Pilots and aircraft passengers have confirmed sightings of two large Unidentified Flying Objects off the coast of Guernsey. Families and survivors of the dead were duly notified and the bodies were shipped back to the States for private burial but the numbers of the dead, and the wounded, were deliberately kept as low as possible for political reasons. For internal use only, a realistic, and accurate, monthly report was issued for those concerned but it was not made public. When this private report was located by outside sources and sent around the Internet, the site was immediately shut down. This original listing showed that as of mid-2005, the death count in both Iraq and Afghanistan topped 10,000 with 20,000 seriously wounded. By 2007, the death toll has risen to over 15,000 (and rising daily) with officially reported serious woundings (required out of theater hospitalization) at 50,508 as per a report published in the New York Times of January 30, 2007. Six days ago, I was in an armed convoy driving through the McCain-safe streets of Baghdad when a non-existent rocket, made right here and not in Tehran, blasted into a truck carrying fifteen GIs. We had to stop, could not turn around because there were vehicles behind us, frantically trying to flee in all directions, and so I saw what were the shredded remains of all fifteen soldiers littering the street and smoldering. Not the sort of thing to look at, or smell, after breakfast or before lunch. There was not a word of this in our media at home and the official casualty lists, posted on the net didnt mention any of them. There are fifteen that never got reported. Fellow in the next building from me does the casualty reports for transmitting back to the States and he says they publish the names of one in ten. This has been a very bad month with over 300 known dead! That doesnt cover those with faces missing or legs up on a local roof, feeding the birds. This place has become a living hell, what with occasional snipers shooting our men inside the really safe Green Zone, setting off bombs in the heavily guarded Iraqi government compound and blowing up the hand puppet legislators at lunch, mortar rounds from the defeated insurgents slamming down at all times of the day and night, and so on. This crazy Bush surge is not working because we have had to withdraw all our troops from outlying provinces and they have been replaced with local religious crazies who shoot anything that moves. The insurgents have virtually destroyed the power grids so Baghdad gets electric power a few hours a day (at the very best); the water supply has been interfered with so the locals get shit-infested water from the river but we, who are Bringing Bush Democracy to the benighted heathens have our own generators and our own water, carefully filtered of shit and body parts, so we can cheerfully, and proudly, show the world how better the locals are off with our brand of vicious tyranny as opposed to Saddams. They ought to bring Bush and Cheney over here, strip them buck naked and use them as decoys and then wed see a rapid withdrawal for certain! And hear loud cheers as the GIs would be struggling with the locals to pick up presidential and vice presidential body parts as souvenirs.

A British soldier who was in Iraq on his third tour could understand how badly matters had deteriorated. "Of the 40 tents in the base, just five remained unscathed by the end of the tour, he said. 'We were just sitting ducks ... On the last tour we were not mortared very often. This tour, it was two to three times a day. Fifteen mortars and three rockets were fired at us in the first hour we were there.""He added: 'Towards the end of January to March, it was like a siege mentality. We were getting mortared every hour of the day. We were constantly being fired at. We basically didn't sleep for six months. You couldn't rest. Psychologically, it wore you down. Army chiefs fear that a fatal attack on two British soldiers in Iraq last week was a dry run for an attempt on Prince Harrys life, The Times has learnt. The attack was made on a type of vehicle that the Prince will use, and took place in a part of the country where he is due to be deployed as early as next month. The two died when their Scimitar reconnaissance vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb the first time that British soldiers had been killed in a Scimitar as a result of enemy action. The Army fears that extremists deliberately chose the vehicle knowing that the Prince is a troop leader for a Scimitar-equipped unit. Prince Harry faces a kidnap threat from insurgents, who have become active this month even within bases used by the British Army in southern Iraq. Security has been tightened at Camp Sparrowhawk, a base in Maysan Province used by reconnaissance units such as Prince Harrys. (...) President Hugo Chavez has announced that he would formally pull Venezuela out of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "We will no longer have to go to Washington, neither to the IMF, nor the World Bank, not to anyone,'' said Chavez who has already canceled Venezuela's debts to the Washington-based international lending organizations. Chavez said he wanted to formalize Venezuela's exit from the lending institutions which he said are to blame for continued poverty throughout Latin America. He reportedly plans to create a lending bank run by nations in the region. Venezuela has recently repaid its debts to the World Bank five years ahead of schedule, which saved the country eight million dollars. The OPEC country also paid off all its debts to the IMF shortly after Chavez first took office in 1999. IMF closed its offices in the country last year.

Carbon dioxide released by fossil fuel combustion has increased acidity levels of the ocean by 30 percent, and in the decades ahead will create new risks for coral, zooplankton and other creatures that help support North Pacific fisheries, according to researchers who gathered Monday at the University of Washington.In a two-day workshop that ends today, these scientists are reviewing what is known about this grim corner of climate change and brainstorming ways to measure and assess the threats to a marine ecosystem that yields North America's largest seafood harvests. The acidification is caused by the ocean's absorption of carbon dioxide produced by fossil-fuel combustion. Currently, this is about 2 billion tons of the gas each year. As this gas dissolves, it sets off a chemical reaction that produces carbonic acid, which in high-enough concentrations can erode protective shells and other structures of some sea creatures. "We have significant changes in chemistry," said Richard Feely, a Seattle-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration oceanographer who helped to organize the conference. "And if we project over time ... we are talking about massive changes that will take place." Some of the most acidic waters are found in the North Pacific, which has absorbed more carbon dioxide than tropical oceans. The North Pacific appears to be more acidic because it is colder than tropical oceans, which enables it to absorb more carbon, and because it has older, more carbon-rich water than the North Atlantic. In some areas of the North Pacific at depths ranging from about 300 to more than 1,000 feet researchers already have detected a kind of saturation point where acidity causes shells to disintegrate faster than they can grow. This contrasts to the North Atlantic, where the saturation point typically is at depths that exceed 7,500 feet, according to Feely. By the end of the century, these North Pacific saturation zones are expected to expand and extend into much shallower waters. Last year, Feely helped measure the acidity in these zones, and in the years ahead he will start to check the acidity levels of the most productive fishing zone: the Bering Sea.Researchers also are starting to understand the expanding saturation zones' possible effects on sea life. The Murray-Darling basin in south-eastern Australia yields 40 per cent of the country's agricultural produce. But the two rivers that feed the region are so pitifully low that there will soon be only enough water for drinking supplies. Australia is in the grip of its worst drought on record, the victim of changing weather patterns attributed to global warming and a government that is only just starting to wake up to the severity of the position. The Prime Minister, John Howard, a hardened climate- change sceptic, delivered dire tidings to the nation's farmers yesterday. Unless there is significant rainfall in the next six to eight weeks, irrigation will be banned in the principal agricultural area. The legend of Atlantis, the country that disappeared under the sea, may be more than just a myth. Research on the Greek island of Crete suggests Europe's earliest civilisation was destroyed by a giant tsunami. Until about 3,500 years ago, a spectacular ancient civilisation was flourishing in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ancient Minoans were building palaces, paved streets and sewers, while most Europeans were still living in primitive huts. But around 1500BC the people who spawned the myths of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth abruptly disappeared. Now the mystery of their cataclysmic end may finally have been solved. A group of scientists have uncovered new evidence that the island of Crete was hit by a massive tsunami at the same time that Minoan culture disappeared. "The geo-archaeological deposits contain a number of distinct tsunami signatures," says Dutch-born geologist Professor Hendrik Bruins of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. "Minoan building material, pottery and cups along with food residue such as isolated animal bones were mixed up with rounded beach pebbles and sea shells and microscopic marine fauna. "The latter can only have been scooped up from the sea-bed by one mechanism - a powerful tsunami, dumping all these materials together in a destructive swoop," says Professor Bruins. The deposits are up to seven metres above sea level, well above the normal reach of storm waves. "An event of ferocious force hit the coast of Crete and this wasn't just a Mediterranean storm," says Professor Bruins. (...) But what caused the tsunami? The scientists have obtained radiocarbon dates for the deposits that show the tsunami could have hit the coast at exactly the same time as an eruption of the Santorini volcano, 70 km north of Crete, in the middle of the second millennium BC. Recent scientific work has established that the Santorini eruption was up to 10 times more powerful than the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. It caused massive climatic disruption and the blast was heard over 3000 miles away. Costas Synolakis thinks that the collapse of Santorini's giant volcanic cone into the sea during the eruption was the mechanism that generated a wave large enough to destroy the Minoan coastal towns. It is not clear if the tsunami could have reached inland to the Minoan capital at Knossos, but the fallout from the volcano would have carried other consequences - massive ash falls and crop failure. With their ports, trading fleet and navy destroyed, the Minoans would never have fully recovered. The myth of Atlantis, the city state that was lost beneath the sea, was first mentioned by Plato over 2000 years ago. It has had a hold on the popular imagination for centuries. Perhaps we now have an explanation of its origin - a folk memory of a real ancient civilisation swallowed by the sea.

I am particularly overwhelmed by all of the articles on cell phone and wireless usage and dangers. Overwhelmed, not only because my husband and I are somewhat dependent on it, but because it resonates within me as the truth, and I know my family must make radical changes, the way we were able to change our diet many years ago.
I have a question for you and all of the other lightworkers out there, especially those with connections :) I have read many times about the incredible technologies of Star Visitors and others; does safe wireless technology exist, or is the technology simply within us (i.e., through telepathy)? There are so many cases of the Illuminati et al hiding better technologies for their own financial gain. Is this just one of them?

Thanks for your comment and question. I'm not aware of what other safe ET communication technology might exist, but I'm quite sure we will find out about this in the coming decade. However, I know from an excellent documentary with Dr. Carlo I saw on TV here in Quebec (you may view a trailer of "Cell Phone War" at http://www.emf-health.com/dr-george-carlo.htm) that the Pentagon has invested millions to pay scientists to devise a means to make safe the use of a cell phone. In the documentary, the researcher explains they have first proven that the current cell phone technology is indeed dangerous for human beings, but also that they have devised a tiny electronic component that, once installed in a cell phone, scrambles the cell phone signal in a way that is makes it (apparently!) harmless for humans. So the Pentagon is now using this technology to protect their officers and soldiers against the harmful effects of cell phone technology -- at least it protects the individual user, but the base station signal is not rendered harmless through this method. The documentary also explains that the cell phone industry has refused to use this component because it would implicitly be an admission that their current technology is dangerous and thus expose them to huge liabilities. They prefer to protect their bottom line rather than protect their billions of clients...
Now if enough people would wake up to this lethal and stealthy threat to their health, perhaps enough pressure can be exerted upon politicians and regulatory agencies to actually force the industry to quickly resolve this problem and implement safeguards against excessive electrosmog from all sources. Asbestos and tobacco were proven unsafe for humans and regulated accordingly. Now it is time to do the same with all sources of electromagnetic pollution.

Kucinich's Impeachment Proposal Takes Antiwar Stand to New Lengths

Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich on Tuesday introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney for "high crimes and misdemeanors" related to his participation in the buildup for the war in Iraq - and what the longshot Democratic presidential contender said was belligerent rhetoric toward Iran.
In an 18-page draft resolution, Kucinich outlined three charges against Cheney: that he "manipulated the intelligence process ... by fabricating the threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction" to justify the war in Iraq; that he deceived citizens and Congress "about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda" to justify the war; and that he has "openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the United States' proven capability to carry out such threats."
"In all this, Vice President Richard B. Cheney has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as vice president, and subversive to constitutional government, to the prejudice of the cause of law and justice and the manifest injury of the people of the United States ... [and] by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office," the resolution concluded.
Kucinich introduced the articles at a news conference held at 5 p.m. Tuesday on Capitol Hill, which was delayed for several hours. The event was originally planned for noon, but Kucinich initially postponed it based on news reports Cheney was undergoing emergency medical treatment for a chronic blood clot condition in his leg. When subsequent news reports indicated the tests were more routine, Kucinich rescheduled the event.
Kucinich - who opposed military intervention in Iraq from the start and voiced strong criticism of the Bush administration's policy during a quixotic run for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination - again has made his antiwar stance a main issue of his bid for the White House.
Democratic leaders, who have stated repeatedly they have no intentions of pursuing the impeachment of either President Bush or Cheney, do not support the impeachment effort. Kucinich said Tuesday that he did not have any co-sponsors for the resolution. But he proclaimed that he had the support of "millions of Americans."
Speaking at the news conference, Kucinich said he was pursuing impeachment of Cheney, and not Bush, for practical reasons. "It's significant and responsible to start in this way, because if the same charges would relate to the president as relate to the vice president, you would then have to go through the constitutional agony of impeaching two presidents consecutively," he said.
The grounds of the proposed impeachment are that the Vice President:
1. fabricated a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction,
2. purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, and
3. has threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States, all in detriment to the national interest of the United States.

REP. DENNIS J. KUCINICH, D-OHIO: Thank you very much for being here.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that, among these, are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the government; and, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.
These words from the Declaration of Independence are instructive at this moment. Because not only whenever any form of government, but whenever any government official becomes destructive of the founding purposes, that official or those officials must be held accountable.
Because I believe the vice president's conduct of office has been destructive to the founding purposes of our nation. Today, I have introduced House Resolution 333, Articles of Impeachment Relating to Vice President Richard B. Cheney. I do so in defense of the rights of the American people to have a government that is honest and peaceful.
It became obvious to me that this vice president, who was a driving force for taking the United States into a war against Iraq under false pretenses, is once again rattling the sabers of war against Iran with the same intent to drive America into another war, again based on false pretenses.
Let me cite from the articles of impeachment that were introduced this afternoon, Article I, that Richard Cheney had purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States armed forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security.
That despite all evidence to the contrary, the vice president actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.
That preceding the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, the vice president was fully informed that no legitimate evidence existed of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The vice president pressured the intelligence community to change their findings to enable the deception of the citizens and the Congress of the United States.
That in this the vice president subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,300 United States service members and the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the United States invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs, which has increased our federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States armed services, through an overextension and lack of training and lack of equipment; and the loss of United States credibility in the world affairs and decades of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq.
That with respect to Article II, that Richard Cheney manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida in order to justify the use of United States armed forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security.
And that, despite all evidence to the contrary, the vice president actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida.
That preceding to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, the vice president was fully informed that no credible evidence existed of a working relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida, a fact articulated in several official documents.
With respect to Article III, that in his conduct while vice president of the United States, Richard Cheney openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the United States's proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining the national security interests of the United States.
That despite no evidence that Iran has the intention or the capability of attacking the United States, and despite the turmoil created by the United States's invasion of Iraq, the vice president has openly threatened aggression against Iran.
Furthermore, I point out in the articles that Article VI of the United States Constitution states, and I quote, "This Constitution and the laws of the United States shall be made in pursuance thereof and all treaties made or which shall be made under the authority of the United States shall be the supreme law of the land. Any provision of an international treaty ratified by the United States becomes the law of the United States."
The United States is signatory to the U.N. Charter, a treaty among the nations of the world. Article II, Section 4 of the United Nations Charter states, and I quote, "All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations."
The articles conclude by pointing out that the vice president's deception upon the citizens and the Congress of the United States that enabled the failed United States invasion of Iraq forcibly altered the rules of diplomacy so that the vice president recent belligerent actions toward Iran are destabilizing and counterproductive to the national security of the United States of America.
These articles of impeachment are not brought forth lightly. I've carefully weighed the options available to members of Congress and found this path the path that is the most important to take.
The justifications used to lead our nation to war have unquestionably been disproved. Brave soldiers and innocent civilians have lost their lives in a war the United States should never have initiated. The weight of the lies used to lead us into war has grown heavier with each death. Now is the time for Congress to examine the actions that led us into this war, just as we must work to bring the troops home. This resolution is a very serious matter, and I will urge the Committee on Judiciary to investigate and carefully consider this resolution.
At this time, I'm happy to take any of your questions.
QUESTION: Congressman, at this point do you have any other -- any fellow members support this?
KUCINICH: At this very moment, the resolution is being transmitted to members of Congress. Because this resolution is so weighty in its import, it's going to be important for members of Congress to have sufficient time to study the articles. This is unlike any other type of legislation or resolution. This is not something that you can ask anyone to make a snap judgment on. It took me a while to come to this point. And I would expect that members of Congress, given the opportunity to review these articles, will be able to come to a conclusion consistent with their own concerns and the concerns of their constituents.
QUESTION: But at this point, you stand alone, at this point?
KUCINICH: At this point, I believe that I stand with millions of Americans who have expressed concern through their state legislatures, through petitions to Congress, through contact with their members of Congress, that something has to be done to reclaim our country's goodness, to reclaim a government which the American people want to be honest, want to be just.
And so I do not stand alone. I have multitudes of people backing this.

The WTC mall survived well, witnessed by Warner Bros. Road Runner and friends. The seismic impact was minimal, far too small based on our comparison with the Kingdome controlled demolition. The Twin Towers were destroyed from the top down, not bottom up, unlike WTC7. The upper 80 percent, approximately, of each tower was turned into fine dust and did not crash to the earth. File cabinet with folder dividers survive.Office paper was densely spread throughout lower Manhattan, unburned, often along side burning cars. Vertical round holes were cut into buildings 4, 5 and 6, plus a cylindrical arc into Bankers Trust and into Liberty street in front of Bankers Trust. All planes but top secret missions were ordered down until 10:31 a.m. (when only military flights were allowed to resume), after both towers were destroyed, and only two minutes after WTC 1 had been destroyed. Approximately 1,400 motor vehicles were towed away, toasted in strange ways during the destruction of the Twin Towers. Since invention of the microwave for cooking in 1945 and laser beam in 1955*, commercial and military development of beam technology has proceeded apace, so use of high-energy beams are likely.

A simple calculation, then, shows that about 50-millionths of a gram could generate a blast equal to the explosion (roughly 4,000 pounds of TNT, according to the FBI) at the Alfred P. From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms. And, argues Naomi Wolf, George Bush and his administration seem to be taking them all
Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down: the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel, and took certain activists into custody.
They were not figuring these things out as they went along. If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy -- but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.
As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps HAS ALREADY BEEN INITIATED TODAY in the United States by the Bush administration.
Because Americans like me were born in freedom, we have a hard time even considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree -- domestically -- as many other nations. Because we no longer learn much about our rights or our system of government -- the task of being aware of the constitution has been outsourced from citizens' ownership to being the domain of professionals such as lawyers and professors -- we scarcely recognise the checks and balances that the founders put in place, even as they are being systematically dismantled.
Because we don't learn much about European history, the setting up of a department of "homeland" security -- remember who else was keen on the word "homeland" -- didn't raise the alarm bells it might have. It is my argument that, beneath our very noses, George Bush and his administration are using time-tested tactics to close down an open society.
It is time for us to be willing to think the unthinkable -- as the author and political journalist Joe Conason, has put it, that it can happen here. And that we are further along than we realise. Conason eloquently warned of the danger of American authoritarianism. I am arguing that we need also to look at the lessons of European and other kinds of fascism to understand the potential seriousness of the events we see unfolding in the U.S.
1) INVOKE A TERRIFYING INTERNAL and EXTERNAL "ENEMY"
After we were hit on September 11 2001, we were in a state of national shock. Less than six weeks later, on October 26 2001, the USA Patriot Act was passed by a Congress that had little chance to debate it; many said that they scarcely had time to read it. We were told we were now on a "war footing"; we were in a "global war" against a "global caliphate" intending to "wipe out civilization."
There have been other times of crisis in which the U.S. accepted limits on civil liberties, such as during the civil war, when Lincoln declared martial law, and the second world war, when thousands of Japanese-American citizens were interned.
But this situation, as Bruce Fein of the American Freedom Agenda notes, is unprecedented: all our other wars had an endpoint, so the pendulum was able to swing back toward freedom; this war is defined as open-ended in time and without national boundaries in space -- the globe itself is the battlefield.
"This time," Fein says, "there will be no defined end."
Creating a terrifying threat -- hydra-like, secretive, evil -- is an old trick. It can, like Hitler's invocation of a communist threat to the nation's security, be based on actual events
(One Wisconsin academic has faced calls for his dismissal because he noted, among other things, that the alleged communist arson, the Reichstag fire of February 1933, was swiftly followed in Nazi Germany by passage of the Enabling Act, which replaced constitutional law with an open-ended state of emergency.)
Or the terrifying threat can be based, like the National Socialist evocation of the "global conspiracy of world Jewry," on myth. It is not that global Islamist terrorism is not a severe danger; of course it is. I am arguing rather that the language used to convey the nature of the threat is different in a country such as Spain -- which has also suffered violent terrorist attacks -- than it is in America.
Spanish citizens know that they face a grave security threat; what we as American citizens believe is that we are potentially threatened with the end of civilisation as we know it. Of course, this makes us more willing to ACCEPT RESTRICTIONS ON OUR FREEDOMS.
2) CREATE A GULAG
Once you have got everyone scared, the next step is to create a prison system outside the rule of law (as Bush put it, he wanted the American detention centre at Guantánamo Bay to be situated in legal "outer space") -- where torture takes place.
At first, the people who are sent there are seen by citizens as outsiders: troublemakers, spies, "enemies of the people" or "criminals." Initially, citizens tend to support the secret prison system; it makes them feel safer and they do not identify with the prisoners. But soon enough, civil society leaders -- opposition members, labour activists, clergy and journalists -- are arrested and sent there as well.
This process took place in fascist shifts or anti-democracy crackdowns ranging from Italy and Germany in the 1920s and 1930s to the Latin American coups of the 1970s and beyond. It is standard practice for closing down an open society or crushing a pro-democracy uprising.
With its jails in Iraq and Afghanistan and, of course, Guantanamo in Cuba, where detainees are abused, and kept indefinitely without trial and without access to the due process of the law, America certainly has its gulag now. Bush and his allies in Congress recently announced they would issue no information about the secret CIA "black site" prisons throughout the world, which are used to incarcerate people who have been seized off the street.
Gulags in history tend to metastasise, becoming ever larger and more secretive, ever more deadly and formalised. We know from first-hand accounts, photographs, videos and government documents that people, innocent and guilty, have been tortured in the U.S.-run prisons we are aware of and those we can't investigate adequately.
But Americans still assume this system and detainee abuses involve only scary brown people with whom they don't generally identify. It was brave of the conservative pundit William Safire to quote the anti-Nazi pastor Martin Niemöller, who had been seized as a political prisoner: "First they came for the Jews."
Most Americans don't understand yet that the destruction of the rule of law at Guantánamo set a dangerous precedent for them, too. By the way, the establishment of military tribunals that deny prisoners due process tends to come early on in a fascist shift. Mussolini and Stalin set up such tribunals.
On April 24 1934, the Nazis, too, set up the People's Court, which also bypassed the judicial system: prisoners were held indefinitely, often in isolation, and tortured, without being charged with offences, and were subjected to show trials. Eventually, the Special Courts became a parallel system that put pressure on the regular courts to abandon the rule of law in favour of Nazi ideology when making decisions.
3) DEVELOP A THUG CASTE
When leaders who seek what I call a "fascist shift" want to close down an open society, they send paramilitary groups of scary young men out to terrorise citizens. The Blackshirts roamed the Italian countryside beating up communists; the Brownshirts staged violent rallies throughout Germany.
This paramilitary force is especially important in a democracy: you need citizens to fear thug violence and so you need thugs who are free from prosecution.
The years following 9/11 have proved a bonanza for America's security contractors, with the Bush administration outsourcing areas of work that traditionally fell to the U.S. military. In the process, contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars have been issued for security work by mercenaries at home and abroad.
In Iraq, some of these contract operatives have been accused of involvement in torturing prisoners, harassing journalists and firing on Iraqi civilians. Under Order 17, issued to regulate contractors in Iraq by the one-time U.S. administrator in Baghdad, Paul Bremer, these contractors are immune from prosecution.
Yes, but that is in Iraq, you could argue; however, after Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Homeland Security hired and deployed hundreds of armed private security guards in New Orleans.
The investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill interviewed one unnamed guard who reported having fired on unarmed civilians in the city. It was a natural disaster that underlay that episode -- but the administration's endless war on terror means ongoing scope for what are in effect privately contracted armies to take on crisis and emergency management at home in U.S. cities.
Thugs in America? Groups of angry young Republican men, dressed in identical shirts and trousers, menaced poll workers counting the votes in Florida in 2000. If you are reading history, you can imagine that there can be a need for "public order" on the next election day. Say there are protests, or a threat, on the day of an election; history would not rule out the presence of a private security firm at a polling station "to restore public order."
4) SET UP AN INTERNAL SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM
In Mussolini's Italy, in Nazi Germany, in communist East Germany, in communist China -- in every closed society -- secret police spy on ordinary people and encourage neighbours to spy on neighbours. The Stasi needed to keep only a minority of East Germans under surveillance to convince a majority that they themselves were being watched.
In 2005 and 2006, when James Risen and Eric Lichtblau wrote in the New York Times about a secret state programme to wiretap citizens' phones, read their e-mails and follow international financial transactions, it became clear to ordinary Americans that they, too, could be under state scrutiny.
In closed societies, this surveillance is cast as being about "national security"; the true function is to KEEP CITIZENS DOCILE and INHIBIT their ACTIVISM and DISSENT.
5) HARASS CITIZENS' GROUPS
The fifth thing you do is related to step four -- you infiltrate and harass citizens' groups. It can be trivial: a church in Pasadena, whose minister preached that Jesus was in favour of peace, found itself being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, while churches that got Republicans out to vote, which is equally illegal under U.S. tax law, have been left alone.
Other harassment is more serious: the American Civil Liberties Union reports that thousands of ordinary American anti-war, environmental and other groups have been infiltrated by agents: a secret Pentagon database includes more than four dozen peaceful anti-war meetings, rallies or marches by American citizens in its category of 1,500 "suspicious incidents."
The equally secret Counterintelligence Field Activity (Cifa) agency of the Department of Defense has been gathering information about domestic organisations engaged in peaceful political activities: Cifa is supposed to track "potential terrorist threats" as it watches ordinary U.S. citizen activists.
A little-noticed new law has REDEFINED ACTIVISM such as animal rights protests as "terrorism." So the DEFINITION of "TERRORIST" slowly expands to INCLUDE THE OPPOSITION.
6) ENGAGE IN ARBITRARY DETENTION and RELEASE
This scares people. It is a kind of cat-and-mouse game. Nicholas D Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the investigative reporters who wrote "China Wakes: the Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power," describe pro-democracy activists in China, such as Wei Jingsheng, being arrested and released many times. In a closing or closed society there is a "list" of dissidents and opposition leaders: you are targeted in this way once you are on the list, and it is hard to get off the list.
In 2004, America's Transportation Security Administration confirmed that it had a list of passengers who were targeted for security searches or worse if they tried to fly. People who have found themselves on the list? Two middle-aged women peace activists in San Francisco; liberal Senator Edward Kennedy; a member of Venezuela's government -- after Venezuela's president had criticised Bush; and thousands of ordinary U.S. citizens.
Professor Walter F Murphy is emeritus of Princeton University; he is one of the foremost constitutional scholars in the nation and author of the classic Constitutional Democracy. Murphy is also a decorated former marine, and he is not even especially politically liberal. But on March 1 this year, he was denied a boarding pass at Newark, "because I was on the Terrorist Watch list."
"Have you been in any peace marches? We ban a lot of people from flying because of that," asked the airline employee.
"I explained," said Murphy, "that I had not so marched but had, in September 2006, given a lecture at Princeton, televised and put on the web, highly critical of George Bush for his many violations of the constitution."
"That'll do it," the man said.
Anti-war marcher? Potential terrorist. Support the constitution? Potential terrorists. History shows that the categories of "enemy of the people" tend to expand ever deeper into civil life.
James Yee, a U.S. citizen, was the Muslim chaplain at Guantánamo who was accused of mishandling classified documents. He was harassed by the U.S. military before the charges against him were dropped. Yee has been detained and released several times. He is still of interest.
Brandon Mayfield, a U.S. citizen and lawyer in Oregon, was mistakenly identified as a possible terrorist. His house was secretly broken into and his computer seized. Though he is innocent of the accusation against him, he is still on the list. It is a standard practice of fascist societies that once you are on the list, you can't get off.
7) TARGET KEY INDIVIDUALS
Threaten civil servants, artists and academics with job loss if they don't toe the line. Mussolini went after the rectors of state universities who did not conform to the fascist line; so did Joseph Goebbels, who purged academics who were not pro-Nazi; so did Chile's Augusto Pinochet; so does the Chinese communist Politburo in punishing pro-democracy students and professors.
Academe is a tinderbox of activism, so those seeking a fascist shift punish academics and students with professional loss if they do not "coordinate," in Goebbels' term, ideologically. Since civil servants are the sector of society most vulnerable to being fired by a given regime, they are also a group that fascists typically "coordinate" early on: the Reich Law for the Re-establishment of a Professional Civil Service was passed on April 7 1933.
Bush supporters in state legislatures in several states put pressure on regents at state universities to penalise or fire academics who have been critical of the administration. As for civil servants, the Bush administration has derailed the career of one military lawyer who spoke up for fair trials for detainees, while an administration official publicly intimidated the law firms that represent detainees pro bono by threatening to call for their major corporate clients to boycott them.
Elsewhere, a CIA contract worker who said in a closed blog that "waterboarding is torture" was stripped of the security clearance she needed in order to do her job. Most recently, the administration purged eight U.S. attorneys for what looks like insufficient political loyalty. When Goebbels purged the civil service in April 1933, attorneys were "coordinated" too, a step that eased the way of the increasingly brutal laws to follow.
8) CONTROL THE PRESS
Italy in the 1920s, Germany in the 30s, East Germany in the 50s, Czechoslovakia in the 60s, the Latin American dictatorships in the 70s, China in the 80s and 90s -- all dictatorships and would-be dictators target newspapers and journalists. They threaten and harass them in more open societies that they are seeking to close, and they arrest them and worse in societies that have been closed already.
The Committee to Protect Journalists says arrests of U.S. journalists are at an all-time high: Josh Wolf (no relation), a blogger in San Francisco, has been put in jail for a year for refusing to turn over video of an anti-war demonstration; Homeland Security brought a criminal complaint against reporter Greg Palast, claiming he threatened "critical infrastructure" when he and a TV producer were filming victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Palast had written a bestseller critical of the Bush administration.
Other reporters and writers have been punished in other ways. Joseph C Wilson accused Bush, in a New York Times op-ed, of leading the country to war on the basis of a false charge that Saddam Hussein had acquired yellowcake uranium in Niger. His wife, Valerie Plame, was outed as a CIA spy -- a form of retaliation that ended her career.
Prosecution and job loss are nothing, though, compared with how the U.S. is treating journalists seeking to cover the conflict in Iraq in an unbiased way. The Committee to Protect Journalists has documented multiple accounts of the U.S. military in Iraq firing upon or threatening to fire upon unembedded (meaning independent) reporters and camera operators from organisations ranging from al-Jazeera to the BBC.
While westerners may question the accounts by al-Jazeera, they should pay attention to the accounts of reporters such as the BBC's Kate Adie. In some cases reporters have been wounded or killed, including ITN's Terry Lloyd in 2003. Both CBS and the Associated Press in Iraq had staff members seized by the U.S. military and taken to violent prisons; the news organisations were unable to see the evidence against their staffers.
Over time in closing societies, real news is supplanted by fake news and false documents. Pinochet showed Chilean citizens falsified documents to back up his claim that terrorists had been about to attack the nation. The yellowcake charge, too, was based on forged papers.
You won't have a shutdown of news in modern America -- it is not possible. But you can have, as Frank Rich and Sidney Blumenthal have pointed out, a steady stream of lies polluting the news well. What you already have is a White House directing a stream of false information that is so relentless that it is increasingly hard to sort out truth from untruth.
In a fascist system, it's not the lies that count but the muddying. When citizens CAN'T TELL THE REAL NEWS FROM FAKE, they give up their demands for accountability bit by bit.
9) DISSENT EQUALS TREASON
Cast dissent as "treason" and criticism as "espionage'. Every closing society does this, just as it elaborates laws that increasingly criminalise certain kinds of speech and expand the definition of "spy" and "traitor."
When Bill Keller, the publisher of the New York Times, ran the Lichtblau/Risen stories, Bush called the Times' leaking of classified information "disgraceful," while Republicans in Congress called for Keller to be charged with treason, and rightwing commentators and news outlets kept up the "treason" drumbeat.
Some commentators, as Conason noted, reminded readers smugly that one penalty for violating the Espionage Act is execution. Conason is right to note how serious a threat that attack represented. It is also important to recall that the 1938 Moscow show trial accused the editor of Izvestia, Nikolai Bukharin, of treason; Bukharin was, in fact, executed.
And it is important to remind Americans that when the 1917 Espionage Act was last widely invoked, during the infamous 1919 Palmer Raids, leftist activists were arrested without warrants in sweeping roundups, kept in jail for up to five months, and "beaten, starved, suffocated, tortured and threatened with death," according to the historian Myra MacPherson. After that, dissent was muted in America for a decade.
In Stalin's Soviet Union, dissidents were "enemies of the people." National Socialists called those who supported Weimar democracy "November traitors."
And here is where the circle closes: most Americans do not realise that since September of last year -- when Congress wrongly, foolishly, passed the Military Commissions Act of 2006 -- the president has the power to call ANY U.S. citizen an "enemy combatant."
He has the power to define what "enemy combatant" means. The president can also delegate to anyone he chooses in the executive branch the right to define "enemy combatant" any way he or she wants and then seize Americans accordingly.
Even if you or I are American citizens, even if we turn out to be completely innocent of what he has accused us of doing, he has the power to have us seized as we are changing planes at Newark tomorrow, or have us taken with a knock on the door; ship you or me to a navy brig; and keep you or me in isolation, possibly for months, while awaiting trial.
(Prolonged isolation, as psychiatrists know, triggers psychosis in otherwise mentally healthy prisoners. That is why Stalin's gulag had an isolation cell, like Guantánamo's, in every satellite prison. Camp 6, the newest, most brutal facility at Guantánamo, is all isolation cells.)
We U.S. citizens will get a trial eventually -- for now. But legal rights activists at the Center for Constitutional Rights say that the Bush administration is trying increasingly aggressively to find ways to get around giving even U.S. citizens fair trials. "Enemy combatant" is a status offence -- it is not even something you have to have done.
"We have absolutely moved over into a preventive detention model -- you look like you could do something bad, you might do something bad, so we're going to hold you," says a spokeswoman of the CCR.
Most Americans surely do not get this yet. No wonder: it is hard to believe, even though it is true. In every closing society, at a certain point there are some high-profile arrests -- usually of opposition leaders, clergy and journalists. Then everything goes quiet. After those arrests, there are still newspapers, courts, TV and radio, and the facades of a civil society. There just isn't real dissent. There just isn't freedom. If you look at history, just before those arrests is where we are now.
10) SUSPEND THE RULE OF LAW
The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 gave the president new powers over the national guard. This means that in a national emergency -- which the president now has enhanced powers to declare -- he can send Michigan's militia to enforce a state of emergency that he has declared in Oregon, over the objections of the state's governor and its citizens.
Even as Americans were focused on Britney Spears's meltdown and the question of who fathered Anna Nicole's baby, the New York Times editorialised about this shift: "A disturbing recent phenomenon in Washington is that laws that strike to the heart of American democracy have been passed in the dead of night ... Beyond actual insurrection, the president may now use military troops as a domestic police force in response to a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, terrorist attack or any 'other condition'."
Critics see this as a clear violation of the Posse Comitatus Act -- which was meant to restrain the federal government from using the military for domestic law enforcement. The Democratic senator Patrick Leahy says the bill encourages a president to declare federal martial law.
It also violates the very reason the founders set up our system of government as they did: having seen citizens bullied by a monarch's soldiers, the founders were terrified of exactly this kind of concentration of militias' power over American people in the hands of an oppressive executive or faction.
Of course, the United States is not vulnerable to the violent, total closing-down of the system that followed Mussolini's march on Rome or Hitler's roundup of political prisoners. Our democratic habits are too resilient, and our military and judiciary too independent, for any kind of scenario like that.
Rather, as other critics are noting, our experiment in democracy could be closed down by a process of erosion. It is a mistake to think that early in a fascist shift you see the profile of barbed wire against the sky. In the early days, things look normal on the surface; peasants were celebrating harvest festivals in Calabria in 1922; people were shopping and going to the movies in Berlin in 1931.
Early on, as WH Auden put it, the horror is always elsewhere -- while someone is being tortured, children are skating, ships are sailing: "dogs go on with their doggy life ... How everything turns away, quite leisurely from the disaster."
As Americans turn away quite leisurely, keeping tuned to internet shopping and American Idol, the foundations of democracy are being fatally corroded.
Something has changed profoundly that weakens us unprecedentedly: our democratic traditions, independent judiciary and free press do their work today in a context in which we are "at war" in a "long war" -- a war without end, on a battlefield described as the globe, in a context that gives the president -- without U.S. citizens realizing it yet -- the power over U.S. citizens of freedom or long solitary incarceration, on his say-so alone.
That means a hollowness has been expanding under the foundation of all these still- free-looking institutions -- and this foundation can give way under certain kinds of pressure. To prevent such an outcome, we have to think about the "what ifs."
What if, in a year and a half, there is another attack -- say, God forbid, a dirty bomb? The executive can declare a state of emergency. History shows that any leader, of any party, will be tempted to maintain emergency powers after the crisis has passed.
With the gutting of traditional checks and balances, we are no less endangered by a President Hillary than by a President Giuliani -- because any executive will be tempted to enforce his or her will through edict rather than the arduous, uncertain process of democratic negotiation and compromise.
What if the publisher of a major U.S. newspaper were charged with treason or espionage, as a rightwing effort seemed to threaten Keller with last year? What if he or she got 10 years in jail? What would the newspapers look like the next day? Judging from history, they would not cease publishing; but they would suddenly be very polite.
Right now, only a handful of patriots are trying to hold back the tide of tyranny for the rest of us -- staff at the Center for Constitutional Rights, who faced death threats for representing the detainees yet persisted all the way to the Supreme Court; activists at the American Civil Liberties Union; and prominent conservatives trying to roll back the corrosive new laws, under the banner of a new group called the American Freedom Agenda.
This small, disparate collection of people needs everybody's help, including that of Europeans and others internationally who are willing to put pressure on the administration because they can see what a U.S. unrestrained by real democracy at home can mean for the rest of the world.
We need to look at history and face the "what ifs." Leo Zagami, a former high level Mason and member of the Illuminati, said the head of the Monte Carlo P2 Lodge and the head of the New York Rotary Club, Georgio Hugo Balestrieri, told him in private conversations they had prior knowledge of 9/11.
The conversations, according to Zagami, took place in Europe before 9/11, adding that he had personal information many high level Masons overseas also had prior knowledge of 9/11, including former P2 head and personal friend of former President Reagan, Licio Gelli.
Zagami said these European connections lead directly to the Vatican and especially the Jesuit Gen., Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, who were instrumental in hatching and carrying out the 9/11 tragedy.
Further, he added these connections will lead to high-level U.S. and Vatican officials like President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Cardinal Egan and former New York Mayor Giuliani, all who had prior knowledge and were instrumental in causing 9/11.
Besides Zagami, a high level insider has been feeding information to the Arctic Beacon about Balestrieri's connection to 9/11 and other Illuminati wrongdoings as well as his Vatican and U.S. connections, saying "you are at the tip of an iceberg that is 10 kilometers below the surface."
The source added Balestrieri is a lower level Illuminati minion and thug who has at least two higher levels working above him and directing his activities, which now include his position as head of the New York Rotary Club as well as business holdings in U.S. airport security.

For all the talk about timetables and benchmarks, one might think that the United States will end the military occupation of Iraq within the lifetimes of the readers of this opinion editorial. Think again.
There is to be no withdrawal from Iraq, just as there has been no withdrawal from hundreds of places around the world that are outposts of the American empire. As UC San Diego professor emeritus Chalmers Johnson put it, "One of the reasons we had no exit plan from Iraq is that we didn't intend to leave."
The United States maintains 737 military bases in 130 countries across the globe. They exist for the purpose of defending the economic interests of the United States, what is euphemistically called "national security." In order to secure favorable access to Iraq's vast reserves of light crude, the United States is spending billions on the construction of at least five large permanent military bases throughout that country.
A new Iraq oil law, largely written by the Coalition Provisional Authority, is planned for ratification by June. This law cedes control of Iraq's oil to western powers for 30 years. There is major opposition to the proposed law within Iraq, especially among the country's five trade union federations that represent hundreds of thousands of oil workers. The United States is working hard to surmount this opposition by appealing directly to the al-Maliki government in Iraq.
The attack upon, and subsequent occupation of, Iraq can be seen as a direct result of the 2001 National Energy Policy Development Group (better known as vice president Cheney's energy task force) that was comprised largely of oil and energy company executives. This task force - the proceedings of which have been kept secret by the administration on the grounds of "executive privilege" - recommended that the U.S. government support initiatives in Middle Eastern countries "to open up areas of their energy sector to foreign investment." As Antonio Juhasz, an analyst with Oil Change International wrote last month in the New York Times, "One invasion and a great deal of political engineering by the Bush administration later, this is exactly what the proposed Iraq oil law would achieve."
The people of the United States have indicated, in the national election last November and in countless polls, that they no longer support the Bush administration's war. The Scooter Libby trial revealed that top administration officials, including the vice president, "cherry-picked" and distorted intelligence in order to sell a "pre-emptive" war to a spooked public. The squandering of hundreds of billions of dollars, some billions of which, according to Seymour Hersh writing in the New Yorker, is being siphoned into "black-ops" programs being run out of Cheney's office (a stunning redux of Iran-Contra carried out by many of the same actors), has also strained the patience and credulity of the American people.
Another betrayal is the "contracting out" of "war-related activities" to corporations such as Halliburton, Bechtel, Chemonics and Blackwater. Halliburton, Vice President Cheney's previous employer, calls itself an "energy services company" but has tentacles reaching into nearly every aspect of the war (originally dubbed Operation Iraqi Liberation until some bright bulb among the Bushies realized that "OIL" might not be the best handle for this venture). Halliburton has also profited handsomely from no-bid government contracts awarded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the construction at the national embarrassment known as "Gitmo," and most recently, from the fiasco at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Unfortunately, all this corruption, mayhem and death are good for some (or it wouldn't go on).
The U.S. military budget, larger than the military budgets of the rest of the world's nations combined, continues skyward, even without all the "supplementals" passed regularly by Congress to fight the "war on terror."
The question we must ask as citizens is this: Is the United States a democratic republic or an empire? History demonstrates that it's not possible to be both.

Palestinian Minister of Information: Palestinian Peace Initiatives met with Israeli Military Escalation Reveal Absence of Israeli Partner
Ramallah, 22-04-07: The Palestinian Minister of Information and Official Government Spokesperson, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, today demanded that the international community end its policy of double standards towards Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian people, and warned that Israel is dragging the region into a dangerous cycle of violence through its escalation of military activity in the Palestinian territories.
In a press conference held at his Ramallah office, the Minister of Information pointed out that 23 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis since the formation of the National Unity Government on 18 March, most of whom were civilians including 3 children, while no Israelis have been killed in the same period. He drew attention to the case of a 17-year-old girl, Bushra Barghish, who was killed in her home in Jenin yesterday by a shot to the head during a so-called arrest operation, highlighting that 127 such invasions have been conducted by the Israeli military into cities and villages throughout the West Bank and the northern Gaza Strip over the past month.
Dr. Barghouthi added that most of those killed by the Israeli army have died of injuries to the head and chest, indicating a deliberate policy of 'shoot to kill'.
The Minister emphasized that this aggression is taking place after the Israeli army spokesperson declared a tangible reduction in homemade rocket incidents since early April. This betrays Israel's real response to the four latest initiatives made by the Palestinian and Arab governments: (1) the formation of the National Unity Government with a flexible political platform, (2) the Arab peace initiative for a comprehensive, complete solution to the conflict, (3) the Palestinian proposal for the complete cessation of all forms of violence through a mutual, reciprocal ceasefire agreement, and (4) the Palestinian proposal for a prisoner swap in exchange for the Israeli soldier captured in June 2006.
He stressed the absence of an Israeli peace partner for the Palestinians in that the Israeli governments response to these initiatives has been to step up violence. He added that this was a deliberate strategy on the part of the Israeli government to buy time to irreversibly change facts on the ground through the continued expropriation of land and other natural resources, the construction of the Apartheid Wall, and the expansion of illegal settlements.
Dr. Barghouthi noted that Israel's latest aggression was systematic, and based on three main components: an escalation of military violence; encouraging acts that undermine the rule of law in the Palestinian Territories; and the consolidation of the siege imposed on the Palestinian people and government especially through the continued withholding of some US$ 600 million in tax revenues. The minister added that Israel was coupling this aggression with an international incitement campaign conducted by Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni with the aim of sustaining the siege under which the entire Palestinian population is suffering.
He called urgently on the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people and to uphold their legitimate rights. He stated that it was the duty of the international community to put an end to Israel's impunity while it continuously violates international law.
Dr. Barghouthi urged the Arab states to call for an international peace conference and to prevent Israel from proposing the issue of normalisation with the Arab countries as an alternative to that conference, or to solving the Palestinian issue.
The Minister concluded by wishing the French people a successful democratic process in today's elections and expressed hope that France will continue supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Roux: How are Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz reacting to the approach of this report's publication?
Backmann: At the moment, the Israeli press has only published analyses of the document that will be made public this afternoon. And that document is not yet the report itself, but a sort of plan of a report or "preliminary report." The full and definitive report will not be made public for several weeks. Consequently, we shall not know Olmert's and Peretz's true reaction until that time. What may be said as of now is that their first response strategy has been revealed by their entourage, which has been making a point since this morning of explaining that the whole government was in agreement to conduct this war, and that it supported the way it was conducted. The same people are reminding us that the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) had also given its approval. Which is a way of saying: we are not the only ones responsible.... That strategy could be jeopardized by the final report if, for example, it turned out that the MPs did not have access to reliable information on the mili tary situation in the north on which to base their decision.
Does the population still support the government and, even more, Ehud Olmert?
Even before publication of the preliminary document, one thing was already clear: this government is one of the least popular in Israeli history. A few weeks ago, a poll gave Olmert a two percent approval rating. This unpopularity is not only due to the disastrous way the war in southern Lebanon was conducted, but also to the multiple financial and sexual scandals in which members of the government - including Olmert - are involved. This unpopularity is very likely to increase once the final report is published. What we know already is that the Israeli population has taken it very badly that 4,000 Hezbollah rockets fell on Israel, with the Army unable to find an adequate response. The people reproach the Army and those who direct it, for having been unable to protect them. The victims, the destruction, the days spent in shelters and the population displacements to the south have constituted a trauma. Added to that is the fact that the Army was also unable to liberate the two Israeli soldiers Hezbollah took prisoner July 12.
This anger among the public has already provoked the January 17 resignation of the Israeli Defense Force's chief of staff, General Dan Halutz. It's true that public opinion also reproached Halutz with a kind of "insider trading." While the country was getting ready to go to war, he sold off at least part of his stock portfolio, a decision revealed by the press that was been very poorly received.
Could this report benefit Likud leader Benyamin Netanyahu?
That's one of the possibilities - and one of the risks. If Olmert is forced to resign after publication this summer of the definitive document, new elections could bring his right-wing opposition to power. That is, Likud and its leader Netanyahu, allied with other right-wing parties. To tell the truth, it's hard to see how Olmert could escape this fate. The Israeli media describe the report as a "Political Tsunami" and the daily Yediot Aharonot deems that Olmert is waging "a war for his survival." It remains to be seen whether power will inevitably slip to Olmert's right-wing adversary, or whether the prime minister's Kadima party will be able to reinvent itself. It could present the candidacy of a "new" face - for example, that of Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni. In this regard, we should remember a historical detail: this is not the first time a report has been published after a poorly conducted war. The Shimon Agranat commission also investigated the Army after the Yo m Kippur War. It demanded that the General Staff and military command be fired. It did not propose political resignations. But the pressure of popular discontent pushed then-Prime Minister Golda Meir to resign on April 11, 1974.

Hoping to end the strangulating US-Israeli blockade on Palestinian society, Hamas and Fatah agree to move ahead on a national unity government
Israel and its guardian ally, the United States, rejected the outcome of Palestinian parliamentary elections in January after Hamas scored a resounding victory over the erstwhile ruling party, Fatah, led by Mahmoud Abbas, who is largely viewed as a favourite of the West. Apparently with explicit American backing, Israel has ever since imposed draconian punitive measures against the nominally autonomous enclaves of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, causing unprecedented suffering and hardship to the estimated 3.8 million Palestinians and pushing the most vulnerable segments of society to the brink of starvation.
In addition to withholding hundreds of millions of dollars of Palestinian tax revenue returns, Israel has effectively barred Palestinians from accessing work and food by erecting hundreds of roadblocks manned by trigger-happy Israeli troops. For its part, the Bush administration has come to view Israel's slow-motion genocide against the Palestinians as part of its so-called "war on terror", continued to impose crippling sanctions on Palestinian and other banks operating in the West Bank and Gaza, preventing them from dealing with the Hamas-led government or transferring money donated by Muslim and Arab states into the occupied territories.
Harsh sanctions, which are being imposed with unprecedented vindictiveness and hostility, have led the Palestinian government to being unable to pay the salaries of over 160,000 public employees and civil servants, including 70,000 security cadres. A UN report published this week pointed out that the bulk of Gazans were already nearing the brink of starvation. In the West Bank, poverty rates are catching up, with more Palestinian families unable to meet the basic needs of life due to their loss of income.
As for the future, it is too soon to judge whether the formation of a new Palestinian government will prompt Israel and the United States to end their present siege on the Palestinians. Israel's preoccupation with the Palestinian issue, aside from the daily forays of murder and terror, is at an all- time low as Israeli political society is struggling to face the after effects of its ill-fated war with Hizbullah, including the prospect of the downfall of the Olmert government which may spark fresh general elections.
Some observers have suggested that Israel may seek (as though it is not doing so enough already) to beat down the Palestinians further as a kind of compensation for the wholesome defeat the Israeli army suffered at the hands of resistance fighters in South Lebanon. Indeed, the current Israeli government, dominated by erstwhile Likud hawks eager to outmanoeuvre their jingoistic far right wing opponents like former prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu, seems determined to bring down the Hamas-led government in order to lower Palestinian expectations with regard to any future conflict settlement with Israel.
Netanyahu, whose popularity has skyrocketed since the war with Hizbullah, favours "strategic escalation" in the region until Israel and the West achieve a "total victory" over emerging Islamic forces. In numerous interviews with Western news agencies and TV networks, Netanyahu has claimed that there can be no peace or stability in the Middle East unless the West defeats anti-Israeli forces.
Utterly ignoring Israel's decades-old occupation of Palestine and systematic persecution and dispossession of its people -- which is the central cause of war and instability in the region -- Netanyahu ranted ad nauseam that Israel was standing at the forefront of the confrontation between the West and the Muslim world. In other words, Netanyahu is keener on fighting a "war of civilisations" between Islam and the West than doing anything in good faith to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.
What is truly dangerous is the possibility that his ravings will be accepted by some influential circles in Israel, and especially in the US where the pro-Israeli neo-cons have had a conspicuous stranglehold on the Bush administration. Bush himself, two weeks ago, spoke of "a confrontation with Islamic fascists", ignoring decades of Israeli terror and aggression against the peoples of the Arab world.
That all of this can be discussed in the general media while Israel's occupation army continues to wreak havoc and terror on Palestinian population centres in the West Bank and Gaza Strip beggars belief. On Saturday, 26 August, Israeli soldiers shot and killed 15-year-old Muntaser Suleiman Akka in downtown Nablus. Twenty-two other minors and children were injured, many by live ammunition, during what the Israeli army termed "confrontations" between stone-throwing youngsters and heavily-armed and heavily-armoured Israeli occupation soldiers.
Earlier, the Israeli army destroyed a six-storey building in Nablus on the grounds that two Fatah resistance fighters were hiding inside the building.
Fifteen more Palestinians were killed in four days (from Saturday to Tuesday) including an unarmed civilian guard in Ramallah.
According to an additional UN report issued 24 August, the Israeli occupation army killed 202 Palestinians since the June capture by Hamas fighters of an Israeli soldier. The figure doesn't include the nearly 20 Palestinians killed after 24 August, which brings the tally of the Israeli army to an average of four Palestinians per day.
The human cost is not the only price the Palestinians pay for illogical Western support of Israeli state terrorism. The Israeli army has destroyed the bulk of civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including power stations, schools, colleges, bridges, streets, as well as thousands of residential homes.
Israel's "scorched earth" rampage, which Palestinian officials have likened -- and with evidential justification -- to the German blitz during World War II, was ostensibly "retaliation" for the capturing of a single Israeli soldier by Palestinian resistance fighters. Rejecting any prisoner swap deal (Israel is holding as many as 10,000 Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds of women and children and political internees without charge or trial), Israel rained down indiscriminate destruction upon Gaza, largely while the world was watching its army do the same in Lebanon.

Act 4 - Erosion of Confidence in 'The System' so severe citizens will be panicked into giving up liberties and Constitutional form of government. The plan calls for the dissolution of the US Constitution, triggered by a significant enough 'terrorist' attack. The ultimate intent is to introduce a global government and one-world religion.
Act 5 - The collapse of the US, and other Western economies and morals.
Act 6 - Significant population reduction using natural and man-made disasters.Curtain.

Wow, I couldn't believe it when I heard about our government's sneaky ways of undermining the world's efforts to stop climate change. This week, the press reported Al Gore calling the Harper government plan on CO2 emissions "a complete and total fraud designed to mislead the Canadian people". Recently, Canada also received the international "Fossil Award" for misleading countries and quietly undermining international efforts at the climate negotiations in Kenya.
Canada? Misleading people and undermining the world's efforts to save their children's futures and stop deadly flooding, storms, desertification, diseases? Not my Canada. Surely not.
Well, it's true. And now I'm a strange mixture of hopping mad and really sad. This isn't our country, not one bit, and we need to let our Prime Minister know which country he's leading, and remind him that he works for us. The FDA has slammed the door shut on accepting public comments over its contentious "CAM Guidelines" that threaten to destroy natural medicine by classifying virtually all health-enhancing foods, juices, nutritional supplements and functional foods as "unapproved drugs." NewsTarget has acquired emails from an FDA employee and key author of the CAM Guidelines. This email contains statements that directly contradict the FDA's own website and reveal a tactic designed to silence public commentary by retroactively declaring the comment period to be closed even while the FDA's own documents state the period should continue for another 30 days.Check it out yourself: The FDA website says the comment period ends May 29, 2007 (click here to see the screen capture). But in an email received today by NewsTarget, the FDA's Philip L. FDA Public Comments On Supplements Deadline Extended To May 29
FDA's attempts to slip its CAM Guidelines under the radar fail; deadline for public comment extended to May 29
Following widespread criticism by the public over proposed CAM Guidelines that the agency tried to slip under the radar (see below), the Food and Drug Administration has now extended the deadline for public comment to May 29. (It was previously April 30). The CAM Guidelines (click here to read them yourself) represent a new era of thinking at the FDA and describe the agency's intentions to regulate herbs, functional foods, therapeutic oils, nutritional supplements and even physical devices such as massage rocks as either "drugs" or "medical devices." Click here to read our previous story describing the CAM Guidelines. These guidelines have been widely described as a brazen FDA attempt to destroy naturopathy and alternative medicine.
The FDA was petitioned on April 22 by health freedom attorney Ralph Fucetola, a trustee of the non-profit National Solutions Foundation (www.HealthFreedomUSA.com), to extend its deadline for public comment. The petition also specifically requested that the FDA hold public hearings on the issue, but no decision has apparently been made on that issue.
It now seems that the FDA attempted to sneak the new CAM Guidelines under the radar, hoping the public would never notice the guidelines until they had already been adopted and approved. The original CAM Guidelines document was quietly posted by the FDA on the day after Christmas, 2006, yet did not appear in the Federal Register until several months later. By the time the document was able to be found and commented on by the natural health community, only about thirty days remained in the public comment period. Thanks to public pressure and the National Solutions Foundation petition, the public comment period has now been extended by an additional thirty days to May 29th.
To date, more than 108,000 comments have been received by the FDA on their CAM Guidelines. The issue has received widespread coverage in the natural health community, including articles on NewsTarget.com. The National Solutions Foundation says that an additional 267,000 people attempted to post comments but were unable to do so. NewsTarget previously suggested that comments posted to the FDA might be intentionally ignored or deleted, and according to the NSF, letters that are written to the FDA about this docket are routinely ignored.

Recently the International Panel on Climate Change issued a report predicting an alarming array of impacts of climate change around the globe, including drought, floods, lower crop yields, threatened food security, wildfire and ocean acidification. It seems that no living thing in this web of life we are a part of will be unaffected by climate change.As a primatologist, I am particularly concerned by the prediction that 20 percent to 30 percent of species will face increased risk of extinction.
We know that a majority of the worlds species live in rainforests, from many flagship species like elephants, tigers and chimpanzees to smaller species like insects and algae. Some play a role in curing human diseases, or may in the future.
These forests are threatened both by large-scale commercial exploitation and by rapidly increasing numbers of poor people who are destroying the forests to make charcoal or to open the land for subsistence agriculture. Some of the other effects of climate change predicted by the IPCC, such as drought and food insecurity, will only exacerbate the plight of these people.
A relatively new danger to these forests is the growing enthusiasm for biofuels. In Africa, Asia and Latin America, forest blocks that were previously reserved for conservation or sustainable forestry are being converted to sugar cane and palm oil plantations, whose output will be used as fuel for ethanol or biodiesel plants.
The irony of cutting down forests for biofuels is that forests store a significant fraction of the worlds stocks of carbon. If these carbon-capturing trees are felled and burned whether as firewood or to clear land the oxidation of their carbon will release billions more tons of carbon dioxide.
The tropical rainforests of Africa, Latin America and South Asia are particularly important in this regard.
Tropical deforestation contributes 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere annually, compared to approximately 6 billion tons from burning fossil fuels. Saving these forests would not only prevent the release of carbon currently stored in them, but it also would allow them to continue absorbing carbon in the future.
While population pressures cannot be quickly reversed, nor the businesses of logging and mining phased out, there is much we can do to save these forests. The core of a successful strategy involves working not only with national leaders, but also, and most important, with local people to raise living standards, especially in the areas near the forest preserves. By providing technical assistance to farmers to raise their incomes, education to young people, healthcare to families and economic investments in ecotourism, these rural communities can become the custodians of the forests, not their destroyers.
These strategies have other benefits as well: They promote local stability and security. Rural prosperity, education and effective public-health systems serve as natural defenses against outbreaks of pandemic disease, war, terrorism and political instability. By working with local people to save forests, we help to create stable communities that will surely improve global security.
The governments of the United States and other developed nations bear a special responsibility to promote these programs. Not only are Western nations the greatest consumers of oil, timber and other carbon-generating industries, they have the wealth to bring about change in poor developing countries. Relatively small increases in aid directed toward rural community development, especially through microcredit programs, can have an extraordinary impact on saving wilderness areas, including forests, and the array of life forms they sustain.
Only a few centuries ago, each of the developed nations on the continents of Europe, Asia and North America destroyed their own forests and many of the species inhabiting them in an unsustainable scramble toward wealth. Now only remnant forests remain on those continents.
The developed nations have an opportunity to enable developing nations to avoid making the same mistakes. By investing more in environmentally sustainable development, we can save valuable species, help prevent the escalation of global warming, and increase global security. Helping to preserve the forests of developing nations is in our interests, as well as theirs.

Came back from New York where Dr. M Soffritti from Ramazzini accepted the Irving J. Selikoff Award, only given three times in history for his outstanding contributions to the identification of environmental and industrial carcinogens and his promotion of independent scientific research. He released a new study on aspartame using only low doses of aspartame and, of course, again showing cancer. He released the study on Monday and Friday the FDA put out a note not accepting the first study for no reason, of course, so people would be stumbled and think aspartame is safe.
Sepp in Italy put my information below on press distribution, you see the FDA's lies, and you see my letter to her which was also put on press distribution. In fact, I was on radio all day long and one of the hosts read the letter to the FDA. Thought you would like to put it on your lists. Maybe we can get it off the market now. We're very close to having a case filed in New York. They are only taking aspartame brain tumor cases in New York and New Jersey.

NEW YORK, April 24, 2007
(CBS) A new report indicates aspartame, the artificial sweetener that's the main ingredient in Nutrasweet and Equal, heightens the risk of cancer.
But the Food and Drug Administration has said repeatedly, and as recently as last Friday, that aspartame is safe.
On The Early Show Tuesday, medical contributor Dr. Mallika Marshall explained to co-anchor Julie Chen that, "These were researchers in Italy who have believed for some time that aspartame poses an increased risk of cancer."
Marshall said the researchers gave aspartame to pregnant rats, and to the baby rats beginning five weeks after birth.
"After the dose was adjusted for the smaller body weights of the rats," Marshall continued, "(the researchers) say there was a slightly increased risk of cancer among those rats who were given about 40 percent of what the FDA has deemed a maximum accepted daily dose of aspartame. Among those rats who got twice that dose, they say the risk of cancer was significantly higher."
That's a possible source of concern, Marshall pointed out, because aspartame is "all over the place. It's estimated there are 6,000 products worldwide that contain it from diet sodas to reduced calorie foods, to gum and sugar-free candy. It can even be found in some medications to sweeten the taste to 'help the medicine go down.' so to speak. It's so all around us."
So, how concerned should consumers be?
"There are a couple of things to keep in mind," Marshall responded. "First of all, for the past 25 to 26 years, aspartame has generally been regarded as safe in the United States, based on previous studies that haven't shown a significant link with cancer or any other serious health problems. Also, this study wasn't particularly large, and the data hasn't even been published yet. I think it's going to take some time to tease out this information and try to figure out whether there is a health risk and how that should change how we handle aspartame in our food supply.
"That said, however, parents of children should keep one thing in mind. And that is, if there is a toxic effect of aspartame, and I'm not saying there is, the jury is still out, but if there is, the effects are probably going to be greater, the smaller your body weight, so children would be more susceptible than adults.
"I know we have this growing problem of childhood obesity in this country, and parents are looking for any way to reduce the caloric intake of their kids. But I think we should probably be a little less cavalier about giving our children tons of foods with artificial sweeteners and probably should go back to the basics of milk and water and fruits and vegetables instead of diet soda and reduced calorie foods."
The researchers cautioned that pregnant moms that consumed aspartame appeared to pass on the cancer risk to fetuses, with the vulnerability of fetuses being such that exposure in womb seemed to add to cancer risk later in life. The researchers noted that that parallels the human experience.
Just last Friday, the FDA shot down the conclusion of the same researchers, based on a 2005 study they did, that aspartame raises cancer risks. Previously, the European Food Safety Authority had done the same when it looked at that 2005 study.

Researchers funded by the federal government want to shut down the internet and start over, citing the fact that at the moment there are loopholes in the system whereby users cannot be tracked and traced all the time.
Time magazine has reported that several foundations and universities including Rutgers, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are pursuing individual projects, along with the Defense Department, in order to wipe out the current internet and replace it with a new network which will satisfy big business and government:
One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is bound to make its needs for wiretapping known.
There's no evidence they are meddling yet, but once any research looks promising, "a number of people (will) want to be in the drawing room," said Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor affiliated with Oxford and Harvard universities. "They'll be wearing coats and ties and spilling out of the venue."
The projects echo moves we have previously reported on to clamp down on internet neutrality and even to designate a new form of the internet known as Internet 2.
This would be a faster, more streamlined elite equivalent of the internet available to users who were willing to pay more for a much improved service. providers may only allow streaming audio and video on your websites if you were eligible for Internet 2.
Of course, Internet 2 would be greatly regulated and only "appropriate content" would be accepted by an FCC or government bureau. Everything else would be relegated to the "slow lane" internet, the junkyard as it were. Our techie rulers are all too keen to make us believe that the internet as we know it is ";already dead".
Google is just one of the major companies preparing for internet 2 by setting up hundreds of "server farms" through which eventually all our personal data - emails, documents, photographs, music, movies - will pass and reside.
However, experts state that the "clean slate" projects currently being undertaken go even further beyond projects like Internet2 and National LambdaRail, both of which focus primarily on next-generation needs for speed.
In tandem with broad data retention legislation currently being introduced worldwide, such "clean slate" projects may represent a considerable threat to the freedom of the internet as we know it. EU directives and US proposals for data retention may mean that any normal website or blog would have to fall into line with such new rules and suddenly total web regulation would become a reality.
In recent months, a chorus of propaganda intended to demonize the Internet and further lead it down a path of strict control has spewed forth from numerous establishment organs:
· In a display of bi-partisanship, there have recently been calls for all out mandatory ISP snooping on all US citizens by both Democrats and Republicans alike.
· Republican Senator John McCain recently tabled a proposal to introduce legislation that would fine blogs up to $300,000 for offensive statements, photos and videos posted by visitors on comment boards. It is well known that McCain has a distaste for his blogosphere critics, causing a definite conflict of interest where any proposal to restrict blogs on his part is concerned.
· During an appearance with his wife Barbara on Fox News last November, George Bush senior slammed Internet bloggers for creating an "adversarial and ugly climate."
· The White House's own recently de-classified strategy for "winning the war on terror" targets Internet conspiracy theories as a recruiting ground for terrorists and threatens to "diminish" their influence.
· The Pentagon recently announced its effort to infiltrate the Internet and propagandize for the war on terror.
· In a speech last October, Homeland Security director Michael Chertoff identified the web as a "terror training camp," through which "disaffected people living in the United States" are developing "radical ideologies and potentially violent skills." His solution is "intelligence fusion centers," staffed by Homeland Security personnel which will go into operation next year.
· The U.S. Government wants to force bloggers and online grassroots activists to register and regularly report their activities to Congress. Criminal charges including a possible jail term of up to one year could be the punishment for non-compliance.
· A landmark legal case on behalf of the Recording Industry Association of America and other global trade organizations seeks to criminalize all Internet file sharing of any kind as copyright infringement, effectively shutting down the world wide web - and their argument is supported by the U.S. government.
· A landmark legal ruling in Sydney goes further than ever before in setting the trap door for the destruction of the Internet as we know it and the end of alternative news websites and blogs by creating the precedent that simply linking to other websites is breach of copyright and piracy.
· The European Union, led by former Stalinist and potential future British Prime Minister John Reid, has also vowed to shut down "terrorists" who use the Internet to spread propaganda.
· The EU data retention bill, passed last year after much controversy and with implementation tabled for late 2007, obliges telephone operators and internet service providers to store information on who called who and who emailed who for at least six months. Under this law, investigators in any EU country, and most bizarrely even in the US, can access EU citizens' data on phone calls, sms', emails and instant messaging services.
· The EU also recently proposed legislation that would prevent users from uploading any form of video without a license.
· The US government is also funding research into social networking sites and how to gather and store personal data published on them, according to the New Scientist magazine. "At the same time, US lawmakers are attempting to force the social networking sites themselves to control the amount and kind of information that people, particularly children, can put on the sites."
We are being led to believe that a vast army of maniac pedophiles or terrorists are on the loose and we must do away with all forms of privacy in order to stop them. This is akin to saying that blanket cctv prevents crime. As if to say "if we film everyone all the time, even innocent people, then no one will ever commit any crimes."
Increasingly we are seeing this in every aspect of our lives. Recording, tracking and retaining our data in the name of keeping us all safe. Everyone is now treated as guilty until proven innocent.
Make no mistake, the internet, one of the greatest outposts of free speech ever created is under constant attack by powerful people who cannot operate within a society where information flows freely and unhindered. Both American and European moves mimic stories we hear every week out of State Controlled Communist China, where the internet is strictly regulated and virtually exists as its own entity away from the rest of the web.
The Internet is freedom's best friend and the bane of control freaks. Its eradication is one of the short term goals of those that seek to centralize power and subjugate their populations under a surveillance panopticon prison, whether that be in Communist China, Neoconservative America or the Neofascist EU . They do not, however, control the flow of information, some it potentially disastrous, on the internet. An uncontrolled internet has exposed many lies and plots against the public safety and so, the current administration reasons, it must come under strict governmental control.Therefore, there is now pending a joint attempt by the Department of Justice, FBI, and DEA to bring all access to the Internet within the scope of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). The current CALEA legislation gives law enforcement agencies access to communications traffic under specific legal conditions and constraints. The vehicle for this control, which is slated to be under the Department of Defense, is the so-called Internet2. This is to be a regional internet program and at present, it is controlled by the FBI but in the event this is officially expanded to take over internet control on a national level, it will then be controlled by the DoD.At the present time, a number of very prominent and well-used internet and telecommunication services, such as Google, SBC, AOL and others, report directly to government agencies on the activities of their subscribers and users. For example, Google automatically notes any searches for subjects the government deems inappropriate such as interest in any group or philosophy in the Muslim world, any interest in technical subjects such as bombs or pathogens or any and all persons expressing anger with the government or any of its agencies or personnel.Telecommunication companies fall all over each other to send daily reports on telephone, fax and other communications send or received by such of their patrons whose names have been supplied to the companies. Note from Jean: I watched an interview on The Hour this April 30 with ex-child soldier Ishmael Beah and was moved by his amazing story and how he survived an excruciatingly difficult experience to because a most articulate young man with wisdom beyond his age. To me, this young man epitomized hope... hope that despite the abyss of cruelty man can descend into, it is possible for the soul to rise against all odds and for the human host to become a walking, living angel. If Ishmael can rise up from such a hellish abomination and shine like a living expression of God, our entire world can be redeemed and Love, Beauty and Peace can reign once again everywhere... as I truly believe it will one day soon not far from now...
I checked Amazon and found 137 reviews (!!), as of May 1, on the autobiographic book he personally wrote. Here are two of them as an introduction...
"I began to develop an interest in the civil war in Sierra Leone after watching the movie Blood Diamonds, and came across this title. The book is a gripping biography, made all the more horrific as it tells the story of a young boy, Ishmael who finds himself fleeing the comforts of family and normal life at 12, only to be kidnapped and forced to undergo indoctrination and training to be a boy soldier/killer. This poor kid and many others of his age group were not only brainwashed but completely dehumanized, being fed a steady diet of drugs and hatred, and unleashed as killers. It was only with UNICEF's intervention that Beah is rescued from a monstrous fate and rehabilitated. His story is very relevant in a world filled with hate and violence, and all the more necessary given how little most of us know about the atrocities occurring in third world nations today. Definitely a must-read!"
"There are so many memoirs out there and this one is getting such unbelievable hype (e.g., available for purchase at Starbucks). That was enough to almost made me stay away. I'm glad I did not. This really is a remarkable story of survival. Every page you read you are floored that this man lived to tell this story. More, he is one of the thousands of children this has happened to. If this book doesn't make you thankful for the freedoms you have, nothing will. When you think of the fact that he woke up one day, walked to a dance contest and subsequently lost everything dear to him ... He's a remarkable person and it's a story well worth reading; and hopefully, it will prompt world change for the kids affected by war and forced to become government soldiers when their lives have been destroyed and they have nowhere else to turn.
What is it about African wars that is so disturbing? Why do they unsettle us so? We in the civilized West know all about bestial and mindless cruelty, as the events of 1939-45 graphically prove. And yet as we read about Darfur and Mogadishu today and recall Rwanda and Sierra Leone not long ago, or Biafra and Congo further back, we realize that these vicious, bitter African conflicts have left their trace on contemporary history, and on contemporary consciousness, in ways somehow different from the usual squalid reckoning that modern warfare encourages.
The great benefit of Ishmael Beah's memoir, "A Long Way Gone," is that it may help us arrive at an understanding of this situation. Beah's autobiography is almost unique, as far as I can determine - perhaps the first time that a child soldier has been able to give literary voice to one of the most distressing phenomena of the late 20th century: the rise of the pubescent (or even prepubescent) warrior-killer.
Beah was 12 years old when the civil war in Sierra Leone entered his life, in 1993. Sierra Leone, a former British colony in West Africa, sandwiched between Guinea and Liberia, suffered the usual post-independence rites of passage of corruption, unrest, military coups and gerrymandered elections. In the '90s, civil strife in Liberia prompted the rise of the R.U.F. (the Revolutionary United Front), a ragtag liberation army headed by a former corporal, Foday Sankoh, who took over the diamond mines in eastern Sierra Leone and whose brutal militia (with a horrible penchant for amputating hands) moved on toward the country's capital, Freetown. There is a historical chronology at the back of the book, but you will gain little idea of the internecine political struggle from Beah's account.
In a sense, however, this is beside the point. A 12-year-old is conscious only of immediate circumstances, and in Beah's case the arrival of the rebels in his small town meant sudden separation from his parents and months of indeterminate flight from danger with a handful of other boys. These terrified youngsters wandered aimlessly along jungle tracks, starving and desperate, harassed and suspected as they scrounged for food and tried to make sense of what was going on. Finally they reached the Atlantic Ocean, but, once again, fearful villagers sent them packing, and they were eventually recruited into the Sierra Leone Army as boy soldiers.
Given rudimentary training, an AK-47 and as many drugs as he could consume (amphetamines, marijuana and a toxic mix of cocaine and gunpowder called "brown brown"), Beah seems then to have gone on a two-year mind-bending killing spree, until he was rescued by some Unicef fieldworkers and sent to a rehabilitation center in Freetown. There, with counseling, care and attention, and the psychological ministrations of a kindly nurse named Esther, Beah's slow return to normality began, further augmented when he was sent to the United Nations with the task of explaining the lot of the child soldier to a baffled and concerned international community. He came to live in the United States, graduating from high school and Oberlin College. "A Long Way Gone" is his first, remarkable book.
It is interesting to try to comprehend what act of remembering is going on here. Who of us in our 20s could accurately summon up our day-by-day lives as preteens? As you read "A Long Way Gone," the details allow you to distinguish precise recall from autobiographical blur. Beah can remember the logo on the sneakers he is issued by the army. When he is captured by hostile villagers, he is released because he has a few rap cassettes on him (LL Cool J, Naughty by Nature, among others) and can mime the songs and dance to them. All this has the idiosyncratic ring of precisely remembered truth. But with lines like these, the effect is quite different: "We walked around the village and killed everyone who came out of the houses and huts." Or: "After every gunfight we would enter the rebel camp, killing those we had wounded." The horror is duly registered, but its vagueness and generality don't add up to moments of lived personal history. Indeed, Beah's time in the army, and the accounts of the patrols and firefights he was caught up in, represent only a small portion of this book. And who can blame him? The blood-lust of a drug-crazed adolescent on the rampage with an assault rifle would challenge the descriptive powers of James Joyce. Beah confesses to slitting the throat of a trussed prisoner, and writes lines like: "I angrily pointed my gun into the swamp and killed more people. I shot everything that moved." If these and similar passages are to be given credence, his personal body count must total many dozens. Such knowledge is shocking, but it's the reader's imagination that delivers the cold sanguinary shudder, not the author's boilerplate prose. It is a vision of hell that Beah gives us, one worthy of Hieronymus Bosch, but as though depicted in primary colors by a naïve artist.
However, perhaps this gives us a clue to the nature and effect of these terrifying African conflicts. I have been close to only one, in Nigeria from 1968 to 1970, during that country's civil war, known as the Biafran war. I was in my teens too, not much older than Beah, and far from the actual fighting. But at dusk one night with my father, our car was stopped at a roadblock on a back road in the bush by a unit of Nigerian soldiers. They were young, aggressive, drunk on beer, bored and ostensibly looking for currency smugglers. They waved their Kalashnikovs at us and angrily ordered us out of the car. We were roughly searched, the trunk was opened, and then my father cracked a joke and everybody laughed. But for a few moments I was profoundly aware that anything might have happened to us: there was no control, no "rules of engagement," no chain of command. We were powerless; they had all the power. Night was falling, and there were no witnesses. It was a moment of pure potential anarchy that could have gone any way.
Beah's book confirms this feeling. The unbelievable violence and dread, the blood and death, seem - if this does not appear too awful an oxymoron - somehow guileless and innocent, random, unpremeditated. Is that what fundamentally disturbs us about these African conflicts? Beah tells a story of a messenger sent by the rebels. All his fingers had been amputated except his thumbs. In more peaceful times, Sierra Leoneans used to give one another a thumbs-up sign that meant "one love" (a gestural echo of the reggae song), and that is what the R.U.F. called this mutilation. A joke is made: the cost is unimaginable.
Beah's memoir joins an elite class of writing: Africans witnessing African wars. I think of "Sozaboy," Ken Saro-Wiwa's masterly novel about a young soldier during the Biafran war, or "Machete Season," Jean Hatzfeld's book of blood-chilling interviews with Rwandan killers. "A Long Way Gone" makes you wonder how anyone comes through such unrelenting ghastliness and horror with his humanity and sanity intact. Unusually, the smiling, open face of the author on the book jacket provides welcome and timely reassurance. Ishmael Beah seems to prove it can happen.
