The Peace Run and Other Culture Of Peace Activities For Early Spring 2006
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/earthchange-bulletins/message/3249
Message from Dennis Banks: With so much violence happening at all levels, and so many killings happening in Iraq, it's time we look at these events as wake-up calls for all of us to answer. In 1978 we took up the challenge to run for our life and run for the planet we call Mother Earth. Now 27 years later we still run and have kept running in different countries to bring awareness to our responsibility to live in harmony with Mother Earth. Please join us as we run this course again. The following message was left by Victoria morningdove678@aol.com> on 2006-02-11 in the ERN guestbook: "Has any one ever heard of this new movie that is about to be released sometimes this year (2006). I thought it may be worthy of your attention and your ERN subcribers may also be interested in giving this website - http://whatisthesecret.tv/movie3/qt_large.html - a view. I thoroughly enjoy your informative emails especially those that bring about love and light into the hearts and minds of some many of us. It is a beautiful heart warming feeling to be connected to such a loving force such as yours in the universe. Thank you for warmth, kindness and love."

What do you think of this? What if all people of the World would say I love you to one another at the same time? Many spiritual beliefs tell of a time when we existed in harmony with one another. Do you think this mental capability could have been taken away by mistrust and hatred? Possibly by this mass expression of love we could eliminate hate, and return to this mental state. Beyond living in peace, maybe it could give us the realization of eternal life. If the human spirit lives forever maybe we will be conscious of seeing through other eyes. Could you help organize this effort? On June 3rd 2006 at 1:00 PM Greenwich time if all people would silently or vocally say, I love you all people of the Earth, with strong feeling. We will need an accurate time coordinate, and keep repeating for a few minutes to allow for discrepancies in time. This should be repeated annually . Until there is the participation for dramatic results, just doing it should make the World a better place to live. There appears to be a grave threat to our Planet developing now, making it more obvious that it is worth a try. Recommended by "Ken Crane"

Syria switches to euro amid confrontation with US (Feb 13, 2006)

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria has switched all of the state's foreign currency transactions to euros from dollars amid a political confrontation with the United States, the head of state-owned Commercial Bank of Syria said on Monday. "This is a precaution. We are talking about billions of dollars," Duraid Durgham told Reuters. The bank, which still dominates the Syrian market although private banks have been allowed to set up in the last few years, has also stopped dealing with dollars in the international foreign exchange flows of private clients. The United States has been at the forefront of international pressure on Syria for its alleged role in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri a year ago. Damascus denies involvement in the killing. "It looks like a kind of pre-emptive action aimed at making their foreign assets safer, preventing them from getting frozen in case of any conflict," said a Middle East economist who requested anonymity.

Allegations Cloud Haitian Vote Count
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021306O.shtml
The slow pace of counting ballots has tipped what was seen as Haiti's most successful election ever - a huge, peaceful turnout of voters despite a chaotic start to balloting - into another volatile crisis.

Angry Preval supporters protest Haitian vote results (February 13, 2006)
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1613345
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Reuters) - Angry supporters of ex-President Rene Preval paralyzed the Haitian capital with burning tires and roadblocks on Monday as Preval fell further below the 50 percent needed to win the presidency and allegations of election manipulation mounted. (...) The peaceful atmosphere following last Tuesday's vote began to unravel amid charges that election officials were tampering with results to prevent a first-round victory by Preval, a one-time ally of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was ousted in a bloody revolt two years ago. Like Aristide, Preval is viewed as a champion of the Caribbean country's poor masses, most of whom live on $1 a day, but he is distrusted by the small and wealthy elite. "We are going to put one million people in the streets in the coming hours," said John Joel Joseph, a community leader in the Port-au-Prince slums. "The people won't take this," he added, referring to the latest vote count. Traffic ground to a halt, schools shut down and the U.N. told its employees to stay home as demonstrators piled wrecked cars and tree branches in the capital's streets after the latest results. With 90 percent of the vote counted, the Provisional Electoral Council said Preval had 48.7 percent.

UN peacekeepers kill Haitian protestor (Feb. 13, 2006)
http://tinyurl.com/d9v7r
PORT-AU-PRINCE — UN peacekeepers opened fire today on Haitians protesting against election results, killing at least one and wounding four, witnesses said as flaming roadblocks paralyzed the capital. Hundreds of screaming demonstrators elsewhere stormed into an upscale hotel housing an electoral office in the hills above Port-au-Prince and helicopters landed on the roof to evacuate guests. Associated Press journalists saw the body of a man in the street in the Tabarre neighbourhood, a T-shirt bearing the image of leading candidate Rene Preval soaked in blood. Witnesses said Jordanian UN peacekeepers opened fire on them, killing two and wounding four. The body of the second victim was not at the scene. Protestors have alleged that the electoral commission is manipulating the vote count to prevent leading candidate Rene Preval, a one-time protege of ousted president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, from winning a first-round victory in this battered and poor Caribbean country.

The Pestilent Presidency: A Nation Conditioned (02/02/06)
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article11756.htm
The continued dismantling of America’s very essence, the decimation of its founding core and its evolving surface, has been a product of both purposeful malevolence as well as incompetent ignorance. While the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans continue to deteriorate, each day losing more knowledge, freedom, democracy and economic survivability – though with many remaining ignorant or blinded to their actual plight – the other America, that of the elite and the corporate world, has risen in exponential fashion to take the complete reigns of power away from the rest of us. As a result, the America of times past, where the People still ruled, has given way to the America of tomorrow, a corporatist ruled land where citizens are pawns and corporations kings. In the five years since George W. Bush was anointed to the presidency a pestilence of decrepit efficiency has overtaken the nation, accelerating and magnifying what was already an empire in rapid decline. Since early 2001, very little has gone right in the America of working and middle class citizens, both of progressive and conservative beliefs, young and old, hundreds of millions strong, divided by differing opinion yet bonded by economic and social interests. At the same time, however, the reign of George Bush the Lesser has become a bonanza to the corporate and elite world as the nation is plundered of treasure and altered from deep within the halls of Washington, its wealth and resources reallocated to and misappropriated by the Establishment, thereby transforming a government once of, by and for the People into one strictly and efficiently receptive only to the interests of corporations. (...) The Pestilent Presidency has been a malignant tumor to the America of you, me and everyone else. He has been a grand success to the corporate world. Who do you think he represents? Whose interests does he help further? Only when he departs and exits our lives will the curse of Bush lift from our country, dissipating like a long, permanent haze, and perhaps only then can we try and reclaim what has been lost, if it is not already too late. The ruins of what George W. Bush will leave behind after he leaves our reality will be strewn all around us, rotting and eroding, the whispers of a better America barely audible, yet its horizon ready to be radiant once again. With him gone we will finally try to rebuild and move forward, trying to erase memories of the Pestilent Presidency from our midst, trying, desperately, to make right the direction of America, trying, as much as possible, to never again allow a pestilence to destroy what we stand for, in the process inoculating ourselves with the antidote of harsh lessons learned, finally eradicating the diseases and fears that most ail us. Elizabeth Holtzman: Nixon to Bush & the Case for Impeachment (01/12/2006)
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut?pid=48862
A few days before the New Year, soon after the New York Times reported that Bush had authorized the warrantless wiretapping of thousands of Americans, I called Elizabeth Holtzman. I remembered that Nixon was charged in Article II of his bill of impeachment with illegal wiretapping for what he, too, claimed were national security reasons. And memories of Holtzman as a young leader on the House Judiciary Committee, during Watergate, made me sure she'd be a rigorous, thoughtful voice on this gravest of issues. (...) So, today, some thirty years after Watergate, a leader in the impeachment of Richard Nixon--former member of the House Judiciary Committee Elizabeth Holtzman--returns to the national stage, with her cover story in this week's Nation, to make the case for impeachment again: this time against President George W. Bush. The article is especially powerful because of its sober tone, its rigorous argumentation and fastidious documentation. It is also moving because it is informed by Holtzman's personal experience and political history. "I can still remember the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach," Holtzman writes, "during those [Watergate] proceedings, when it became clear that the President had so systematically abused the powers of the Presidency and so threatened the rule of law that he had to be removed from office." Holtzman understood then, and understands now, that impeachment is a "tortuous process"-- the most extreme Constitutional act in a democracy, a "last resort." Voting for impeachment, she remembers, was "one of the most sobering and unpleasant tasks I ever had to undertake...[And] At the time, I hoped that our committee's work would send a strong signal to future Presidents that they had to obey the rule of law." "I was wrong," Holtzman admits. And "now that President Bush has thrown down the gauntlet and virtually dared Congress to stop him from violating the law, nothing less [than impeachment] is necessary to protect our constitutional system and preserve our democracy." Bush Abusing Power of Office (Feb 13)
http://www.islandpacket.com/editorial/letters/story/5522901p-4975226c.html
George W. Bush is breaking the law and is lying to the American public and Congress about it. And worse, he is asserting, as Richard Nixon did, that as a "wartime president," he has the right to do anything he decides is necessary, regardless of any laws. Wrong. No one has such a right. The Bush administration again is abusing its powers in this very transparent maneuver to prevent anyone, including Congress, which is mandated by the Constitution to oversee the executive branch, from discovering whose private communications they are viewing. Shades of Watergate? Much worse. Nixon would have been ecstatic at the awesome power of such a weapon.Bush, Cheney, Gonzales and the whole stable of spinners have been out propagandizing the public with the lie that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is too cumbersome for the war on terrorism. Wiretapping Citizens—Bush Must Want Impeachment (Feb 13)
http://horus.vcsa.uci.edu/article.php?id=4448
The man just cannot get his message through to the American public. From starting a war in Iraq to wiretapping American citizens, Bush has shown that he’s on a mission, a mission that we keep preventing him from accomplishing. Can’t you see? The poor man is trying to get fired. Being the president is tough and Bush just does not want the job anymore. He thought that going to war with a country on utterly false pretenses would at least get him kicked out in 2004, but no, he was re-elected. Then he got desperate. Bush knows his history and looked toward Nixon for inspiration. Bush became excited, but he decided to go a step further just to be on the safe side. He got together with the National Security Agency, and told them to spy not on a small group of Democrats, but on hundreds of American citizens, illegally, because he claimed that they were a strong threat to the nation and American citizens (like I said, the man is desperate). Oh, how George was beaming at his own cleverness. Surely, this would get him his freedom. Why, he even had all his toys packed. And now, with U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez under fire from the Senate, an impeachment is not so far-fetched. I support my president and his wishes, so that is why I hope to convince readers that Bush should indeed be thrown out of office. CLIP

On the February 9 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann honored Fox News and recent CNN hire Glenn Beck with "Worst Person in the World" awards with Fox News receiving the bronze and gold medals and Beck taking home the silver. Fox News earned the bronze for playing footage from the 1996 film Independence Day (Twentieth Century Fox) during its coverage of President Bush's announcement that a terrorist plot against Los Angeles' U.S. Bank Tower had been foiled, and was awarded the gold for playing an edited clip of civil rights leader Rev. Joseph Lowery's remarks during Coretta Scott King's funeral, during which he mentioned the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Fox cut out the majority of the 23-second applause and standing ovation, which prompted Roll Call executive editor Morton M. Kondracke to observe, after viewing the clip, that the audience at the funeral did not go "wild" over Lowery's remarks. Olbermann honored Beck for comments Beck made on his nationally syndicated radio show about former President Jimmy Carter's remarks at the King funeral. Beck asked: "Is there is a bigger waste of skin than Jimmy Carter?" The three events had been documented by Media Matters for America. CLIP - Recommended by "Kathleen Roberts" weerkhr@pacbell.net>

Another Cave-In on the Patriot Act (Feb 11)
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/11/opinion/11sat1.html?th=&emc=th&pagewanted=print
The Patriot Act has been one of the few issues on which Congress has shown backbone lately. Last year, it refused to renew expiring parts of the act until greater civil liberties protections were added. But key members of the Senate have now caved, agreeing to renew these provisions in exchange for only minimal improvements. At a time when the public is growing increasingly concerned about the lawlessness of the Bush administration's domestic spying, the Senate should insist that any reauthorization agreement do more to protect Americans against improper secret searches. When the Patriot Act was passed after Sept. 11, 2001, Congress made some of its most far-reaching provisions temporary so it would be able to reconsider them later on. Those provisions were set to expire last December, but Congress agreed to a very short extension so greater civil liberties protections could be added. This week, four key Republican senators — later backed by two Democrats — said that they had agreed to a deal with the White House. It is one that does little to protect Americans from government invasions of their privacy. (...) In late December, it looked as if there was bipartisan interest in the Senate for changing the worst Patriot Act provisions and standing up for Americans' privacy rights. Now the hope of making the needed improvements has faded considerably.

Study shows increase in brain cancer risk from using a mobile or cordless phone for over 5 years (06/02/2006)
http://www.powerwatch.org.uk/news/20060206_brain_tumours.asp
A new study has just been published in the Journal of Oncology (February 2006), showing the most convincing evidence yet that long term usage of mobile and cordless phones may well increase the chance of getting brain cancer. Usage of analogue mobile phones for longer than 1 year was found to increase the risk of acoustic neuroma threefold (OR = 2.9 - 95% CI 2.0-4.3). Both GSM digital phones and cordless telephones were found to increase the risk by approximately 50% (OR = 1.5 - 95% CI 1.1-2.1 and OR = 1.5 - 95% CI 1.04-2.0 respectively). It is currently unlikely for a study to find much of an association between a cause and brain cancer with less than 10 years exposure as it usually takes at least this long for brain cancer to develop to the point it is diagnosed. This is one of the first studies thought to be capable of making a genuine assessment of mobile phone usage for longer than 10 years.Initial analysis of the results in the study suggest that there is, on the whole, a noticeable increase in risk after 5 years of use. For acoustic neuromas there seems to be little further increase after 10 years, however for all benign tumours grouped together, the increase with time is significant. The following increased relative risk results are for GSM phone users who have used their phone for at least 64 hours in total (i.e. 64 minutes per month over 5 years or 32 minutes per month over 10 years) and cordless phone users over 195 hours (i.e. 98 minutes per month or 3 minutes each day, averaged over 10 years). "Olympic Games and... UFOs in Turin!!"[Translated By Lavigna Palotta] From the Italian Newspaper, La Stampa, Turin: Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006 - "In Turin the countdown for the beginning of the winter Olympic Games 2006 has already started. It is a very important event for the Italian town, which, in the next days will be to the fore all over the world. "Perhaps a too important event to be ignored by the Extraterrestrial Intelligence constantly visiting the Earth."This perhaps would explain the weird sightings that occurred in these last few days in Carmagnola (TO) Turin. One of these anomalous unidentified flying objects was photographed by a witness, Saverio Mirabelli, living in Carmagnola, very close to the town where the next Olympic Games will take place."The advance of the object was preceded by a "kind of lighting coming from far away. Subsequently a ball of light came out from the trees, emitting a sort of "whisper". - Forwarded by "Kathleen Roberts" weerkhr@pacbell.net>

From: "Suzanne Ward" suzy@matthewbooks.com>
Subject: Message from Matthew
Date: 12 Feb 2006

February 11, 2006

S: Matthew dear, hello! Is this a good time to talk?

MATTHEW: Mother, dear soul, always is a good time for me to talk with you! And although I know your thought, I'd like you to phrase your question as you wish.

S: Thank you. Did you see the Olympics opening ceremony?

MATTHEW: You changed your thought—but I see that unless I was aware of that event, I couldn't answer your "real" question. Yes, dear one, I was in and out of your room throughout the time you and Bob watched the TV program. Often your thoughts flitted to me, so I responded in presence to more closely share your thrill at seeing the ceremony and glimpses of Torino, where you'll be speaking next fall.

I'll keep the floor, if I may, and state the question that frequently was in your mind during those hours: Will the mentions of peace in the ceremony help to overcome the dire happenings elsewhere in the world? While I could answer simply "yes," an explanation of the impact of the games will be of interest, I think. The unity of high spirits, appreciation of the beauty expressed in all the ceremony's performances, and the thrill of anticipation of the athletes and all in attendance was akin to your sun beaming such extraordinary rays of rejoicing that it showered your solar system with sparks of its divinity. That kind of energy is too intensive to maintain, but its lingering effects are like sun sparks of heightened life force throughout your planet.

That evening's unity of spirit will evolve into as many individuals as are participants in the games as they "go for the gold" and all who are rooting for them. The electricity of the ceremony, including its elements focused on peace, will be forgotten in the excitement of the competition. There will be the few triumphant winners and the many with heartaches as a medal eludes them by a minute fraction of a second or a point, or a poor showing of their truly remarkable skills. As the games proceed, the energy will continue to be emotional peaks and valleys among the athletes and the audience, and that is what will be emanating from Torino. So it's more accurate to say that balance will result from the various levels of energy generated in the days between the arrivals and the departures, and in balance there is light.

Along with the balance is the impact of the love that is being expressed by the entire city and its many visitors. There is love of country, love of the beauty in the spectacular ceremony and the breathtaking scenery, love of the sports, love among the athletes for their team members, love for and from supportive family and friends, and yes, love of peace that permits this gathering in Torino. If you remember that love in its myriad expressions brings light to the heart and flows outward to all lives those souls touch, you'll see that the exponential effect of this collective love rises beyond the energy of the ceremony and the games and remains within the hearts of the people who remain and those who leave. The seed of peace that was planted in the thoughts of all at the scene and the millions of TV watchers has the same exponential energetic effect.

Now I'll mention the contrast between the Olympics and another recent sporting event, the Super Bowl football game that also was well attended and viewed on TV by millions. Missing from the latter is the love that emanated from the Olympic games, the seed of peace, the heart and courage of the athletes, and the balanced energy. Instead, there is professional gambling, large monetary awards to the winning team, and rivalry in a different essence of competition. While team spirit and supporters of each side were indeed aspects of this event, this too was different energetically, the "kill 'em" attitude of the strong desire to win.

Still another difference is how this game was regarded by many around the world: An extravaganza whose ticket prices and overall costs are shameful in a country where the separation between the rich and the poor keeps growing; where homelessness and poverty is increasing, and social services and health care for the neediest is decreasing; where most of the survivors of the hurricanes have been left in desperate straits by the government; where there is continuing erosion of civil rights, growing numbers of military casualties with life-changing physical and psychic damage and yet more saber-rattling by the administration in the ravaged Middle East.

The energy surrounding the Super Bowl game decreased the light on the planet and the energy of the Olympics will raise that dip in intensity to the balance I mentioned. In the continuum, this is a "done deal."

S: Thank you for all of that, Matthew—it's considerably more insightful about those two events than I could have imagined. Maybe most others too, I'd think. A reader forwarded an article about something that could be UFOs visible over Torino a few days ago. Do you know about that—if so, were they ET spacecraft, and if they were, why were they there?

MATTHEW: Oh yes, we know, and yes, they were ETs' crafts. Not that there will be any media publicity about their appearance, but for those who saw them, it was more evidence of the proximity of your space family, which could be only with peaceful intentions or long ago they would have shown you otherwise.

S: There's a question about ETs that "some people have been experiencing," according to the writer, who didn't say how except that "they didn't seem to present any fear." She wrote that they were described to her as "between 5 & 6 feet tall, dark grey-brown wrinkled skin, football-shaped heads with large insect-like black eyes and antennae-like things protruding from top of head and around chin area, thin lean bodies with long arms that hang ape-like down to their knees." She's asking who they are and what they want.

MATTHEW: Well, that appearance stumps me. I have met members of possibly 1000 civilizations whose forms and features differ, and I have visited some who have no form at all, but I haven't seen any who meet that description. I've learned in my travels throughout several galaxies that the more spiritually and intellectually advanced the civilization, the more beautiful they are. It takes a great deal of intellectual evolvement to travel to Earth, and since those visitors apparently posed no threat, they must mean no harm. But souls with that degree of intelligence can manifest any appearance they wish, so it's puzzling why they didn't choose something you would consider more attractive. It's possible that the individuals who saw them may be seriously coloring the actual appearance by their concept of ETs from entertainment venues.

S: And it could be that the writer believed someone's idea of a prank. I've heard from at least a dozen people who want you to comment on the furor over the cartoons of Mohammed that were published in a Danish newspaper. All are concerned about how far the situation may escalate. One asked if this is a karmic situation in action, another asked if this will incur karma for Denmark, and others are concerned about world opinion and the effect on the country's economy.

MATTHEW: We're all very well aware of this lamentable situation wherein the indignation of the Muslims is wholly justified. The cartoons, which are not representative of the Danish people any more than they are representative of sensitive, peace-loving people in any other country, are not karmic in nature nor will the effects produce karma for Denmark—it is individual souls who accrue karma and choose lifetimes to balance other experiencing. While areas of your planet have retained the negativity of blood-spilling on their soil and store it as kinetic energy, current national boundaries in this are meaningless. Releasing the pent-up negativity, which is essential to Earth's well being and passage into lighter density, is the service of souls who chose to embody in those areas specifically to help in transmuting the negativity into light.

There will be some economic repercussions for Denmark because that is part of this clever maneuver that was designed by a few dark minds and which has succeeded in line with their expectations because others in the Illuminati camp keep stirring up the crowds to extend their outrage and destruction. The dark forces know that this kind of emotional outpouring is something that light workers on and off the planet cannot prevent or ameliorate, and it is a solid accomplishment for those forces. It puts a global blinder on the Illuminati's covert activities while their lower ranks are igniting turmoil over the cartoons to the greatest extent they can. We don't know how far this situation may escalate because the energy field of potential regarding it is chaotic. All we can be certain of at this point is that it won't lead to World War III. That certainty is based in Earth's expressed desire that no major war ever again will occur on her planetary body, and your benevolent ET family on and off-planet will prevent any dark attempts to circumvent Earth's wishes.

S: They definitely can prevent the free will choice of those who would try to start that kind of war?

MATTHEW: Yes, by God's authorization, and they have the intelligence network both on Earth's surface and in your skies along with the advanced technology to do that.

S: That could relieve the fear of all who must be feeling that another world war is a potential, maybe even a likely outcome. Several readers asked for your recommendations in dealing with fear, their own and others', and one mentioned this in connection with religious fundamentalists who are trapped in fear and act out of bigotry.

MATTHEW: Fear, which often is an obsession with a "what if," is fruitless at the least and can lead to darkness at the worst. The worst is that fear is a magnified energy form, or attachment, that puts a barrier between the soul and light and makes the soul vulnerable to being taken over by the dark forces. That is why we repeatedly have urged you NOT to go into fear!

Getting past fear is the same process as overcoming any other emotion or characteristic you wish to be free of—change your thoughts. When the object or situation you fear comes to mind, shake it off with a thought about the opposite—perhaps a successful outcome of an endeavor or a safe return home or sufficiency to pay bills or recovery from an illness, or anything of a pleasant nature that is sure to lighten your mind and heart. While it is true that what you fear may be something that your soul chose as one of this lifetime's experiences, the sensation of fear about it will not help you—it will preclude your managing the circumstances to the optimum extent possible. Like anything else that must be mastered through practice, changing a thought from negative to positive also requires practice. You can do this for yourself, but for another, you can only give the suggestion.

The fear of religious zealots is different. This is a mass captivity by the dark forces that eons past realized that the downfall of a civilization could best be accomplished by different belief systems within it, and religions emerged as the best way to divide and conquer. Your recorded history proves that that means has indeed been effective.

Mother, the information I relay through you is respected as being straightforward, the truth of the world situation as we see it unfolding from this high station of spiritual clarity. In this message I intended to speak of the progress of both the light and the dark forces, and while I did touch upon this in the different energies generated by the Olympic games and the Super Bowl game, and more so in the effects of the published caricatures of Mohammed, there is more to tell and this is an appropriate place.

Earth knows that her steady ascension pace is going to leave many of her souls behind, but maintaining her speed is imperative to save as many others of her life forms as she can. Many, many millions will not make the journey with her into the higher vibrations due to their immersion in fear; hatred of long-time enemies and obsession with revenge; greed and retention of riches from corrupt activities; refusal to give up control over others; determination to continue wars and other violence; non-acceptance of the facts to be revealed about the deception that has formed belief systems, most especially religious dogma and to a much lesser extent, incorrect scientific beliefs. This is NOT a judgment call or punishment for those souls! It is simply the laws of the universe in operation wherein only lighted and enlightened souls can physically survive in the vibratory level of Earth's destination. Each soul's lifetime energy registration automatically will draw it to the world that offers opportunities to overcome the various emotions and characteristics that cannot exist in the light intensity of the higher vibrations.

Before Earth reaches the frequencies where the bodies of those souls will die and the souls themselves will go to their respective new worlds, many more millions will die from the causes that will continue a while longer: military bloodshed, fanatical vengeance, diseases, pollution of your air and water and soil, starvation, transport vehicle failures on land and at sea, geophysical events. Some deaths will be within the souls‚ contracts and others will be by amended contracts because their original agreement did not include the adversities that are much more severe than they chose. Through divine grace the latter group will receive full karmic credit for the lifetime, which means that in Nirvana they will complete the chosen experiencing and move on into a realm appropriate for their spiritual evolution instead of having to experience the unfinished karmic lessons somewhere in another third density embodiment.

I am telling you this state of your world so you will be spiritually and emotionally prepared for the challenges as the last of the polarity on your planet runs its course. Please know that there is no reason to feel discouraged or pessimistic; it is not a step backward in the acceleration of the light that is propelling Earth along her ascension route. We emphasize yet again the vital importance of remaining steadfast in the light, and add that patience will be your ally during the progress that isn't apparent to you.

Mother, I know there are many questions about happenings within the US government, and this is a good time to address those in general, if not specifically, with the preface that changes underway but not yet obvious are occurring globally, not only in the United States where the rest of the world looks to for clues to their own future. We cannot determine a timeframe for the downfall of the Bush administration or other oppressive regimes because the dark forces influencing these Earth puppets are being refueled by the widespread fear of the situation in the Middle East—the Muslims‚ outrage and the potential of expanding the warfront into Iran—but we have the advantage of knowing the "future" in the continuum, where the hard fall of President Bush, his closest supporters, and other world leaders who are darkly-inclined already is accomplished and so is the abolishment of unfair laws and the end of injustices in judicial and law enforcement bodies.

Even mainstream media, which globally still is largely Illuminati-controlled, is reporting some of the well-founded accusations against Bush and other national leaders as well as protests against old, new and proposed restrictive legislation, but assuredly they're not reporting that the unstoppable momentum of the light is unseating all repressive leaders and repealing those laws. The dark forces—that vast and powerful force field in the universe—understand that the end of their influence on Earth, even if in this moment is eroding erratically rather than steadily, is predestined. Since surrendering is not within the nature of that energy, only increased light intensity can vanquish its presence, and that is what is happening.

Once again I tell you, Earth's ascension out of the vestiges of darkness is assured; each of you is responsible for your own journey. Mother, I'm going to continue by answering the questions on your list that deal with individuals' concerns as to whether they are on the "right pathway" to accompany Earth. You are on the "right pathway" when you know that you are a part of God, that your soul is eternal and there is no separation of you from God or any other soul in the universe. When you know that love is the most powerful energy in the universe. When you are steadfast in your vision of a world at peace, where all souls are living in harmony. You willingly and generously share your resources. You see the work of the darkness and do not judge those who have fallen under its influence. You feel compassion for the suffering and the fearful, but do not go into despair or fear yourself. You offer, but do not impose upon any others' your own beliefs. You listen to the voice of your soul by heeding your conscience and trusting your intuition. You respect all life forms as God's creations. You see the beauty of Nature and, in sad moments, allow that beauty to lift your spirits. You live from your heart, where your soul expresses, more so than in mental calculating.

That isn't necessarily a complete list and I did not give it as mandatory beliefs and attitudes, but only a guideline to reassure you who recognize yourselves in those ways that you are indeed on the "right pathway."

And now, dear soul, please choose the next question.

S: First I want to thank you for all of that insight. Questions about the anti-Christ are coming in and others are asking somewhat related questions: Is Maitreya a reincarnation of Jesus? Is a boy in Nepal a reincarnation of the Buddha? Are avatars and/or ascended masters reincarnating to help with Earth's ascension?

MATTHEW: I am glad those questions were asked so I can clarify the misconceptions they denote. "Anti-Christ" is a term designed to instill the fear that a person posing as Jesus in his "second coming" really is Satan, come to betray the true Christians, as the fundamentalist Bible believers see themselves, and sabotage "the raptures." The existence of a powerful energy force field of negativity is unknown to the believers, which is another aim of the dark agenda, so more correctly "anti-Christ" refers to the dark forces whose objective is to capture souls through fear and ignorance.

Maitreya is not a reincarnation of any soul; it is its own soul energy of highest light from the Christed realm, the realm closest to Creator where the soul who incarnated as Jesus and the Buddha also had its beginning. No one on Earth now is the single embodiment of the Christed energy; however, that powerful love force has infused Earth with its healing powers and is available to everyone on the planet who accepts the light. It is a similar situation with the souls that you call avatars and ascended masters; they need not take on Earth bodies to inspire, uplift, guide, and motivate you via the light that they are beaming throughout your planet.

S: Thank you for those clarifications—maybe another is needed here. In a brief statement of a book's premise, someone wrote that "for millions of years about 8% of the universe has been under the predominant control of dark powers due to an unexplainable spiritual cancer that invaded this universe from the outside; throughout our history, humans have been afflicted by this sickness; supreme Creator God has effectively been excluded from our sector of the universe for millions of years; although our higher guides and the Masters have been challenging this dark power, we couldn't have knowledge of this because it would have been demoralizing to most of us; and now the truth can be told because the light forces finally are on the offensive to reverse the spread of the cancer." Your comment on this, please.

MATTHEW: I'm not comfortable giving my view of a book's information that I know nothing about except someone's few comments on it, but in addressing only the statement above, I do know that there is some truth in it. The dark powers can be likened to a spiritual cancer; that energy did enter this universe as it melded with another universe, although only mutual benefit was the intent of both; "sickness" is an apt expression for the effects of the dark control, which are coming to light, literally, in the revelations about the history of deceit and corruption on Earth; and the truth still will be demoralizing to many.

However, NEVER has Creator, the supreme being of the cosmos, or God, the supreme being of this universe, been excluded from ANY part of this universe; NEVER in all of the civilizations in your planet's history, eons of which the masses consciously know nothing about, were all souls "afflicted"—always some knew their godselves and never were tempted by the wily entreaties of the darkness; and ALWAYS the forces of light have battled the forces of darkness in this universe—only when souls refused the help of the light did these beings refrain. I cannot say that 8% of the universe is or is not under dark control, but if that were so, with 92% being light, the dark contingent would long since have fled back to whence it came rather than do battle with that intensity.

S: Thank you! Just a comment before the next question—someone wrote that not all sea salt even in health food stores has the same ingredients, so it would be wise to speak with a clerk who's knowledgeable about the kind with the most beneficial qualities. The next question is a really different take on energy, which may be good about now: "Is it true that energy stays in clothes that babies and little children have worn, so hand-me-downs‚ isn't a good idea?"

MATTHEW: And a very reasonable question, because the energy of previous users does remain in items to some extent although generally it does not affect the new user. The emanations of all who contribute to the fabrication of a house, car, clothing, tool, appliance, textbook, meal or anything else in common usage leave energetic marks that usually are neutral—that is, without any intent on the contributors‚ part other than to do a satisfactory job. Consider the many sources of energy in antique furniture and ancient buildings, from the designers and builders to the succession of owners or occupants, and especially the energy in artistic creations that are held in high esteem and are prized possessions.

The energy in haunted buildings is a different story—in those cases, there may be nuisance or even harmful intent with energy streamers that people can feel and sometimes hear and see. The energy put into objects used for hexes, or voodoo curses, definitely is done with intent to either harm or to undo a prior harm-intended hex.

But as for children's clothing that has been outgrown, the only potential unsavory energy I can imagine would come from the reluctant inheritor who vehemently objects to wearing "hand-me-downs."

S: That was a nice light touch, Mash! This question came in an email months ago, but I just discovered it. "What is the role of the Findhorn Community and how can it best serve the planet during this time of transition?"

MATTHEW: I welcome this opportunity to mention the joy and gratitude among all of us at this station for the light that for several decades has been increasingly generated by the Findhorn Community. Their "role" and best service to the planet is simply to keep on doing what they set out to do. What started as a tiny but dedicated project in Scotland, to live in communion with Nature, has grown into a world renowned spiritually-based endeavor. The couple who initiated the project are highly evolved souls who came in with the inspiration that later was manifested into being. We hope that readers who are not aware of the Findhorn Community will be motivated to learn of its founding purpose, living in harmony with Nature, which immeasurably enriches all of Earth's life forms.

Mother, you are thinking of space limitations, and that was a lovely closing thought for this message. I add only the ever-abiding love and assistance of all light beings in spirit—we are with you in every moment and every step of your journey in this time of profound changes that are bringing ever nearer peace in your world.

LOVE and PEACE

Thousands Would Die in US Strikes on Iran, Says Study

By Ewen MacAskill - The Guardian UK

13 February 2006

Report warns of effects of American or Israeli strikes. Military operations would mean long confrontation.

A surprise American or Israeli air strike on Iranian nuclear sites could cause a large number of civilian as well as military casualties, says a report published today.

The report, Iran: Consequences of a War, written by Professor Paul Rogers and published by the Oxford Research Group, draws comparisons with Iraq. It says the civilian population in that country had three weeks to prepare for war in 2003, giving people the chance to flee potentially dangerous sites. But Prof Rogers says attacks on Iranian facilities, most of which are in densely populated areas, would be surprise ones, allowing no time for such evacuations or other precautions.

"Military deaths in this first wave of attacks would be expected to be in the thousands," he says. "Civilian deaths would be in the many hundreds at least, particularly with the requirement to target technical support for the nuclear and missile infrastructure, with many of the factories being located in urban areas."

The death toll would eventually be much higher if Iran took retaliatory action and the United States responded, or if the US took pre-emptive military action in addition to strikes on nuclear sites.

Prof Rogers, of the University of Bradford's peace studies department, says: "A military operation against Iran would not ... be a short-term matter but would set in motion a complex and long-lasting confrontation. It follows that military action should be firmly ruled out and alternative strategies developed."

US and other western critics of Tehran say the government there is intent on securing a nuclear weapons capability. The Iranians deny this, saying they are pursuing civilian nuclear energy. The issue could still be resolved diplomatically, but both the US and Israel have said the option of air strikes remains open.

Prof Rogers says the aim of an attack would be to set back Iran's nuclear programme by at least five years. He says Britain could be drawn in as US aircraft would probably use UK bases.

He lists the expected targets as the Tehran Research Reactor, a radioisotope production facility, a range of nuclear-related laboratories, and the Kalaye Electric Company, all in Tehran, and facilities in Isfahan and Natanz.

"The new reactor nearing completion at Bushehr would be targeted, although this could be problematic once the reactor is fully fuelled and goes critical some time in 2006," he says. "Once that has happened, any destruction of the containment structure could lead to serious problems of radioactive dispersal affecting not just the Gulf coast but west Gulf seaboards in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates."

He adds: "All the initial attacks would be undertaken more-or-less simultaneously, in order to kill as many of the technically competent staff as possible, therefore doing the greatest damage to longer-term prospects."

Iran would be unable to prevent such an attack, as it has only limited air defences. But Prof Rogers says it has a large arsenal of responses. It could:

* withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty and pursue speedy development of nuclear weapons capability;
* encourage retaliatory action against Israel by the Lebanese-based Hizbullah group, which has missiles capable of hitting Haifa and several other Israeli cities;
* close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main access routes for oil from the Gulf;
* send Iranian paramilitary units into states such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates;
* or order Iranian Revolutionary Guards to step up links with insurgents in Iraq.

Prof Rogers says a US or Israeli attack could also help al-Qaida by increasing the anti-US mood in the region and beyond.

(...) The possibility of war against Iran presents a geo-strategic and geopolitical problem of far more complexity than the bombing and occupation of Iraq. Scandal-plagued Halliburton, the oil services company once headed by Vice President Dick was secretly working with one of Iran's top nuclear program officials on natural gas related projects and, allegedly, selling the officials' oil development company key components for a nuclear reactor, according to Halliburton sources with intimate knowledge into both companies' business dealings. Just last week a National Security Council report said Iran was a decade away from acquiring a nuclear bomb. That time frame could arguably have been significantly longer if Halliburton, which just reported a 284 percent increase in its fourth quarter profits due to its Iraq reconstruction contracts, was not actively providing the Iranian government with the financial means to build a nuclear weapon. Iran Is Prepared to Retaliate, Experts Warn

By Bryan Bender -The Boston Globe

12 February 2006

Washington - Iran is prepared to launch attacks using long-range missiles, secret commando units, and terrorist allies planted around the globe in retaliation for any strike on the country's nuclear facilities, according to new US intelligence assessments and military specialists.

US and Israeli officials have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to thwart its nuclear ambitions. Among the options are airstrikes on suspected nuclear installations or covert action to sabotage the Iranian program.

But military and intelligence analysts warn that Iran - which a recent US intelligence report described as "more confident and assertive" than it has been since the early days of the 1979 Islamic revolution - could unleash reprisals across the region, and perhaps even inside the United States, if the hard-line regime came under attack.

"When the Americans or Israelis are thinking about [military force], I hope they will sit down and think about everything the ayatollahs could do to make our lives miserable and what we will do to discourage them," said John Pike, director of the think tank GlobalSecurity.org, referring to Iran's religious leaders.

"There could be a cycle of escalation."

President Bush has said military force should be the last resort in international efforts to deter Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. Yet Bush has stated unequivocally that the United States would not tolerate an Iranian nuclear arsenal, which the CIA estimates could be in place in three to 10 years. Iran maintains its nuclear program is solely aimed at producing electricity, not weapons.

Israel, which Iran's new president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has threatened to annihilate, asserts that Tehran is much closer to going nuclear and has been far more direct with its counter-threats.

The Israel Defense Forces, which destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981, has said it is perfecting ways to launch a preventative strike against Iranian nuclear sites, including outfitting its Air Force with American-made, bunker-busting munitions.

US intelligence officials have said that Iran, which fought a war with Iraq from 1980-1988 that cost one million lives, still has the most threatening armed forces in the immediate region. Its combined ground forces are estimated at about 800,000 personnel. The CIA has concluded that Iran is steadily enhancing its ability to project its military power, including by threatening international shipping.

But it is Iran's unconventional weapons and tactics - rather than its conventional military - that would pose the greatest threat, according to the intelligence officials.

Bush's new intelligence chief, John D. Negroponte, outlining the conclusions reached by a variety of US spy agencies, warned in his first overall annual threat assessment this month to Congress that Iran is capable of sparking a much wider conflict it comes under threat.

A major worry: newly acquired long-range missiles. Obtained with the assistance of North Korea, the Shahab 3 could strike Israel and perhaps even hit the periphery of Europe, according to a recent report by the Pentagon's National Air and Space Intelligence Center.

The missiles could also be tipped with chemical warheads and threaten US military bases in the region.

Iran is believed to have at least 20 launchers that are frequently moved around the country to avoid detection.

"Iran has an extensive missile-development program and has received support from entities in Russia, China, and North Korea," the Pentagon report said, estimating their range to be at least 800 miles.

New missile designs under development could travel 400 miles farther, it said, while Iran purchased at least a dozen X-55 cruise missiles from Ukraine in 2001 that are capable of carrying a nuclear warhead as far as Italy.

Meanwhile, Iranian agents and members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, widely believed to have a large presence in Iraq, could attempt to foment an uprising by the their fellow Shi'ite majority in Iraq or join insurgents in directly attacking US troops there, Negroponte warned.

He reported that Tehran has "constrained" itself in Iraq because it is generally satisfied with the political trends in favor of the Shi'ite majority and to avoid giving the United States another excuse to attack Iran. But that could change if Iran were targeted militarily.

A leading Shi'ite cleric in Iraq, Moqtada al-Sadr, whose militia has clashed with US troops and rival Shi'ite groups, vowed in a visit to Tehran last month to defend Iran if it were attacked.

The assessment presented by Negroponte said the Iranian regime already provides "guidance and training" to militant groups in Iraq and "has been responsible for at least some of the increasing lethality of anticoalition attacks by providing Shia militants with the capability to build" improvised explosive devices.

Government and private analysts assert that Iran's intelligence apparatus and Revolutionary Guard Corps could cause serious damage to US efforts to pacify Iraq.

"The Iranian ayatollahs may deploy an 'asymmetric' answer and incite a Shi'ite rebellion in Iraq," the respected Russian military publication "Defense and Security," warned last month, referring to a military strategy that employs such tactics as guerrilla warfare. "That would be disastrous for the United States."

Iran, believed to be responsible for the bombing of a US Air Force barracks in Saudi Arabia in 1996, also would be expected to enlist its terrorist allies around the world to come to its aid if attacked, US officials and private specialists contend.

"Tehran continues to support a number of terrorist groups, viewing this capability as a critical regime safeguard by deterring US and Israeli attacks, distracting and weakening Israel, and enhancing Iran's regional influence through intimidation," according to Negroponte's assessment to Congress.

Primary among them is Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist group that killed 241 US Marines when it bombed a Beirut barracks in 1983.

"Lebanese Hezbollah is Iran's main terrorist ally, which . . . has a worldwide support network and is capable of attacks against US interests if it feels its Iranian patron is threatened," according to the report.

"They have all kinds of people that would like to embrace martyrdom," Pike said of Iran, raising the specter that a terrorist group allied with Iran would be capable of launching attacks inside the United States to avenge a strike against Iran.

Intelligence officials also point out that Iran controls a small island at the mouth the Strait of Hormuz and could use missiles and gunboats to temporarily shut off access to the economically vital Persian Gulf, sparking an oil crisis.

"Military attack is not the solution to this problem," Mohammad Mohaddessin, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the leading dissident group, said in a telephone interview from Paris. "The regime is absolutely focusing on nonconventional responses. Missiles and terrorist operations are the strong points."

"Killing One Person Is Murder: Killing Thousands At 9/11 Is Domestic Policy": This Bumper Sticker Slogan On Seattle Resident's Car Has Led To MKULTRA Tactics Used Against Her.

Many others like Susan Elmes of Seattle have had 'physical abuse and gang stalking' tactics used against them for simply expressing their freedom of speech rights. Although spygate is a problem, FBI/CIA hired thugs are in force doing the administration's dirty work as illegal wiretapping and surveillance campaign goes on in the background.

11 Feb 2006 By Greg Szymanski

The Bush administration spy campaign is reaching epidemic proportions, as well as taking a page right out of Nazi Germany or the old Soviet Union 'destruction of civil liberties handbook.'

"The state of the Union is deplorable," said Seattle citizen, Susan Elmes, who recently has been tailed and harassed by government agents for displaying anti-administration bumper stickers on her car and trying to organize 9/11 truth rallies at local libraries. "It's gone beyond spying. They even entered my house and tried to poison my cats."

To show how the U.S. has deteriorated as a country, Elmes was investigated by government thugs for bumper stickers like "Killing One Person Is Murder: Killing Thousands At 9/11 Is Domestic Policy" as well as such things like MKULTRA street hacks carve satanic symbols in library tables during a recent 9/11 film presentation.

And what gets lost in the Bush Spygate story, where people are calling for his impeachment for bugging phone lines through the NSA, are the horrendous violations of civil liberties going on to thousands of others like Elmes, violations sanctioned by the Nazi-like White House authority run by a paranoid coward Bush.

While constitutional law scholars like Professor John Turley, formerly of Tulane University, rake Bush over the coals for illegally authorizing intelligence gathering by the FBI, CIA and NSA, the center of attention should be on the authorization of "torture and abuse" by street thugs, not merely the wiretapping and data gathering.

"They gather data and wiretap so they can then muscle in on the activist organizations with hired street gangs and MKULTRA-trained individuals in order to stop dissenters before they reach the critical mass," said one former San Diego Air Force Captain now trying to expose the rampant neo con corruption filtering down to even local peace and charitable organizations, not in step with the Bush agenda.

And to support the Air Force Captain's views, Professor Turley added:

"This is one of the most serious constitutional crises that we've ever faced in the country. The president's use of the war resolution borders on absurdity. To have the attorney general putting forward an interpretation that he cannot possibly believe is true -- because he's not a moron -- is deeply disturbing."

And taking a close look down the highways and byways of America all road signs lead directly to tyranny and a police state, where no one dare dissent for fear of government reprisals, including imprisonment.

Regarding the much publicized Spygate story, Bush is again lying through his teeth with recent statements, saying the NSA policy is limited only to overseeing phone calls involving members of al-Qaeda.

Further, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said recently the White House has the authority for the clandestine eavesdropping program since Bush is a "wartime President."

However, several former CIA agents, including former analyst Ray McGovern, think otherwise, saying Bush has grossly overstepped his bounds and should be impeached for a number of reasons, including the unauthorized spying campaign.

Another CIA agent who recently left the agency over complete disgust over the Nazi-like spy campaign, recently was quoted as saying by the popular Capital Hills Blues internet news site:

"It is unbelievable. We spend more time gathering intel on Americans than we do on real enemies of our country."

Recently, the ACLU has tried to come to the rescue of several peace groups, one in Philadelphia and another in Vermont, filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)request in an attempt to get Pentagon files on the suspected agents who infiltrated the groups.

Although a good first step, several activists across the country, including Elmes, said the ACLU has become an ineffective, government infiltrated organization itself wasting time on legal battles that never amount "to hill of beans."

One activist in Los Angeles who lost faith in the ACLU's "watered down" legal battles against the neo cons, said what's needed are "fearless prosecutors" at the state and local levels, willing to buck city hall and make criminal arrests against the undercover agents and street thugs violating the people's rights.

"I think the people are fed up and too much faith is put in a corrupted ACLU that gets mired in useless legal battles," said the LA activist.

Although the ACLU has filed numerous FOIA requests in the past for groups like Veterans for Peace and Greenpeace in places like Maine, Rhode Island, California and Georgia, the Bush administration in the past has fought off these "paperwork threats," treating them like annoying flies on a hot summer's day.

Critics of the Bush administration's evasive spying policies, including ACLU lawyer Ben Wizner, said it's difficult to win "these types of cases" in the present-day political climate since Bush is able to claim "executive privilege" under the corrupt USA Patriot Act.

"How can we believe that the National Security Agency is intercepting only al Qaeda phone calls when we have evidence that the Pentagon is keeping tabs on student activists in Pittsburgh," said Wizner.

Besides the intrusive NSA policy of monitoring millions of calls, emails and other forms of electronic communications, Bush wants to expand the use "National Security Letters," a method the NSA uses to acquire sensitive data from banks and business about innocent civilians based under the erroneous use of national security.

It has been learned that the FBI and NSA daily issues hundreds if not thousands of National Security Letters, but is also under the expanded Patriot Act protected from ever having to provide a legal reason for issuing the letters as well as revealing the content of the information received.

And as Bush insists on expanding his snooping authority under the revised Patriot Act up for passage in Congress, reports surfaced last week at any one given moment of a typical working day over 500 innocent Americans are being illegally wiretapped or having communications checked through intrusive government data gathering techniques.

Ironically this number first surfaced in the New York Times, a publication that could have prevented the illegal snooping in the first place if it exercised its civic duty and reported the "real news" in the first place.

Gonzales Takes the Fifth: Time for the U.S. Senate to Re-awaken to Reality

LaRouche PAC has issued a new press release, based on comments by Democratic Party statesman Lyndon LaRouche on the testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. LaRouche warned that Gonzales' "contempt for the Constitution," demonstrated by his refusal to answer questions from Senators about the illegal NSA domestic spying program, shows the commitment of Cheney and Bush to push further for unchecked, unconstitutional powers.

LaRouche noted that this power grab is especially dangerous because of the British-inspired push for a new war against Iran. British Synarchist political and financial networks are using both sides of the potential war as their patsies - Cheney on the U.S. side and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the Iranian side. The result and aim of this British-inspired war is a near-term collapse of the global monetary system, in which Synarchist financiers would control commodities and their prices, as governments fall into chaos. (For more information about what's really behind the Iran situation and the spread of a "clash of civilizations" between the West and the Muslim world, read an article by leading LaRouche associate Jeff Steinberg, at http://www.larouchepac.com/pages/otherartic_files/2006/060204_iran_fuse.htm )

Anyone who opposes the destruction of our Constitutional system and a policy of economic chaos and war must spread LaRouche's urgent advice: "Under these circumstances, there is no alternative but for responsible members of the U.S. Senate to assert their Constitutional duty against the assumption of Carl Schmitt-like powers by the Executive, as demonstrated by Gonzales today. This reckless pursuit of fascist 'executive authority' must be halted now, before the Administration is dragged by the British into the next war, which they have scheduled for the immediate months ahead."

France secretly upgrades capacity of nuclear arsenal

· Modification increases range of missiles
· Altitude bomb to knock out electronic systems

Kim Willsher in Paris

February 10, 2006

France has secretly modified its nuclear arsenal to increase the strike range and accuracy of its weapons. The move comes weeks after President Jacques Chirac warned that states which threatened the country could face the "ultimate warning" of a nuclear retaliation.

A military source quoted yesterday by the Libération newspaper claimed France had tinkered with its nuclear weapons to improve their strike capability and make this threat more credible.

The source said there had been two major changes: the bombs can now be fired at high altitude to create an "electromagnetic impulsion" to destroy the enemy's computer and communications systems; and the number of nuclear warheads has been reduced to increase the missiles' range and precision.During his surprise speech, which was made in January, President Chirac said: "The number of nuclear warheads has been reduced in certain of the missiles in our submarines".

Military experts said this was not a step towards disarmament, but a move to improve the performance of the weapons. Until now each submarine carried 16 French-made M45 missiles, each fitted with six nuclear warheads. After being fired, each warhead would separate to hit a different target, in effect giving each submarine 96 nuclear bombs.

In reducing the number of warheads, down to one per missile in some cases, the weapon is lighter and has a longer range. It can also be targeted more accurately.

Libération speculates that while potential targets are "secret", it is clear they include the Middle East or Asia, and that its military contacts suggest the changes are aimed at adding "flexibility" to France's nuclear deterrent.

"These evolutions are aimed at better taking into account the psychology of the enemy," defence minister Michèle Alliot-Marie said after President Chirac's warning in January.

In a speech to MPs, she added: "A potential enemy may think that France, given its principles, might hesitate to use the entire force of its nuclear arsenal against civilian populations.

"Our country has modified its capacity for action and from now on has the possibility to target the control centres of an eventual enemy."

French government sources said the president's speech, given at a nuclear submarine base in Brittany, was not targeted specifically at Iran - despite Tehran's decision to continue its nuclear programme - or at individual terrorist organisations, but at countries that posed a direct threat to France itself.

It is also seen as an attempt to justify the more than •3.5bn (£2.4bn) a year France spends to maintain its estimated 300-350 nuclear weapons more than a decade after the end of the cold war.

"The ultimate warning restores the principle of dissuasion," the military source told Libération. The president is not talking about a choice between an apocalypse or nothing at all."

The paper says according to its information "ultimate warning" could take two new forms.

The most demonstrative would be to fire a relatively weak warhead into a deserted zone far from centres of power and habitation. The more radical option would be to explode a bomb at an extremely high altitude with the aim of creating a brief but enormously strong electromagnetic field which would disable or destroy all non-protected electronic systems in the area.

During the cold war France's "ultimate threat" involved firing nuclear bombs into Soviet military divisions and large cities.

Starving polar bears shame Bush to act

By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor

12 February 2006

Starving polar bears are presenting an unprecedented challenge to George Bush's refusal to take action over global warming - and may succeed where environmentalists and other governments have failed in getting him to curb pollution.

Despite the President's obdurate stance on climate change, the US administration last week took the first steps towards officially listing the bear as an endangered species. The Arctic ice on which the iconic animal lives is melting away as the world heats up and, if the listing is finalised, the Bush administration will be obliged to modify its pollution policies to try to save the bear.

The move comes as the President faces attack for the first time over global warming from some of his strongest allies. Evangelical Christian leaders last week took out TV ads urging action, while, in Britain, Tony Blair has warned that the world has less than seven years to get to grips with climate change.

The Prime Minister made his statement on Tuesday, the same day the US Fish and Wildlife Service started the process of listing the polar bear in response to a lawsuit by environmental groups to get government protection for the species. It said the groups had presented "substantial scientific and commercial information indicating that listing the polar bear may be warranted".

The bears are vulnerable to climate change because they depend entirely on the polar ice to catch seals, their main prey. The seals swim too fast in open water, and so bears have to lie in wait for them to surface for air through holes and cracks in the ice. The seals congregate in the shallow waters of the continental shelves, and the bears can reach them only when the sea is frozen. But the ice now recedes far out to sea every summer.

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme concludes that the extent of summer ice in the Arctic has shrunk by more than a quarter in the past half-century. The US government's official National Snow and Ice Data Center adds that a "stunning" reduction in sea ice has taken place in the past four years. Last summer an area twice the size of Texas disappeared.

The centre believes that the rate of retreat is accelerating. Worse still for the bears, the melting is starting earlier, depriving them of seals in the spring, when they have always stocked up on food to see them through the summer.

In desperation, more and more polar bears are swimming to land, and marauding through towns and villages. Made fearless by hunger, the half-ton animals have even broken into houses in search of food. One killed a 15-year-old girl in the far western Russian Arctic, while children in the northern Canadian town of Churchill are being taken to school under guard. There is even evidence from north-east Russia that polar bears have taken to eating their own species.

The Fish and Wildlife Service will gather evidence on the state of the bears over the next two months before coming to a decision at the end of the year. But Rosa Meehan, the head of its marine mammal programme in Anchorage, Alaska, has already said: "It's pretty easy to make a connection between what's happening to sea ice and what might happen to polar bears."

If the bear is listed under the US Endangered Species Act, regulatory agencies would be bound by law to take into account how their decisions would affect it. This could lead to tougher measures to control the spread of pollution that causes global warming, and stricter fuel-economy standards for vehicles.

Polar Bears Being Considered for U.S. Endangered List (February 10, 2006)

The Bush Administration yesterday kicked off a process to determine whether polar bears should be added to the United States endangered species list because their habitat is melting. The action is "a significant acknowledgement of what global warming is doing to the Arctic ice," said Kassie Siegel, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity in Joshua Tree, California. Eau, no: Clean, healthy and pure? Hardly. Bottled water is killing the planet

And our thirst grows, with 154 billion litres drunk in one year.

By Jon Neale and Jonathan Thompson

12 February 2006

Bottled water, the designer-look drink that has become a near-universal ac-cessory of modern life, may be refreshing but it certainly isn't clean. A major new study has concluded that its production is seriously damaging the environment.

It costs 10,000 times more to create the bottled version than it does to produce tap water, say scientists. Huge resources are needed to draw it from the ground, add largely irrelevant minerals, and package and distribute it - sometimes half-way around the world.

The plastic bottles it comes in take 1,000 years to biodegrade, and in industrialised countries, bottled water is no more pure and healthy than what comes out of the tap.
The new study comes from the Earth Policy Institute (EPI), a Washington-based environmental group which has previously alerted the world to melting ice caps, expanding deserts and the environmental threats of a rapidly industrialising China. It points out that the world consumed a staggering 154 billion litres of bottled water in 2004 - an increase of 57 per cent in just half a decade.

Emily Arnold, the report's author, said: "Even in areas where tap water is safe to drink, demand for bottled water is increasing - producing unnecessary garbage and consuming vast quantities of energy."

Leading activists and high profile environmentalists yesterday voiced their approval of the study, and concern over the effect our seemingly insatiable appetite for bottled water is having.

Bob Geldof said: "Bottled water is bollocks. It is the great irony of the 21st century that the most basic things in the supermarket, such as water and bread, are among the most expensive. Getting water from the other side of the world and transporting it to sell here is ridiculous. It is all to do with lifestyle."

Dr Michael Warhurst, Friends of the Earth's senior waste campaigner, said: "It is another product we do not need. Bottled water companies are wasting resources and exacerbating climate change.

"Transport is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions, and transporting water adds to that. We could help reduce these damaging effects if we all simply drank water straight from the tap."

According to the EPI report, tap water is delivered through an "energy-efficient infrastructure", whereas bottled water is often shipped halfway across the world, burning huge amounts of fossil fuels and accelerating global warming. In 2004, for example, Finnish company Nord Water sent 1.4 million bottles of Helsinki tap water to a client in Saudi Arabia. In the same year, producing the plastic bottles that delivered 26 billion litres of water to Americans required more than 1.5 million barrels of oil - enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a year.

Peter Ainsworth, the shadow Secretary of State for Environment, said: "It doesn't take a huge leap of the imagination to work out that they're on to something here. It is obvious that there are big environmental issues around bottled water, and people need to be made more aware of them."

The UK is by no means the biggest consumer of bottled water - the average Briton drank 33 litres in 2004, a sixth of the amount drunk by the typical Italian - but sales are rocketing. Coca-Cola bought the Malvern brand in 1999, seeing it as a remedy to falling sales of soft drinks.

The US's second most imported brand, Fiji, which is shipped around the world from the middle of the South Pacific, has been gaining ground in the UK. Fashionable London restaurant Nobu charges £5 for small bottles, and is even rumoured to boil its rice in it. It has been featured in popular TV series such as Sex and the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and is rumoured to be the choice of Tom Cruise, Ozzy Osbourne, Heather Graham, Jennifer Aniston and Renee Zellweger.

US group implants electronic tags in workers

By Richard Waters in San Francisco

February 12 2006

An Ohio company has embedded silicon chips in two of its employees - the first known case in which US workers have been "tagged" electronically as a way of identifying them.

CityWatcher.com, a private video surveillance company, said it was testing the technology as a way of controlling access to a room where it holds security video footage for government agencies and the police.

Embedding slivers of silicon in workers is likely to add to the controversy over RFID technology, widely seen as one of the next big growth industries.

RFID chips -- inexpensive radio transmitters that give off a unique identifying signal -- have been implanted in pets or attached to goods so they can be tracked in transit.

"There are very serious privacy and civil liberty issues of having people permanently numbered," said Liz McIntyre, who campaigns against the use of identification technology.

But Sean Darks, chief executive of CityWatcher, said the glass-encased chips were like identity cards. They are planted in the upper right arm of the recipient, and "read" by a device similar to a cardreader.

"There's nothing pulsing or sending out a signal," said Mr Darks, who has had a chip in his own arm. "It's not a GPS chip. My wife can't tell where I am."

The technology's defenders say it is acceptable as long as it is not compulsory. But critics say any implanted device could be used to track the "wearer" without their knowledge.

VeriChip -- the US company that made the devices and claims to have the only chips that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration -- said the implants were designed primarily for medical purposes.

So far around 70 people in the US have had the implants, the company said.
