having the effect of extending the range of nutrient-poor regions of the ocean to include areas that were richer in phytoplankton "blooms" on which all other marine life depends.Despite their small size, phytoplankton account for about half of the photosynthesis carried out by all plants on Earth. And phytoplankton have a high turnover because they are quickly eaten by small marine animals - making them even more vulnerable to climate change. CLIP

BEIJING - A rare, nearly blind white dolphin that survived for millions of years is effectively extinct, an international expedition declared Wednesday after ending a fruitless six-week search of its Yangtze River habitat. The baiji would be the first large aquatic mammal driven to extinction since hunting and overfishing killed off the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s.For the baiji, the culprit was a degraded habitat — busy ship traffic, which confounds the sonar the dolphin uses to find food, and overfishing and pollution in the Yangtze waters of eastern China, the expedition said."The baiji is functionally extinct. We might have missed one or two animals but it won't survive in the wild," said August Pfluger, a Swiss economist turned naturalist who helped put together the expedition. "We are all incredibly sad."The baiji dates back 20 million years. Chinese called it the "goddess of the Yangtze." Sir Richard DollSir Richard Doll, the celebrated epidemiologist who established that smoking causes lung cancer, was receiving a consultancy fee of $1,500 a day in the mid-1980s from Monsanto, then a major chemical company and now better known for its GM crops business. While he was being paid by Monsanto, Sir Richard wrote to a royal Australian commission investigating the potential cancer-causing properties of Agent Orange, made by Monsanto and used by the US in the Vietnam war. Sir Richard said there was no evidence that the chemical caused cancer.Documents seen by the Guardian reveal that Sir Richard was also paid a £15,000 fee by the Chemical Manufacturers Association and two other major companies, Dow Chemicals and ICI, for a review that largely cleared vinyl chloride, used in plastics, of any link with cancers apart from liver cancer - a conclusion with which the World Health Organisation disagrees. Sir Richard's review was used by the manufacturers' trade association to defend the chemical for more than a decade. The revelations will dismay scientists and other admirers of Sir Richard's pioneering work and fuel a rift between the majority who support his view that the evidence shows cancer is a product of modern lifestyles and those environmentalists who argue that chemicals and pollution must be to blame for soaring cancer rates. The Sugar Association believes Splenda's advertising is misleading.False Splenda advertising infuriates sugar makers who believe that the popular sugar replacement is not natural and made with toxic chemicals such as chlorine. The Sugar Association believes Splenda's advertising is misleading and is continuing its efforts to have it removed from the marketplace."Bottom line, Splenda is made with a chloro-hydrocarbon sucralose, and bulking agents. The final product does not contain sugar. It's not natural," Sugar Association President Andy Briscoe told reporters. The Sugar Association has filed a lawsuit in California against the makers of Splenda and sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission outlining the deceptive practices by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil Nutritionals. However, Splenda insists that the sweetening ingredient, sucralose, is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener suitable even for pregnant women, children and people with diabetes. 75% OF AMERICANS DON'T KNOW THEY'RE EATING GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS
http://www.organicconsumers.org/2006/article_3554.cfm
The fifth annual survey on U.S. consumers' opinions of genetically engineered foods was released last week by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology. In accordance with past years, the survey results indicated that most Americans have very little knowledge about how widespread genetically engineered ingredients are in foods. Surprisingly, the survey found that the average person's knowledge of these issues has actually declined in the last five years. Although 89% of soybeans and 61% of corn acreage in the U.S. is currently genetically engineered (and soy lecithin and corn syrup are found in a myriad of mainstream food products), 75% of people don't think they've ever eaten a food with genetically engineered ingredients. The survey also found that 51% of those polled are opposed to animal cloning. Only 29% said they trust the FDA, which is a strong drop from 41% in 2001.

Rep. Kucinich: Why I’m Running for President

Dec 12, 2006

By Joshua Scheer

The six-term Ohio congressman and 2004 presidential candidate, who has been one of Congress’ most vocal and longstanding opponents of the Iraq war, tells Truthdig why he again has his sights set on the Oval Office:

Rep. Kucinch spoke with Truthdig research editor Joshua Scheer.

TRUTHDIG: What made you decide to run?

KUCINICH: Someone has to rally the American people, to let them know that the money is there right now to bring our troops home. Democrats were put in power in November to chart a new direction in Iraq. It’s inconceivable that having been given the constitutional responsibility to guide the fortunes of America in a new direction, that Democratic leaders would respond by supporting the administration’s call for up to $160 billion in new funding for the war in Iraq.

For me this is a call of conscience to stand up and speak out about what’s going on—to let the American people know that the money is there to bring our troops home now, that we need to begin now to take a new direction in Iraq, and that to pass a supplemental in the spring for another $160 billion would keep the war going until the end of George Bush’s term. Someone needs to stand up and speak out, and I decided it was my responsibility as the person who has been consistently opposed to this war since its inception, who has been a leader in challenging this thinking that led to war, that I would stand up and rally Democrats to change the course that the party has embarked on with respect to continued funding of the war.

TRUTHDIG: This is obviously your major issue, but what other issues are you going to base your campaign on?

KUCINICH: We have to take these things in sequence. From now until the spring, this is the issue: $160 billion is more than three times what the federal education budget is. This is a huge amount of money, and all the other hopes we have as Democrats to create a new agenda for the American people in housing, in healthcare, in education, are going to be destroyed by the administration’s request for $160 billion.

So does that mean I’m a one-issue candidate? Of course not. I’m prepared to lead this country forward to create a universal, single-payer, not-for-profit healthcare system. I’m prepared to lead the way towards policies of environmental sustainability, to develop advanced technologies for alternative energy, for clean energy.

This campaign is about three imperatives: It’s about the imperative of human unity, of recognizing that this is one world, that we are all one, that people all around the world have an underlying connection, that we are interconnected and interdependent. And we need policies that act that interconnection. We need to affirm institutions which support the idea of human unity. And that means that we support the United Nations. It means we support treaties in working with other countries. It means we support the rule of law internationally.

The second imperative is human security, and that security has to deal with basic needs: Each person in the world has a right to survive, a right to food that is fit to eat, and water fit to drink, and air fit to breathe. Each person has a right to a roof over his or her own head. Each person has a right to have clothes on their back. Each person has a right to some means of being able to make a living. Each person has a right to be free of the fear of violence. We have a responsibility to work to secure the world from a nuclear nightmare. We need to look at what we can do to protect peoples everywhere by working for not just nonproliferation, not just disarmament, but nuclear abolition, which in fact was the promise of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The third imperative I’ll discuss in this campaign is the imperative of peace. There are those who believe that war is inevitable. A belief in the inevitability of war makes war a self-fulfilling prophecy. We need to be convinced in our innate capability to create structures for peace in our society. We need to be convinced of our potential as a nation to make nonviolence an operating principle in our society. This is the motivating reason behind a Cabinet-level Department of Peace, which addresses directly, in a practical way, the challenge of domestic violence, spousal abuse, child abuse, violence in the school, racial violence, violence against gays, community relations disputes.

The imperatives of human unity, human security, peace, all create a context for human prosperity. We have the potential to create heaven on earth. New Jerusalem is within our reach. It’s waiting to be called forward through the power of courage, emanating through our hearts, through our dreams, which come from the longing of our souls. This truly is a time where we can change the world and create the world that we long for.

TRUTHDIG: You obviously have issues that you care deeply about, and it doesn’t seem like you’re going into this as a sort of popularity contest, but do you think you can win? Do you have a plan to win, say, the South, and parts of the Midwest?

KUCINICH: Yes. The very fact the people put Democrats in power in November over the issue of Iraq means that there exists a tremendous amount of support for affirming the will of the people to set a new course, not only for Iraq but for all of U.S. international policy. That percolation, which resulted in the Democrats gaining control of Congress, is still there. It is fairly astonishing that Democrat leaders would forget that only a month ago we were given the control of the Congress because of Iraq. It is fairly astonishing that less than a month after being given that constitutional obligation to assume a coequal position in the government, [we] would capitulate on Iraq by publicly declaring support for up to $160 billion in additional funding to keep the war going.

I’ve said it before, I’ve said it again: It is not credible to simultaneously say you are opposed to the war and continue to support funding for the war.

So these are some of the reasons why I’m running for president. And I believe that I will win, because people are truly looking for a new direction. Not by incrementalism, not by capitulation, but people are looking for real leadership, people are looking for foresight. And I’ve demonstrated foresight by moving out front very quickly when the administration was talking about attacking Iraq—warning the country that this was folly, warning the country that we needed to avert this conflict, letting Americans know that there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11 or Al Qaeda’s role in 9/11, that Iraq did not have WMD, did not have the intention or capability of attacking the United States.

Everything I said turned out to be true. People want leaders who know what the right thing is to do in the moment of crisis, not people who will say, years later, “Well, you know, I agree, this is what should have been done.” This is a call for clearsightedness for foresight and for action, and in each case I’ve demonstrated an ability to step forward. And I’m going to do it again, and I expect that the American people are going to respond very powerfully to my candidacy.

TRUTHDIG: John Kerry got tarred with the “flip-flopper” label in 2004 for his perceived wavering on the issue of Iraq. Do you think you’re going to have a better chance than someone like Kerry—or Clinton, who’s also been wishy-washy on some of the issues?

KUCINICH: I haven’t talked about any other candidates, and I’m not going to now. I think that my consistency speaks for itself, and I think that my opposition not only to the authorization for the war but continued opposition to its funding puts me apart from all the other candidates. I’m the only member of the House and Senate who has consistently voted against continued funding for the war.

TRUTHDIG: I saw Stephen Hesse of the Brookings Institute on CNN saying that candidacies like yours are just an ego trip. Is this an ego trip for you?

KUCINICH: I’ve spent the last five years of my life warning our nation about the path to war and about our occupation of Iraq. There are probably easier ways to pamper oneself.

ANOTHER GEM OF WISDOM FROM CHRIST...

From: http://christsway.co.za/blog/18/

Consciousness Energy

‘Keep your Consciousness whole, unfragmented’

CHRIST says:

“It is of the greatest importance to your health, relationships, success in life and your happiness, that you should fully understand the true nature of Consciousness (Letter 4A & B onward) and of your own unique Consciousness.

“You must fully grasp that what you THINK - and FEEL - and what you DO, is a ‘consciousness energy’ which forms the entire fabric of your experiences in life. It is the driving force behind all that happens to you and what you do. It is the ground on which you build your life and the reservoir of strength giving impetus to your daily life. It is all you ARE beyond your soul, at this present moment. It is the full scope of all you can be and do at this precise moment. The state of your consciousness limits or promotes your well-being. Therefore, the contents of your consciousness, the degree of your spiritual awareness, insights, perceptions, beliefs, knowledge, standards of behaviour, qualities of nature, morals, are your treasure from which you build your life. You can only build on what you are at this present time. And what you construct will be built of the elements or bricks of your consciousness - nothing else.

“Therefore, as hundreds of thousands of people are finding world-wide - if you want to change your life, you must first change your consciousness.

(Letter 5 will describe how to do this, very clearly)

“When you drive a car, you make very certain (if you are wise) that every part of the car is in good working order. Every tiny contributing factor to the trouble-free running of your car must be attended to - the battery topped up and leads connected. Spark plugs cleaned and tuned, petrol in tank, oil in sump and so on.

“Therefore, to create a happy successful life, you must take the greatest and daily care of the various elements and facets of your consciousness.

“You will remember and try to practise non-criticism and non judgementalism for these are destructive of others and eventually, we find ourselves in a similar firing line. You will try to control your anger, searching your mind for reasons why the target of your anger, behaved as they did. This will defuse your anger. You will try to find lovable traits about everyone you meet or see throughout your day, otherwise, you will, all unknowingly, be radiating an offensive consciousness energy which will be picked up and resented by others.

Possibly, all of these facets of consciousness are already known to you. But now I want to tell you about the dangers of fragmenting your consciousness.

You do this even when you tell a white lie. A black lie is a horrendous insult to your own consciousness and to the consciousness of your listener. You may think that it is of no consequence but when you lie you send out a stream of false consciousness on which you expect other people to build their responses. Such a hitch in your consciousness, since you know you have lied, creates holes in the fabric of your own consciousness.

Where there are holes in your consciousness there is a hiatus in the life force you expend on activities and goals, and a foul-up in the consciousness which keeps you healthy and happy. Even in your communication, it will cause a lack of the vibrancy and certainty that those with whole and healthy consciousness fabrics, are able to impart when speaking to others or even simply leaving a spoken message.

A healthy consciousness is created when you treat others as you would like to be treated. Therefore, fulfill your promises or make provision that the breaking of a promise will not cause undue frustration or unhappiness or difficulty. Tell the truth in such a way as your listener will not be offended. Love always finds a way.

Do not ‘fabricate’ stories to make yourself a hero of heroine or victim.

Do not exaggerate a circumstance in any way since you can send another person away with a falsehood in their minds. This can be more injurious to them than you can imagine. Never ever cause another person to stumble or fall along their daily path.

Let everything you think, say and do, be a harmonious whole directed in your mind and heart by love and concern for every other person’s well-being. In this way, you create the foundation of a whole, happy life for yourself. You create the type of consciousness which is easily attuned to that of Divine Consciousness.
Then, miracles happen.

If you lack success, examine your consciousness. Do you keep your word?

Subject: Sociologists Release New Book: Impeach the President: The Case Against Bush and Cheney

Sociologists Dennis Loo from Cal Poly Pomona and Peter Philllips from Sonoma State University have completed a new classroom resource book entitled:

Impeach the President: The Case Against Bush and Cheney
Seven Stories Press, 2006, $17.95 available in Bookstores Nationwide or on line at:

http://www.projectcensored.org/impeach.htm

In these desperate times, when lies and half-truths are official policy, when our young people and innocent Iraqi civilians pay with their lives for these lies, this book is a clear presentation of the crimes of Bush and Cheney. The chapters in this strong, thoughtful collection not only powerfully detail these crimes, they point a way forward for us all. I urge every thinking American to read this book."

— Cindy Sheehan, anti-war activist and author of Dear President Bush

"An airtight case for impeaching Bush and Cheney for war crimes and domestic malfeasance. It's high time for legal regime change!"

— Marjorie Cohn, President-elect, National Lawyers Guild

"An eye-opening, multi-layered indictment of the lawless rule of the Bush White House reactionaries. A well-edited, well-substantiated, an dwell-argued offering of hard-hitting truths that can serve as a manual for political action."

— Michael Parenti, author of The Culture Struggle and Superpatriotism

“A looming, new totalitarianism—that is the warning here. Citizens who feel uneasy owe it to themselves to read this important book and think about how to exercise their responsibilities. Citizenship, truth be told, isn't easy, nor free.”

— George Kenney, former State Department Official

"They can say that Homeland Security and FEMA are on the job, but New Orleans proves them wrong. They can claim they’re winning the war on terror and the war in Iraq, but everyday the facts belie their claims. They can assure us that they’re protecting our civil liberties and doing everything by the book, but nearly every week brings fresh revelations of their lawbreaking."

— from the Conclusion

In the face of the extraordinary and unprecedented threat the White House and its allies present to civil liberties, civil rights, the Constitution, international law, and the future of the planet, this persuasive collection makes the case that a drastically different political dynamic must be created right now.

Impeach the President is a comprehensive analysis of a criminal administration. It unearths the stories behind voter fraud in 2000 and 2004, the overt lies used to justify pre-emptive war on Iraq, the extensive, ongoing commission of war crimes and torture, the tragic failures in the lead-up to and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and lesser-known but equally alarming offences of propaganda and disinformation, illegal spying, environmental destruction, and the violation of the separation of church and state. Loo and Phillips chillingly reveal the full threat behind the radical right-wing force that has taken over the most powerful office in the world.

The collection includes a striking introduction by Howard Zinn and contributions from Dennis Loo, Peter Phillips, Judith Volkart, Dahr Jamail, Jeremy Brecher, Jill Cutler, Brendan Smith, Larry Everest, Greg Palast, Nancy Snow, Barbara J. Bowley, Mark Crispin Miller, Kevin Wehr, Richard Heinberg, Lyn Duff, Dennis Bernstein, Bridget Thornton, Lew Brown, Andrew Sloan, Cynthia Boaz, and Michael Nagler.

Impeach the President issues a clarion call for a popular movement even more powerful than the antiwar movement of the 1960s. As the authors write in the preface, “Governments do not fall of their own weight; they must be driven out.”

Reasons Why Bush and Cheney Must Be Impeached

1. Stealing the White House in 2000 and 2004 through outright voter fraud.

2. Lying to the American people and deliberately misleading Congress in order to launch an unprovoked war of aggression upon Iraq.

3. Authorizing and directing the torture of thousands of captives, leading to death, extreme pain, disfigurements, and psychological trauma. Hiding prisoners from the International Committee of the Red Cross by deliberately not recording them as detainees and conducting rendition of hundreds of prisoners to “black sites” known for their routine torture of prisoners. Indefinitely detaining people and suspending habeas corpus rights.

4. Ordering free fire zones and authorizing the use of anti-personnel weapons in dense urban settings in Iraq leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians – war crimes under international law.

5. Usurping the American people’s right to know the truth about governmental actions through the systematic use of propaganda and overt disinformation.

6. Building an imperial presidency by issuing signing statements to laws passed by Congress that negate Congressional intent. Hiding government decisions from public and Congressional view through subverting the Freedom of Information Act. Illegally spying on millions of Americans without court authorization and lying about it for years.

7. Undermining New Orleans’ capacity to withstand a hurricane prior to Hurricane Katrina; allowing New Orleans’ destruction by Katrina; and failing to come to people’s aid in a timely fashion, leading to the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Americans.

8. Denying global warming, disregarding peak oil, and placing oil industry profits over the long-term survival of the human race and the viability of the planet.

9. Violating the constitutional principle of separation of church and state through the interlinking of theocratic ideologies in the decision making process of the US government.

10. Failing to attempt to prevent the 9/11 attacks, despite a wealth of very specific evidence of a pending terrorist attack upon New York, and the World Trade Center in particular. Using this failure as a rationale for pre-emptive attacks on other countries and for the suspension of Americans’ fundamental civil liberties and our right to privacy.

11. Promotion of US global dominance of the world and the building and use of illegal weapons of mass destruction.

12. Overthrowing Haiti’s democratically elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide and installing a highly repressive regime.

Gore Chases Oscar Nod, Possible 2008 Bid

By Beth Fouhy

11 December 2006

Al Gore is waging a fierce campaign for recognition and an Oscar statuette for his global warming documentary, while reviving talk that he's pursuing a bigger prize: the presidency.

His recent itinerary has been the ultimate in high profile. The former vice president made self-deprecating jokes on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," offered ideas on preserving the environment to Oprah Winfrey and her daytime audience and parried questions on Iraq from Matt Lauer on the "Today" show.

This Saturday Gore is hosting a network of 1,600 house parties across the country to watch and discuss his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," with the Democrat planning to address the gatherings by satellite hookup. The movie is on the short list of feature-length documentaries being considered for Oscar nominations.

Crisscrossing the country to promote the DVD version of the movie - just in time for holiday gift-giving - Gore insists that he's not planning a return to politics.

"I am not planning to run for president again," Gore said last week, arguing that his focus is raising public awareness about global warming and its dire effects. Then, he added: "I haven't completely ruled it out."

Those words make Gore the 800-pound non-candidate of the Democratic field. The possibility of another presidential bid delights many Democrats still steamed over the disputed 2000 election, in which they argue a few more votes, a state other than Florida and a different Supreme Court could have put Gore, not George W. Bush, in the White House.

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is the front-runner, but a polarizing one for some Democrats. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is the electrifying newcomer, but limited in his experience. Gore remains, for many party activists, the Democrat and popular vote-getter done wrong.

"He won the election in 2000 - he just lost the (electoral) count," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Don Fowler said. "If I were he, I wouldn't rule out a run. It's an uncertain field, and he's a person who is widely respected."

In many respects, Gore is better positioned for a political comeback than in his previous bids.

He has won fame for "An Inconvenient Truth," the highest-grossing documentary of the year. His outspoken environmentalism and opposition to the Iraq war has drawn raves from many Democrats, who have been frustrated by the caution among some party lawmakers on those issues.

Derided in 2000 for being a wooden know-it-all, the new Gore is funny. He's done humorous turns on "Saturday Night Live" and voiced a disembodied head on the cartoon "Futurama," which is being made into a movie.

Perhaps most important for his future political endeavors, Gore has gotten rich. Thanks to a range of business ventures, including a longtime advisory relationship with Google and a seat on Apple Computer's board of directors, aides say he could spend as much as $50 million of his own money to launch a credible presidential run.

To be sure, Gore has given plenty of signals that he does not intend to become a candidate.

While Clinton, Obama and other likely contenders have begun courting activists and building their organizations, Gore has steered far from campaign mechanics.

And while many prospective candidates have visited states with early presidential contests such as Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, Gore spends most weekends at home in Nashville, Tenn., training environmentalists to deliver a slideshow presentation on global warming to audiences across the country.

"I see no signs of Gore organizing supporters right now," said Donna Brazile, Gore's presidential campaign manager in 2000.

Neither Clinton nor Obama has yet announced plans to run. Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has declared his candidacy, while Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh has formed an exploratory committee. Other likely candidates include Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 presidential nominee; former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, the 2004 vice presidential nominee; Delaware Sen. Joe Biden; Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd; and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Despite his protestations to the contrary, some Democratic strategists believe Gore could be persuaded to enter the race and will wait to see how the field shakes out before making a final decision.

Joe Trippi, who managed Howard Dean's Internet-fueled presidential campaign in 2004, said Gore would be a formidable candidate and could probably wait longer than others to enter the field.

"If anything, he's more relevant than anyone in the race because of his positions on the war and global warming," Trippi said. "And that's really tough to do in the Democratic Party, which treats its failed presidential candidates like members of leper colony."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announce the Oscar nominations Jan. 23, with the 79th Oscars slated for Feb. 25. Iowa caucuses would be less than a year after that.

Ohio Rep. Kucinich to run for president (Dec 11, 2006)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061212/ap_on_el_pr/kucinich2008_10
CLEVELAND - Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2004, said Monday he is planning another bid because his party isn't pushing hard enough to end the Iraq war. In a statement, Kucinich said he plans to formally announce his candidacy on Tuesday at Cleveland's City Hall, where he served as mayor of his hometown in the 1970s.The liberal, anti-war Ohio congressman said he was inspired to run because he disagrees with the way some of his fellow Democrats are handling the war, including approval of a proposal to spend $160 billion more on the conflict."Democrats were swept into power on Nov. 7 because of widespread voter discontent with the war in Iraq," said Kucinich, 60. "Instead of heeding those concerns and responding with a strong and immediate change in policies and direction, the Democratic congressional leadership seems inclined to continue funding the perpetuation of the war."The anti-war message was also the cornerstone of Kucinich's 2004 bid, which drew support from some Hollywood celebrities. His previous presidential proposals also have included a national peace department and a single-payer, universal health care system.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 — In the midst of a brief chat in his office last week, Representative Dennis J. Kucinich mentioned that, oh, by the way, he planned to run for president again in 2008. “Yes, I am,” Mr. Kucinich, Democrat of Ohio, said in response to a reporter’s question about a possible encore to his bid in 2004. Mr. Kucinich’s wife, Elizabeth Harper, who was seated next to him, arched her eyebrows in apparent surprise. Asked if he had told anyone this yet, Mr. Kucinich said no.“You just happened to ask,” he said. Then he walked out of his office and informed his press aide. The news from Mr. Kucinich, a six-term congressman, underscores the “What the heck?” sensibility that seems to be governing some entries into what may be the most crowded presidential field in history. Forced vaccines and quarantines are being signed into law as we 'debate' the solution to Bush's war in Iraq: Senate approves Burr's bioterrorism bill --Critics warn about the effects of 'secret vaccine production' 06 Dec 2006 The Senate passed a bill last night [ S.3678] sponsored by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., that would create a new federal agency to combat [foment] bioterrorism. The bill to establish the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, commonly referred to as BARDA, passed by unanimous consent. She was unaware that the bill had been passed by the Senate last night but said she's worried about the effects "secret vaccine production" could have on the American public. "This is an extremely dangerous precedent that is being set," she said. Routine and Systematic Torture Is at the Heart of America's War on Terror

By George Monbiot

The Guardian UK - 12 December 2006

In the fight against cruelty, barbarism and extremism, America has embraced the very evils it claims to confront.

After thousands of years of practice, you might have imagined that every possible means of inflicting pain had already been devised. But you should never underestimate the human capacity for invention. United States interrogators, we now discover, have found a new way of destroying a human being.

Last week, defence lawyers acting for José Padilla, a US citizen detained as an "enemy combatant", released a video showing a mission fraught with deadly risk - taking him to the prison dentist. A group of masked guards in riot gear shackled his legs and hands, blindfolded him with black-out goggles and shut off his hearing with headphones, then marched him down the prison corridor.

Is Padilla really that dangerous? Far from it: his warders describe him as so docile and inactive that he could be mistaken for "a piece of furniture". The purpose of these measures appeared to be to sustain the regime under which he had lived for more than three years: total sensory deprivation. He had been kept in a blacked-out cell, unable to see or hear anything beyond it. Most importantly, he had had no human contact, except for being bounced off the walls from time to time by his interrogators. As a result, he appears to have lost his mind. I don't mean this metaphorically. I mean that his mind is no longer there.

The forensic psychiatrist who examined him says that he "does not appreciate the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him, is unable to render assistance to counsel, and has impairments in reasoning as the result of a mental illness, ie, post-traumatic stress disorder, complicated by the neuropsychiatric effects of prolonged isolation". José Padilla appears to have been lobotomised: not medically, but socially.

If this was an attempt to extract information, it was ineffective: the authorities held him without charge for three and half years. Then, threatened by a supreme court ruling, they suddenly dropped their claims that he was trying to detonate a dirty bomb. They have now charged him with some vague and lesser offences to do with support for terrorism. He is unlikely to be the only person subjected to this regime. Another "enemy combatant", Ali al-Marri, claims to have been subject to the same total isolation and sensory deprivation, in the same naval prison in South Carolina. God knows what is being done to people who have disappeared into the CIA's foreign oubliettes.

That the US tortures, routinely and systematically, while prosecuting its "war on terror" can no longer be seriously disputed. The Detainee Abuse and Accountability Project (DAA), a coalition of academics and human-rights groups, has documented the abuse or killing of 460 inmates of US military prisons in Afghanistan, Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay. This, it says, is necessarily a conservative figure: many cases will remain unrecorded. The prisoners were beaten, raped, forced to abuse themselves, forced to maintain "stress positions", and subjected to prolonged sleep deprivation and mock executions.

The New York Times reports that prisoners held by the US military at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan were made to stand for up to 13 days with their hands chained to the ceiling, naked, hooded and unable to sleep. The Washington Post alleges that prisoners at the same airbase were "commonly blindfolded and thrown into walls, bound in painful positions, subjected to loud noises and deprived of sleep" while kept, like Padilla and the arrivals at Guantánamo, "in black hoods or spray-painted goggles".

Alfred McCoy, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, argues that the photographs released from the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq reflect standard CIA torture techniques: "stress positions, sensory deprivation, and sexual humiliation". The famous picture of the hooded man standing on a box, with wires attached to his fingers, shows two of these techniques being used at once. Unable to see, he has no idea how much time has passed or what might be coming next. He stands in a classic stress position - maintained for several hours, it causes excruciating pain. He appears to have been told that if he drops his arms he will be electrocuted. What went wrong at Abu Ghraib is that someone took photos. Everything else was done by the book.

Neither the military nor the civilian authorities have broken much sweat in investigating these crimes. A few very small fish have been imprisoned; a few others have been fined or reduced in rank; in most cases the authorities have either failed to investigate or failed to prosecute. The DAA points out that no officer has yet been held to account for torture practised by his subordinates. US torturers appear to enjoy impunity, until they are stupid enough to take pictures of each other.

But Padilla's treatment also reflects another glorious American tradition: solitary confinement. Some 25,000 US prisoners are currently held in isolation - a punishment only rarely used in other democracies. In some places, like the federal prison in Florence, Colorado, they are kept in sound-proofed cells and might scarcely see another human being for years on end. They may touch or be touched by no one. Some people have been kept in solitary confinement in the US for more than 20 years.

At Pelican Bay in California, where 1,200 people are held in the isolation wing, inmates are confined to tiny cells for 22 and a half hours a day, then released into an "exercise yard" for "recreation". The yard consists of a concrete well about 3.5 metres in length with walls 6 metres high and a metal grille across the sky. The recreation consists of pacing back and forth, alone.

The results are much as you would expect. As National Public Radio reveals, more than 10% of the isolation prisoners at Pelican Bay are now in the psychiatric ward, and there's a waiting list. Prisoners in solitary confinement, according to Dr Henry Weinstein, a psychiatrist who studies them, suffer from "memory loss to severe anxiety to hallucinations to delusions ... under the severest cases of sensory deprivation, people go crazy." People who went in bad and dangerous come out mad as well. The only two studies conducted so far - in Texas and Washington state - both show that the recidivism rates for prisoners held in solitary confinement are worse than for those who were allowed to mix with other prisoners. If we were to judge the US by its penal policies, we would perceive a strange beast: a Christian society that believes in neither forgiveness nor redemption.

From this delightful experiment, US interrogators appear to have extracted a useful lesson: if you want to erase a man's mind, deprive him of contact with the rest of the world. This has nothing to do with obtaining information: torture of all kinds - physical or mental - produces the result that people will say anything to make it end. It is about power, and the thrilling discovery that in the right conditions one man's power over another is unlimited. It is an indulgence which turns its perpetrators into everything they claim to be confronting.

President Bush maintains that he is fighting a war against threats to the "values of civilised nations": terror, cruelty, barbarism and extremism. He asked his nation's interrogators to discover where these evils are hidden. They should congratulate themselves. They appear to have succeeded.

Many comments are posted at http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,1970086,00.html including these ones:

"Much of what our CIA knows and employs (and disseminates among our military friends) in the way of torture is directly derivative from the Gestapo, like so much else of our Nazi-based science and technology. Who can call us a Christian country?! Thank God for Monbiot; most else have forgotten the issue."

"This is the heart of the matter, and it is entirely to the author's credit that he lays it out in clear and direct detail. The "war on terror" is no such thing; it is a refurbished version of the recently mothballed Cold War, much lamented in its passing by armaments industries and reactionary political figures. The atrocity of 9/11 provided these worthies with something they could only pray for: a pretext for revving up all the old machinery of cloak, dagger, rack and screw, and a place to demonstrate the virile virtues of its armaments. The major and real enemy in all this is not the Iraqis nor anyone else abroad; it is the American people themselves. The reason Constitutional protections are removed as the hoods and goggles are put on, is to send an unmistakable message to Americans *that this can happen to you*. If you protest too much or cross an ill-defined line, you too can be disappeared without notice or appeal or access to any means of adjudicating your condition. The same arch reactionaries who wanted to increasingly militarize America during the Cold War have achieved things they never could have imagined possible: habeus corpus, due process, privacy...all gone, fed into the Moloch of Big Brother's maw. 9/11 was a golden gift to the proto-fascists in American political life, and a body blow to progressive currents. Now, America is closer to being the Coulter/Rush/Bush vision of a "good" nation, in which the Three Freedoms of salute, shut up, and obey are incarnated in secret jail cells attended by uniformed guards.Padilla is the messenger; terror is the message."

"The really sad thing, and I say this as an American, is how many of us in the US condone or ignore this administration's use of torture and permanent imprisonment without trial. One of our most popular shows ("24") portrays torture as being effective and necessary. If we act immorally and renounce our better angels, then we have lost the fight against terrorism no matter how many governments we topple because we will have become terrorists as well."

"A useful and necessary reminder of where the use of illegal methods can take us. Although I am not American I say us because I believe that the problem is universal. It is, in fact, the only weakness in the article. Once people are removed from a legal system of protection then certain members of the executive will use this to vicariously enjoy sadistic pleasure, and further down the chain the torturers themselves will enjoy it directly. One can find similar examples of pointless torture in Stalin's Russia, the Mau Mau detention camps, or the ANC camps. Perhaps the Americans use technology more effectively but the same pattern of bureaucratic pleasure in expressing their power to hurt others and the willingness of others to actually inflict pain is unfortunately found everywhere in all societies."

"Excellent commentary! Not surprisingly I've not seen anything quite so pointed in the American papers. At the risk of severe economic reprisal, I want to say that the people in charge of our government have long 'enjoyed' abusing those it can, especially those in the Third World, and in particular Latin-America. (If Latin-America is 'wedded' to the U.S., then it is clearly a very abused wife.) Why would anyone be surprised at their unbridled activity against our own homegrown underclass? No matter what Padilla's guilty of, he's a citizen and doesn't deserve to be driven mad by mindless thugs. The key principle embraced by our current 'leaders' is that superiority deserves privilege, and they think their superiority is quite evident. No argument can change their minds and though it's clearly true that our government is not our people, the people have not fulfilled their responsibilities and, therefore, are just as culpable as our officials and representatives, in my opinion."

Iran opens conference questioning the Holocaust

Dec 11, 2006

By Edmund Blair

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran opened a conference on Monday to discuss whether Nazis used gas chambers to kill Jews and debate other facts about the Holocaust, drawing condemnation in the West and criticism from Iran's Jewish community.

Jewish rabbis were present at the government-sponsored event "Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision" alongside academics from Europe, where some countries have made it a crime to deny the Nazi killing of 6 million Jews from 1933 to 1945.

"The aim of this conference is not to deny or confirm the Holocaust," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in a welcome address. "Its main aim is to create an opportunity for thinkers who cannot express their views freely in Europe about the Holocaust."

The conference was inspired by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who since coming to power in August 2005 has sparked international condemnation with comments referring to the Holocaust as a "myth" and calling Israel a "tumor".

The event has drawn widespread criticism from Holocaust survivors, Jewish organizations, human rights groups and Western governments.

Among the participants was U.S. academic David Duke, a former Louisiana Republican Representative and Ku Klux Klan leader. He praised Iran for hosting the event.

"There must be freedom of speech, it is scandalous that the Holocaust cannot be discussed freely. It makes people turn a blind eye to Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people."

"ENORMOUS LIE"

French writer Georges Thiel, who has been convicted in France for spreading revisionist theories about the mass extermination of Jews, said the Holocaust was "an enormous lie."

"Jewish people have been persecuted, that is true, they have been deported, that is true, but there was no machinery of murder in any camp -- no gas chambers," he said.

Sessions at the two-day conference, held at the Foreign Ministry's Institute for Political and International Studies, were to include "Holocaust: Aftermath and Exploitation" and "Demography: Denial or Confirmation?"

Participants included at least five rabbis clad in long black coats and black hats, some wearing badges depicting the Israeli flag crossed out.

"We came here to put the Orthodox Jewish viewpoint regarding the attitude to the Holocaust," said British Rabbi Ahron Cohen. "We certainly say there was a Holocaust, we lived through the Holocaust. But in no way can it be used as a justification for perpetrating unjust acts against the Palestinians."

The conference has upset Iran's 25,000-strong Jewish community, said Moris Motamed, the sole Jewish representative in Iran's parliament.

"Denying it (the Holocaust) is a huge insult," he told Reuters. "By holding this conference, they (the government) are continuing to insult the Jewish community."

Many ordinary Iranians admitted to embarrassment about the event, which follows Iran's decision to hold a competition for cartoons about the Holocaust in October.

A former senior government official, who declined to be named, said that hosting the conference was unwise given diplomatic pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

"Holding such conferences, at a time when we face political international pressure, just creates more tension and will lead to more pressure. Such conferences should not be held," he said.

Subject: When Criticism of Cluster Bombs is "Anti-Semitic"

"Over 800 have signed the statement calling for "U.S. Jewish Solidarity with Muslim and Arab Peoples of the Middle East"." Comment: Big news! 800 Jews demonstrate against Israel's policies! Blanket Immunity from War Crimes When Criticism of Cluster Bombs is "Anti-Semitic"

By STANLEY HELLER

The Israeli paper Ha'aretz reports that the head of Germany's Jewish community accused a minister in Angela Merkel's German government of "anti-Semitism" because of the minister's statement on Israel's use of cluster bombs. Development Aid Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul had asked for a United Nations probe into Israel's use of cluster bombs in civilian areas of Lebanon.

Charlotte Knobloch, president of the Central Council of German Jews, complained about what she terms a growing "anti-mood [sic] against Israel and the Jews" in Germany. [Ha,aretz August 30] Merkel, who made absolutely no criticism of Israel during the fighting, immediately met with Knobloch to "soothe Jewish ire" according to Deutche Welle [August 31]

The U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland revealed this week that of the estimated 100,000 unexploded cluster bombs lying in Lebanon almost all of them were fired in the last few days of the fighting when the terms of the ceasefire had already been set. The Guardian (UK) reports Egleand said, "What's shocking--and I would say to me completely immoral is that ninety per cent of the cluster bomb strikes occurred in the last 72 hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a resolution," he said.

It was known that in the last days of the war the Israeli army was engaged in a desperate attempt to have some "victory" and rushed troops here and there in an attempt to have a photo shoot near the Litani River. What was not known until now was the blind spite that sowed the ground of South Lebanon with a massive number of bomblets.

Cluster bombs are delivered by a large canister and disperse over a wide area, a sort of lethal piñata. The bomblets come in many sizes. Some are tiny, even smaller than 2 inches in diameter. Kids are constantly trying to kick them or pick them up with the result in the loss an arm or leg or even death. "Every day people are maimed, wounded and are killed by these ordnance," said Egeland. The UN official based his estimate on the reports of the UN Mine Action Coordination Centre which has traveled through 85% of Lebanon. The casualty figures as of 29 August from unexploded ordnance rose to 59 people, including 13 killed and 46 injured.

Responding to U.N. reports of cluster bombs being found in Lebanese civilian areas the U.S. government has begun an investigation to determine if cluster bombs have been responsible for civilian casualties. It seems far fetched that the Bush Administration would do anything other than shower Israel with more money, but the Reagan administration did ban export of cluster bombs to Israel for six years for its misuse during its 1982 Lebanese invasion.

The Zionist Ultras have been circling the wagons on this issue, not giving an inch. Their hysterical statement by the German Jewish leader was typical of many.

Responding to a report by Human Rights Watch charging Israel with war crimes in its conduct of the war in Lebanon that was written by its director Kenneth Roth, Rabbi Avi Shafran of Agudath Israel has called Roth "loathsome." An editorial in the New York Sun accused Roth of "de-legitimization of Judaism" because his group condemned Israel's strategy as "an eye for an eye." Rabbi Aryeh Spero in Human Events Online referred to Roth as a "human rights impostor," and likened him to "Nazis and Communists." On Sunday, the Jerusalem Post published an op-ed by NGO Monitor's Gerald Steinberg titled "Ken Roth's Blood Libel." [quotes from Kathleen Peratis, Washington Post August 30] The fact that Kenneth Roth is Jewish and his father fled Nazi Germany makes no difference to the Ultras. If you are do not support Israel 110% you are a Jew-hater, a renegade, a self-hater, and a holocaust denier. Get it?

In a very competitive field Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League took the prize for the comment showing the most utter stupidly. In attacking Human Rights Watch he said if Hezbollah was not made to pay an "overwhelming price" for rocket attacks "the Holocaust would be in the works". [Peratis, Washington Post]

Jewish Disgust with Israel

In a very encouraging development hundreds of U.S. Jews are calling for strong measures to be taken against the Israeli government including a cut off of U.S. aid and U.N. sanctions. Over 800 have signed the statement calling for "U.S. Jewish Solidarity with Muslim and Arab Peoples of the Middle East". It states "we are outraged by the violence being perpetrated in our name both as Jews and as U.S. citizens. We, the undersigned, represent Jews across the United States who are choosing to stand in solidarity with the peoples of Gaza and Lebanon". It includes the statement, "There is no Jewish safety in a country that rehearses the violence and persecution which Ashkenazi Jews experienced for centuries through the annihilation of the Palestinian people and their homeland." The signers are collecting money for a full page in the New York Times and are just $800 away from their goal. The petition can be found at http://www.jewishsolidarity.info/petition.php

It was after the 1982 invasion of Lebanon that U.S. Jews in significant numbers began open and trenchant criticisms of Israel. Chomsky's watershed "The Fateful Triangle" was published that year. Hopefully there will be even bigger shows of outrage this time around.

Subject: Radioactive Polonium-210 is in Tobacco & causes 90% of all Long Cancers

Polonium-210

IT’S IN TOBACCO AND CAUSES 90% OF LUNG CANCERS!!

by Gregory Sams.

The UK press, in their main story on airborne radiation, continuously refer to polonium-210 as a rare isotope. It isn’t! It’s even available at a discount from most international airports. Whilst it appears as though the death of a Russian spy has alerted us to an exotic new poison, Polonium-210 is already killing tens of thousands of Britons annually!!!

In 1990, the American Surgeon General declared on national TV that radioactivity, not nicotine or tar, accounts for at least 90% of all smoking-related lung cancers.

Yes, cigarettes are lightly radioactive. Tobacco itself is particularly good at absorbing radioactive elements from the air and soil, but the majority of its radioactivity arises from the fertiliser used in tobacco growing, based on rock-mineral apatite.

This mineral contains radon, which decays to deposit deadly polonium-210 in the fine hairs of tobacco leaves, which then embeds in smokers' lungs, beaming out alpha radiation for years.

Increasing usage of these radon-rich fertilisers, from 1940, is thought to account for an 18-fold increase in the per capita incidence of lung cancers in the USA between 1930 and 1980. During the same period, though smoking had gone down by 20%, the levels of polonium-210 in tobacco leaves tripled. In 1982 the New England Journal of Medicine) estimated that a 30-cigarette per day smoker will accumulate radiation in their lungs that is equivalent to 300 chest x-rays per year.

Of 33,000 UK deaths per annum from lung cancer, 90% would equate to 30,000 caused by radiation . Whilst the death of Alexander Litvinenko fixates the media, it is sobering to realise that some 575 Britons die every week as a result of gradually ingesting the same substance that poisoned him.

Of course it is neither in the interests of the government nor the tobacco industry to publicise the radiation situation, which they jointly brought about. Nor do anti-smoking campaigners wish to give attention to confusing data which might show that smoking is not, of itself, the killer. They are well aware of the situation, and their reluctance to do anything about it is nothing short of criminal.

Perhaps we could benefit from the polonium-210 publicity bonanza by recognising it as the unnecessary toxin in a common drug. However socially undesirable is the smoking of tobacco, it need not lead to the suffering and tragic death by lung cancer of so many users.

The tragic loss of one Russian ex-spy could turn out to be for the greater good if, through raising this issue, the lives of millions of future smokers can be saved. SPREAD THE WORD!

Just google Polonium 210 tobacco to verify all this information for yourself.

THE FOLLOWING TWO MESSAGES RECEIVED THROUGH MIKE QUINSEY DEFINITELY DESERVES YOUR ATTENTION ;-)

Message from Ag-agria 13-December-2006

Greetings to you from your family of the stars, soon to be re-united in the truth of our Oneness. The time of our re-union approaches and we are excited to know that Humanity is in part already prepared. It makes our task much easier now that your consciousness has been lifted up, and you will be happier living in the knowingness of the truth. It is your natural desire to know about your true past, and not the often vague and deliberately misleading history presented to you.

It is important that you keep an open mind as to the revelations of your past, and when your connections to us are revealed. For many it will be a shock to their system and they will fear the consequences. However one of our prime objectives has been to conduct ourselves in a peaceful way that reflects our true benign nature.

Those who have followed our exploits will know that all of our actions including contacts with you have been conducted peacefully, and in no way threatening. In the back of some peoples minds will be stories that they have heard of abductions. These are not of our doing, but largely credited to the rebel group of Greys, and occasionally your own military. The advanced technologies that they have gleaned from the Greys, and the results of back engineering have enabled them to develop their own craft. They move under the cloak of secrecy and their activities can be mistakenly attributed to us.

Our own covert actions will show that far from posing any threat, we have monitored your progress for millennia of time. The purpose has been to ensure your safety and interference from visiting alien Beings. It is also to maintain a certain degree of control over your military developments, so that your evolution proceeds in accordance with the Creator’s plan.

We are aware that attempts have been made to discredit us, but we have shown our ability to overcome them. Even now the dark have a plan to stage a confrontation that will put you in fear of us. It is simply a stalling operation and one to create opportunities to take their weapons of mass destruction into space. Have no fear! We are more than a match for the grandiose plans of your Illuminati. Our response is to prevent confrontation, but we reserve the right to reply and defend ourselves if provoked or attacked. Bear in mind we have no designs on taking over the Earth, it is your home and you are its guardians.

However, you do not have anyone on Earth who can represent you whilst the last cabal is the ruling world power. We are your voice and behind you, and we have already made it clear to your governments that we will not tolerate interference with the plan for the upliftment of Humanity. It is your divine right and the path that you chose long ago, and we intend that you shall see it through to the planned end. Absolutely nothing can postpone the end of this cycle other than a divine decree, and we are appointed as your protectors and guides for this purpose. Once we reach the position of being able to come openly to Earth, we can then fill in the gaps in your history and eliminate the lies and deceit that have held you in bondage to various powerful groups.

You have been so mislead about your own place in the Universe, and you have been kept in the dark through the forcing of false Gods upon you. Your religious teachings are a mix of truth and falsehoods that have their roots in periods of time that are less than 4000 years ago. Consequently no one religion can claim as they do, to be the only one to have the complete truth. It is therefore wise to prepare yourselves for revelations that will permanently change your understanding. You will not be spoken down to and the truth will be given with full compassion for those who may be in shock, but we shall do it with full proof that will be irrevocable.

As a result of our contact with you over the last century, many channels have been opened up. We have gently brought you down from your unenlightened positions, to ones of illumination through our peaceful and often powerful messages. It has made a considerable difference, and softened the hardened attitude of those who have hitherto been unable to accept us. We are not devils or demons or connected with an anti-Christ, indeed we come from the higher levels of evolution of the Light and Love which we carry for all living life forms.

We are Christed Beings from many quarters of your Universe, having well passed the stage of evolution you are in at present. Many of you are also on the verge of becoming Christed Beings, and this is the great gift from the Creator that is for each of you to take to yourselves should you so desire. Now you will understand why we are coming so close to you, as it is part of our brief to ensure that your path remains open for Ascension. The dark forces are allowed to challenge your decision, but your resolve and determination will carry you through. Your Light will prove to be far too strong to be affected by the negative energies. Indeed, it often has the opposite result as you deflect or transmute them.

I am Ag-agria one of many that will soon come to Earth, and close to Michael as one of his Guides from the Sirian group. We are your family from Space, and like any other member we lovingly guide you knowing you perhaps better than you know yourself. It matters not to us what you have chosen to experience as it is all part of your evolution, and we see you in your perfection as absolutely equal to us. We have no sense of superiority and have long given up any ideas of egotism. We are Beings of Light that serve others and have a particular interest in helping you, as after all you are our Brothers and Sisters from eons of time ago.

There is not long to go before we can celebrate our victory together. Until then we send our love to protect you, and give you the strength to gloriously rise up to conquer the remaining challenges.

Thank you Ag-agria.

Message from Diane -- December 1, 2006

People of Earth, you are approaching a most defining time as the plan for your advancement starts to take shape. For so long your desires have illuminated the way forward, and at long last you are beginning to see what it is you need to do. Collectively you have the power in numbers to determine exactly where your future should lead. Not everyone understands or accepts that Humanity has a pre-ordained path to travel. However, the seeking of peace regardless of how you feel it will be achieved, is sufficient to create the powerful energies that will bring it to fruition.

At this stage in your evolution a growing awareness of your creative power is speeding up events into the time of realization. The use of Self-power has small beginnings, that have for example been expressed in various ways such as for healing purposes. Now the vision must be enlarged and take in the whole of Humanity, who should be seen as one unit of creation that can be influenced to see the pathway to everlasting peace. The Light should embrace every single person, and the result will be a quantum leap forward. Sooner or later there will be a glorious moment of completion and the achievement of Ascension.

Meantime, the simple things will continue to bring Light to Earth, and your thoughts and prayers are the way to do it. Do not underestimate your power, as you are the carriers of Light, and the more you can raise your vibrations the more you will be able to send out. Standing in your own Light, you will find yourselves protected from the daily bombardment of World news that is largely negative. You can allow it to pass you by without any ill effect on your vibrations.

Once you are assured of your ability to deflect the lower energies, you will find it becoming easier to stand your ground regardless of what goes on around you. Certainly there are difficult times ahead, but out of the seeming chaos you will suddenly find events taking a turn for the better. Strong indications will surface that will clearly show that great changes are taking place. As you progress into the early part of next year, a pattern will start to emerge indicating the manner in which the changes are about to occur.

The many groups that have worked hard to prepare the way for change will come to recognize each other, and in coming together present a formidable challenge to those in power. One such area will cover the admission by major governments regarding the reality of ET's and their craft. This will be a very important step towards making out first open contact permissible. It will only take one such step to open the floodgates to even greater events. All is finely balanced and in readiness for what will be seen as one of the greatest happenings upon Earth.

We of the Galactic Federation stand fully prepared for action, and sincerely wish to get started with the plan for Man's transformation. For so long we have contacted people with the idea that our existence should be carefully and slowly revealed. We have gently let it be known how you are related to us, and how we have followed and guided your evolution. You have had our confirmation that we are in service to the Creator, and that like you we too are made in the same image. We are one great family that has been separated through your desire to walk the path of Duality. Now all must change so that we can come together in a common purpose that will carry us into the higher realms. Your future lies not with your present Earth, but one that has been restored to its state of absolute beauty and harmony. Nothing less could exist in the realms where the vibrations are considerably higher. Your emergence from the dark of unknowing into the Light of Truth, is welcomed by those heavenly Beings that preside over your upliftment.

No longer shall you feel separated and isolated as upon Earth, but you shall come to know your place in the Creator's Kingdom. Then you will have no doubt that you are in reality Beings of Light. Many Higher Beings from all over the Universe gather to see your Ascension, such is the importance in your taking this step. Your immersion into separateness has been your challenge all along, and you have experienced all of its aspects time and time again.

Your natural state of being is one of existing in complete harmony and balance, and in the Love and Light of the Creator. Some of you are already experiencing a return to this condition, and it is helping quickly lift the vibration of Earth. Never has there been a time when so many opportunities for upliftment are available to you. Once we have opened full contact with you and the Masters follow, you shall learn first hand about the final years in this dimension. Through that understanding it will increase the numbers of you that are able to rise up, and can accept your true reality.

Our presence will help deal with the many questions that will undoubtedly arise about your time in duality. It will also clear up many misunderstandings about your past evolution, and how many different ET groups have guided your physical development. Your ancient history bears little resemblance to the truth of your time in these early periods of mankind. You have many links with us, and also those higher Beings that presently reside in your Inner Earth.

Eventually, no one will be in any doubt as to your course of evolution. The records of your actual sojourns upon Earth have been recorded, and can be graphically illustrated through our holographic technology. We come with the truth and in no way can it be adulterated. As you move into the higher dimensions, so will you too only be able to express yourself in this way. It will be a new way of life that is both comforting and satisfying after your experiences upon Earth.

I am Diane, and come to you as an Ambassador of the Higher Councils who are overjoyed at the progress you have made. They continue to send you immense and powerful rays of Light that carry their love and blessings.

Thank you Diane.

Take time to contemplate where you are with your evolution, and confirm in your mind exactly what you have as your goal. In so doing you will set yourself firmly on a path that will lead to its manifestation. The time is right to take a quantum leap forward, as many powerful energies make their way to Earth. With the prospect of a most progressive year ahead, you have everything to gain. As you attract like energies to yourself, so you will notice the changes in Self taking place at a faster rate than previously. Time itself continues to speed up, but you will adjust as you go along. Your body cells are changing, and in the not too distant future you will notice not just an end to the aging process, but an ability to control bodily functions. As a result, you will be able to restore the youthfulness and health that are contained in your blueprint. Already some of you have empowered yourselves so as to be unaffected by the conditions around you. I refer here to any type of detrimental radiation and chemical ingestion which would normally cause sickness. These are all signs of your rapid growth, as you leave behind the lower vibrations. This is only the start, and by the end of this cycle you will have shed the old bodily vibrations for the higher ones. As this happens all over the Earth, so you will notice how that which has no place in the future is crumbling and breaking up. CLIP

A Time of Unfoldment

This is an interesting time of unfoldment, the completion of many cycles and the opening to the new. As we know when one door closes, another one opens. Certainly since my trip to Peru this has been my experience. I think this is both personal, karmic and planetary.

As we look back, we can see that since the beginning of this millenium, 2000, energetically there has been a speeding up of everything. It is like time is no longer the same, and thats why so many people feel they don't have enough time, or they can't quite get a grip on things or deep within they feel out of zinc, often something just does not feel quite right. Unless you align with yourself on a daily basis and to the greater cosmic alignment, which is always shifting, it may feel that it is hard to keep up.

That is part of why on an outer level, it appears like so many things are going crazy. Even though so many more people are waking up and becoming more conscious, on another level those who are not aware appear to be falling deeper into the abyss of unconsciousness.

What I believe is needed is greater vision, more attunement to the higher levels and a very deep clearing of whatever issues stand in the way. This may seem obvious, and of course it is, but the work has to be done on a very deep level, and those who do engage in this clearing also do it for the collective consciousness. Being truly responsible and acting from the highest level of integrity is essential for anyone who is sincerely on the spiritual path. All around us we see those who proclaim to be spiritual and then act in insincere and unconscious ways without consideration for others. We live and exist in a pool of consciousness, and everything we think and do affects this pool, we have the ability to shift, change and transform this consciousness. Sometimes we may feel disempowered and that we don't have the ability to make a difference, but if we remember that each of us has an important part to play and really can make a difference and recognize that it starts with each individual and that like the hundredth monkey effect, it only needs one person to change a trend, to turn things around and to gain momentum.

As we move into the last part of the year and feel the Winter Solstice approaching, it is always a good time to reflect on how the year has been, how we wish to complete it and to prepare for the New Year to come. I always find this an exciting process, and look forward to the beginning of the New Year and creating new things. Of course we can make plans and prepare for the new, any day of the year, but somehow the end of the year offers an extra opportunity to do that, its like a bonus, which can be used and taken advantage of.

Energetically I can feel this inner shift, and recognize changes that need to be made, things that need to be let go of and new things that are ready and waiting to come in and this is the continuous unfolding process of life, which we are here to experience and enjoy.

Wishing you light and love, Maggie

Explore Planet Earth In Near-Real Time

Paris, France (ESA) Dec 05, 2006

ESA PR 43-2006. Have you ever wanted to track natural events in progress, such as fires, floods and volcanic eruptions, or simply explore the planet through the eyes of a satellite? ESA has created a website, MIRAVI, which gives access to the most recently acquired images from the world's largest Earth Observation satellite, Envisat.

MIRAVI, short for MERIS Images RApid VIsualisation, tracks Envisat around the globe, generates images from the raw data collected by Envisat's optical instrument, MERIS, and provides them online within two hours. MIRAVI is free and requires no registration.

"ESA designed MIRAVI so that the public could have access to daily views of Earth. Naturally, scientists are already familiar with these data, but we thought these images would be interesting to everyone. Seeing the most recently acquired images of the planet will allow people to witness the magnificent beauty of Earth and become more knowledgeable about the environment," ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes Volker Liebig said.

To enjoy the service, simply visit the MIRAVI website at http://www.esa.int/miravi and either browse the very latest images by clicking on the snapshots to the left, or view a specific location by either selecting an area on the world map or entering its geographic coordinates. MIRAVI also provides archived images since May 2006, searchable by date.

Although the images are fascinating and provide the marvellous feeling that users are 'onboard the satellite', they are not suitable for scientific use. Scientists use MERIS products that exploit the instrument's 15 spectral bands and are generated with sophisticated algorithms. MIRAVI images use only a few spectral bands processed to appear the way the naked eye would see them.

ESA's Envisat Mission Manager Henri Laur said: "The Envisat mission is a great success for Europe as a major source of information on the Earth system, including insights into factors contributing to climate change. Since its launch in 2002, Envisat continuously monitors the Earth's land, atmosphere, oceans and ice caps, thanks to its ten sophisticated instruments."

Envisat circles the Earth in a polar orbit at an 800-km altitude, allowing MERIS to acquire global coverage every three days. MERIS measures the solar radiation reflected by the Earth, which means the sun must be present for MERIS to produce an image. Because the sun is low over Nordic areas during winter, images of Scandinavia, for example, are not currently available, except through the archive. The situation will reverse, however, from March onwards, and images of the area will be acquired daily. In contrast, Antarctica is visible for the next two months.

World Fire Atlas (WFA)
http://dup.esrin.esa.int/ionia/wfa/index.asp
More than 50 million hectares of forest are burnt annually, and these fires have a significant impact on global atmospheric pollution, with biomass burning contributing to the global budgets of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide. For a decade now, ESA satellites have been continuously surveying fires burning across the Earth's surface. Worldwide fire maps based on this data are now available online in near-real time through ESA's ATSR World Fire Atlas. In addition to maps, the time, date, longitude and latitude of the hot spots are provided.

Bread, Bread, Everywhere, Yet not a Morsel to Eat

by Jason Miller

Dec 10 2006

Pelted by a perpetual hail of electrons fired through a cathode ray tube, the pixels on my PC monitor feed me a generous intellectual bounty of words and images emanating from virtually infinite points dotting the globe. Enabling me to interface with the Internet at will, my computer serves as my window to the world and as a portal through which I can unleash my writings upon the unsuspecting.

Earlier this week as I peered into cyberspace through my ostensibly one-way aperture, I happened upon a picture that my imperialist indoctrination had conditioned me to reflexively dismiss or ignore. However, I’ve grown increasingly resistant to the “charms” of the pathological delusions of American superiority, invulnerability, impunity, and entitlement to decadence. Something about this particular assemblage of glowing pixels left me flailing in a raging river of emotion. As I negotiated the tempestuous feelings surging within me, I made the conscious decision to forgo the American Way of dismissal and distraction. Instead, I connected and contemplated.

Staring me in the face was the tragic image of a Kenyan child condemned to the abject suffering of death by starvation. A massive tear confirmed the depth of his misery, yet his angelic eyes still beamed with the radiance of his life force. Not even the brutal assault of famine could extinguish the persistent flame of the human spirit.

In sharp contrast to the enduring blaze of his inner being, his corporeal shell had withered in a macabre synchronicity with the plants of his drought-ravaged environs. Yet despite his region’s temporary scarcity of food, like his metaphorical counterpart, this diminutive scare-crow existed in a world glutted with comestibles that were not meant for him. With leather-like skin stretched tautly over his protruding skeleton, the slightest breeze would surely have caused him to rustle like a dry corn husk. Blood seeped from my heart as I made a vain attempt to imagine his pain.

Despite experiencing nearly overwhelming pathos, I remained focused and probed for a deeper understanding of this tiny innocent’s torment.

Until recently, starvation had been an abstraction so far removed from my reality that I had hardly considered it. But in that one poignant moment, my years of personal struggles, work with the homeless over the last eight months, and choice to immerse myself in the human suffering encapsulated in that simple JPEG steeled my determination to examine, explore, and understand a grim aspect of human existence.

Starvation is a Grueling Process….

Denying the human body adequate nutrition for a prolonged period results in an agonizing three stage process of physical deterioration, a host of nasty symptoms, the potential of numerous excruciating afflictions, and eventually, death.

In the initial phase, the body breaks down stores of glycogen to produce the energy it needs. In less than 24 hours glycogen stores are generally exhausted and fats become the primary fuel for the body. Once fat is depleted, precious proteins comprising human muscle are metabolized to produce energy. This third stage causes rapid muscle deterioration and eventually results in the extreme emaciation embodied by the starving Kenyan boy whose image was now deeply tattooed onto my cerebrum.

A starving person can look forward to listlessness, fatigue, skin rashes, extreme irritability, and a significantly compromised immune system. Add diarrhea, scurvy, severe edema (swelling) of the abdomen, and heart failure to the mix and you have a comprehensive recipe for human anguish. Perhaps it is a blessing that most sufferers fall victim to illness or disease before starvation runs its course.

Famine and the Grim Reaper….a match made in Hell….

Delving further, I was startled to learn how widespread hunger and famine are on our planet, particularly in the “developing world”.

Mark Elsis offered this sobering perspective at Lovearth.net :

"On Tuesday September 11, 2001, at least 35,615 of our brother and sisters died from the worst possible death, starvation. Somewhere around 85% of these starvation deaths occur in children 5 years of age or younger. Why are we letting at least 30,273 of the most beautiful children die the worst possible death everyday? Every 2.43 seconds another one of our fellow brothers and sisters dies of starvation. Starvation doesn't just happen on Tuesday September 11, 2001, it happens everyday, 365 days per year, 24 hours per day, it never stops."

On 12/5/06, the world human population was 6.4 billion. By that same day, 10.1 million people had starved to death in 2006. A human being dies from hunger-related causes every 2.43 seconds. Yet it doesn’t have to be that way.

If all else fails, blame the victim…

Blaming starvation’s victims for populating the planet beyond its capacity may assuage many people’s guilt, but this heartless conclusion is based on pernicious myths. Humanity produces more than enough food to sustain the entire world population. The United States alone wastes a shocking 96 billion pounds of food each year even as we experience an epidemic of obesity.

In its rush to dominate, plunder and exploit “developing nations, the “developed world” (led by the United States), causes many of the famines it duplicitously attributes to irresponsible procreation.

“Free trade”, “economic development”, and IMF/World Bank “assistance” are prescriptions for disaster for the people of the “developing world”. Having eliminated much of their own arable land for commercial or industrial use, the Neocolonial masters rely heavily on imported food from their servant states, significantly reducing these already impoverished nations’ ability to feed their own people. Urbanization in “developing countries” (fostered by Western economic development) draws large populations into cities where people no longer have the means to cultivate their own food. World Bank loans usually result in projects that benefit the overlords and create a sea of debt for their underlings.

In its bid to oppress the world, the United States often installs and supports authoritarian leaders who implement Neoliberal policies that foment conditions leading to famine and starvation for their own people. Until the recent democratic successes of indigenous populists in Latin America, governments refusing to align with the United States were often comprised of ruthless elites whom the people initially embraced as a welcome respite from (or alternative to) US-style oppression. Either scenario generally results in profound misery for the poor and bliss for the aristocracy.

Budgeting priorities….spending $99.50 to kill them and 50 cents to keep them alive...

Not only does the United States contribute heavily to the atrocity of widespread starvation. Its economic aid for famine relief that many American apologists trumpet is negligible relative to the money it spends to wage war and kill innocent human beings.

Consider this excerpt from my inspiration for this essay, Andrew S. Taylor’s brilliant piece entitled Moral Mathematics in the Post-Enlightenment Era ( http://www.mendacitypress.com/12.2006Taylor.html ):
“As of October 22, 2006 the total cost of the Iraq war is $336 billion. Let's do the math. Four years after Afghanistan, we had spent $1.62 billion helping the citizens of that nation to rebuild their infrastructure and secure their "freedom." Less than four years after invading Iraq, we have spent 207 times that amount to violate the rights of a society that wants us gone from their home.

Here's more:

'To date in FY 2006, the United States has committed more than $175 million for immediate life-saving interventions, targeting the most affected areas in the Horn of Africa with water and sanitation, health, nutrition, and food assistance.'

And:

'Congress has already appropriated about $850 million for aid to all of Sudan in 2005 and 2006, and the White House has requested another $880 million.'

Well goodness, that's almost more than we've given Afghanistan! It is almost 0.5% of the yearly budget in Iraq, where it seems we may have killed more than the 400,000 than have already starved to death in Darfur, and no doubt displaced a number comparable to the 2 million displaced there.”

Directing my thoughts back to the tortured soul whose photograph had imbued me with a desire to dissect the subject of starvation, I wondered if by some miracle he had survived. Other questions rushed to mind. What was his name? How old was he? What was his favorite game? What did he like to eat, when he had food? What happened to his parents? If he died, then how or when?

Realizing I could do little more than conjecture or speculate, I directed my attention back to my feelings. My sadness for the boy had progressed into abhorrence of the elites, oligarchs, and plutocrats, both here and in the nations plagued by famines.

I also felt grateful that I had disciplined myself to pursue my thoughts and feelings elicited by that haunting image of a dying child.

And what conclusions had I drawn or reaffirmed?

1. Exercising empathy is both a balm for the soul and anathema to American Capitalism.

2. A significant portion of world hunger is intentionally perpetuated to ensure that a relative few can gluttonously self indulge.

3. Manipulation and subjugation via economic means are often the principal causes of famines and mass starvation.

4. Behind the United States’ façade of benevolent superpowerdom lurks a craven pack of ruthless predators with the moral principles of Caligula.

5. And perhaps most importantly, my oft-expressed antipathy for many of the institutions, systems, policies, and actions of the American Empire is well-founded.

In the final analysis, the little wretch for whom I had grieved had not suffered in vain. He had starved so that the "people who matter" can revel in their opulence.

And on top of that, we have an Empire to run. Somebody has to make sacrifices. It might as well be "Third Worlders".

Hunger Facts

Every day in the developing world, 30,100 children die from mostly preventable and treatable causes such as diarrhea, acute respiratory infections or malaria. Malnutrition is associated with over half of those deaths. More than 800 million people in the world are malnourished -- 777 million of them are from the developing world. 177 million of them are children. In the last 50 years, almost 400 million people worldwide have died from hunger and poor sanitation, according to the report. That's three times the number of people killed in all wars fought in the entire 20th century. More Hunger Facts at http://www.bread.org/hungerbasics/index.html

I just wanted to pass my idea for Christmas on here. I love your work Jean.

Socially/Globally Responsible Christmas

Dear Family and Friends,

I’m feeling compelled to have what I’m calling a socially/globally responsible Christmas this year. I would like to use my money in what I feel is a more productive way for Christmas. Instead of sending you all silly little things that you don’t need or want, I would like to use this money to help people who are really in need. I know there are people living in poverty, people who are starving, people who need medical care and can’t afford it. Hopefully I have your blessing in doing this. I am encouraging you to do the same if you feel so inclined. I really don’t need anything right now, so feel free to give to whatever charity you like.

Besides truly helping people in need, this will give me a new meaning for Christmas. I feel that I’m doing something helpful to those in need. It will also help me to escape the commercialization of Christmas. This will also help to eliminate some of the stress of Christmas going shopping, fighting the crowds, using up a lot of time running around to find what I feel would be the perfect item which probably wouldn’t be. I will instead spend the time researching charities to ensure that I’m getting the best bang for my bucks.

What I would like to do also, to show you all how much I care, is to offer up my time to help you with some project or chore. My time is my most valuable asset right now, as I know it is for many of you. If you need a hand cooking a meal, planting a garden, cleaning you house, etc, give me a call. I try my best to help out.

Lastly I feel that we should be personally responsible for Christmas. We shouldn’t spend money we don’t have. I know that is difficult, but we can really cut out a lot of little expenses. Let’s try to think first of those who are truly in need. I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas season.

Love and peace,

Nansea

Please pass this idea on if you like it. Most of the people who I’ve spoken to about it think it’s a great idea.
